<p>The visit of ICG's specialised vessel with an on-board helicopter to ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries is in pursuance of India's ASEAN Initiative for Marine Pollution, as announced by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in the year 2022 at Cambodia, during the ASEAN Defence Minister Plus Meeting.</p>

<p>During the three-day visit, the crew of ICGS Samudra Paheredar will engage in professional interactions focusing on Marine Pollution Response (MPR), Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR), and Maritime Law Enforcement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The contract includes the delivery of two Scorpene Evolved Full Lithium-ion Battery submarines that will be built in Indonesia within the PT PAL shipyard, thanks to a proven transfer of know-how and technology from Naval Group, and reusing 100 per cent&nbsp;of PT PAL assets.</p>

<p>"In addition to the submarines, our strategic partnership with PT PAL will also support the Indonesian defence industry to actively prepare the future of naval warfare in the country. We are pleased to welcome the Indonesian Navy in the Scorpene family”, said Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group.</p>

<p>During the three-day Philippines visit of Indian Coast Guard Ship Samudra Paheredar, the Pollution Response Vessel had a special visitor on-board - India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, who is also on a bilateral visit to the Southeast Asian nation.</p>

<p>The ICG vessel's visit to the Southeast Asian nation is part of a broader initiative to demonstrate the force's Marine Pollution Response capabilities and bolstering bilateral cooperation with the Philippine Coast Guard.</p>

<p>From Philippines, the ICG vessel would be proceeding to Vietnam and Brunei, in line with the India-ASEAN initiative announced by the Indian Defence Minister in the ASEAN Defence Minister Plus Meeting, Cambodia, in the year 2022. The ship is equipped with specialised marine pollution control equipment and Chetak Helicopter in Pollution Response configuration, designed to contain, recover spilled oil and augment the operation. The demonstration at visiting ports include Pollution Response training and practical display of various equipment.</p>

<p>This deployment to ASEAN nations is the third such by the ICG's vessels, as the Pollution Response ship has also visited Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, in 2023. &nbsp;</p>

<p>In the latest test, the 1.6-tonne spaceplane was underslung to an Indian Air Force Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, which carried the spaceplane to an altitude of 4.5 km and released it four&nbsp;km away from the runway. The plane was dropped in a position that was misaligned with the runway at a sideways distance of 150 metres. In the maiden landing test in April 2023, the plane was at the same distance and altitude away from the runway, but it was aligned straight to the runway, without a sideways distance from the runway.</p>

<p>On being released, the plane is meant to carry out all gliding and related manoeuvres fully autonomously, based on the real-time calculations of its onboard sensors and computers. According to ISRO, the RLV was made to undertake more difficult manoeuvres, when compared to the earlier landing attempt in April 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Explaining the sophistication and significance of this feat, Dr Unnikrishnan Nair, Director of ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, told WION that the goal of the latest test was to ensure that the spaceplane could manoeuvre itself to perfectly align with the runway and make the landing. Citing the picture of the 'Pushpak' vehicle that stood in line with the runway's centreline, he added that it was a testimony to the perfect landing that the plane had performed. Dr. Nair mentioned that each of the RLV landing tests is meant to demonstrate how the vehicle performs in different stages of its actual flight.</p>

<p>When compared to the landing mission done in April 2023, ISRO has enhanced the airframe structure (overall body) and the landing gear of the spaceplane, thereby equipping it to tolerate the higher loads of landing at speeds as high as 360kmph (around 100metres/second). It must be noted that fighter jets land at speeds ranging from 200-250kmph. ISRO said that the winged body and all flight systems used in RLV-LEX-01(April 2023) were re-used in the RLV-LEX-02 mission after due certification and clearances. Hence, the reuse capability of flight hardware and flight systems is also demonstrated in this mission.</p>

<p>ISRO said that the RLV team was guided by P. Sunil, Programme Director, Advanced Technology and Systems Programme, VSSC. J. Muthupandian, Project Director, RLV, served as the Mission Director and B Karthik, Deputy Project Director, RLV, was the vehicle director for this mission.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><b>The final configuration of the RLV</b></h2>

<p>In its present form, this RLV-TD vehicle is meant for demonstration purposes and the real vehicle would be about 1.6 times larger. Once fully ready, the operational version of the RLV or 'Pushpak' is meant to be mounted atop a modified GSLV rocket and then launched into space, where the spaceplane would be autonomously carrying out on-board experiments and operating its payloads.</p>

<p>The spaceplane could function in Low Earth orbit for up to a month and then autonomously perform de-orbiting, re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and come in to land on the runway. This ensures that the spaceplane can be fully re-used after carrying out a few refurbishments. In many ways, the RLV is similar to the space shuttle operated by the US and the Soviet-era Buran spaceplane. However, the RLV is much smaller and not a crewed plane, unlike the Space Shuttle and the Buran. RLV is comparable to the American Boeing X-37B spaceplane and the Chinese 'Shenlong' (Divine dragon), which have been performing unmanned missions for many years.</p>

The final configuration of the RLV In its present form, this RLV-TD vehicle is meant for demonstration purposes and the real vehicle would be about 1.6 times larger. Once fully ready, the operational version of the RLV or 'Pushpak' is meant to be mounted atop a modified GSLV rocket and then launched into space, where the spaceplane would be autonomously carrying out on-board experiments and operating its payloads. The spaceplane could function in Low Earth orbit for up to a month and then autonomously perform de-orbiting, re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and come in to land on the runway. This ensures that the spaceplane can be fully re-used after carrying out a few refurbishments. In many ways, the RLV is similar to the space shuttle operated by the US and the Soviet-era Buran spaceplane. However, the RLV is much smaller and not a crewed plane, unlike the Space Shuttle and the Buran. <p>One woman hailed from a village in the South of India and another woman hailed from the Northeast of the country, each one of them had to face their own challenge in pursuing their dreams. However, what brought them together is their desire and decision to serve the Indian Army, as officers.</p>

<p>Their respective journeys from Nanjamadai Kuttai village in Erode, Tamil Nadu, and Digboi, Assam, culminated at the Army Officers Training Academy, Chennai, which has been training women officers to serve the Indian Army, for more than three decades.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Army Officers Training Academy in Chennai offers ab initio training for qualifying youth and sculpts them into Army officers, all in a period of 11 months. The Passing Out Parade (comparable to a graduation day in civilian institutions) at the Army OTA is to take place on Saturday, March 9.</p>

<p>On the day of the Passing out Parade, officer cadets will formally be inducted into the Army in what is known as a Commissioning ceremony and their parents will&nbsp;get an opportunity to unveil the star (rank) that they wear on their shoulders.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hailing from Nanjamadai Kuttai, a village near Erode in Tamil Nadu, Saranya was born in an agrarian family of four. Right from the time of her secondary schooling, she had been known for breaking stereotypes and enjoying physical activities.</p>

<p>She admits to not having had a great academic bent of mind, and she began playing Kabaddi from 6th grade onwards and took the sport very seriously. As she moved ahead in her schooling, she noticed the village tradition of getting girls married early on. She had a deep desire to change this norm and be a pathbreaker, setting an example for the girls of her village.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On completing her civil engineering from the Kongu Engineering College, she became the first woman graduate in her family. On getting placed in IT services firm Cognizant, she worked there for six months and then decided it was time to move on to her love of sports - Kabaddi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Witnessing many young girls in her village being unable to pursue their dreams and passions, owing to the familial pressure of early marriage, Saranya thought of something that none had ever attempted in their taluk (subdivision of a district) - she aimed to become the first woman to join the Indian Army.</p>

<p>She embarked on this arduous journey, in the hope that the young girls in her village would be motivated to step out of their homes, dream big, and work towards achieving them and attaining their potential.</p>

<p>When her family got to know of her SSB preparation, they were apprehensive about it and wanted to get her married, as was the case with other girls in the village. In the face of this pressure, she remained resolute and requested her family's support. To prove her capabilities and merit, she took up a job at Coimbatore and supported her family's needs with the income and also went on to contest in open Kabaddi tournaments.</p>

<p>Testimony to her steely resolve is the fact that she made five SSB attempts and cleared the final one. It is laudable that she chose to try again and again, despite the pressure and apprehension at home.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the OTA, while she was in Chennai, the capital of her home state Tamil Nadu, she felt out of place as she did not know a word of Hindi. However, all it took was two months and she successfully adapted to the new ways, and witnessed significant improvement in her personality and progress. As she gets ready for the big day, she looks back at the tremendous transformation of a village girl into an Indian Army Officer.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Liuetenant Minerva Jaishy - The first woman officer from Digboi, Assam</strong></h2>

<p>Hailing from Digboi, Assam, she did her schooling at the Delhi Public School in her hometown. Excelling in both academics and sports, she got the opportunity to pursue her college education in New Delhi and earned her Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Political Science from Dayal Singh College.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While at college, the opportunity to serve in the National Cadet Corps was a life-changing decision for her, as it granted her the exposure and confidence to take on various challenges and work in teams. As the Junior Under Officer of her college NCC, she represented the institution in sports and other events. Her experience as an NCC cadet instilled a fascination for a career with the Indian Armed Forces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Her native town, Digboi, Assam comes under the Tinsukia district, which has been an AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) imposed region.</p>

<p>While it has been largely peaceful, there have been insurgent activities, and for the people living there a career in engineering or medicine is the most preferred option. The youth there and their families don't think beyond these conventional professional courses. Even Minerva's own family, hailing from the Gorkha community was surprised at her career choice.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Right after college, she attempted the SSB exam twice. In the latter attempt, she secured the All India First Rank in the Short Service Commission (Women) - 53 entry and became the first candidate from her home state Assam to be ranked first.</p>

<p>At the time, the Indian Army's 18 Garhwal Unit was posted in Digboi and they felicitated her and highlighted her achievements before the NCC cadets in the town, with the aim of motivating them to join the Armed Forces.</p>

<p>Minerva believes that it is a matter of convincing the people and helping them understand the importance of the Indian Army's service and positive impact on the nation's security.</p>

<p>With her training now completed, even her parents who were initially surprised at her decision are extremely proud of their daughter for having chosen a career with the Indian Army. She isn't the first Army Officer of her family alone, she's the first one from her school and the first woman officer from all of Digboi, Assam.&nbsp;</p>

One woman hailed from a village in the South of India and another woman hailed from the Northeast of the country, each one of them had to face their own challenge in pursuing their dreams.

One woman hailed from a village in the South of India and another woman hailed from the Northeast of the country, each one of them had to face their own challenge in pursuing their dreams. However, what brought them together is their desire and decision to serve the Indian Army, as officers. Their respective journeys from Nanjamadai Kuttai village in Erode, Tamil Nadu, and Digboi, Assam, culminated at the Army Officers Training Academy, Chennai, which has been training women officers to serve the Indian Army, for more than three decades. The Army Officers Training Academy in Chennai offers ab initio training for qualifying youth and sculpts them into Army officers, all in a period of 11 months. The Passing Out Parade (comparable to a graduation day in civilian institutions) at the Army OTA is to take place on Saturday, March 9. On the day of the Passing out Parade, officer cadets will formally be inducted into the Army in what is known as a Commissioning ceremony and their parents will get an opportunity to unveil the star (rank) that they wear on their shoulders. She had a deep desire to change this norm and be a pathbreaker, setting an example for the girls of her village. On getting placed in IT services firm Cognizant, she worked there for six months and then decided it was time to move on to her love of sports - Kabaddi. Witnessing many young girls in her village being unable to pursue their dreams and passions, owing to the familial pressure of early marriage, Saranya thought of something that none had ever attempted in their taluk (subdivision of a district) - she aimed to become the first woman to join the Indian Army. She embarked on this arduous journey, in the hope that the young girls in her village would be motivated to step out of their homes, dream big, and work towards achieving them and attaining their potential. When her family got to know of her SSB preparation, they were apprehensive about it and wanted to get her married, as was the case with other girls in the village. In the face of this pressure, she remained resolute and requested her family's support. To prove her capabilities and merit, she took up a job at Coimbatore and supported her family's needs with the income and also went on to contest in open Kabaddi tournaments. Testimony to her steely resolve is the fact that she made five SSB attempts and cleared the final one. It is laudable that she chose to try again and again, despite the pressure and apprehension at home. At the OTA, while she was in Chennai, the capital of her home state Tamil Nadu, she felt out of place as she did not know a word of Hindi. However, all it took was two months and she successfully adapted to the new ways, and witnessed significant improvement in her personality and progress. As she gets ready for the big day, she looks back at the tremendous transformation of a village girl into an Indian Army Officer. Liuetenant Minerva Jaishy - The first woman officer from Digboi, Assam Hailing from Digboi, Assam, she did her schooling at the Delhi Public School in her hometown. Excelling in both academics and sports, she got the opportunity to pursue her college education in New Delhi and earned her Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Political Science from Dayal Singh College. As the Junior Under Officer of her college NCC, she represented the institution in sports and other events. Her experience as an NCC cadet instilled a fascination for a career with the Indian Armed Forces. Her native town, Digboi, Assam comes under the Tinsukia district, which has been an AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) imposed region. While it has been largely peaceful, there have been insurgent activities, and for the people living there a career in engineering or medicine is the most preferred option. The youth there and their families don't think beyond these conventional professional courses. Even Minerva's own family, hailing from the Gorkha community was surprised at her career choice. Right after college, she attempted the SSB exam twice. In the latter attempt, she secured the All India First Rank in the Short Service Commission (Women) - 53 entry and became the first candidate from her home state Assam to be ranked first. At the time, the Indian Army's 18 Garhwal Unit was posted in Digboi and they felicitated her and highlighted her achievements before the NCC cadets in the town, with the aim of motivating them to join the Armed Forces. Minerva believes that it is a matter of convincing the people and helping them understand the importance of the Indian Army's service and positive impact on the nation's security. With her training now completed, even her parents who were initially surprised at her decision are extremely proud of their daughter for having chosen a career with the Indian Army. She isn't the first Army Officer of her family alone, she's the first one from her school and the first woman officer from all of Digboi, Assam.

<p>Interestingly, by naming the base after a bird (Jatayu - a reference to the vulture from the Ramayana epic), the Indian establishment has clearly indicated that it intends to eventually operate air assets from this location, which is barely 150km&nbsp;away from Maldivian islands. The commissioning of INS Jatayu comes shortly after the inauguration of an airstrip and jetty that India built at Agalega, Mauritius.</p>

<p>The Indian Navy's presence at Minicoy, which straddles the vital Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOCs) or busy maritime highways, is not a recent development. Naval Detachment Minicoy was setup in the early 1980s.</p>

<p>However, with INS Jatayu being commissioned, more infrastructure, personnel and resources are to be added. Jatayu will be the Indian Navy's second base in the Lakshadweep archipelago, where the force already operates the base INS Dweeprakshak at Kavaratti, approximately 250km&nbsp;north of INS Jatayu at Minicoy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He adds that the entire Arabian sea region is a contested one, with China delivering four frigate-class warships and eight diesel-electric submarines to the Pakistani Navy, and Turkish-origin drones that would become a part of Maldives' inventory.</p>

<p>Notably, Maldives has taken a blatantly pro-China stance since President Muizzu came to power last year. Amid such a rivalry in the region, India is looking to make the most of the Lakshadweep and Minicoy islands on the west and the Andaman and Nicobar islands on the east, he opines.</p>

<p>However, he highlighted that it would be extremely challenging to base aircraft on a permanent basis at an island base that will need to contend with the vagaries of southwest monsoon, the associated harsh weather conditions, and the inevitable dependence on intermediate level support infrastructure that require vast tracts of land.</p>

<p>"I doubt if naval aircraft that are maintenance intensive would be stationed permanently at INS Jatayu. Such basing requires infrastructure built not just to brave storms and harsh weather, but to manage the complexity that causes corrosion, etc. India does have an airstrip at Agatti, further North in the Lakshadweep islands, but is it used to permanently base aircraft?," he asks.</p>

<p>He believes that INS Jatayu would serve well as an Advanced Landing Ground or forward base with facilities for aircraft turnaround, servicing and related support facilities. "Essentially Jatayu would in this capacity provide for air traffic control and other basic frontline support infrastructure,"&nbsp;he concluded.</p>
