<p>In 2019, the International Court of Justice asked the UK to let go of its control of the Chagos Islands, which it governed since 1814.&nbsp;The court's opinion came at the end of a long and sad saga for the Chagossians.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chagos Islands, a strategically significant archipelago in the Indian Ocean, comprises over 60 islands. Diego Garcia, the largest of these islands, is of military importance because of the US airbase.</p>

<p>The islands were largely uninhabited till around 1783, when the French settlers brought African slaves to work in the coconut plantations they had established there.</p>

<p>The British took control of the islands and nearby Mauritius in 1814, following the Napoleonic Wars which the French lost, leading to Napoleon’s abdication and exile.</p>

<p>It was governed as part of British Mauritius, and Indian indentured labourers were brought to the islands, as well as Mauritius, when slavery was abolished.</p>

<p>Chagos became a contentious land at the height of the Cold War in the 1960s when the US was looking for a military base in the Indian Ocean region. In 1965, Britain separated the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius and turned it into a British Indian Ocean Territory. It then leased Diego Garcia to the US to build the military base which started operating in 1971.</p>

<p>To facilitate the US, Britain forcibly displaced around 2,000 indigenous Chagossians from the island.</p>

<p>During this depopulation process, from 1967 to 1973, the Chagossians were moved thousands of miles away to Mauritius and Seychelles against their will.</p>

<p>In 1968, Mauritius gained independence from Britain, which retained its control of the Chagos Islands.</p>

<p>Diego Garcia's military base played a crucial role for the US during its wars in the Gulf and Afghanistan.</p>

<p>In its advisory opinion in 2019, the ICJ called for the end of the British administration of Chagos Island, noting that its decolonisation of Mauritius was incomplete.</p>

<p>Deveca Rose, 29, was convicted on Thursday (Oct 4) of manslaughter and child cruelty after her children - two sets of twins aged three and four - died despite efforts by neighbours, fire service and the police to save them.</p>

<p>On the fateful day of December 16, 2021, Rose left to shop at Sainsbury’s, leaving the boys Kyson, Bryson, Leyton and Logan in her Sutton, south London home that was strewn with rubbish bags and excrement.</p>

<p>Neighours tried to rescue the kids who screamed for help, but they could not enter the house due to smoke. Later, firefighters who entered the scene recovered the boys from under a bed where they were huggled together, but could not save their lives.</p>

<p>Social services personnel had tried to intervene after the dirty conditions in her house were reported to them.</p>

<p>But Rose did not engage with social service workers, and the case was dropped. If the authorities had intervened more forcefully, the kids could have been living now.</p>

<p>She initially told investigators that the kids were left with a babysitter. Prosecutors argued that the babysitter could not be located and probably doesn't exist, as CCTV footage did not show any such person.</p>

<p>Nibi was an orphan beaver baby when she was rescued by Newhouse Wildlife Rescue. She became a sensation over the years at the rescue centre with her friendly behaviour and cute antics. <p>They identified a 'stretch receptor' in the esophagus of the larvae&nbsp;that's linked to specific neurons in the brain of the fruit fly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They found that some of these neurons play a role in detecting the quality of food and the happy hormone 'serotonin' is released when the food is good.</p>

<p>"[The neurons] can detect whether it is food or not and also evaluate its quality. They only produce serotonin if good quality food is detected, which in turn ensures that the larva continues to eat," ScienceAlert quoted neuroscientist Andreas Schoofs from the University of Bonn as saying.</p>

<p>This then triggers more desire for eating.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This discovery, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, seeks to create awareness about risks of cannabis use at a time when many countries are relaxing norms around the drug, making it more freely available for women.</p>

But the planet is too close to the host star, closer than the habitable zone," team leader Jonay González Hernández, from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias in Spain, said.<br />
