The latest fifth-generation fighters of the United States Air Force, the multirole F-35A Lightning II and F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, on Monday, made their historic debut in Aero India 2023 at the Yelahanka Air Force Station.

The debut of the fighter jets turned heads at the biennial airshow where representatives of more than 100 countries are present and around five lakh visitors are expected.

India's news agency ANI tweeted the video of fighter jets taking off from the airbase. US officials stated that the two fighter jets reached India from the Hill Air Force Base in Utah and Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska.&nbsp;

“In addition to the F-35, an F-16 Fighting Falcon duo will conduct daily aerial demonstrations from February 13-17, showcasing the capability of one of the USAF’s leading fighter jets. On static display, the F/A-18E and F/A-18F Super Hornet are multirole fighters,” said US consulate general Chennai, in a statement.

Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force Major General Julian C Cheater was quoted as saying, “The F-35 represents the leading edge of US fighter technology. Aero India is an ideal forum to showcase the most advanced, capable, lethal, and interoperable weapons systems the US has to offer. This system and others are designed to penetrate and defeat advanced adversary air defences.”

However, India has been planning to build its own fifth-generation fighter, the advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA) and as per the estimates, the development, prototypes and design will cost around ₹15,000 crores.

The modernisation map of the Indian Air Force envisages the deployment of more than 120 stealth fighters (six squadrons) starting in 2032.

The 14th and the largest-ever edition of India's flagship aerospace expo 'Aero India' will be inaugurated on Monday (February 13) by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the Yelahanka Air Force Station, Bengaluru. The five-day event is among the largest and most important aerospace exhibitions in the world. It is primarily aimed at building new technology for Indian aviation industry, showcasing India's growth in aerospace and defence capabilities, fostering partnerships between Indian and foreign firms and facilitating opportunities to transact business and exchange ideas.

According to the organisers, the 2023 iteration of the biennial event is a huge step up from its earlier edition, held in 2021. Comparing the 2023 and 2021 editions, it was mentioned "the event exhibiton area is spanning 35,000 square meters, as against 23,000 square meters in 2021; flying display will comrpise 67 aircraft, as opposed to 64; static display will have 36 aircraft, as opposed to 19; and 809 firms taking part, when compared to 600; and 98 nations participating, as against 55 in the earlier edition."

Some of the key platforms and technologies showcased at the 'India Pavilion' of the event would include the indigenously-designed and built Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas Mk1', a host of drone and anti-drone technologies, space technologies that finds application in defence. The Indian government had earlier stated that a handful of friendly nations had expressed interest in procuring the Tejas aircraft for their respective forces, thus the made-in-India fighter would be a major platform that India looks to export. In addition to this, there would also be solutions in the high-tech domains of Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Communications, Robotics, 5G.&nbsp;

During the second day of the five-day event, the Indian Defence Ministry will be hosting 'SPEED' (Shared Prosperity through Enhanced Engagements in Defence) a Defence Ministers' Conclave. The organiSers of 'Aero India' have said that the CEOs roundtable will witness the participation of 73 business leaders and 27 of them would be from foreign nations. In addition to this, Defence ministers from 32 foreign nations will be attending, so will be air chiefs of 29 friendly-foreign nations. At an introductory event meant to offer more insights into 'Aero India', Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the Defence Ministers' Conclave would focus on both joint development of Defence platforms, hardware and also export of those made in India.&nbsp;

French aerospace and defence firm Thales will be exhibiting a host of military and commercial aviation and earth observation hardware at the Aero India 2023 event that is to take place in Bengaluru from February 13 to 17. Radars, Very Short-Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS), anti-drone systems, and mini-unmanned aerial vehicles are the categories of products that will be showcased in the week-long defence and aerospace exhibition, which is said to be the largest in Asia.&nbsp;

The company said that it has a workforce of more than 1800 employees in the Indian cities of Noida and Bengaluru, where their Global Engineering Centres focus on hardware, software and systems engineering capabilities for both civil and defence sectors, serving global needs. 
 
"Working today with 75 suppliers, generating more than 1900 indirect jobs in India, Thales has expanded locally with joint ventures and other partnerships, such as with Bharat Dynamics Limited to manufacture 60 per cent&nbsp;of the Laser Beam Riding Man-portable air defence system (MANPAD LBRM) system, a top product that Thales will display at the show alongside other defence equipment with local content." In layman's terms, MANPAD are portable, shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles that pose a threat to low-flying aircraft and helicopters.

"Thales will showcase its airborne optronics capability: the 2-in-1 targeting &amp; reconnaissance&nbsp;pod TALIOS (Targeting Long-range Identification Optronic System), Under the navigations segment, the TopAxyz inertial navigation system for air, naval and land transport will be featured. In support of the Indian Navy, Thales will showcase Sonoflash, a new generation of sonobuoy that strengthens anti-submarine warfare capabilities", the company said.

For the Indian civil aviation sector, Thales looks to offer its 'AVANT Up', an inflight entertainment solution. On the drones and anti-drone systems front, the firm will be exhibiting the&nbsp;Spyranger drones, counter-unmanned aerial vehicle solutions that detect, classify and neutralise micro- and mini-drones to protect people, secure critical infrastructure, etc.

“As we celebrate 70 years in India, Thales is eager to pursue its long-standing commitment to partner with India in its big ambitions, including the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) vision.
