<p>According to Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre, (IN-SPACe), the centre features a range of facilities including the Climate Simulation Test Facility (CSTF), the Thermal and Vacuum Environment Simulation Facility (TVAC), the Vibration Test Facility (VTF), the Space Systems Assembly Integration Testing &amp; Checkout Laboratory, the RF and Opto-Electronics Laboratory and Clean Rooms for Assembly, Integration and Testing activities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Simply put, these facilities would help firms test their hardware under harsh space-like conditions. For example, during a rocket flight, a satellite is subject to high levels of noise and vibration from the launch vehicle that is piercing through the dense layers of earth's atmosphere and heading towards space. Likewise, once in space, the satellite faces extreme temperature variations and exposure to radiation. Therefore, it is important to intensively test expensive space hardware for operating in such conditions before getting them integrated into a rocket or satellite.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They also experienced micro-gravity (weightlessness) while flying in special aircraft that are meant to induce such a space-like condition. Astronauts have to be able to handle high G-forces that are experienced during spaceflight. People on earth experience a sustained load of 1G Force (which means that a person would experience and feel their actual body weight). However, those who are travelling in rapidly accelerating/decelerating fighter planes or rockets experience multi-fold G Force. WION had earlier reported that Indian astronauts would experience a sustained load of 4G for about 16 minutes, when ascending to space. Effectively, this means that an astronaut who weighs 70kg, would feel like he weighs 280kg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fighter pilots are known to handle such high G Force scenarios and encounter almost 9G during their missions and training. Which is why fighter pilots are the preferred candidates for astronaut training. However, in the case of a mid-flight abort of the astronaut-carrying capsule, the Gaganyaan astronauts would experience loads of 12G, for a few seconds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian astronaut candidates completed their Russian training and returned to India in 2021. Since then, they have also undergone several theoretical and practical sessions at ISRO's Human Spaceflight Centre and the Indian Air Force's Institute of Aerospace Medicine. They have also been visiting various ISRO centres, such as ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram and Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.</p>

<p>As a part of the Gaganyaan team, they are also assisting ISRO with the design and development of the crew-carrying capsule. At India's Human Spaceflight Centre in Bengaluru, they have also been undergoing simulator training and physical training.&nbsp;</p>

Best of both worlds - Indian astronauts will benefit from Russian and US training

<p>India will soon be among the elite league of nations that own and operate two or more spaceports - facilities from where rockets can be assembled and launched into space. So far, only the US, Russia, China, and Japan are known to operate two or more spaceports. Having two or more spaceports offers flexibility and the ability to perform a greater number of launches, thereby increasing commercial activity.</p>

<p>A spaceport is established by considering various factors - geographical location, weather conditions, and availability of vast tracts of uninhabited land, among others.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India established its first spaceport, Satish Dhawan Space Centre (initially known as Sriharikota Range), in the year 1971. Since then, this facility in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh has been India's only spaceport that allows launches into space.</p>

<p>All iconic missions including the Chandrayaan series, Mangalyaan, Aditya-L1, and launches by startups have been carried out from here. At present, Sriharikota has two launchpads belonging to ISRO, Government of India. All operational Indian rockets can be launched from these two launchpads.</p>

On Wednesday morning, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the upcoming spaceport to the nation, via virtual mode, in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. The Bhumi Puja and groundbreaking ritual for this upcoming spaceport was performed at the Kulasekarapattinam launch site, which is spread across approximately 2,300 acres.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Why does India need a new spaceport? What's so special about Kulasekarapattinam?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Both Sriharikota and Kulasekarapattinam are situated on India's east coast. However, Kulasekarapattinam is about 700 kms south of Sriharikota and is very close to the southern tip of the Indian peninsula.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sriharikota is best suited for launching heavier rockets into equatorial orbits (orbits where the satellite circles on a path above the earth's equator). Rockets launched from anywhere on the east coast (provided it is closer to the equator), are aided by the velocity of the earth's West-East spin and get an additional boost.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, when launching rockets towards polar orbits (orbits where the satellite circles above the earth's poles), the rockets that fly south from Sriharikota face the risk of flying over the Sri Lankan landmass. There are numerous risks of rockets flying over inhabited regions, given that rockets detach their used-up stages mid-flight.&nbsp;Rocketry is also a high-risk domain where mid-flight mishaps occur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Therefore, all launches towards the south pole being performed from Sriharikota are done in a manner that the rocket takes a detour and avoids overflying Sri Lanka. Instead of flying directly and in a fuel-efficient manner, the rocket is made to take a diversion and spend more fuel.</p>

<p>This affects the performance and payload-carrying capacity of rockets. This effect is not felt much in the larger rockets, but it affects smaller rockets, such as India's Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) and the ones being built by Indian startups.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Given the location of Kulasekarapattinam, just by the tip of the Indian peninsula, rockets can fly straight from the upcoming spaceport to the south pole, without having to overfly Srilanka. This way, the rockets fly in a fuel-efficient manner and can deliver maximum payloads to Polar orbits.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Given that smaller rockets are easier to build and assemble, and can be launched quickly, it is important for India to have a dedicated spaceport for such smaller rockets. Notably, smaller rockets are also attractive to foreign and domestic customers who are looking to launch small satellites at low costs. Given the technological leaps, satellites are getting smaller and more efficient, therefore the demand for launching smaller satellites on smaller rockets is also growing at a global level. India hopes to make the most of this emerging opportunity with its fleet of small rockets (built by ISRO and startups).</p>

<p>To aid the industrial and space ecosystem in the region, the Tamil Nadu Government also announced the setting up of a Space Industrial and Propellant Park near Thoothukudi District. The facility is expected to be spread across 2,000 acres. Having such a facility near the new spaceport would ensure efficient logistics and supply chain management.&nbsp;<br />

This means that the satellite has been imparted higher energy and it would thus be gradually lowered to a 36,000 km circular orbit. He added that, as a result of the rocket's overperformance, the satellite would be spending lesser fuel to descend to the intended 36,000 km orbit. This would happen in coming days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Somanath told WION that INSAT-3D weather satellite, which was launched in 2013, would soon be repurposed to perform some experiments, as it has encountered some performance deteriorations. The ISRO chief did not elaborate on the specific nature of the experiments and its objectives.&nbsp;</p>

From emphasizing the Indian Muslim identity to offering history lessons on how Pakistan came to be as a nation-state, Moideen Bhai is the ultimate protector of Hindu-Muslim unity and peace.&nbsp;<br />

<p>The chiefs of the Indian and Russian Nuclear Power establishment paid an inspection visit to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, which is a joint project between the two nations and the flagship project of bilateral technological and energy cooperation.</p>

<p>Rosatom State Corporation and Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India, inspected the power units being constructed in the second and third stages of the Kudankulam NPP and discussed the long-term cooperation agenda.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Rosatom, following the discussions between the officials, a significant document was signed under the joint Russian-Indian project, namely a protocol to the intergovernmental agreement on the construction of power units of the second and third stages of the Kudankulam NPP as of 2008.</p>

<p>India's largest nuclear power project Kudankulam is meant to have six 1,000 Megawatt Power plants, with a total installed capacity of 6,000 Megawatts. Of this, the first plant was operationalised in 2013 and the second was operationalised in 2016.</p>

The Russian-Indian nuclear cooperation lies deep in the first intergovernmental documents on the Indian NPP of Russian design that were signed back in the eighties of the last century. <p>As per the manifest, private firm Agnikul is expected to perform their test launch to the upper atmosphere, by March 2024. Between April 2024 and March 2025, Skyroot plans to perform four spacefaring rocket launches, while Agnikul plans to have two.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Industry bodies from India and Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday (February 7) aimed at furthering co-operation between space sectors of both the countries. The space economy, currently pegged to be worth USD 450 billion is expected to see rapid growth in coming years with more private players entering the field in addition to traditional space agencies run by governments.</p>

<p>The MoU is between the Satcom Industry Association-India (SIA-India) and the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA). This has established a platform for the exchange of expertise and the formulation of best practices in critical areas of space and defence. The MoU was inked in the presence of the Indian Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and the Australian High Commissioner to India, Philip Green.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Recent developments between India and Australia in the space sector, including collaborative satellite projects, data sharing for weather monitoring, and joint research initiatives, showcase a promising era of partnership. Initiatives like Australia’s ISI fund, aimed at space sector partnerships, aligns with our shared vision," said Anil Prakash, Director General, SIA-India.</p>

In June 2024, SIAA will take part in the Indian Space Congress, where industry leaders, policymakers, and experts will come together to discuss the latest trends, innovations, and collaborative opportunities in the space domain.</p>

<p>In two years, the Indian Army could get their hands on indigenously-designed and developed 155mm Smart Artillery shells that offer 50 times more accuracy than existing ones. IIT-Madras and the Government-run Munitions India Limited (MIL) have partnered on developing this ammunition, which will be guided by the Indian constellation of NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) satellites, formerly known as Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to IIT Madras, Prof G. Rajesh, Faculty, Department of Aerospace Engineering, and his team of researchers will be developing the smart ammunition, which will later be manufactured by Munitions India Limited, a Government-run firm engaged in the Production, Testing Research and Development and Marketing of a comprehensive range of ammunition and explosives for the Army, Navy, Air force and Paramilitary Forces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The team's objective is to increase the accuracy of 155 mm shell within a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of 10 metres. At present, ammunitions developed in India have a CEP of 500 m. Another key goal is to increase the lethality at the terminal impact point.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Based on the specifications of this proposed artillery shell, it can be fired from 155mm artillery guns, without any changes in the gun system. Unlike conventional shells, it will have its control surfaces that will help in manoeuvrability-fin-stabilised, canard-controlled, guided shell. It is expected to have a minimum range of 8kms and a maximum range of 38km. This Smart shell also offers three modes of detonation, such as - point detonation, height of burst, delayed detonation.&nbsp;</p>
