American Sha'Carri Richardson crushed Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce's hopes of a sixth women's world 100m title when she stormed to victory in Budapest on Monday.

Richardson sprinted to a championship record of 10.65sec despite being in lane nine to seal a US 100m double after Noah Lyles' victory in the men's event on Sunday.

Shericka Jackson and veteran Jamaican teammate Fraser-Pryce took silver and bronze in 10.72sec and 10.77sec respectively on the third day of action in the Hungarian capital.

It was a remarkable run for the 23-year-old Richardson, who was barred from the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana.

She then saw her hopes of challenging for a medal at last year's world championships in Eugene go up in smoke when she failed to qualify in the US trials.

"I'm here. I'm the champion. I told you all. I'm not back, I'm better!" said Richardson, whose penchant for regular hair colour changes and brightly painted nails has earned inevitable comparisons to the late Florence Griffith-Joyner.

Fraser-Pryce, the reigning champion, said she was "really grateful" for a bronze medal after a difficult season that was hampered by a knee injury.

"Last year I ran and won in a championship record and it took another championship record to win tonight," the 36-year-old told the BBC.

"So it just speaks to the level of consistency for female sprinting and being able to make sure that when you show up you have to give 100 percent," she said.

<h2>'Three in a row'</h2>

In a good night on the track for the USA Grant Holloway became the second athlete after compatriot Greg Foster to claim three consecutive world 110m hurdles titles.

Holloway, 25, shot out to a season's best of 12.96sec to win gold ahead of Jamaica's Olympic champion Hansle Parchment, who finished in 13.07sec.

"Three in a row!" said Holloway. "The main thing was really just to come through here and defend my title.

"I felt no pressure at all, I just wanted to run cleanly and stay calm at the finish line."

The two field event medals on offer went to Sweden and, in a historic first, Burkina Faso.

Olympic champion Daniel Stahl left it late to win a second world discus title that had the crowd gripped.

The Swede, who previously triumphed in Doha in 2019, had control of the leaderboard only for defending champion Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia to grab the lead with his sixth and final throw.

All eyes turned to Stahl for the final throw of the competition and the Swede did not disappoint, throwing a championship record of 71.46m.

"This was my best performance ever," said Stahl. I had so much focus, I would say 1,000 percent on the last throw after I saw Kristjan."

Ceh took silver with 70.02m while Lithuania’s 19-year-old Mykolas Alekna claimed bronze with 68.85m.

<h2>First global title</h2>

In the triple jump, Hugues Fabrice Zango gave the west African nation of Burkina Faso its first global athletics title when he won with a mark of 17.64m.

Cubans Lazaro Martinez and Cristian Napoles won silver and bronze.

"The competition was easy for me," said Zango, who won world silver last year and also claimed his country's first ever Olympic medal with a bronze in Tokyo in 2021.

Zango's path to glory was made easier by the first-round withdrawal through injury of much-vaunted 18-year-old Jamaican Jaydon Hibbert.

In other track events, 400m hurdles stars Karsten Warholm and Femke Bol made short work of their qualifying rounds.

World record holder Warholm seemed to barely break sweat despite the sultry conditions as he cruised through to Wednesday's final.

Defending world champion Alison Dos Santos of Brazil and American Rai Benjamin also sailed through.

"There is surely going to be someone who challenges me but today it was very good and I felt strong," said Warholm.

Bol made up for the disappointment of falling with the line at her mercy in the mixed 4x400m relay by striding clear to ease into Tuesday's semi-finals.

"I do not want to talk about what happened last Saturday," said the Dutchwoman, the stand-out favourite in the absence of injured American world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

American Sha'Carri Richardson sprints to women's world 100m title

Cravont Charleston surged past 2019 world champion Christian Coleman to win the men's 100m at the US athletics championships on Friday as Sha'Carri Richardson won the women's 100m to book her long anticipated World Championships berth.

The 25-year-old Charleston, who had never made it to the 100m final at a US championships before, clocked 9.95sec to edge Coleman by one one-hundredth of a second with reigning 200m world champion Noah Lyles third in 10.00sec.

"Just keep running," Charleston said of his mindset as he trailed early in the race. "That's what I tried to do."

The trio will join reigning world champion Fred Kerley in the event at the World Championships in Budapest in August, trying to repeat the US sweep at last year's worlds in Eugene.

The two other members of the 2022 podium won't be there. Marvin Bracy-Williams's hopes of improving on his world silver evaporated when he was injured in the heats and failed to advance while bronze medalist Trayvon Bromell, racing through a painful bone spur on his right heel, finished sixth in the final and said he would soon be seeking surgery.

Richardson, meanwhile, will spearhead the US women's 100m challenge after booking her first world championships berth with an emotional victory in 10.82.

She'd set a personal best of 10.71 in Thursday's heats -- which stood as the top time in the world this year for a day until Shericka Jackson's 10.65 to win at the Jamaican championships on Friday.

Richardson, who had posted a 10.75 in the semi-finals, was the picture of determination on the start line, tossing away her bright red wig to reveal long braids before settling into the starting blocks.

A slow start left her some work to do, but she pulled away late to leave Brittany Brown second on 10.90sec with Tamari Davis third in 10.99.

"I'm ready mentally, physically and emotionally, and I'm here to stay," Richardson told broadcaster NBC after she had climbed into the stands to embrace a number of people.

<h2>'Not back, better'</h2>

The win was a vindication of sorts for Richardson, who was infamously barred from the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana.&nbsp;

She then saw her hopes of competing for a medal at last year's World Championships vanish when she bombed out of the US trials.

"I'm not back," Richardson said. "I'm better."

In other events, Anna Hall grabbed a dominant victory in the heptathlon with a score of 6,677 points -- more than 300 points clear of runner-up Taliyah Brooks's 6,319.

Hall said she was satisfied with the score given that she didn't break training for the meet, and she's still hoping she can achieve her season aim of breaking 7,000 points in Budapest and improve on the world bronze she won last year.

Donald Scott won the men's triple jump with a leap of 17.22m, with Will Claye second at 16.98m.

Harrison Williams won the decathlon with a total of 8,630 points and Vashti Cunningham won the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.91m.

Former world record-holder Keni Harrison smoothly led the way into the 100m hurdles semi-finals with a time of 12.50sec. Nia Ali, the 2019 world champion, was second-quickest in 12.53.

Rai Benjamin, silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics as well as the 2019 and 2022 World Championships, set the pace in the men's 400m hurdles heats with a time of 49.05.

With reigning world champion and world record-holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone focusing on the 400m flat, former 400m hurdles world record-holder Dalilah Muhammad -- an Olympic gold medallist in 2016 and world champion in 2019 -- topped the first-round times in 54.56.

McLaughlin-Levrone led the way into the 400m final with a time of 49.60 in the semis.

A 105-year-old Rambai created a new record in the 100 metres race by securing gold.&nbsp;45.40 seconds is what it took for the 'young lady'&nbsp;to beat all odds and set a new record in 100m at the inaugural and recently-concluded National Open Masters Athletics Championships,&nbsp;conducted by the Athletics Federation of India, in Vadodara.

The inspirational Rambai had taken part&nbsp;in the above-100 category, however, she ended up&nbsp;running the race alone, due to a lack of candidates in the said category. Despite no competition, she still managed to beat the record of the&nbsp;101-year-old Maan Kaur who attained fame after securing the gold medal&nbsp;in 100m in 74 seconds at the World Masters meet. Thus, a new record has been set by Rambai following the recent one-woman race.

"Before this race, my grandmother has won 4 gold medals in a competition. After that, she participated in a competition in Maharashtra in which she won 5 gold medals. She was honoured with two trophies in Badlapur, Maharashtra," Rambai`s granddaughter told ANI. Her granddaughter Sharmila revealed the elderly racer's diet plans and said, "She also drinks pure milk twice a day and consumes a lot of ghee. She doesn`t eat much rice. She started his athletic career in 2021. Before that we did not even know that there is a senior citizens race category." A jubilant Rambai stated,&nbsp;"It`s a great feeling and I want to race again."

For the unversed, Rambai is from a family where several members have bagged medals in different sports.&nbsp;Her 62-year-old daughter Santra Devi had clinched&nbsp;gold in the relay race whereas&nbsp;her sons Mukhtar Singh and&nbsp;Vadhu Bhateri settled for&nbsp;bronze medals in the 200 meters race.

Rambai's achievements once again remind one and all that&nbsp;age has no limitations and the only limitations are the ones that individual sets for himself, or herself.

"Every doctor that I've seen these past couple of years has told me 'No, you will not be back in top form. You will not be able to run what you ran years prior.' And God said 'No'."

He rolls into Eugene, Oregon, this week with a world-leading time of 9.77 seconds in the men's 100 meters - the only event in which he will contend at the Trials - all but assuring him a spot on Team USA.

It's a tantalizing chance to fill the void left behind by Jamaica's Usain Bolt, who retired in 2017 with eight Olympic golds as the world's most famous and beloved sprinter.

But while the world of athletics eagerly awaits the coronation of a worthy heir to Bolt's legacy, Bromell made clear his focus is elsewhere.

"For me, personally, it's all about purpose. I'm not thinking about no medals. I'm not thinking about no times, I’m not thinking about what people see or none of that," said Bromell, who has adopted a strict "no days off" policy on the road to Tokyo.

It's an approach that has certainly paid off, as he clocked his second sub-10-second performance of the year last month at the Track Meet in Irvine, California.

"People don't understand, you can't stop moving. You can't just stop and get complacent. So for me, every day is a grind," he said.

"For me, every day is another day to be prepared for when God presents you with that opportunity."

But it was Farah`s heroic recovery that was the only talking point of a display that was every bit as memorable as his win in London four years ago. 
 
Farah, aiming to become only the second man since legendary Finn Lasse Viren in 1972 and 1976 to complete a 5000m-10,000m double, was left stunned after being sent crashing to the track by training partner Galen Rupp on the 10th lap. 
 
But he brilliantly recovered to get back in the race, hunting down the leaders and powering to gold.Farah later told reporters he had thought of a promise made to his daughter as he tumbled over.
