President Donald Trump has given it back: this time to members of the media. The Fake News “awards” announced by the unstoppable US President have now gone viral. The shoe is on the other foot. But were things between the media and mighty leaders always hunky-dory? Who messed with the press?

From 1933 onwards and right up to the end of World War II, criminal Adolf Hitler succeeded in ending one-party democracy and turning Germany into a one-man dictatorship. And dictators and editors are not exactly a match made in heaven. Hitler’s Nazi propaganda ministry took control of all newspapers, magazines, art exhibits, music, movies and radio stations. No public rally or meeting could be held without permission. Disagreeing with Nazi beliefs was verboten.

There is no greater irony that before he turned a fascist, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was a journalist himself. Yet, Mussolini imposed censorship and ruled with an iron fist.

It has happened even in India. In light of her growing unpopularity due to inflation, unemployment and corruption in her government, former prime minister Indira Gandhi pushed the then president to impose an Emergency. Mrs Gandhi assumed draconian powers. The opposition was arrested, civil liberties suspended, the constitution almost tampered with and – the media gagged. Newspapers left editorial spaces blank in protests, foreign correspondents were thrown out of the country. Many others were detained for organising protests and 7,000 persons were arrested for distributing print matter opposing the emergency. It was lifted in 1977 – upon Mrs Gandhi’s astrologer’s advice. There were fresh elections which Mrs Gandhi lost. The Emergency was one of the darkest periods in the history of independent India.

So which are the world’s most repressive nations as far as the media is concerned?

According to the 2015 list compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the 10 countries where the media continues to be censored by the political leadership are Eritrea, North Korea, China, Ethiopia, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Vietnam, Iran and Myanmar.

Leaders and the lead, rajas and reporters: most rulers cannot resign themselves to the fact that the minute they become public figures and act in the name of those whom they govern, they can and will be attacked. But the media, too, has to learn that without solid research, no story ought to ever make it to the headlines. There’s a term for that tendency: yellow journalism.

Two books about the Nazis took France's biggest literary prizes today, with Eric Vuillard's story of how German industry and finance backed Adolf Hitler winning the top Prix Goncourt.

"L'ordre du jour" (in English "Agenda") had been among the favourites for the Goncourt prize -- the most prestigious in the French-speaking world.

Vuillard, 49, said he was taken aback on hearing he won for his elegant, 160-page book which charts how the financial support of German industrialists was crucial in Hitler's push for power.

"One is always surprised, sometimes fatally," he told reporters at the Paris restaurant where the winner was announced.

Asked whether the book was a warning for our own populist times, the writer said he wanted to set out how the "elites slid into a situation where they compromised themselves".

His novelistic account of Hitler's rise, which sticks doggedly to the facts, turns on a secret meeting in February 1933 between Hitler and the heads of Krupp, Siemens, Opel, IG Farben and other major industrial groups where they agreed to bankroll his election campaign.

As they left the room, Hermann Goering laughed, "These elections will be the last for 10 years and maybe for a century."

The Renaudot award, often seen as a consolation prize for those not shortlisted for the Goncourt, went to "The Disappearance of Josef Mengele", another book about the Nazis which walked the tightrope of historical fact.

Journalist Olivier Guez spent years retracing the secret post-Holocaust life of the SS doctor, notorious as the "Angel of Death" at the Auschwitz concentration camp for his often lethal experiments on prisoners.

Mengele managed to escape to Argentina and even got a West German passport in his own name in the 1950s so he could return for a holiday in his hometown.
"I wanted to understand what is left of a person after they have done that kind of evil," Guez told AFP after he won.

"I wanted to know what Mengele's life was like afterward, whether he had been punished or not. I think in Europe today (with the rise of the far-right) we need to understand the extraordinary mediocrity of evil," he added.

While Vuillard gets only 10 euros ($11) for winning the Goncourt, the prize almost guarantees a boost in sales of 450,000 copies or more, placing it instantly among the year's top bestsellers.

Although his book was greatly admired, many critics had tipped Veronique Olmi to make history by becoming the second woman writer in a row to win the century-old prize.

Her novel, "Bakhita", based on another real-life story of a Sudanese slave girl who became a Catholic saint, is already a bestseller. It has won the Fnac prize and is also in the running for the Femina prize, which will be decided on Wednesday.

In the third round of voting for the Goncourt, however, she lost out to Vuillard by six votes to four.

Among the other finalists was Alice Zeniter's "The Art of Losing", a powerful account of an Algerian "harki" family who sided with the French during the bloody nine-year Algerian war of independence that ended in 1962.

"We did not choose the winner on the basis of the sex or origin of the writer," said the doyen of French letters Bernard Pivot, who chaired the jury.
"The book is all that counts," he told AFP.

Top literary award in France goes to two books on Nazism

An album containing never-before-seen candid photos of German Nazi party leader Adolf Hitler and party members will be auctioned on Wednesday, according to the auction house.

The photo album found in April 1945 in the bedroom of Hitler's longtime companion Eva Braun could fetch up to more than 15,000 Pounds sterling (roughly $18,340 dollars), said C&T Auctions consultant Tim Harper.

"The pictures are very personal," said Harper, who noted the item is currently owned by an unnamed collector.

The auction will take place at Royal Tunbridge Wells, a town in Kent, England.

Harper explained that Hitler kept tight control over what information could be released publicly in order to protect his image, and that of the Nazi party.

"Hitler's image, particularly his photographs, were controlled. They had to be approved," Harper explained.

Gesturing toward the album, Harper said, "The shots you are seeing in this album are natural, relaxed, a number of them are amusing and almost certainly they would not have been allowed to be published. They are quite revealing."

The photo album includes images of Hitler alongside other leading members of the Nazi party such as Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Goering and Heinrich Himmler.

It also features photos of Hitler travelling in his motorcade past crowds of people cheering and saluting them. One of the images shows Hitler smiling next to a group of cheerful children. Photos of the Swastika symbol are seen in many of the photographs.

"They had to be taken by someone who had clearance to get close to the Fuehrer and close to that inner circle," Harper said.

The album was discovered by British photographer Edward Dean who and English broadcaster Richard Dimbleby, both of whom entered Hitler's bunker in April 1945.

"A Russian soldier, very obligingly took them round and they broke into a room which was Eva Braun's bedroom and the Russian soldier prized open her draw and got the album from there," Harper said.

An iron gate stolen from a former concentration camp at Dachau in 2014 has been found in Norway, Bavaria police officials said today.

The gate, which bore a Nazi slogan “Arbeit Macht Frei”, meaning “Work sets you free”, was discovered after an “anonymous tip-off”, the police said.

The gate was stolen two years ago in November in what authorities believe to be an organised crime.

“Due to an anonymous tipoff, police in Norway’s Bergen have secured an iron gate with the well-known text,” Bavaria state police said on Friday. “From the picture transmitted, police believe it is highly likely that this is the iron gate that was stolen from Dachau.”

The Dachau concentration camp was opened in 1933. Earlier used to incarcenate political prisoners, the camp went on to persecute 41,000 Jews during the World War II. The camp was liberated by the US troops in 1945.

The house in Austria where Adolf Hitler was born is to be torn down to stop it from becoming a neo-Nazi shrine, the government said on Monday, after years of bitter legal wrangling with the current owner.

"The Hitler house will be torn down. The foundations can remain but a new building will be erected. It will be used by either a charity or the local authorities," interior minister Wolfgang Sobotka told Austrian newspaper Die Presse.

"In any case, there shall be no further connection with Adolf Hitler because otherwise the myth of the birth house will be upheld."

He said the decision was based on the recommendations of a 13-member expert committee tasked with deciding what to do with the controversial building in the quaint northern town of Braunau am Inn.

The government hopes this will bring to an end a difficult chapter regarding the large yellow corner house where Hitler was born on April 20, 1889.

Although he only spent the first few weeks of his life at Number 15 Salzburger Vorstadt Street, the address has become a pilgrimage site for Nazi sympathisers from around the world who pose in front of the three-storey building with the Hitler salute.

Stigma 'not deserved'

The property has been empty since 2011 when the government became embroiled in a dispute with owner and local resident Gerlinde Pommer.

Her family has owned the 800-square-metre (8,600-feet) building for more than a century, except for a brief period during the Nazi regime when Hitler's private secretary Martin Bormann bought the building for four times its value in 1938.

After the war, the house was returned to the Pommers in the 1950s.

In 1972, the Austrian government signed a lease with Gerlinde Pommer in 1972 and turned the premises into a centre for people with disabilities.

But the arrangement came to an abrupt end five years ago when Pommer unexpectedly refused to grant permission for much-needed renovation works.

The famously elusive owner also rejected a purchase offer made by the increasingly exasperated interior ministry.

In July, the government approved a legislation amendment to seize the house from Pommer who continues to net 4,800 Euros (around $5,300) in rent every month.

The interior ministry said on Monday that the expropriation bill would be debated in Parliament this week and could enter into force by the end of the year.

"There is now a clear perspective regarding the future of the building under the ownership of the Austrian republic," ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck told AFP.

The issue has sparked heated debate among Braunau's 17,000 residents. Some wanted it to become a refugee centre, others a museum dedicated to Austria's liberation from Nazi rule.

A number of cultural organisations previously opposed the building's demolition because it is part of the historic city centre and therefore under heritage protection.

Every year on Hitler's birthday, anti-fascist protesters organise a rally outside the building at 15 Salzburger Vorstadt Street, next to a memorial stone reading: "For Peace, Freedom and Democracy. Never Again Fascism, Millions of Dead Warn."

But locals resent the attention, dismayed that their pastel-coloured town is known for being the cradle of one of the world's most reviled political figures, rather than for its Gothic architecture or pretty river.

"The people here don't deserve this stigma," district commissioner Georg Wojak told AFP in an interview last year. "Braunau's only crime was that Hitler was born here."

Austria to demolish Hitler's birth house

The United States defence secretary Ashton Carter on Friday criticised the “deeply troubling” remarks by Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, in which he likened himself to Adolf Hitler.

Carter's comments came during a regional security summit with Southeast Asian ally nations, where he was asked on the continuation of the joint military drills with the Philippines in the wake of Duterte's inflammatory remarks.

Carter assured the US-Philippines ties were strong and would remain so. "Like all alliances, it depends on the continuation of a sense of shared interests," he added.

Duterte on Friday had compared himself to Hitler and his crackdown on drug addicts to the Holocaust—Hitler's deadly campaign to exterminate the Jews.

"Hitler massacred three million Jews. Now there are three million drug addicts (in the Philippines). I'd be happy to slaughter them," Duterte told reporters in his home city of Davao.

"But you know, my victims, I would like to be all criminals to finish the problem of my country and save the next generation from perdition."

Earlier this week, Duterte had declared he would put an end to the US-Philippines joint military exercises. He cited the disapproval of two of his alliance partners, Russia and China, as the reason for ending the "war games".

Duterte had later gone on to add that the countries' military alliance would not be severed because of the 65-year-old treaty they share.

Duterte had drawn parallels between his crackdown on drug addicts and the Holocaust?Hitler's deadly campaign to exterminate Jews

"But you know, my victims, I would like to be all criminals to finish the problem of my country and save the next generation from perdition." Earlier this week, Duterte had declared he would put an end to the US-Philippines joint military exercises. He cited the disapproval of two of his alliance partners, Russia and China, as the reason for ending the "war games".
