India's Enforcement Directorate raids house of RG Kar College's ex-principal Sandip Ghosh

Officials of India's central agency- the Enforcement Directorate- carried out raids at the residence of the formerprincipal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, among other places in Kolkata in a case about the financial irregularities in the institute, the news agency ANI reported on Friday (Sept 6).

The ED had registered a caseunder the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to probe money laundering charges against Ghosh in the case.

Ghosh was the principal of the institutewhere a trainee postgraduate doctorwas brutally raped and murdered on August 9. He has been accused of indulging in the cover-up of the rape-murder case and hasundergone two rounds of polygraph tests.

Ghosh files plea in Supreme Court

He and three others were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday in connection with the financial irregularities case. On Wednesday, Ghoshfiled a petition in the Supreme Court against a Calcutta High Court decision that ordered the CBIto probe into the graft case against him.

His plea was rejected by the Supreme Court.

Ghosh was under investigation for alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the college and hospital, following a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the CBIto probe the matter.

He was sent to 8-day police custody on Tuesday.

Ghosh has also been suspended by the West Bengal government and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) amid the probe into the corruption case.

Ghosh ‘ordered urgent renovation’ after rape-murder case

In the rape and murder case at the RG Kar College,Ghosh has been accused of indulging in the cover-up of the case and hasundergone two rounds of polygraph tests.

On Thursday, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal alleged that Ghosh ordered an urgent renovation near the crime site.

“The order, signed by Sandip Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College, is dated August 10, just one day after the victim's death. Despite allegations from colleagues and protesters about tampering with the crime scene, the Police Commissioner denied it," West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said in a post on X.
