Another herb cited on TikTok is called Blue Cohosh, which contains a compound called methylcytosine. If used in large doses, it can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, profuse drooling, heart rhythms, muscle weakness, seizures, coma, and even death.

Trebach said, "People may, at the end of the day, perceive these to be potential solutions because they have no other options. As a toxicologist that really scares me." He further added that due to a lack of research on these herbs, even medical experts don’t know whether these herbs work well to cause abortions. "But we do know it can get people really, really sick," he stated.&nbsp;

Once again, please don’t do this." Despite the fact that the video's caption reads, "Life hack # roevwade # womensrights."

Trabach noted that he came across posts relating to herbal abortifacients such as pennyroyal and mugwort last month, shortly after the news about the impending Roe v. Wade decision was leaked. Searches for "pennyroyal," "blue cohosh", and "mugwort" have shot up in the past month. As per recent Google Trends data, searches for "pennyroyal abortion" have increased by 40 per cent, and searches for "blue cohosh pregnancy" grew by 70 percent over the past week.&nbsp;

Though the rise in herbal abortifacients advocacy has emerged because of the rollback of the abortion rights law, they have remained available in the underground market, through herbalists and midwives, leading to those who seek such options for abortion.&nbsp;

There are several blogs and Reddit threads that include step-by-step information on how to self-perform an abortion, and with the speed with which the misinformation is spreading, it can become threatening to lives. "Fifty years ago we didn’t have TikTok. There was some filtration in information. But now anyone can publish anything anywhere and it gets out to billions of people. It just terrifies me," says a medical expert.&nbsp;

In the United States, the herbal supplement market is unregulated. Therefore, people can buy anything that is sold to them as herbal, and it may not be. A study by integrative medicine and women’s health specialist Fredi Kronenberg mentions that three out of 11 products that were marketed as black cohosh had no black cohosh in them. Black cohosh is used to provide relief from menopausal effects.&nbsp;

Due to the strict content guidelines of TikTok, several videos indirectly try to share messages about how these are effective and safe alternatives to causing abortion under the disguise of keywords. Experts believe that those who are trying to provide alternatives to people in need are helping them, but these home remedies cannot replace medical treatment.&nbsp;

TikTok has not yet responded to the spread of misinformation on its platform, and it is not the first time that the platform has received criticism for letting videos containing wrong and harmful information regarding health. Rolling Stone reported that last year, TikTok came under fire for pushing the use of ivermectin medicine as a cure for the COVID disease. Ivermectin is a horse deworming medication.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, experts said that TikTok should take control over the spread of such hazardous information on its platform.&nbsp;

Currently, in the US, websites such as Plan C and Safe2Choose are operational that can connect with people seeking abortions at home and provide solutions like abortion pills, a much safer and more reliable option. Women in the US turn to TikTok's viral herbal abortion remedies as a desperate measure

As the US Supreme Court decided to overturn the constitutional right to abortion giving states the freedom to ban the procedure, former US President Donald Trump&nbsp;declared it was the "biggest win for life in a generation".

Trump, Pence back US Supreme Court's verdict on abortion rights

The number of abortions reported in the United States rose eight percent between 2017 and 2020, reversing a 30-year downward trend as the nation awaits a&nbsp;Supreme&nbsp;Court&nbsp;ruling on whether the nationwide right to the procedure will remain, a study published Wednesday showed.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, a widely-cited US think tank that supports abortion rights and published the report, the trend reversal shows that the "need for abortion care in the United States is growing just as the US&nbsp;Supreme&nbsp;Court&nbsp;appears likely to overturn or gut&nbsp;Roe v. Wade."

By the end of June, the&nbsp;court&nbsp;is expected to rule on whether to maintain the 50-year Roe v. Wade precedent, which established a nationwide right to abortion, or overturn it and allow individual states to set their own rules.

In early May, a draft opinion leaked from the high&nbsp;court&nbsp;showing that the&nbsp;court&nbsp;was leaning towards the latter option.

According to the Guttmacher Institute's report, more than 930,000 abortions occurred in the United States in 2020, compared to 860,000 in 2017.

That correlates to 14.4 abortions per thousand women of childbearing age in 2020, versus 13.5 three years earlier, the institute said.

Every three years, the Guttmacher Institute surveys all health care facilities providing abortions in the United States, creating the nation's most authoritative dataset. But it still excludes self-managed abortions, the institute says.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 630,000 abortions in 2019, but lacks data from several heavily populated states, such as California.

Report shows rebound in number of US abortions

A Democratic drive to make the right to&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;the law of the land failed in the US&nbsp;Senate&nbsp;on Wednesday after&nbsp;Republicans&nbsp;refused to allow a&nbsp;vote&nbsp;on the deeply polarizing issue that threatens to upend the upcoming midterm&nbsp;election&nbsp;campaign.

The House-passed Women's Health Protection Act would have created a federal statute assuring health care providers have the right to provide abortions and patients have the right to receive them.

The effort came amid a political firestorm ignited by a leaked draft opinion that showed the Supreme Court's conservative majority preparing to overturn&nbsp;Roe v. Wade, a landmark 1973 ruling guaranteeing&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;access nationwide.

But it was always a doomed and largely symbolic push, as Democrats already knew they would not be able to secure the 60 votes needed to advance towards a final yes or no&nbsp;vote&nbsp;in the evenly divided 100-member&nbsp;Senate.

In the end, all 50&nbsp;Republicans&nbsp;and one of the 50 Democrats, West Virginia centrist Joe Manchin, rejected considering the legislation. Manchin's&nbsp;vote&nbsp;was no surprise as he had telegraphed his "no" hours earlier.

President Joe Biden vowed never to "stop fighting to protect access to women's reproductive care" and urged voters to elect more pro-choice senators.

"Republicans&nbsp;in Congress -- not one of whom voted for this bill -- have chosen to stand in the way of Americans'&nbsp;rights&nbsp;to make the most personal decisions about their own bodies, families and lives," he said in a statement.&nbsp;

Although the outcome was never in doubt, the rejection is seen as significant, with&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;rights&nbsp;set to be a hot button issue for November's midterm&nbsp;elections, when control of both the House and&nbsp;Senate&nbsp;will be at stake.

A raucous crowd of lawmakers from the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress, which passed the legislation last September, gathered on the&nbsp;Senate&nbsp;side of the building chanting "my body, my decision" ahead of the&nbsp;vote.

They had been encouraged by new Politico/Morning Consult polling showing 53 percent of voters thought Roe should not be overturned, up three percentage points since last week,&nbsp;while 58 percent said it was important to&nbsp;vote&nbsp;for a candidate who supports&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;access.

"Generally, the people who&nbsp;vote&nbsp;and turn out based on&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;policy are those who support more restrictions on&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;rights," said Shana Gadarian, professor of political science at Syracuse University.

"By striking down Roe, this is likely to create a new constituency of pro-choice voters who are activated to turn out and donate in ways that they would not normally in a midterm&nbsp;election."&nbsp;

Day of action

Senate&nbsp;Minority Leader Mitch McConnell suggested over the weekend that a federal&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;ban is "possible" if Roe is overturned, although he has since acknowledged that no position on the issue has ever achieved the 60-vote&nbsp;threshold.

But Democrats seized on the initial remark, arguing that highlighting their disagreement with&nbsp;Republicans&nbsp;could help them in the midterms.
