<p>Korsakov, a Russian Cosmonaut, who spent longer than six months continuously on the International Space Station, spoke to WION on the sidelines of an event organised by Space Kidz India, an organisation for promoting enthusiasm for space exploration and nurturing young minds in the fields of science and technology.</p>

<p>Korsakov and Kazakh cosmonaut Aiden Aimbetkov were at the Young Scientist India, National Innovation Challenge 2024, organised by Space Kidz India, where they recounted their rigorous training, challenging missions and experience in space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to WION, Korsakov said that he had to study and train for 10 years on various theoretical and practical subjects to be able to undertake his spaceflight mission on Russia's Soyuz MS-21, which launched in March 2022.</p>

<p>On his duties aboard the orbiting lab, he said it would involve completing multiple science and engineering tasks, among&nbsp;other specific roles. In his case, he was tasked with operationalising the European Robotic Arm, the first robotic arm to be attached to the Russian segment of the International Space Station.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While Korsakov's mission lasted a little longer than six months, looking back, he wishes he could've stayed for a year. When asked about the delayed mission of Williams and Wilmore, he said that even the American duo had expressed happiness that they got to spend longer in space.&nbsp;</p>

To stay fit and healthy, all of us aboard the ISS workout more than two hours every day,&nbsp;cardio and weight training," he added. He also stated that getting acclimatised to life on earth would be tougher and would take longer, as space stay&nbsp;gets longer.</p>

<p>"It is my dream to go back to the Space Station. As a cosmonaut, I would like to explore- Moon, Mars, other planets,"&nbsp;he concluded&nbsp;in true cosmonaut spirit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russia, the world's only operator of ships that can break through thick oceanic ice sheets (nuclear-powered icebreakers), carried out an international scientific expedition to the North Pole. Russia's nuclear power agency, Rosatom, was appointed the infrastructure operator of the Northern Sea Route, a Europe-Asia sea route that passes almost entirely through the frozen Arctic, large parts of which are within Russia's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The respective countries would have rights over living and non-living resources in their EEZ, which is typically the stretch that extends 200 nautical miles from their shores. Rosatom considers the development of the Arctic infrastructure and shipping as one of its key tasks.&nbsp;<br />

<p>Indian Coast Guard's Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) ICGS Sujay with an on-board helicopter made a port call at Jakarta, Indonesia, as part of its ongoing overseas deployment to East Asia. This marks a pivotal milestone in diplomatic maritime engagement.</p>

<p>During the ongoing visit, the crew of ICGS Sujay will engage in professional interactions focusing on Marine Pollution Response (MPR), Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR) and Maritime Law Enforcement.</p>

This will be done with local youth organisations, contributing to the Indian government's “Puneet Sagar Abhiyan” initiative.</p>

<p>In a maiden initiative, two women ICG officers embarked onboard for the Overseas Deployment will also be representing “Women in Maritime Security and Safety” while interacting and participating in bilateral cooperative engagements.</p>

<p>In July 2020, the Indian Coast Guard signed a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indonesian Coast Guard towards enhanced maritime cooperation and institutionalised its cooperative engagements.</p>

<p>The Indian Coast Guard is conducting a two-week International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Oil Preparedness Response and Cooperation (OPRC) course for India's Friendly Foreign Countries.</p>

<p>The course is being conducted for participants from seven ASEAN countries, with two officers each from Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia.</p>

<p>The training is underway at the newly-inaugurated Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC), Chennai. The facility was inaugurated last week by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.</p>

<p>As the Central Coordinating Agency for marine oil spill responses at the national level, the Indian Coast Guard is dedicated to supporting regional countries in building their capabilities for effective pollution management.</p>

<p>The center will oversee emergency incidents by providing advisory and support through a dedicated Emergency Response Centre. A 24/7 emergency hotline has been established at the centre to offer real-time assistance to response managers, guiding them on response strategies, techniques, and equipment.&nbsp;</p>

This study was performed by the ChaSTE (Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment) probe. Notably, this study is done during the Lunar day, when sunlight is available at the landing site. Lunar nighttime temperatures could be much colder. A high-energy laser pulse is focused onto the surface of a material, such as rock or soil. The laser pulse generates an extremely hot plasma. The collected plasma light is analysed by sensors, and the elemental composition of the material is determined. ISRO's preliminary analyses had unveiled the presence of Aluminium (Al), Sulphur (S), Calcium (Ca), Iron (Fe), Chromium (Cr), and Titanium (Ti) on the lunar surface. Further measurements have revealed the presence of manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), and oxygen (O). Thorough investigation regarding the presence of hydrogen is underway, ISRO had said in August 2023. Let's imagine that the Chandrayaan-3 lander wants to take off again and come back. In that case, it would have to fire its engines and almost launch itself like a rocket and reach Lunar orbit. As a minor step or hop towards that ambitious future goal, the Vikram lander of Chandrayaan-3 was commanded to perform a hop test, which it successfully performed. Think of the hop as an exercise move - jumping up from a point and landing a few centimetres beside where you started from. By performing this manoeuvre, ISRO has re-fired the engines of the Vikram lander and gathered valuable data on engine firings on the Lunar surface. "On command, it (Vikram Lander) fired the engines, elevated itself by about 40 cm as expected and landed safely at a distance of 30 - 40 cm away. <p>The Indian Navy's 1st Training Squadron (1st TS) comprises numerous training ships that offer hands-on training for newly-minted Indian Navy officers, before they go on to serve aboard frontline warships. <p>The Indian Coast Guard's mission to ensure zero life loss at sea, tighten maritime security, and to protect the oceans and marine life, received a boost, as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated three new facilities in Chennai and Puducherry.</p>

<p>This is a first-of-its-kind facility for coordinating response against marine pollution, particularly oil and chemical pollution, in waters adjoining the coastal states in the Indian Ocean Region. The creation of this centre was first announced by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh during the maiden Indo-ASEAN meeting held in Cambodia on November 22, 2022.</p>

He was in the city to preside over the inauguration of three facilities for the force. In the evening, Director General Pal was to take part in the inaugural event organised at the Coast Guard's Region East Headquarters in the city, but he had to be rushed to a nearby hospital hours prior to the commencement of the event, as he complained of discomfort.&nbsp;</p>

He was an able and committed officer under whose leadership ICG was making big strides in strengthening India’s maritime security. <p>Amid the sudden health setback suffered by the ICG Chief, Defence Minister Singh had cut short his participation in the ICG event and only performed the inauguration. The officer also held&nbsp;the recognition of being the First Gunner of ICG. &nbsp;</p>

<p>In his distinguished career spanning over 34 years, the flag officer held several key appointments afloat and ashore. He had&nbsp;a vast sea experience and had&nbsp;commanded all classes of ICG ships, namely ICGS Samarth, ICGS Vijit, ICGS Sucheta Kriplani, ICGS Ahalyabai and ICGS C-03. The Officer had&nbsp;also commanded two Coast Guard Base of forward area in Gujarat - Okha &amp; Vadinar.</p>

<p>During the period under his apex supervision, many major operations and exercises were successfully accomplished. <p>Indian astronaut candidates and Air Force Test pilots, Group Captains Shubhanshu Shukla and Prashant Balakrishnan Nair&nbsp;— who have now spent more than a week at NASA's Johnson Center, Houston, Texas&nbsp;— will be training at the American astronaut training facility for three months or longer, ISRO Chief Dr S. Somanath exclusively told WION.</p>

<p>The Indian duo are training to take part in a US-led mission to the International Space Station, an orbiting lab that circles 425kms above the earth. Recently, India's Human Spaceflight Centre (HSFC) had entered into a spaceflight agreement (SFA) with Axiom Space Inc, an American firm that has been identified by NASA.</p>

<p>Axiom is a private firm that facilitates a ride to space for paying customers. In this case, Axiom will facilitate the spaceflight of a chosen Indian&nbsp;astronaut, aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.</p>

<p>Falcon 9 is the only contemporary American rocket with a proven track record of performing multiple&nbsp;astronaut-ferrying missions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to ISRO, India's primary Gaganyatri (space traveller) for this mission will be Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and the backup candidate will be Group Captain Prashant Balakrishnan Nair. One among them will be later approved to fly to the International Space Station (ISS) by the Multilateral Crew Operations Panel (MCOP) which is responsible for choosing the Indian candidate who will fly to the ISS.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During his stay in space, as part of the Axiom-4 mission, the chosen Indian&nbsp;astronaut&nbsp;will be undertaking scientific research and technology demonstration experiments aboard the ISS.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><b>What is Gaganyaan? What is India prepping its&nbsp;astronaut&nbsp;candidates for?</b></h2>

<p>India has revealed the names of four&nbsp;astronaut&nbsp;candidates who are to fly on the country's homegrown 'Gaganyaan' programme that aims to fly an&nbsp;astronaut-carrying capsule to earth orbit (400kms above the planet's surface) and bring them back safely for an oceanic splashdown landing. Gaganyaan was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, as India's maiden mission to fly humans (trained&nbsp;astronauts) to space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gaganyaan would be carried out by the Indian Space Agency ISRO, with test pilots of the Indian Air Force, serving as the crew members. The four candidates (Group Captains Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, Shubhanshu Shukla, Ajit Krishnan, and Angad Pratap) have already completed their training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, Moscow.</p>

<p>In recent years, they have also been undergoing training at ISRO and Indian Air Force facilities, while also assisting ISRO teams in designing and developing some systems required for Gaganyaan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gaganyaan is the first step in a series of sustained human spaceflight missions that India wants to carry out in a phased manner. By the end of this decade, India hopes to put an uncrewed space station in Earth orbit. By 2035, it would be used as a crewed Indian outpost that's circling the earth.</p>

<p>India also plans to land its&nbsp;astronauts on the moon by 2040, a feat that only America has accomplished in 1969, and China hopes to do so by the end of this decade.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><b>Soviets flew 1st Indian to space in 1984; US to fly 2nd Indian to space in 2025</b></h2>

<p>40 years ago, in 1984, Indian Air Force Pilot Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma flew to space as part of the Soviet Interkosmos programme. He is the only Indian to have flown to space. He did so on the Soviet Soyuz T-11 mission to the Salyut-7 space station, a lab that circles above the Earth.</p>

<section>Gaganyaan is India's own attempt at launching&nbsp;astronauts to space on a largely homegrown mission, with support from the US, Russia, and France, among others. Of these, Russia(erstwhile Soviet Union) and the US are the pioneers of human spaceflight, since the Cold War era.&nbsp;</section>

<p>In 2023, during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's State visit to the US, President Joe Biden had announced that 'NASA would provide advanced training to Indian&nbsp;astronauts at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, with a goal of mounting a joint effort to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2024'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Given that India's only experience of human spaceflight comes from Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma who flew fourty years ago, the 2024 mission to the ISS is expected to offer significant insights and experiences related to contemporary spaceflight and relevant technologies. This would offer crucial lessons to ISRO and its chosen candidate, as it prepares for the homegrown Gaganyaan mission.</p>

<p>At present, India is in the process of gradually testing various systems and technologies required to execute an uncrewed Gaganyaan mission, slated for later this year or in early 2025. After a couple of flawless uncrewed missions, India will embark on the&nbsp;astronaut-carrying mission, perhaps, by 2026.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><b>Maiden Gaganyaan flight trial in Dec 2024</b></h2>

<p>Following the successful launch of the SSLV-D3/EOS-08 mission, ISRO Chief Dr S.Somanath said that the agency is looking to launch the maiden uncrewed trial of the Human-rated Gaganyaan rocket and its crew module. ISRO has dubbed this mission 'G1'.</p>

Barely 14 minutes after launch, the 120-ton rocket placed its primary payload, a 175kg 'EOS-08' earth-imaging satellite in an orbit that's 475kms above the earth, following which a privately-built secondary payload was ejected into orbit. This successful mission marked the third demonstration flight of India's newest and smallest rocket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The initial two or three flights of a rocket are known as developmental flights. These launches are meant to test and prove the crucial systems and technologies aboard the rocket. <p>Speaking after the successful launch mission, ISRO Chief Dr S.Somanath said that the EOS_08 satellite and the co-passenger were placed in a precise orbit with no deviations. He added that the SSLV development process is complete and the following step would be to Transfer the SSLV technology to the Indian industry and commence the serial production of the rocket. In due course, ISRO hopes to perform multiple launches with SSLV and turn it into a reliable workhorse rocket. From three developmental flights in three years, SSLV will now move to the operational phase, said SS Vinod, the Mission Director of SSLV-D3/EOS-08.&nbsp;</p>
