At least 20 people were killed in a massive fire that broke out at a hotel in Delhi's Malviya Nagar. Several others were injured as rescue teams rushed to the scene. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze
Massive fire broke out at a hotel in Malviya Nagar on Wednesday (June 3), killing at least 21 people. Delhi Fire Services rushed multiple fire engines to Flourish Stay B&B in the busy South Delhi area after receiving a call about a blaze at around 9.45am. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. DCP (South) Anant Mittal said in a statement that at least 40 people have been rescued and confirmed that the fire has been successfully extinguished with the assistance of 8 fire tenders. As the rescue operations were underway, reports indicated that the hotel was licensed to operate only six rooms under the Bed and Breakfast (BnB) scheme but was allegedly running as many as 25 rooms. Additionally, according to reports, those rescued and dead also include foreign nationals. Former MLA Somnath Bharti has claimed that the victims are “majorly South African nationals.”
Reactions pour in after deadly Malviya Nagar fire
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured. “The loss of lives due to a fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi is tragic. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected,” he added in a post on X.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta responded on the tragedy and expressed grief, adding that Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, DDMA, CATS Ambulance Services and other emergency response agencies were mobilised to launch rescue and relief operations immediately after the incident. She also said that Delhi government is closely monitoring the situation and all necessary medical assistance and support are being extended to the affected families. Delhi LG Taranjit Sandhu also expressed his condolences.

Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, while condoling the loss of lives urged the state government to provide adequate and timely compensation, including prompt medical care to those injured. In a post on X, Kharge said, "Deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi. My heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured."
Delhi education minister Ashish Sood, speaking to news agency ANI, said, “The building owner who is responsible for negligence will be arrested. We will not spare any illegal building and those found guilty.” He added, “The guilty will not be spared. We are probing whether or not the building obtained NoC. We are finding out if the required permission to run BnB was obtained or not.”
Former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also reacted to the incident and said that these incidents are “extremely concerning.”
