Boeing's financial woes are expected to worsen in 2024, as the US planemaker expects to lose cash rather than generate revenue, worsened by flat deliveries in the second quarter. Brian West, the company's CFO, announced at the Wolfe Research Global Transportation and Industrials Conference on Thursday.

Boeing's year-end outlook has deteriorated significantly, with West reducing the full-year free cash flow prediction to negative, in sharp contrast to the previously anticipated positive cash generation in the low single-digit billions. This bleak forecast comes after delivery delays and production issues caused a 7.6 per cent decline in Boeing's stock, which closed at $172.21.

Production concerns and delayed exports to China have worsened the company's woes, undermining an already modest forecast for 2024. "We were expecting this year to be below our financial expectations for the rating, and this is even worse," said Ben Tsocanos, airlines director at S&amp;P Global Ratings.

Boeing's aircraft manufacturing has slowed dramatically, owing to greater scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers following a January incident in which a door stopper blew off an Alaska Airlines plane in midair. West verified a Reuters claim that recent delays in plane deliveries to China were due to a regulatory examination of cockpit voice recorder batteries by China's Civil Aviation Administration.

West also highlighted that commercial aircraft deliveries will not rise in the second quarter compared to the first three months of the year. Customers have become "frustrated and disappointed" because of production delays and delivery concerns, according to West. He also highlighted internal gains while emphasizing the need for faster growth.

Production disruptions and supply delays are projected to result in a second-quarter cash burn comparable to, if not worse than, the $3.9 billion recorded in the first quarter. This forecast contrasts with West's April announcement, in which he projected a considerable, although better, usage of free cash in the second quarter. According to LSEG statistics, analysts had previously estimated a $1.9 billion cash consumption for the time.

Boeing's stock has dropped by roughly 32 per cent year to date. Due to assembly line slowdowns to handle outstanding work, 737 MAX airliner output plummeted to single digits in April, considerably below the US Federal Aviation Administration's cap of 38 jets per month.

The January 5 incident involving an Alaska Airlines airplane prompted US aviation regulators to impose production limits until Boeing resolved its safety issues. Following Dave Calhoun's decision to retire at the end of the year, Boeing is reforming its manufacturing procedures and looking for a new CEO.

Furthermore, the US Justice Department will determine by July 7 whether to prosecute Boeing for violating an agreement that exempted it from prosecution for the 2018 and 2019 plane crashes. The FAA has also set a May 30 deadline for Boeing to submit a 90-day report addressing systemic quality-control deficiencies, with FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker noting Boeing's "long road" to resolving safety concerns.

Boeing is also in talks with Spirit AeroSystems, a supplier of 737 MAX fuselages. While West hinted that a deal may be completed in the second quarter, he emphasized the project's complexity and scale, cautioning against hurrying the process. Spirit AeroSystems, which Boeing spun off in 2005, now supplies rival Airbus, complicating purchase talks.

Boeing faces cash burn and delayed deliveries in 2024 amid production challenges

Republican chairman of the US Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul has warned of national security consequences after Microsoft’s President Brad Smith announced that the company’s high-profile setup with the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-backed AI firm G42 may include the transfer of sophisticated processors and tools.

Smith told Reuters that the pact might enter a second phase, which would involve the export of critical AI technology components such as model weights. However, no firm deadlines have been established. Officials in the United States have expressed worry that AI systems may pose national security dangers by enabling the development of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons. The Biden administration demanded in October that significant AI system developers exchange information with the US government.

The deal's progress is contingent on approval by the US Department of Commerce. Microsoft executives stated that the arrangement included controls to prevent Chinese companies from using Microsoft's technology to train AI systems, albeit these steps are still unknown. Some lawmakers in the United States question their sufficiency.

According to Reuters, McCaul, expressed his worries, saying, "Despite the substantial national security consequences, Congress has yet to receive a complete briefing from the executive branch on this arrangement."&nbsp;

He questioned whether sufficient safeguards are in place to protect vital US technology from Chinese espionage, given the CCP's interests in the UAE.

Current US regulations demand notices and export licenses for AI chip exports, but the Microsoft-G42 agreement highlights regulatory loopholes as technology advances quickly. Currently, no regulations limit the export of AI models. A bipartisan group of legislators, including McCaul, introduced legislation to provide US officials express authority to control such shipments. Microsoft supports a discussion about a new legal framework for AI technology transfer, stressing compliance with growing US regulations.

"Fundamentally, we aim to ensure that American technology can move around the world safely and securely," said Smith.

The Microsoft-G42 transaction, announced last month, was billed as increasing the United States' technology dominance in the face of strategic rivalry from China. Microsoft is investing $1.5 billion in G42, and Smith will join its board.

Details on the exact technologies to be transferred and the security precautions are few, however several are reported here for the first time. The arrangement aims for Microsoft and G42 to collaborate to promote AI technology in areas where neither could do so effectively alone, with a recent contract in Kenya exemplifying this concept.

While the deal requires both businesses to convince their home governments of security procedures, there is no direct agreement between the United States and the UAE overseeing sensitive technology transfers. According to Microsoft executives, the firms may consider expanding these technologies to other areas, such as Turkey and Egypt.

Smith stated that aspects such as protecting AI "model weights," which are critical for AI model performance, are still being finalised. Current approaches for encrypting these weights in usage are at least a year distant. Microsoft is looking into many security measures, including a "vault within a vault" concept that would physically separate data centre components.

"I suspect by the time we're done; we're going to end up with a regulatory regime or trade export control approach that will be broadly applicable, not just to Microsoft and G42," Smith stated.

According to the agreement, G42 must follow a "know your customer" policy to prevent Chinese enterprises from utilising Microsoft technology to train AI models. US officials have suggested but not yet implemented a comparable rule.

Talal Al Kaissi, who leads G42's AI collaborations, pointed out, "We made a strategic commercial decision to collaborate with US companies on sophisticated technology. We're clear about meeting regulatory obligations."

Microsoft retains the ability to impose financial penalties on G42, which are enforceable in London arbitration courts, avoiding problems with the UAE legal system and allowing asset confiscation if G42 breaks the agreement.

It is unclear how US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo will approach the deal. Smith defined the conditions as "informal," citing Raimondo's clear approval or rejection of suggestions.

A Commerce Department spokeswoman stated that any technological transfers would be subject to current export controls as well as potential future laws.

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research lab run by Sam Altman, revealed on Wednesday that it has reached a significant agreement with media conglomerate News Corp. This arrangement gives OpenAI access to content from numerous notable News Corp outlets, expanding the data available for training its AI models, including the commonly used chatbot, ChatGPT.

The agreement comes after OpenAI, which is sponsored by Microsoft, recently agreed to license content from the Financial Times. Such access to massive amounts of high-quality data is critical for the construction and refining of AI models, which rely on a variety of trustworthy information sources.

News Corp, the parent firm of major news outlets including the Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, and the Times, stands to benefit greatly from this collaboration. Historically, news publishers have struggled to receive a fair portion of the earnings earned by internet firms that distribute their material. This agreement might be a watershed moment, delivering a lucrative revenue stream for the collaborating media firms.

While OpenAI declined to disclose financial details, the Wall Street Journal, a News Corp subsidiary, said that the deal might be worth more than $250 million over five years. The conditions also state that content will not be made available on ChatGPT immediately after publishing, giving News Corp an advantage over its distribution channels.

This collaboration expands on OpenAI's prior content partnerships, which include a recent agreement with the&nbsp;social media platform Reddit. OpenAI intends to strengthen the capabilities of ChatGPT, which has been at the vanguard of the AI revolution since its inception in 2022, by gaining access to current and archival content from a variety of reliable sources.

The announcement of this purchase boosted News Corp's market performance, with shares increasing almost 4 per cent in after-hours trading.

Mondelez, the maker of Oreo, Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate and Toblerone, has been slapped with a fine of €337.5 million ($366 million) by the European Union on Thursday (May 23), its ninth-largest antitrust fine. This development comes at a time when food costs are a major concern for European households.&nbsp;

The fine has been imposed for hindering the trade of chocolate, cookies and coffee between European Union countries so that it can keep the prices high.&nbsp;

Dairy Milk, Oreo maker Mondelez slapped with $366mn antitrust fine

The US House Committee on Foreign Affairs&nbsp;voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to advance a bill aimed at loosening limitations on artificial intelligence (AI) exports, underscoring rising concerns that China could use the technology to strengthen its military capability.

The bill, supported by House Republicans Michael McCaul and John Molenaar, as well as Democrats Raja Krishnamoorthi and Susan Wild, seeks to give the Commerce Department the authority to prohibit Americans from collaborating with foreign entities in the development of AI systems that are deemed a threat to national security.

"Without this legislation, our top AI companies could inadvertently fuel China's technological ascent, empowering their military and malign ambitions," McCaul, who chairs the committee, warned on Wednesday.&nbsp;

"As the Chinese Communist Party looks to expand their technological advancements to enhance their surveillance state and war machine, we must protect our sensitive technology from falling into their hands," he stated.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This legislation is the latest sign of Washington's intention to limit China's AI ambitions. There are concerns that Beijing could use AI to influence elections, manufacture bioweapons, or launch cyberattacks.&nbsp;

Last week, a bipartisan group of senators, led by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, pushed Congress to approve $32 billion in AI research spending to maintain the US edge over China.

President Joe Biden's administration is reportedly developing additional steps to protect US AI technologies from foes such as China and Russia. This comes after concerns were expressed during the first formal bilateral talks on AI usage with China in Geneva last week.

The bill passed the committee with 43 votes in favour and only three votes against. It now requires approval from both the House and the Senate before being signed into law by President Biden.&nbsp;

There is presently no counterpart bill in the Senate, and neither Schumer's office nor the White House has commented on their positions on the legislation. However, in recent years, bipartisan initiatives to challenge China's technology gains have grown in popularity.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. This legislation is the latest sign of Washington's intention to limit China's AI ambitions. There are concerns that Beijing could use AI to influence elections, manufacture bioweapons, or launch cyberattacks. The bill passed the committee with 43 votes in favour and only three votes against. It now requires approval from both the House and the Senate before being signed into law by President Biden. There is presently no counterpart bill in the Senate, and neither Schumer's office nor the White House has commented on their positions on the legislation. However, in recent years, bipartisan initiatives to challenge China's technology gains have grown in popularity. (With inputs from Reuters)

Argentina's economic activity fell by 8.4 per cent in March compared to the previous year, according to the country's official statistics agency, INDEC. This is the sixth consecutive monthly loss and the biggest reduction since 2020.

According to a Reuters poll, the March dip surpassed market estimates of a 6.9 per cent drop. The sharper-than-expected contraction demonstrates the major impact of libertarian President Javier Milei's strict cost-cutting policies since his administration began in December. Milei has implemented a stringent austerity program aimed at reducing skyrocketing poverty and lowering an annual inflation rate approaching 300 per cent.

According to INDEC data, nine industries had year-on-year reductions, with construction falling 29.9 per cent and the manufacturing industry losing 19.6 per cent. These sectors were the most severely damaged, contributing significantly to the overall drop in economic activity.

Economic activity numbers are regarded as an early indicator of future GDP developments. The March reduction comes after year-on-year drops of 3.0 per cent in February and 4.1 per cent in January, indicating a continuing downward trend.

Argentina's economic activity fell by 5.3 per cent overall in the fiscal year ended March. The protracted economic downturn highlights the difficulty that President Milei's administration faces as it attempts to stabilise the nation's economy under tough fiscal reforms.

Argentina’s economic activity plummets 8.4 per cent in March, the steepest drop since 2020

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) declared in its monthly bulletin on Tuesday that India's aggregate demand momentum is improving, owing to a recovery in rural expenditure. The central bank noted an increase in overall non-food spending, citing signs of recovery in rural demand.

"Recent data indicate that aggregate demand is picking up. In the personal consumption area, Nielsen IQ statistics show that a welcome pivot is taking place that will boost this category of spending," the RBI wrote in its 'State of the Economy' piece.

The report found that rural demand for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) had surpassed urban demand for the first time in at least two years. In the previous quarter, the FMCG volume increase of 6.5 per cent was primarily driven by rural growth of 7.6 per cent, compared to urban growth of 5.7 per cent. This increase is due to strong demand for household and personal care items.

Additionally, the RBI reported a small decrease in headline inflation in April, consistent with the expectation of a gradual and uneven approach to the 4 per cent target. Annual retail inflation in April was 4.83 per cent, down marginally from 4.85 per cent in March.

Despite this minor reduction, the RBI warned that food costs, including vegetables, cereals, pulses, meat, and fish, might keep headline inflation near 5 per cent in the immediate term. This is despite gasoline price deflation and core inflation falling to a new historical low.

"While statistical base effects may help pull down the headline inflation in July and August, it is expected that September may see a reversal," the Reserve Bank of India stated. "It is only in the second half of the year that a durable alignment with the target may re-commence and sustain till numbers closer to the target are sighted during 2025-26."

The RBI's bulletin highlights the importance of rural consumption in fuelling India's economic growth, as well as the persistent problems of stabilising inflation.

Argentina's President Javier Milei provided the most detailed outline yet of his administration's plan to dollarize the Argentine economy, reinforcing a key campaign promise. <o:p></o:p>

Speaking at a business event in Buenos Aires, Milei detailed the steps his government will take to transition the country toward a dual-currency system where both the peso and the US dollar are legal tender.<o:p></o:p>

Milei explained that the initial phase involves clearing the central bank’s balance sheet by paying down local liabilities and reforming the financial system. <o:p></o:p>

The peso will be maintained at a flexible exchange rate during this period. <o:p></o:p>

Eventually, the central bank will cease printing pesos, facilitating the US dollar's emergence as the dominant currency. <o:p></o:p>

“The peso will become like a museum piece and when it becomes very rare, what do you think we will do? We will dollarize and that way the peso will disappear,” Milei remarked, emphasising the peso's phased-out role.<o:p></o:p>

Since assuming office on December 10, Milei has aggressively pursued measures to tackle Argentina's severe inflation, which exceeds 100 per cent annually. <o:p></o:p>

His administration has focused on reducing the central bank's liabilities, cutting borrowing rates from 133 per cent to 40 per cent, a major drop intended to curb inflation and stabilise the economy. <o:p></o:p>

This approach aims to shift debt from central bank instruments to more stable treasury notes.<o:p></o:p>

Luis Caputo, Milei’s economic chief, has led efforts to make treasury notes more attractive compared to central bank debt. <o:p></o:p>

This move has already seen a significant migration of debt from one-day notes, known as "pases," to treasury holdings. <o:p></o:p>

This transition is essential for the eventual elimination of the central bank's liabilities, which will precede the lifting of capital controls and the introduction of currency competition.<o:p></o:p>

However, Milei was cautious about setting a specific timeline for lifting capital controls, noting that market conditions would dictate the appropriate moment. <o:p></o:p>

Echoing this sentiment, Caputo, speaking before Milei at the same conference, indicated that removing controls prematurely would be "inappropriate," stressing the need for a stable economic environment before such measures could be safely implemented.<o:p></o:p>

This plan is part of Milei's broader strategy to dismantle Argentina's central bank and stabilise the nation's economy through radical financial reforms. <o:p></o:p>

The steps outlined aim to replace the peso with the US dollar, which Milei and his team believe will bring more stability and reduce inflationary pressures that have long plagued the Argentine economy.<o:p></o:p>

The move toward dollarization represents a significant shift in Argentina’s economic policy, with the potential to reshape the financial landscape and address long-standing economic challenges. <o:p></o:p>

Argentina's Milei outlines detailed path to dollarization. Here are the details

Zachry Holdings, the primary contractor for the construction of the $10 billion Golden Pass LNG project in Texas, jointly owned by QatarEnergy and Exxon Mobil, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday. <o:p></o:p>

The company cited challenges at the project site as the main reason for this move.<o:p></o:p>

The Golden Pass LNG facility, situated at a former gas import terminal now being converted for LNG exports, is one of two major US LNG terminals expected to boost export capacity within the next year. <o:p></o:p>

Zachry Holdings, which held a $5.8 billion stake in the project, announced it was pursuing a "structured exit" from the project. <o:p></o:p>

Exxon Mobil, holding a 30 per cent stake, plans to review the project's timeline and provide updates in due course.<o:p></o:p>

"We, along with the other stakeholders, are considering all available options to implement a smooth transition and minimise any impacts," an Exxon spokesperson said in a statement. <o:p></o:p>

The spokesperson also said that the group would “continue to fully support Golden Pass LNG through completion”.<o:p></o:p>

Exxon had projected the start of LNG production in the first half of 2025. <o:p></o:p>

However, John Zachry, CEO of Zachry Holdings, said that the company was compelled to seek bankruptcy protection after failing to resolve cost and billing issues with Golden Pass LNG. <o:p></o:p>

"Because we have been unable to find a path forward, we have been forced to take action to protect our business," Zachry explained.<o:p></o:p>

The financial strain on Zachry Holdings intensified when Golden Pass LNG began direct payments to vendors in March, which reduced the funds Zachry received from advance progress payments. <o:p></o:p>

This resulted in Zachry incurring weekly expenses between $30 million and $40 million while receiving only about $70 million per month from Golden Pass LNG.<o:p></o:p>

Court filings revealed that on May 8, Golden Pass LNG notified Zachry of default on its engineering, procurement, and construction contract, citing Zachry’s failure to promptly pay subcontractors and vendors. <o:p></o:p>

Additionally, Chiyoda International, another contractor for Golden Pass, issued a notice of default to Zachry on the same day. <o:p></o:p>

These defaults precipitated Zachry’s bankruptcy filing after failing to secure additional funding from Golden Pass LNG.<o:p></o:p>

Despite the turmoil, rival LNG developer Venture Global LNG stated that Zachry's bankruptcy would not materially impact work at its Plaquemines LNG export facility in Louisiana, which is being constructed by a joint venture between KBR and Zachry.<o:p></o:p>

Golden Pass LNG had previously warned of potential delays in the construction of the project's first three trains, which are designed to produce up to 18 million metric tons per annum of LNG. <o:p></o:p>

This development threatens to disrupt plans to expand US LNG exports, with the United States currently being the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas.<o:p></o:p>

California's top-court on Tuesday deliberated whether voters had the authority to classify app-based drivers for companies like Uber and Lyft as independent contractors under Proposition 22 (Prop 22). <o:p></o:p>

The 2020 ballot measure, passed by nearly 60 per cent of California voters, exempts these drivers from a 2019 state law that mandates stricter employee classifications, entitling workers to greater benefits.<o:p></o:p>

The court heard arguments from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and four drivers who contend that Prop 22 is unconstitutional. <o:p></o:p>

Prop 22 permits app-based transportation services to consider drivers as independent contractors, provided they earn at least 120 per cent of the minimum wage while on a ride and receive expense reimbursements and health insurance subsidies.<o:p></o:p>

This remains a critical issue for the ride-service industry as the classification has a major impact on costs.<o:p></o:p>

Employees, unlike contractors, are entitled to benefits such as minimum wage, overtime pay, and expense reimbursements, potentially increasing costs by up to 30 per cent according to studies. <o:p></o:p>

Uber, Lyft, and other companies spent over $200 million campaigning for Prop 22, arguing that without it, the increased expenses could drive them out of California.<o:p></o:p>

The lawsuit's core question is whether Prop 22 improperly limits the legislature’s authority to regulate workers' compensation, a power that SEIU argues should be exclusive. <o:p></o:p>

However, a lower appeals court had previously rejected this argument, indicating that Prop 22 does not improperly constrain legislative power.<o:p></o:p>

During Tuesday's session, justices examined whether the California constitution grants exclusive regulatory power to the legislature or requires it to share this power with voters. <o:p></o:p>

Justice Goodwin Liu noted that Prop 22’s provisions apply specifically to labour code classifications, suggesting the legislature could still pass laws to extend benefits to app-based drivers if it chose to do so.<o:p></o:p>

Scott Kronland, representing SEIU, argued that a clause in Prop 22 restricting amendments makes it difficult for lawmakers to counteract the measure. <o:p></o:p>

Meanwhile, some justices expressed concern that allowing voters such control could undermine the legislature's absolute power, potentially leading to the elimination of the workers' compensation system, a situation described by Justice Joshua Groban as turning "plenary" power into something less absolute.<o:p></o:p>

This California case is part of a larger national debate on gig worker classification. <o:p></o:p>

Recently, Minnesota legislators passed a law setting new minimum wage standards for gig drivers, prompting Uber and Lyft to threaten to cease operations in Minneapolis. <o:p></o:p>

In Massachusetts, the state’s top court is considering competing ballot proposals regarding driver classification, and a trial has begun over the state attorney general's lawsuit accusing Uber and Lyft of misclassifying drivers to avoid providing employee benefits.<o:p></o:p>

The California Court is expected to issue a ruling within 90 days.<o:p></o:p>

Shares of India's Paytm have emerged as one of the worst performers globally, ahead of earnings release likely to indicate growing losses for the troubled payments network.

Paytm's stock has fallen by over 61 per cent in the last six months, ranking second in Bloomberg's World Index, which tracks large and mid-cap companies worldwide. It also ranks at the bottom of the Nifty 500 index.

The abrupt drop follows a big regulatory setback in January&nbsp;when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) ordered Paytm's banking unit to discontinue most operations. The RBI ordered Paytm Payments Bank Ltd. to halt all banking operations by March 15, causing a sharp drop in the company's stock. Despite being part of billionaire Vijay Shekhar Sharma's fintech empire, Paytm Payments Bank is independent of the publicly traded mobile wallet company.

Paytm's parent company, One 97 Communications Ltd., is expected to disclose a significant increase in fourth-quarter net loss on Wednesday, its first financial release after the regulatory restrictions were enforced. Analysts estimate the net loss to increase to 4.6 billion rupees ($55 million) from 1.7 billion rupees a year ago, while sales are likely to remain relatively steady at 23.4 billion rupees.

Bloomberg surveyed 16 analysts, seven of whom recommended selling the stock, while the remaining nine recommended buying or holding. The average 12-month price target is 468 rupees, 30 per cent more than the present price.

Anand Dama, an analyst at Emkay Global, predicts an additional 16 per cent loss, arguing that the fourth-quarter figures "won't capture the full extent of business disruptions caused by the drop in UPI and bill payment market share."

The RBI's intervention has also resulted in a wave of top departures from Sharma's fintech conglomerate, including Surinder Chawla, CEO of the banking section, and Bhavesh Gupta, Paytm's former COO and president.

As Paytm prepares for its forthcoming earnings statement, the business confronts rising obstacles from regulatory scrutiny and investor mistrust.

This announcement was made at the Build developer conference held in Seattle, where CEO Satya Nadella highlighted new application programming interfaces (APIs) which will simplify the adoption of AI technology in various software applications. Nadella highlighted the impact of developers utilising AI capabilities, noting their role in transformative technological advancements. He stated, "What stands out to me as I look back at this past year, is how you all as developers have taken all of these capabilities and are applying them, quite frankly, to change the world around us." One of the key highlights from the conference was Microsoft's generative AI tool, Github Copilot, which is now being used by 1.8 million developers to enhance coding productivity. This tool helps streamline the development process by generating code snippets and offering real-time assistance, thereby boosting efficiency and innovation. In addition to this, Microsoft detailed enhancements to its Copilot AI software, which is integrated into business productivity applications like email and Teams, the company's video and text chat platform. These improvements are part of Microsoft's continuing efforts to provide promising AI solutions that cater to everyday business needs, similar to the recent AI tools unveiled by Alphabet's Google. The tech giant also made waves in the stock market, with shares rising 1.2 per cent to $430.67 on Tuesday afternoon, following a record high of $432.97 earlier in the day. Microsoft's stock has surged 14 per cent in 2024, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s AI-driven future. Microsoft's announcement last week about offering cloud computing customers a platform of AMD AI chips, designed to compete with Nvidia's industry-leading graphics processing units, marks another significant development. This new platform leverages Nvidia's Infiniband networking technology to connect processors, promising enhanced performance for AI applications. Microsoft's chief technology officer Kevin Scott also revealed that OpenAI's new GPT-4o model, which operates on Microsoft's infrastructure, is now 12 times cheaper for developers compared to previous versions. Microsoft, being the largest investor in OpenAI, continues to integrate its advanced AI technologies into its own products, fostering innovation and reducing costs for developers. Microsoft unwraps new AI tools to empower developers: Report

The White House believes the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) needs a "fresh start" with new leadership free of the agency's long-standing cultural issues, a White House official said on Tuesday. This comes after FDIC Chair Martin Gruenberg announced his resignation amid a sexual harassment scandal.

Gruenberg, who has been involved in controversy for months, announced on Monday that he will step down after the Senate confirms a successor. His resignation could imperil upcoming bank capital increases and other major Wall Street rules championed by Democrats. With only six months until the presidential election in the United States, the Biden administration is under pressure to pick a replacement quickly to keep its financial reform agenda on track.

Insiders believe the White House will pick a female current federal employee to speed up the Senate approval process and fix the agency's corrosive culture. "If the White House announces a nominee tomorrow, the earliest we could expect a Senate floor vote would be September," writes Brian Gardner, Stifel Chief Washington Policy Strategist.

The administration is aware of the Senate's tight schedule and plans to bring a nominee to the Senate Banking Committee as soon as possible, according to the individual, who requested anonymity. Despite the crisis that erupted in November, Gruenberg, a Democrat, refused to retire. Gruenberg's decision appears to have been prompted by a statement issued Monday by Senate Banking Chair Sherrod Brown calling for fresh leadership.

The FDIC, a key bank regulator, is at a critical juncture as regional banks deal with persistent stress from last year's upheavals. The agency is also finalising significant new regulations for Wall Street banks, including capital increases. To replace Gruenberg without handing over control to Republicans, the Democratic-controlled Senate must confirm the new candidate.

A recent independent assessment revealed widespread misbehaviour at the FDIC that had gone unnoticed for years, citing occasions where Gruenberg, who had led the agency for over two decades, exhibited aggressive behaviour toward subordinates. This scandal, along with election uncertainties, may dissuade prospective candidates, analysts say.

Isaac Boltansky, BTIG's Director of Policy Research, raised concerns: "Finding a suitable candidate who can secure the necessary votes quickly, and whether that candidate would even be interested, is uncertain."

Potential nominees include Christy Goldsmith Romero of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), who is being re-nominated and may be quickly reassigned to the FDIC job, according to sources. Nellie Liang, Treasury Undersecretary for Domestic Finance, and Adrienne Harris, Superintendent of the New York State Department of Financial Services, are both considered good contenders, albeit Harris is not confirmed by the Senate.

Gruenberg, 71, is the FDIC's longest-standing board member, having joined the agency in 2005 and twice serving as chair. While he was not directly responsible for the agency's cultural concerns, he apologized for both misconduct during his term and his behaviour.

If Gruenberg steps down without a confirmed successor, leadership will fall back on Republican Vice Chair Travis Hill, resulting in a 2-2 gridlock that could postpone crucial regulatory changes indefinitely. These include Basel capital increases, long-term debt requirements for lenders, pay restrictions for bank executives and adjustments to bank merger policies.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized on Tuesday that President Biden is "taking this very seriously."

Xpeng unveiled an increase in the second-quarter delivery forecast during trading on Tuesday, following the company’s price cut strategy to seize ground in the Chinese electric vehicle market. The positive outlook helped its US-listed shares to rise by 8% and its Philippine shares by 5%.

Company target of delivering 29,000 – 32,000 vehicles during the second quarter would be a leap of 25% to 37%. This increase in projected deliveries implies that other business strategies that are commonly used by organisations about promotions, lower charges, or heavy investments in key technologies like AI and self-driving automobiles are working efficiently.

Lots of discounts are expected in the first Xpeng G6 and G9 electric SUVs, thus boosting delivery in the short run but there is a string warning from Xiaomi. The tough competitive rivalry within the still-growing EV market came under discussion especially regarding the possible effects of Xiaomi’s SU8 on Xpeng’s SUV line. Rosalie Chen, an analyst at Third Bridge, spoke about the Xiaomi’s SU8 and its influence on the SUV series of Xpeng.

However, its performance and strategic growth direction do not seem to be a problem; it is the external environment that threatens the company’s growth on the international level. Recent globalisation muscles were provided by the European Commission’s initiation of an anti-subsidy probe and recent US tariffs hikes, which have compounded the company’s global expansion move. However, Xpeng is not dettered, and is planning to launch a series of new models, ranging from 100,000 yuan to 400,000 yuan within the next three years. Firstly, it is the electric sedan that will be launched in the fourth quarter of the current year.

Specifically, company officials revealed five international strategies including increasing sales in more than twenty countries by offering subsidies on electric vehicles under environmental conservation measures. Yet, the regulation psyche and the tariff hike reveal that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are not without risks when seeking to go global.

Vietnamese automaker VinFast is facing accusations of patent infringement from steel giant ArcelorMittal. The US International Trade Commission (ITC) launched an investigation in April 2024 following a complaint filed by ArcelorMittal, alleging VinFast's vehicles utilise high-strength aluminium and aluminium alloy-coated steel that infringe on their patents.

This isn't the only legal action ArcelorMittal has taken. It has&nbsp;also filed a lawsuit against VinFast in the US District Court of California, specifically targeting the VinFast VF 8 electric SUV. VinFast began deliveries of the VF 8 in California in 2023. Apart from the lawsuit, the VF 8 SUV also received backlash from the customers owing to multiple glitches and issues with the SUV.&nbsp;

VinFast defends the allegations by confirming that it has sourced aluminium-coated steel components from a reputable supplier who has assured them they are not violating any intellectual property rights. The Vietnamese-carmaker further stated that this supplier has committed to indemnifying them for any damages incurred due to the patent infringement allegations.

The potential impact of this case extends beyond the immediate dispute. VinFast is planning to open its first North American manufacturing plant in North Carolina by 2025, with the VF 8 and VF 9 models slated for production in the new facility. A drawn-out legal battle could significantly disrupt these plans by interrupting the production of the entire range of VinFast models.

According to ArcelorMittal, their concerns include not just the VF 8 but the rest of VinFast lineup as well. They believe other VinFast models, including the VF 3, VF 6, and VF 7, may also infringe on their patents. To strengthen their case, ArcelorMittal reportedly purchased a VinFast VF 8 and subjected it to testing, in order to come up with detailed research on the infringement case.

VinFast has not sought a licence from ArcelorMittal to use the disputed technology. ArcelorMittal first contacted VinFast regarding the alleged infringement in November 2022, but no resolution was reached.

The ITC investigation and the lawsuit in California are ongoing. The outcome will determine whether VinFast has indeed violated ArcelorMittal's patents and, if so, what consequences they will face. This case serves as a reminder of the complex legal landscape surrounding intellectual property in the automotive industry. As car companies increasingly adopt new materials and technologies, such disputes are likely to become more common.

VinFast caught up with alleged violation of patents

Electric vehicle pioneer Nio and state-owned automotive giant FAW Group have forged a new strategic partnership focused on enhancing battery charging and swapping capabilities across China. According to official announcements from both companies on Wednesday, the landmark agreement paves the way for extensive collaboration in establishing technical standards and infrastructure to support Nio's innovative battery swap model.

The deal marks a significant milestone for Nio, which has been actively expanding its network of battery swap stations nationwide. With FAW Group now on board as the seventh major automaker in the battery-swapping alliance, Nio gains a powerful partner with vast resources and manufacturing expertise. The cooperation is expected to accelerate the deployment of swap stations, allowing Nio owners to quickly swap depleted battery packs for fully charged units during long journeys.

Facing growing competition in China's booming electric vehicle market, Nio has doubled down on its bet that battery swapping will be a key differentiator. The company's founder and CEO, William Li, recently outlined an ambitious vision wherein Nio's swap services could generate annual revenue of USD 10 billion as its user base expands to 100 times the current half-million vehicles. To support this growth, Li announced plans to add 1,000 new battery swap stations this year alone, building on the existing network of 2,415 locations.

However, Nio's heavy investments in swapping infrastructure have raised concerns among investors about the associated financial burden. The partnership with FAW Group could help alleviate some of these worries by leveraging the state-owned firm's vast resources and manufacturing capabilities. Together, the companies aim to establish industry-wide technical standards for battery swapping, paving the way for broader adoption and reducing fragmentation in the emerging ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Nio's domestic rival Li Auto has taken a more cautious approach, delaying the launch of its first pure electric SUV model until next year, citing challenges such as insufficient fast-charging infrastructure. As the competition heats up, strategic partnerships like the one between Nio and FAW Group could prove crucial in gaining a competitive edge and shaping the future of electric mobility in China.

As the world's largest automotive market, China's transition to electric vehicles is being closely watched by global players. The collaboration between Nio and FAW Group underscores the importance of establishing robust charging and swapping networks to support the widespread adoption of EVs. With both companies committed to advancing battery-swapping technology, this partnership could have far-reaching implications for the industry's evolution in the years to come.

Anthropic appoints Airbnb veteran Krishna Rao as Finance Chief amid expansion plans

On Tuesday, a federal appeals court restored an American Airlines pilot's case challenging the airline's failure to reimburse them for short-term military leave.

The 3rd United States Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia concluded unanimously, 3-0, that a reasonable jury may find short-term military leave equal to jury duty or bereavement leave, for which American Airlines pays.

The court's decision revives a class action case filed by pilots who took short-term military leave of 16 days or less from January 2013 to October 2021. These leaves averaged 3.3 days, compared to 1.8 days for jury duty and 2.7 days for bereavement leave. Pilots, on the other hand, took short-term military leave more frequently, averaging around 22 days per year, compared to about two days for jury duty and three days for bereavement leave.

Circuit Judge Arianna Freeman remarked that the lengths of these leaves were comparable, and pilots had little or no control over their timing. She said that jurors can see a shared purpose in military and jury duty leave, both of which are based on civic obligation.

The complaint was brought under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994, which requires employees on military leave to receive the same benefits as normal employees.

The plaintiffs, led by James Scanlan, a former major general in the United States Air Force Reserve, and Carla Riner, a brigadier general in the Delaware Air National Guard, claimed that American Airlines' policies violated this legislation. American Airlines has declined to comment on the ruling.

Jon Taylor, representing the pilots, hailed the ruling, saying it confirmed Congress' aim that military personnel are not disadvantaged while serving their country. He was optimistic about the approaching trial.

While the appeals court agreed with American Airlines on the pilots' profit-sharing arrangement, the case was remanded to U.S. District Judge Harvey Bartle III in Philadelphia. In November 2022, Judge Bartle dismissed the claim. The lawsuit began in 2018.

Hershey is facing a class action lawsuit over allegations that consumers were misled into believing that Reese’s peanut butter candies provided a higher level of accuracy than they did.

The lawsuit is a class action involving four Reese consumers from southern Florida who claimed to be "very disappointed" by the lack of colour in the candy products they bought in November 2022.

The plaintiffs—Nathan Vidal, Debra Kennick, Abdjul Martin, and Eduardo Granados—stated that they would not have bought the candies if they had known that there would be fewer "explicit carved out artistic designs" than what was shown on the packaging.

They highlighted differences between the advertised designs and the actual products, such as Halloween pumpkins that were supposed to have eyes and a mouth but were produced without them, and a football-shaped candy that looked like an egg because it lacked the expected stitches.

A lawsuit has been filed in the federal court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, seeking at least $5 million in damages.

The allegations involve nine types of Reese’s candies, including the Halloween and Christmas editions, as well as Reese’s Peanut Butter footballs and Reese’s Medals.

Responses from both Hershey and its legal representatives are still pending at the time of this writing.

A lawyer in Tampa, Florida filed a second lawsuit in December with a narrower scope compared to the previous one.

The case, which targeted a single defendant, was voluntarily dismissed yesterday.

Additionally, the lawyer has filed legal cases against Burger King and Taco Bell for serving food that did not match their advertising.

Saudi Arabia's national airline, Saudia Group, just made a big move by ordering over 100 new Airbus jets, showing the kingdom's big plans to grow its tourism.

The order, revealed on Monday, includes 105 planes from Airbus’s A320neo family, consisting of 12 A320neos and 93 A321neos. This purchase brings Saudia Group’s total order to 144 A320neo family planes.

Saudia Group, which includes both Saudia airline and its budget carrier Flyadeal, aims to increase flights and seating capacity across&nbsp;over 100&nbsp;destinations.

This expansion ties in with Saudi Arabia's goal to attract over 150 million tourists by 2030.

In Airbus's latest annual earnings report in February, the company announced strong performance in its commercial aircraft business and set a target of 800 commercial aircraft deliveries for the year, which is 67 more than in 2023.

This growth highlights Airbus's strong position in the market, especially compared to its US rival, Boeing.

Boeing, which was starting to recover from two deadly crashes of its Max jets in 2018 and 2019, faced another setback on January 5 when a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9.

This incident has further affected the company’s recovery efforts.

Airbus has seen great success with its A321neo, a single-aisle aircraft seating 180 to 230 passengers.

The "neo" designation refers to the "new engine option," showing the use of highly fuel-efficient engines that help airlines cut costs.

In response, Boeing introduced the Max, a 737 model with new, efficient engines, but faced numerous technical issues.

Despite Boeing’s ongoing challenges, Airbus is not expected to significantly widen its lead in the duopoly due to already operating at maximum production capacity, with over 8,600 orders to fulfil.
