Hours after reports surfaced that Ranveer Singh would play Lord Shiva in an adaptation of Amish Tripathi’s, The Immortals of Meluha, it has been confirmed that the claims are not true.
Tripathi, author of the three-book Shiva Trilogy, has spoken out and clarified that the Gully Boy actor is not involved with the project. Late Monday night, reports claimed Singh had bought the book’s rights and was partnering with Birla Studios to develop the adaptation.
Ranveer Singh will not play Lord Shiva in The Immortals of Meluha
On Tuesday, Tripathi dismissed the reports and confirmed that Singh has no association with the film, as he confirmed that the rights of the book are with him only.

Speaking to Variety India, Tripathi debunked all the rumours related to his best-selling trilogy as he said, “The rights for the Shiva Trilogy are with me. And nothing has been signed with anyone as yet. Of course, I have huge respect for Ranveer, and am a big fan of his. But this news is not true.”

The Immortals of Meluha is Tripathi's first book in the best-selling Shiva trilogy, followed by The Secret of the Nagas and The Oath of the Vayuputras.
For the unversed, this isn’t the first time there have been reports of the book being adapted for the screen. In 2012, Karan Johar acquired the rights and was set to produce the project under Karan Malhotra, but it was shelved due to concerns over potential backlash surrounding the portrayal of Hindu gods, as per Variety.
In 2022, Amish Tripathi, Shekhar Kapur and Suparn Varma also announced plans to adapt the novel into a web series. There has been no update on that project since.
What did earlier reports said about Ranveer Singh's new project?
After the success of Dhurandhar, anything involving Ranveer Singh is quick to grab headlines. On Monday, a report about Singh’s next project, already being called his most hotly anticipated role, claimed that he would play Lord Shiva. The report stated that the actor has been passionate about bringing Meluha to the big screen for a long time and that the project is now officially under development. It also claimed that the first instalment is expected to go on floors in 2028.
He acquired the rights under his production banner, Maa Kasam Films. He has partnered with Birla Studios to bring the mythological epic to life. Singh has reportedly acquired the rights at a whopping cost, though the exact figure has been kept under wraps.
