Revealed: Yami Gautam's changes her look for 'Uri'

<p>Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Tuesday that US sanctions on Russia military exports would not impact long-standing ties between New Delhi and one of its key arms suppliers Moscow.</p>

<p>US President Donald Trump in August signed a law threatening sanctions on any country doing business with Russia's defence and intelligence sectors.</p>

<p>The sanctions regime affects American allies like India, which has purchased Russian military hardware and expertise for decades.</p>

<p>India, the world's top defence importer, had been in talks with Russia to buy S-400 long range surface-to-air missile systems when the sanctions were announced.</p>

<p>There had been speculation last year when the sanctions were signed into law that the $6 billion weapons deal could be scuttled.</p>

<p>But Sitharaman said the long-running negotiations "have reached the final stage".</p>

<p>“I like to make it clear here that in all our engagements with the U.S., we have very clearly explained how India and Russia’s defence cooperation has been going on for a very long time,” Sitharaman said in response to a media query pertaining to the&nbsp;US&nbsp;advising India to not go ahead with purchase of S-400 anti-missile system from Russia.</p>

<p>“It’s a time-tested relationship and India has got quite a lot of defence assets from Russia. Assets, spares, servicing, we have a continuous relationship with Russia,” she noted.</p>

<p>Sitharaman said the US&nbsp;sanctions against Russia would not be impacting “this particular characteristic of India-Russia defence cooperation”.</p>

<p>Negotiations with Russia for S-400 were in the final stage, she pointed out, “The S-400 deal has been on for a very long time and we have reached the final stage negotiations. That explains it all,” she said.</p>

<p>India has increasingly turned to the United States and France for arms purchases in recent years, but is still reliant on Russia hardware and expertise to maintain its existing arsenal.</p>

<p>India has very clearly conveyed to the US that the "time-tested" Indo-Russian cooperation in the defence sector will continue, including the deal for S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems for the IAF, notwithstanding the American sanctions against Moscow.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sources said India wants its defence transactions with Russia to be insulated from the purview of stringent American law CAATSA and is likely to raise the issue with the US when the two sides meet in Washington for the 2+2 talks next month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In all our engagements with the US, we have clearly explained how India and Russia's defence cooperation has been going on for a long time and that it is a time-tested relationship. We have mentioned that CAATSA cannot impact the India-Russia defence cooperation," Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said at a press conference.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She said India has got quite a lot of defence assets from Russia and the cooperation between the two countries will continue.&nbsp;<br />

<p>The report said that products procured from ordnance factories for the Army would be brought down from 94 to 50 per cent as the Centre did not provide additional funds to meet the critical shortage of ammunition and spares.</p>

<p>Both the Centre and the Indian Army are yet to confirm this fact.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government had given a massive push to Make in India movement immediately after coming into power in 2014, launching several initiatives around it.</p>

<p>This is not the first time Gandhi has criticised the BJP governments Maki In India scheme. In January, Gandhi used figures of declining investments and called the project “Fake in India programme”.</p>

<p>The central government had last year cleared UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's request to rename the station, despite protests raised in parliament by various parties.</p>

<p>A notification for this was issued by the state government yesterday, an official spokesman said today.</p>

<p>The state government had in June last year decided to rename Mughalsarai Junction in Chandauli district after Upadhyaya, who was found dead near the station in mysterious circumstances in 1968.</p>

<p>The Centre gave its in-principal approval for renaming the station, among the busiest in the country, last year. The move drew flak from opposition parties which accused the ruling party of attempting to tamper with history.</p>

<p>The Aam Aadmi Party was quick to criticise the move after the stations renaming was announced today.</p>

<p>Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, tweeted in Hindi, "If you vote BJP, then names of cities and stations will change. If you vote AAP, then the future of your children will change."</p>

<p>Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan also took a dig at Yogi Adityanath. "Who says that the Yogi government isn't working? <p>Without naming the Congress, Sitharaman said, "false comparisons" were made between the price at which India was procuring the jets and the price being negotiated by some other countries.</p>

<p>"I am assuring you in the company of all the senior officials that yes there is no scandal in Rafale. We are very clear about that," she said replying to a question on allegations of scam in the Rafale deal.</p>

<p>She was addressing a press conference along with top officials of the defence ministry on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the NDA government.&nbsp</p>

<p>"Absolutely," she said when asked whether she can assure that not even a single rupee has been made in the Rafale deal.</p>

<p>She called the allegations very clear case of "motivated attacks".</p>

<p>Sitharaman also said that there has been no allegations of corruption against any officials of the defence ministry in the last four years.</p>

<p>India had signed an inter-governmental agreement with France in September 2016 for procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets at a cost of around Rs 58,000 crore, nearly one-and-half years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the proposal during a visit to Paris.&nbsp</p>

<p>The delivery of the jets is scheduled to begin from September 2019.</p>

<p>The Congress had raised several questions about the deal including the rates and accused the government of compromising national interest and security while causing a loss to the public exchequer.</p>

<p>The Congress has been demanding details of the deal including cost of equipment and weapons, alleging that the deal negotiated under its rule was much cheaper than the contract signed by the Modi government</p>

<p>A man missing from his home in Rajasthan’s Bundi district for five years has been traced to a jail in Pakistan, an official said on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Police said the villager’s 60-year-old father Bhairon Bheel has confirmed his identity.</p>

<p>“His family members have said that Jugraj was mentally disturbed but they do not know how he strayed into Pakistan,” Yadav said.</p>

<p>The Bundi district police received a report from the Rajasthan police headquarter last month seeking information about Jugraj Bheel.</p>

<p>A fortnight ago, an inquiry into the case of 68-year-old Gajanand Sharma had also revealed that he was lodged in Pakistan jail.</p>

<p>He had gone missing 36 years ago from his home in the Jaipur’s Brahampuri area. A police investigation confirmed his nationality and traced his family members.</p>

<p>His wife, Makhani Devi, 70, and her two sons were stunned earlier this month when a policeman approached them for verification of nationality of Gajananad, who was traced to a Pakistan jail.</p>

<p>BJP in-charge for party affairs in Rajasthan, Avinash Rai Khanna, and Jaipur MP Ramcharan Bohra met Sharma’s family on June 2 and assured all possible help for his safe return from Pakistan.</p>

<p>The&nbsp;BJP leaders told the family that the party has written to external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj seeking her intervention to secure Sharma’s release from the Pakistani jail.</p>

<p>Archbishop of Goa and Daman Father Filipe Neri Ferrao has said that the Constitution is in danger and that many people are living in an atmosphere of insecurity.</p>

<p>In a letter addressed to Christians, he said the Constitution should be understood better as general elections are drawing closer. The archbishop also said that human rights are under attack and democracy appears to be in peril.</p>

<p>The letter, issued in the beginning of Pastoral Year that lasts from June 1 to May 31, is addressed to Christians in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman.</p>

<p>"Today, our Constitution is in danger (and that is) the reason why most of the people are living in insecurity," the archbishop said.</p>

<p>"In this context, particularly as the general elections are fast approaching, we must strive to know our constitution better and work harder to protect it," the letter stated.</p>

<p>He said that people were being uprooted from their land and homes in the name of development and quoted Pope Francis who said that "the first victim of development is the poor person".</p>

<p>"It is easier to trample upon the rights of the poor, because those who will raise their voice for them are very few," he added.</p>

<p>The archbishop called for the participation of Catholics and Church communities in politics and social causes.</p>

<p>"Our parishes and small Christian communities ought to be immersed in this mission of the Church. They should be open to the problems of the world. This social concern should not only remain within the confines of the parish community but should reach out to the whole state and country at large," Ferrao said in the letter.</p>

<p>He said that it was advisable that the faithful play an active role in the political field.</p>

<p>They should, however, follow the dictates of their conscience while doing so and shun "sycophantic" politics, he added.</p>

<p>"They should thus strengthen democracy and, on the other hand, help to improve the functioning of the state administration," he said.</p>

<p>The archbishop also expressed concern about malnutrition among children in the country.</p>

<p>"According to global multidimensional poverty index, 30% of the global population of children living in poverty reside in India," he said.</p>

<p>"Why India is struck by extreme poverty? 73% of our country's resources are controlled by 10% of the population. The existing extreme poverty is therefore the result of rampant social injustice prevailing in the country," the archbishop said.</p>

<p>Notably, Delhi archbishop Anil Couto had last month stated in a letter that a "turbulent political atmosphere" posed a threat to India's democratic principles and secular fabric.</p>

<p>In his letter to all parish priests and religious institutions in Delhi archdiocese, Couto had also appealed to the followers of his faith to launch a "prayer campaign" ahead of the 2019 general elections.</p>

<p>The Nipah virus can cause encephalitis — a dangerous swelling of the brain.</p>

<p>Symptoms of the virus vary from none to fever, cough, headache, shortness of breath, and confusion. This may worsen into a coma over a day or two.</p>

<p>The main host of the virus is said to be the fruit bat, with the virus passing from the bat to the fruits it touches.&nbsp</p>

<p>The virus can also be transmitted from animals to humans.&nbsp</p>

<p>Eighteen people have so far contracted the Nipah virus in Kerala. Of them, 16 have died while two are recovering well.&nbsp</p>

<p>Over 2,000 people who it is thought may have contracted the virus are currently being monitored in Kerala.&nbsp</p>

<p>Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan meanwhile said on Monday that the spread of the virus has been contained, but that people should continue to be alert.</p>

Saudi Arabia has banned the import of frozen and processed fruits and vegetables from Kerala after the outbreak of the Nipah virus there, news reports said Tuesday. The UAE had on May 29 banned the import of fresh fruits and vegetables from Kerala. The Nipah virus can cause encephalitis — a dangerous swelling of the brain. Symptoms of the virus vary from none to fever, cough, headache, shortness of breath, and confusion. This may worsen into a coma over a day or two. The main host of the virus is said to be the fruit bat, with the virus passing from the bat to the fruits it touches. The virus can also be transmitted from animals to humans. Eighteen people have so far contracted the Nipah virus in Kerala. Of them, 16 have died while two are recovering well. Over 2,000 people who it is thought may have contracted the virus are currently being monitored in Kerala. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan meanwhile said on Monday that the spread of the virus has been contained, but that people should continue to be alert.

<p>It finally finished at 34,903.21, down 108.68 points or 0.31 per cent.</p>

<p>The gauge had lost 310.49 points in the previous two sessions.</p>

<p>The broader NSE Nifty too dropped by 35.35 points, or 0.33 per cent, to end at 10,593.15, after moving between 10,633.15 and 10,550.90.</p>

<p>Interest rate sensitive realty, banking and auto stocks remained under pressure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trading mood was also impacted after PMI data showed that India's services activity contracted for the first time&nbsp;in three months&nbsp;in May as new business orders stagnated and cost pressure intensified amid higher fuel prices.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 712.41 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought equities to the tune of Rs 2,354.03 crore yesterday, as per provisional data released by the stock exchanges.</p>
