The strategic calculus in the Indo-Pacific is rapidly shifting as Japan shifts its defence policy away from being a pacifist state and India emerges as a pivotal security partner. India and Japan grow in cohesion and this expanding Special Strategic and Global Partnership is causing a change that expansionist states and states exporting terror to the world, cannot afford to ignore.<h2>Rise of the India-Japan league</h2> Japan-India ties have evolved over two decades as one of the most prominent partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region. Post WWII, Japan was mandated to adopt strict pacifism prohibiting it from maintaining military forces with war potential. But with the rise of China in the last two decades and rapid increase in regional threats, Japan has been pushing for a more hawkish defense posture and tied up closely with India. The purposeful collaboration very effectively counterbalances China’s growing regional influence, placing India at the cornerstone of Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) strategy. <h2>Pakistan's mounting fears</h2> Japan and India associate closely for India's civil nuclear program with Japanese firms supplying nuclear materials and cutting-edge reactor technologies to India. The India-Japan Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy entered into force on July 20, 2017. The agreement paved the way for enhanced cooperation in energy security and clean energy. Japan has grown increasingly vocal in its support for India's national security, publicly condemning cross-border terrorism. Clearly, that would irk Pakistan. In Fact, the defence ministers of both countries had a meeting in New Delhi, hours before Op Sindoor was launched in May 2025. According to SIPRI, India may have started deploying a nuclear warheads with operational forces for the first time, with an estimated 12 warheads. There is no confirmation of this report from Indian authorities, yet Pakistan seems concerned.<h2>Indo-Pacific: Shifting the power balance</h2> India and Japan are finalising co-production of the advanced UNICORN radar to deepen defense ties.It will improve naval stealth capabilities as it is considered among the most technologically advanced antennas in the world. But India was the second Asian nation to have such an agreement with Tokyo, first was the Philippines, which is already armed with India's formidable supersonic cruise missile, the Brahmos. Vietnam and Indonesia will also be priding themselves with Brahmos, which effectively makes four nations in the Indo-Pacific armed with this warhead. And all these nations have similar woes with a common state.

Currently, India has only two tri-service commands, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) and the Strategic Forces Command to handle India’s nuclear assets and 17 individual service commands. Initial plans of the Indian armed forces suggest that these individual commands will be consolidated into five theatre commands: the Northern Land Theatre, Western Land Theatre, Eastern Land Theatre, Maritime Theatre Command and a Logistics Command.&nbsp;

Under the new structure, all theatre commanders will report directly to Chief of Defence Staff, aligning India with the practices of nations like the United States and China.&nbsp;

While the US is preparing to offer its cutting-edge weapons technology to India, it hopes to use India itself as a weapon because India is the silver bullet the U.S. needs. First, let’s look at how the deal will benefit India. BOOSTING INDIA’S AIR PROWESS India and the US are on the verge of signing a mega defence deal to jointly manufacture indigenous jet engines, under which the GE-F414 fighter-jet engine will soon be made in India. This is the same engine used in the Boeing Super Hornets and Gripen fighter jets. With an estimated thrust of 98 kN, it will power India’s highly-anticipated LCA TEJAS Mk2 and other advanced aircraft in the future. Also read | India, a NATO state? Whose gain, whose loss? Under the deal, there are also talks of the US MQ-9 reaper drones being fast-tracked to India. This is the same drone that the US used to assassinate Iran's military general Qasem Soleimani and former al-Qaeda Chief Ayman Al-Zawahiri at his home in Kabul, Afghanistan. After aviation engines, the India-US partnership will eventually extend to engines powering Indian military ships along with air combat, land mobility systems, intelligence, surveillance, munitions, and the undersea domains. Watch this report: × BOOMING DEMAND for TEJAS Mk2 India's LCA Tejas Mk 2, along with the F414 engine will replace India’s ageing MiG-29, Mirage-2000s, and Jaguars. The Mk2 variant of Tejas will be armed with weapons like the Scalp, Crystal Maze, and Spice-2000. For air-to-air combat, it will be armed with the indigenous Astra Mark 1 and Mark 2 missiles and will be capable of carrying about 8-10 BVR (beyond visual range) missiles. From Malaysia to Argentina, a total of 16 countries have already approached India to seek details of the Tejas Mk2. THE SILVER BULLET US NEEDS The US is not leaving any stone unturned to pursue India, and why won’t they? Given India’s massive defence spending, which is majorly benefiting Russia at the moment, the US definitely wants a piece of the pie for its own gains and to cut off Russia. Currently, 45% of India’s defence imports are from Russia while a mere 11% are American. The other reason is India’s strategic location and control in the Indo-Pacific region where the US is desperately trying to establish itself, to counter its arch-rival China. "India is now one of our premier security partners in the Indo-Pacific," said Major General Julian C. Cheater, US Air Force during Aero India 2023. US wants India to be a part of NATO plus, a group allied with 'Western' military powers. India's inclusion in NATO Plus is being suggested to counter China and enhance the <a href="https://selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/ten-for-taiwan-pdf.pdf">deterrence for Taiwan</a>. The question is, does joining NATO benefit India or does it actually benefit the West?&nbsp;

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance of 31 nations, mainly the US and some European countries. NATO Plus includes five more member nations considered allies of the US – namely: Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and Israel. And now the US is inviting India to be a part of this larger group which stands together against adversaries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The motto of NATO is, "One for all and all for one". This basically means, If you attack one member, you’ll face the combined wrath of them all. This, in an ideal world, would mean greater military backing for India in case it joins NATO Plus.&nbsp;

Jeopardising India’s Strategic Autonomy: NATO membership may also affect India’s strategic autonomy over its nuclear arsenal. A European Parliament report on EU strategic autonomy 2013-2023 mentioned how European nations fear that <a href="https://www.europarl.europa.eu/RegData/etudes/BRIE/2022/733589/EPRS_BRI(2022)733589_EN.pdf">increasing their strategic autonomy may lead to constraints in free trade</a>. 
&nbsp; 
US military base in India?: 

Till now, India does not host any foreign military base on its turf – but joining NATO Plus would mean the US will eventually have a military base in India as well. Just look at the other NATO plus members, all of which are hosting US military bases today. (US military bases: JAPAN – 24, SOUTH KOREA – 15, AUSTRALIA – 2, ISRAEL – 1) 
&nbsp; 
Being part of NATO would essentially mean that India will get dragged into America’s conflicts. And India will do so, as not anything more than a follower or lackey of the US and this is a concern already expressed by France, a key Nato member state.&nbsp;

But here comes the irony – that, while the US is preparing its allies for sanctions on China, its own trade with China, has actually surged in the previous year to an all-time high of $690.6Bn. Both Imports and Exports have increased. Imports from China have increased to $536.8bn and exports to China have increased to $153.8bn.

So if India joins NATO on America’s recommendation...whose gain will it be?

US wants India to be a part of NATO plus, a group allied with 'Western' military powers. India's inclusion in NATO Plus is being suggested to counter China and enhance the deterrence for Taiwan. The question is, does joining NATO benefit India or does it actually benefit the West? What is NATO Plus? The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance of 31 nations, mainly the US and some European countries. NATO Plus includes five more member nations considered allies of the US – namely: Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and Israel. And now the US is inviting India to be a part of this larger group which stands together against adversaries. What does India gain from NATO? The motto of NATO is, "One for all and all for one". India, a NATO state? Whose gain, whose loss?

With much bravado, the West has come together to provide Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets and the United States has given a green signal as well. But why is the US asking European allies to supply American-made jets to Ukraine instead of doing so on its own? And why are Western nations so eager to hand over their F-16s to Ukraine? All the optics aside, what is the F-16 coalition? What is the West’s F-16 game plan?&nbsp;

<h2>THE SO-CALLED 'F-16 COALITION'&nbsp;</h2>

A coalition of European countries is gearing up to help Ukraine operate US-built F-16 fighter jets. They will train Ukrainian pilots to fly these beasts and will eventually supply the jets to Ukraine. The United Kingdom and the Netherlands formed the coalition on May 16, 2023. Belgium, Denmark and Poland have all shown similar interest.

<h2>WHEN WILL UKRAINE GET F-16s?&nbsp;</h2>

Training pilots for a new jet can take well over a year, but a recent US Air Force report indicated that the training for Ukrainian pilots on the F-16 can in fact be completed in just four months

But when exactly will Ukraine receive the F-16s? Well, pardon the pun, but it's still up in the air.&nbsp;

<h2>OLD STOCK DUMPING?</h2>

Most Western nations like the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Poland are in the process of phasing out their F-16s now. They will be replaced with the more advanced American F-35 Lightning II fighter jets.&nbsp;

So when the US encourages Western allies to support Ukraine, they’re essentially dumping their old fleet of retired F-16s onto Ukraine to buy new ones.&nbsp;

Guess who will benefit? It's a no-brainer. The US military complex will continue to thrive with more sales of fighter jets. Lockheed Martin’s COO, Frank St. John spoke to Financial Times and mentioned that Lockheed Martin will "ramp up production of F-16s in Greenville (South Carolina) to get to where we can backfill pretty capably any countries that choose to do third-party transfers to help with the current conflict".&nbsp;

Just evaluate the situation – on one side you have Ukrainian pilots flying F-16 jets rejected by the West, also with bare minimum pilot training.&nbsp;

And on the other hand, you have Russia equipped with the S-400 surface-to-air missile defence system, against which the F-16s will probably not stand a chance.&nbsp;

In any case, some military experts have said F-16s are not going to be a game changer, despite all the brouhaha. Having said that, it's clear the Russians will surely see Ukraine’s F-16 usage as an escalation and could deploy its own jets in retaliation which are far superior.&nbsp;

F-16 fighter jet coalition: Is the West preparing Ukraine for a suicide mission?

Satellite images have revealed China’s intelligence facility being set up in the Great Coco Island. This is barely 50km from India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands – making it yet another location where Indian and Chinese forces will come face to face.&nbsp;

For years, China has been attempting to carve out a circle of threats around India. But today's India is different from the one China faced in 1962 and it is prepared for all possibilities. "If you want peace, you must prepare for war," said the Indian Navy Chief Adm Hari Kumar at the Chanakya Dialogues, and that is exactly what India is doing.&nbsp;

Here’s how India is checking and preparing to shred China’s threat circle.

China's ring of fire in South Asia&nbsp;

From Galwan Valley in Ladakh to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh or Doklam in Bhutan, China has made it clear it does not understand or follow the status quo with India. But the inflated dragon balloon has sprouted up at more venues to create a fringe around India.&nbsp;

	<li>Chittagong port, Bangladesh:&nbsp;China has been pressuring Bangladesh to permit a naval facility close to Chittagong, giving it direct access to the Bay of Bengal.</li>
	<li>Great coco, Myanmar:&nbsp;In Myanmar’s coco islands, reports suggest that China has been preparing ground ever since 1994. Satellite images show China’s 2,300-metre runway and radar station on the island. It's just 50 km from India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands.</li>
	<li>Kyaukpyu, Myanmar:&nbsp;China also has access to a commercial maritime facility in Myanmar’s Kyaukpyu just across from India that can double up as a military facility.</li>
	<li>Hambantota port, Sri Lanka:&nbsp;In the south of India, Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port has been leased to China for 99 years and China berthed its ship Yuan Wang-5. China said it's a research and survey vessel but experts say it was at the port to spy on India.</li>
	<li>The Maldives:&nbsp;In neighbouring Maldives, China has been investing heavily to gain control. It has propped up an opposition leader there as well. Reports suggest that the Maldives already owes China $1.4 billion.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>

India’s counter: A great shield of armour

Be it the Indo-Pacific, Indian Ocean Region or the LAC, India is expanding its security network to cut off China wherever they attempt to expand itself or overstay its welcome:&nbsp;

S-400 missile defence system: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has deployed its first S-400 squadron near Pathankot, from where any air attack from China on Ladakh, Himachal and Uttarakhand can be thwarted. Another S-400 squadron has been deployed at India’s Chicken neck in the Northeast to counter China.&nbsp;

Airbase at LAC:&nbsp;India is also upgrading its Nyoma airfield in Eastern Ladakh for fighter jet operations. With this, India will have its jets parked less than 50 kilometres away from the LAC.&nbsp;

Indian Arms at LAC:&nbsp;India’s Akash missile system has been deployed facing China. Army has deployed medium-range artillery guns, long-range rockets, around 75 Ultra Light Howitzer M-777, K-9 Vajra Tracked Self-Propelled Howitzers, Pinaka rocket systems and Dhanush gun systems.&nbsp;

Indian Army is procuring anti-drone systems, rough terrain vehicles and loitering munitions to hit the high-value targets from across the LAC.&nbsp;

Garud Elite Commandos:&nbsp;India has deployed its Garud Special Forces of the IAF along the LAC from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh. They are India’s elite commandos equipped with cutting-edge weapons. They’ve been deployed for carrying out "specialist operations".&nbsp;

Boots on ground:&nbsp;India has sanctioned 9,400 fresh troops for seven new border battalions. They will be utilised for manning 47 new border posts in Arunachal Pradesh.&nbsp;

Helipads:&nbsp;Almost all forward posts along the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh will have a large helipad each.&nbsp;

India’s Tri-service command:&nbsp;India has a tri-service theatre command located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The command comprises the Indian Navy, Army and Air Force. It is India’s biggest strategic asset to counter China. It can directly cut off China from the Strait of Malacca which is the heartbeat of China's operation as 80 per cent of its oil supplies pass through the strait.&nbsp;

Maldives Connect:&nbsp;While China invests in Maldives, India has forged deep ties with Maldives to cut off China here as well. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently visited Maldives, gifting them a fast patrol vessel and a landing craft.&nbsp;

Apart from its readiness, India has also forged military partnerships and diplomatic ties with the US, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

That pretty much leaves China with only one real ally in the South Asian region: Pakistan. Do you agree India will be able to checkmate China in case of a conflict in the South Asian region?&nbsp;

How India checkmates China's circle of threat in South Asian region

There was a time when Western powers never imagined India could have any need for an intercontinental ballistic missile, in a partially declassified CIA intelligence report from 1990, the US said, "We see little benefit to India of developing an ICBM-class (more than 5500km) missile.

There was a time when Western powers never imagined India could have any need for an intercontinental ballistic missile, in a partially declassified CIA intelligence report from 1990, the US said, "We see little benefit to India of developing an ICBM-class (more than 5500km) missile." Well, it's 2023 and times have changed. There are only seven countries in the world that possess Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) and India is one of them. Not just this, India is on course to create its own rocket force as well. Here’s a look at India’s upcoming missiles: 'K' missiles: India’s submarine-launched ballistic missile, name K-5 (K stands for ‘Kalam’), with a range of 5,000 km is currently under development. Reports suggest, that with the emergence of the S4 and S4* Class of submarines, K-5 developmental trials will start soon. The 'Agni' Missiles: Agni which means ‘fire’ is an Indian missile series. Agni Prime is India’s next-generation nuclear ballistic missile which India has successfully tested already. It is 10.5 metres tall and can carry warheads up to 1.5 tonnes. The missile range is between 1000-2000 kilometres. The 'Akash NG': The ‘Akash’ meaning sky, is the name of an indigenous Indian surface-to-air missile. This new generation Akash missile known as Akash-NG is a successor to the Akash One series with improvements in kill and range. It is built to boost the Indian Air Force defence system and can intercept high manoeuvring aerial threats like fighter jets, cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles. Vietnam has been closely monitoring the development of the Akash-NG and is already eager to procure it. They are currently using the Israeli SPYDER-SR-MR. The Brahmos Sequels: Coming next in the Brahmos series is the Brahmos’ next generation, which will be half the weight (approx. 1.33 tonnes) of Brahmos and smaller in size. It is being developed for LCA Tejas and would significantly bolster the combat capability of the aircraft. It will have a range of 290 kilometres and a speed of Mach 3.5. Then there is the Brahmos 2 which is coming up as well – it will be India’s Hypersonic version of the Brahmos that will have a range of 600 kilometres with a speed of Mach 8. Watch this report: × Astra Mk-II: Astra is an Indian family of all-weather, beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles. The Astra Mk 2 is an advanced variant of the indigenous Astra missile. It will be able to strike at a distance of over 160 kilometres. Trials are going on and a sneak peek of the missile was given by the Indian Air Force on its 90th Air Force Day. RUDRAM: The next-generation anti-radiation missile Rudram-1 has been successfully tested. It is used to search and destroy enemy radar locations. Now, Rudram-2 is being developed by India with a range of 300kms. It will be air-launched and initially test-fired from the Su-30MKI. The Amogha ATGM: The man-portable Anti Tank Guided Missile (ATGM), Amogha-III has successfully been tested in a field firing recently. It is the latest 3rd generation ATGM which boasts a fire-and-forget capability, requiring no external intervention following launch. It is smokeless and has a range of up to 2,500 metres. It has both top and direct attack modes. There are also talks of a K-6 missile with a range of 12000kms under-development in India which has already made the West insecure because they just can’t understand why India needs to prepare for a target beyond China. India’s domestic procurement climbed to 68 per cent in FY22. Armenia signed a $250 million contract for India’s Pinaka missiles. 1) India will soon finalise a Brahmos deal with Indonesia and a follow on deal with the Philippines over and above the $ 375 million Brahmos deal signed last year. 2) India is supplying air-to-air missile launchers and sub-systems to MBDA France for Rafale fighter jets 3) India also exports bulletproof jackets, ballistic helmets, snow boots, and night vision devices used by soldiers in Europe, West Asia, Africa and ASEAN nations. India supplies the world We are witnessing India’s emergence as a defence-manufacturing hub as it supplies equipment and ammunition to the world: 1) India is making aero-structures for American Defence giant Boeing's AH-64 Apache helicopters 2) Airbus Defence And Space recently signed a Rs 21,935 crore ($2.7bn) deal to build C-295 medium-lift transport aircraft at Vadodara. 3) Another American defence giant Lockheed Martin has tied up with India to make wing sets for the F-16 Block 70 fighter aircraft. 4) Indian Army recently handed over 159 indigenously developed vehicles & equipment for UN Peacekeeping mission at UNISFA, Abyei. India presently exports defence supplies to over 80 countries. India’s next target is achieving defence manufacturing worth Rs 1,75,000 crore ($21.4bn), including defence exports of Rs 35,000 crore ($4.3Bn) by 2024-25. He joined the Islamic separatists in the 1990s for Chechen independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Soon he became the chief of security in Chechnya in 2003. He was then promoted to prime minister, but once he reached the required minimum age of 30 in 2007, Putin nominated Kadyrov as Chechen president. Kadyrov has a militia in Chechnya which is ready to fight at Putin’s command. They're extremely feared and have been accused of torture, kidnappings and assassinations by various human rights, but the Chechen president has routinely denied the claims. Kadyrov has deployed his militia in Ukraine since the beginning of the war and has now vowed to Putin that he will fight until victory in Ukraine. Kadyrov, allegedly even sent his own teenage sons to Putin’s war. Soon after Russia’s invasion, he published a video of his sons, aged 14, 15 and 16, firing missiles in a shooting range. Kadyrov has even advocated the use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine. For him, winning this war for Putin is everything. His emergence in Moscow surely hints at an even uglier turn in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The pendulum effect As Biden reached Ukraine, China's top diplomat Wang Yi headed in the opposite direction. He was on his way to Russia, a trip that will bring China's growing ties with Russia into focus. While relations between the US and China continue to plummet, China and Russia are closer than ever since their leaders declared a "no-limits" friendship a year ago. Iran on the other hand has supported Russia in the war by providing it with drones. Iran’s relations with China have also been strengthening as was proven by Ebrahim Raisi’s recent visit to China. Iran, China and Russia all seem to have common ground now and Biden’s recent visit to Ukraine will only further strengthen this new collaboration between the three nations. He is also dealing with continuing issues of gun violence, racial tensions and the fallout of the abortion ban by the Supreme Court, even as the US economy is still affected by the Covid pandemic-related slowdown, inflation and high energy prices.
