Bihar: Setback for Nitish Kumar as RJD win Jokihat assembly by huge margin

<p>Benchmark Sensex slipped over 43 points in volatile trade to end at 34,906.11 today with no let-up in selling by investors ahead of May derivatives expiry amid weak global cues.</p>

<p>The cut in India's 2018 GDP growth forecast by Moody's also affected sentiment, brokers said.</p>

<p>The 30-share Sensex opened on a bearish note at 34,876.13 and slipped further to hit a low of 34,735.11 largely on sustained foreign fund outflows amid a global sell-off on political uncertainty in Italy and concerns of a possible China-US trade war.</p>

<p>However, short-covering by speculators ahead of May derivatives expiry tomorrow and recovery in the rupee reversed the early losses, with the gauge scaling a high 35,017.45. It finally ended at 34,906.11, down 43.13 points, or 0.12 per cent.</p>

<p>The Sensex swung over 280 points intra-day.</p>

<p>The barometer had lost 216.24 points in the previous session.</p>

<p>The 50-share NSE Nifty too settled 18.95 points, or 0.18 per cent, lower at 10,614.35. During the session, it moved between 10,648.70 and 10,558.45.</p>

<p>Moody's Investors Service today cut India's 2018 growth forecast to 7.3 per cent from the previous estimate of 7.5 per cent, saying the economy is in cyclical recovery but higher oil prices and tighter financial conditions will weigh on the pace of acceleration.</p>

<p>Brokers said the market sentiment was subdued due to lacklustre performance across the Asian markets and overnight losses at the Wall Street, rattled by renewed concerns of a possible China-US trade war and political uncertainty in Italy.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net of Rs 407.33 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 578.38 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>US&nbsp;Pacific&nbsp;Command, which is responsible for all US&nbsp;military activity in the greater&nbsp;Pacific region, has about 375,000 civilian and military personnel assigned to its area of responsibility, which includes&nbsp;India.</p>

<p>"Relationships with our&nbsp;Pacific&nbsp;and&nbsp;Indian Ocean allies and partners have proven critical to maintaining regional stability," US&nbsp;Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said in prepared remarks.</p>

<p>"In recognition of the increasing connectivity between the&nbsp;Indian and&nbsp;Pacific&nbsp;Oceans, today we rename&nbsp;the US&nbsp;Pacific&nbsp;Command&nbsp;to US&nbsp;Indo-Pacific&nbsp;Command," Mattis said.</p>

<p>He was speaking during a change of&nbsp;command&nbsp;ceremony. Admiral Philip Davidson was assuming leadership of the&nbsp;command&nbsp;from Admiral Harry Harris, who is President Donald Trump's nominee to be ambassador to South Korea.</p>

<p>The renaming does not mean additional assets will be sent to the region at this time but rather recognizes&nbsp;India's increasing military relevance for the United States.</p>

<p>In 2016, the United States and&nbsp;India&nbsp;signed an agreement governing the&nbsp;use of each other's land, air and naval bases for repair and resupply, a step toward building defense ties as they seek to counter the growing maritime assertiveness of China.</p>

<p>Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said they had noted the name&nbsp;change.</p>

<p>"We will continue to pay attention to developments," he told a regular monthly news briefing.</p>

<p>Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Jayant Chaudhary, whose party candidate wrested the Kairana Lok Sabha seat from BJP in the bypolls, on Thursday said that the united opposition had succeeded in halting the "chariot of hate" of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.</p>

<p>The combined opposition would keep its momentum to defeat the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections next year, he said.</p>

<p>"I am confident that RLD will play a role in how to carry forward the opposition unity and alliance and ensure we give an alternative to BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Whatever the alliance, we will play a positive role," he told reporters.</p>

<p>His comments came after the combined opposition candidate Tabassum Hasan defeated BJP`s Mriganka Singh in Kairana and Samajwadi Party candidate won in the Noorpur Assembly election. The SP and Congress backed the RLD while the BSP was said to have extended its tacit support. Mriganka Singh is the daughter of Hukum Singh, whose death necessitated the bypoll.</p>

<p>"Normally, the ruling party is supposed to win by-polls. It`s been just a year that BJP formed a majority government in the state. So in that sense it is a big victory for us. The BJP does not like losing elections. They don`t understand it (loss).</p>

<p>"The BJP is used to high-decibel and high-voltage campaign. They use the media and are visible in all forums. They use all the strength at their command to win elections by any means and the nation saw how Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public meeting in neighbouring Baghpat on Sunday in an influence voters here. The Chief Minister and Deputy Minister, MPs and MLAs were all here to rake up the agenda of riots. But the people did not accept it. Their agenda has been rejected," Chaudhary said.</p>

<p>"We had said earlier that in the contest between `ganna` (sugarcane) and Jinnah, ganna would win. Jinnah and danga (communal riot) have been defeated and ganna has won. We see that the real issues, that of the the farmers, development and the youth have dominated," Chaudhary, the son of former Union Minister Ajit Singh, said while addressing the media.</p>

<p>He said the BJP does a lot of tom-tomming about its achievements. "It is one or two people running the nation now. The Prime Minister likes to take credit -- whether it is the Mars Mission or a six km road construction. So if you take credit for everything, then people are bound to ask where is the Modi wave."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The BJP had swept 73 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2014 general elections and won an overwhelming 312 seats out of a total 423 in the state assembly elections last year.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Singapore on Thursday afternoon for his three-day-visit and was welcomed by the Indian community with full enthusiasm and warmth. This visit is said to be crucial for the Act East Policy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There is a great deal of anticipation and expectations on what&nbsp;Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision is about the Indo-Pacific region," New Delhi's envoy to Singapore, Jawed Ashraf&nbsp;told ANI in an interview.</p>

<p>"We have strong bilateral relationships and a productive, meaningful partnership in the international platform. Singapore is really a springboard, a gateway to South East Asia. It is also a very important defence partner of India. We have the longest running uninterrupted naval exercises and we train together every year, across the three wings of the armed forces," said Ashraf.</p>

<p>The four pillars of the India-Singapore partnership are strategic, economic, innovation and technology, human and cultural links, he added.</p>

<p>India and Singapore are also working in areas like humanitarian assistance in disaster relief, keeping the seas safe, and boosting tourism.</p>

<p>The Prime Minister would be joining a wide range of programmes during this visit. Foreign Minister Raveesh Kumar said that other than meeting the big leadership of Singapore, PM Modi would also deliver keynote address at the 18th Shangri-La Dialogue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit the Indian Heritage Centre in Little India, where he will launch a permanent platform to bring Indian artisans, craftsmen to showcase their crafts to support rural livelihood. Furthermore, he will be launching schemes like Bheem, RuPay, which is a new Domestic Card Payment Scheme, to take Digital India to a new level.</p>

<p>Eight agreements in collaboration with the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) would be signed for higher education, technology and research work during the Prime Minister's visit.</p>

<p>PM Modi is set to visit India-Singapore Enterprise and Innovation exhibitions at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre today which will address topics related to social impact - how can they work towards making changes in health, education, water and agriculture.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After which he will be attending a business and community event with nearly 5,000 people in attendance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Friday, he is scheduled to visit the Arjuna's Chariot and the Istiqal Mosque. He will then go to the Indian Heritage Centre, where he is expected to launch a platform to bring Indian artisans and craftsmen to showcase their work to support rural livelihood.</p>

<p>Finally, he will be visiting the Changi Naval Base, where he will be interacting with the naval officers and sailors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a MoU between Enterprise Singapore (ESG) and The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) Singapore was signed on Wednesday, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in the country on a three-day visit.</p>

<p>Singapore startups can now gain faster entry to India's vibrant startup ecosystem to form partnerships and co-innovate with Indian startups, said ESG in a statement yesterday.</p>

<p>As a start, TiE Singapore will be running a startup mission in July with 10 Singapore startups to meet with Indian startups, corporates, mentors and investors to partner and co-innovate solutions in fintech, e-services and deeptech.</p>

<p>The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed the bail plea filed by Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) chief Syed Salahuddin son Syed Shahid Yusuf in a Hawala terror funding case.</p>

<p>On April 21, National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a charge sheet against Yusuf in terror funding case.</p>

<p>The NIA filed the charge sheet on April 20 against Shahid Yusuf, under section 120-B of the IPC and 13, 17, 18, 20, 21, 38 and 40 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, for willfully raising, receiving, collecting 'terror funds' and holding proceeds of terrorism' for furtherance of terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.</p>

<p>Yusuf, a resident of Soi Bugh village in Budgam district, is a former employee of Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Department. He was suspended after he was arrested by the NIA.</p>

<p>He was the seventh accused against whom a charge sheet had been filed in the case. The other accused include Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, Mohammad Sidiq Ganai, Ghulam Jeelani Liloo, Farooq Ahmad Dagga, Mohammad Maqbool Pandit and Aijaz Ahmad Bhat.</p>

<p>Out of these seven accused people, five, including Yusuf, are in custody and two namely Mohd Maqbool Pandit and Aijaz Ahmad Bhat are absconding.<br />
Of the four accused facing trial in the case, three accused people namely Mohammad Sidiq Ganai, Ghulam Jeelani Liloo, and Farooq Ahmad Dagga have already pleaded guilty.</p>

<p>The case, involving the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl from a nomadic community in Kathua district in January, was transferred by the Supreme Court from Jammu and Kashmir to Pathankot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The apex court had on May 7, also directed day-to-day in-camera trial in the case.</p>

<p>The eight persons arrested in the case will be produced before the district and sessions judge here in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court.</p>

<p>The court had asked the district and sessions judge at Pathankot to personally undertake the trial proceedings and not assign it to other session judges, stating that it would monitor the progress of trial in the case and no other courts should entertain any other plea related to the matter.</p>

<p>The trial in the case will be held according to the provisions of Ranbir Penal Code, which is applicable in Jammu and Kashmir.</p>

<p>Pathankot Bar Association president Reshpaul Thakur said this was for the first time such a high-profile case was to be heard in the court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Punjab authorities have made elaborate security arrangements to ensure a smooth trial in the case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A large number of policemen, including women personnel, have been deployed within and outside the court complex. The main entrance of the complex has been blocked for vehicles, including those belonging to the staffers, who were asked to park their vehicles in an adjacent complex.</p>

<p>CCTV vans were also deployed in the court premises to keep an eye on troublemakers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The policemen were seen in riot gear, some armed with guns and most of them carrying batons and shields.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Special security squads armed with mine detectors and sniffer dogs were doing the rounds to sanitise the complex, where the police have set up barricades outside the main door.</p>

<p>All necessary arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth trial in the case,&nbsp;a senior police officer supervising the security arrangements in and outside the court, told reports.</p>

<p>Officials said a police team along with the staff of Kathua's district and sessions judge will present the files of the case to the court here and request permission to translate the documents from Urdu to English.</p>

<p>The Crime Branch had submitted a charge sheet in the case on&nbsp;April 9&nbsp;before the Kathua court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The case came into the limelight after lawyers of the Kathua bar association reportedly tried to prevent the police from submitting the documents.</p>

<p>The abduction, rape and killing of the child was part of a carefully planned strategy to remove the minority nomadic community from the area, it said.</p>

<p>It named eight persons, including temple custodian and alleged mastermind Sanji Ram, his son Vishal, special police officers Deepak Khajuria alias 'Deepu' and Surender Verma, and a juvenile.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The others arrested in the case are the juvenile's friend Parvesh Kumar alias Mannu as well as head constable Tilak Raj and sub-inspector Anand Dutta.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expanded the horizons of his diplomacy in an interesting manner, in the recent years, he has made a point to visit and greet world leaders immediately after they have been elected as their heads of state.&nbsp;<br />

During his ongoing, tri-nation tour of south-east Asia, PM Modi made a brief stop-over in Kuala Lumpur to meet and greet the newly elected Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Immediately after the meet, the Prime Minister tweeted saying, "Glad to have met Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. I thank him for the warm welcome. We had productive discussions on further cementing India-Malaysia ties".<br />

This is not the first time that PM Modi has seized an opportunity to cement ties with a newly elected leader. &nbsp;When Russia's Vladimir Putin won a fouth term as the president, PM Modi was in Sochi on May 21 for an informal summit.&nbsp;<br />

A similar diplomatic strategy was employed when Angela Merkel, after lengthy negotiations, became the Chancellor of Germany for the fourth term. She was sworn in as the chancellor on the March 14, and to cement the Indo-German ties PM Modi had a brief stop-over in Germany after wrapping up his visit to the united kingdom.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Interestingly, even in the case of China, when President Xi Jinping was unanimously elected for a second term on the March 17, prime minister Narendra Modi was quick to visit China. In an unprecedented informal summit, PM Modi met with the Chinese counterpart in Wuhan to discuss a host of issues, in a bid to resolve differences and reset the Sino-Indo ties.&nbsp;<br />

<p>In her first ever magazine interview, Janhvi Kapoor opened up about why her mom Sridevi never wanted her to enter the film industry.</p>

<p>Janhvi, who turned cover girl for Vogue India`s June issue, was interviewed by filmmaker and mentor Karan Johar as he is the one launching her in Bollywood with ''Dhadak''.</p>

<p>The 21-year-old told Karan that Sridevi thought she wasn`t thick-skinned enough to survive in movies.</p>

<p>"She never wanted me to be an actress. She was more relaxed about Khushi getting into films. She thought I was naïve, that I wasn`t thick-skinned enough. She wanted us to live a more relaxed life. She loved what she did but you know it was intense," said Janhvi.</p>

<p>When the ''Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'' director asked if she feels a void that she does not have her mother to turn to, Janhvi said, "Of course. I could always be the baby with her. When I`d wake up, the first thing I`d do was ask for her. I`d need her to put me to sleep sometimes and she literally had to feed me.</p>

<p>"She added, "The day before she left for the wedding, I had to shoot, but I couldn`t sleep, so I was like, `I need you to come and put me to sleep.` But she was packing, so by the time she came to me I was half asleep. But I could feel her patting my head."</p>

<p>Janhvi further talked about how the untimely death of Sridevi has brought the four children of producer Boney&nbsp;Kapoor, Arjun, Anshula, Janhvi, and Khushi - together.</p>

<p>"It`s made us feel safe and secure. I think, even for Papa, it`s a source of comfort. It`s definitely tied us together. We`ve lost mom and I don`t think that`s a loss any of us will ever get over," she said.</p>

<p>In a profession that is considered strictly male-dominated, Rajasthan's Manju Devi stands tall as North-West Railways first woman porter. Manju took to the profession almost a decade back when her husband died.</p>

<p>Manju decided to take charge of her family and look after her three kids. She managed to get her deceased husband Mahadev's porter license no.15 and took to the demanding task of hauling luggage of passengers at the Jaipur Railway Station.</p>

<p>Devi admits that the start was tough but with the help of other porters and words of encouragement from her family, she managed to pave her way through all adversities.&nbsp</p>

<p>"I weighed 30 kgs and the passengers' luggage was also 30 kgs but it was nowhere to the burden of feeding three children," she recalls.</p>

<p>Clad in a red kurta and a white salwar, Manju Devi sets out every day to work in multiple shifts, to make ends meet for her family.</p>

<p>She has been felicitated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, besides other 112 exceptional Indian women including former beauty queens Aishwarya Rai and Nicole Faria, mountaineer Bachendri Pal and Anshu Jamsenpa, missile woman Tessy Thomas, and private detective Rajani Pandit.</p>

<p>As per a report published in a tabloid, the rumoured couple is staying in a staying in a private island resort and have booked a secluded villa for themselves. The two stayed at the same property when they went there for a vacation in January. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile quashing dating rumours, Tiger at the time of “Baaghi 2” said, "We always go around…all the time. Going around doesn’t mean we’re dating. You do go around with friends, right? I go around with my guy friends also, which no one cares about. Besides, have Disha and I ever indulged in PDA or anything. Today, I can say that she is one of those few people who I can trust implicitly and is very open, straightforward and honest. I don’t have too many friends and I don’t open up easily with people, but she’s an exception. "</p>

<p>Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI in February in connection with the case.</p>

<p>The matter pertains to grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to firm M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd. for investment in Aircel by P Chidambaram during his tenure as the Finance Minister in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Aircel-Maxis case of alleged money laundering is currently under probe by the ED&nbsp;and the CBI.&nbsp;</p>

Aircel-Maxis case: Chidambaram gets temporary relief from arrest

<p>After 12 hours of a massive fire&nbsp;that broke out in a rubber factory in Malviya Nagar,&nbsp;Delhi the Indian Air Force&nbsp;launched a Mi-17 helicopter attached with a Bambi bucket to douse the&nbsp;fire.</p>

<p>The helicopter dispatched from Palam Air Force station is continuing its effort to douse the fire by refilling its Bambi bucket from the nearby Yamuna reservoir.</p>

<p>A massive fire broke out on Tuesday in a godown of a rubber factory in Malviya Nagar.</p>

<p>Immediately after the fire, 40 fire trucks were sent to the spot but failed in extinguishing&nbsp;the fire.</p>

<p>According to reports that the fire has been termed as the highest category blaze.</p>

<p>\Media reports also say that the fire might have caused by rubber material loaded in a truck parked near the godown. The truck caught fire and spread quickly because of the strong winds.</p>

<p>The nearby area and building including a school and a gym have been safely evacuated.</p>

<p>One firefighter is also reportedly injured.</p>

<p>No&nbsp;any other casualty has been reported yet.</p>
