5 Ways in Which Stress Affect Your Immune System

Chronic stress can negatively impact the immune system in several ways, making the body more susceptible to infections and illness. Here's how stress can affect your immune function:

Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system. High levels of cortisol over time reduce the body's ability to produce white blood cells, essential for fighting infections.

While short-term stress can lead to an increase in the immune response, chronic stress can cause prolonged inflammation. This persistent inflammation weakens the immune system.

Stress can alter the way immune cells function, reducing their ability to recognize and attack pathogens. This can make the body more vulnerable to viruses and bacteria.

Chronic stress has been shown to slow down the body's ability to heal wounds. This is because stress reduces the production of proteins involved in the healing process and overall tissue repair is compromised.

Stress can disrupt the gut microbiome, which plays a crucial role in supporting the immune system. A stressed gut can lead to an imbalance in good and bad bacteria, weakening overall immunity.

<p>New Zealand offered a rare national apology on Tuesday to the victims and families of hundreds of thousands of young people and adults who went through “unimaginable pain” within children’s homes and psychiatric hospitals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is historic in the case of people subjected to institutional physical and sexual abuse over the last 70 years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The apology came after a public inquiry in July found some 200,000 children and vulnerable adults in state and faith-based care experienced some form of abuse from 1950 to 2019.</p>

<p>"It was horrific. It was heartbreaking. It was wrong. And it should never have happened," Prime Minister Christopher Luxon told survivors and their families at parliament in Wellington.</p>

<p>Not only the plain apology, the New Zealand government will also initiate work on 28 recommendations from the inquiry and will provide its full response in early 2025, the prime minister said.</p>

New Zealand offered a rare national apology on Tuesday to the victims and families of hundreds of thousands of young people and adults who went through “unimaginable pain” within children’s homes and psychiatric hospitals. This is historic in the case of people subjected to institutional physical and sexual abuse over the last 70 years. The apology came after a public inquiry in July found some 200,000 children and vulnerable adults in state and faith-based care experienced some form of abuse from 1950 to 2019. "It was horrific. It was heartbreaking. It was wrong. And it should never have happened," Prime Minister Christopher Luxon told survivors and their families at parliament in Wellington. "I am sorry you were not believed when you came forward to report your abuse," Luxon said in an address delivered to parliament. "But I hope that today, with this apology and the acknowledgement of your burden, it becomes a little lighter for some of you," the PM added. Child, young people abused in New Zealand care A July 2024 investigation found that at least 200,000 children, young people and vulnerable adults have been abused in New Zealand state and faith-based care. It means almost one in three children in care from 1950 to 2019 suffered some form of abuse, including being subject to rape, electric shocks and forced labour, according to the Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry. Famous Female Authors Who Wrote Under Male Pseudonyms

Several notable female authors in history wrote under male pseudonyms to avoid gender bias and gain acceptance in the literary world. Here are few famous examples.

The British author of Middlemarch and Silas Marner wrote under the name George Eliot to avoid stereotypes about women being limited to writing light romance novels.

Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte initially published their works under the male pseudonyms Currer Bell, Ellis Bell and Acton Bell respectively. They did this to ensure their works would be taken seriously.

Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin (George Sand)

A French novelist, George Sand was famous for her novels like Indiana and Lélia. She adopted a male pseudonym to challenge the conventions of her time and freely express her political and romantic views.

Best known for Little Women, Louisa May Alcott used the pseudonym AM Barnard for her early, more sensational works such as Behind a Mask and A Long Fatal Love Chase.

While Harper Lee didn’t use a male name, she used her middle name 'Harper' instead of 'Nelle,' which is more commonly associated with women, to avoid gender bias when publishing To Kill a Mockingbird.

<p>For the first time in many years of Benjamin Netanyahu’s tenure as Prime Minister of Israel, he has been denied an invitation to address the annual conference of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA). The event is set to be held this week in Washington DC.</p>

<p>Instead, President Isaac Herzog will represent the state of Israel at the largest annual gathering of North American Jewish leaders.</p>

<p>When asked why an invitation had not been extended to Netanyahu, a spokesperson for the JFNA said,&nbsp;"No comment."</p>

<p>This is the first major sign of discontent towards Netanyahu and his policies that even Jewish legacy organisations like the JFNA, which have typically refrained from criticising the Israeli prime minister publicly, have snubbed him this time.</p>

<p>Last year when the JFNA General Assembly was held in April, the annual event was held in Tel Aviv, to mark Israel’s 75th anniversary.</p>

<p>In 2023 as well, there were reports that people might block roads near the venue where the conference as anti-government protests were hot at that time.</p>

<p>Therefore, to avoid the optics disaster, Netanyahu cancelled his in-person address at the confab.</p>

<p>At the time, the focus of the protest movement was the Netanyahu government's planned attempt to eviscerate the judiciary.</p>

<p>A poll commissioned by the JFNA in April found that while American Jews overwhelmingly support Israel, nearly two out of three were uncomfortable with actions taken by its government.</p>

<p>The annual assembly will kick start a few hours after a big rally in support of the state of Israel, organised by both the JFNA and the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organisations. For the first time in many years of Benjamin Netanyahu’s tenure as Prime Minister of Israel, he has been denied an invitation to address the annual conference of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA). The event is set to be held this week in Washington DC. Instead, President Isaac Herzog will represent the state of Israel at the largest annual gathering of North American Jewish leaders. When asked why an invitation had not been extended to Netanyahu, a spokesperson for the JFNA said, "No comment." This is the first major sign of discontent towards Netanyahu and his policies that even Jewish legacy organisations like the JFNA, which have typically refrained from criticising the Israeli prime minister publicly, have snubbed him this time. In 2023 as well, there were reports that people might block roads near the venue where the conference as anti-government protests were hot at that time. Therefore, to avoid the optics disaster, Netanyahu cancelled his in-person address at the confab. At the time, the focus of the protest movement was the Netanyahu government's planned attempt to eviscerate the judiciary. A poll commissioned by the JFNA in April found that while American Jews overwhelmingly support Israel, nearly two out of three were uncomfortable with actions taken by its government. The annual assembly will kick start a few hours after a big rally in support of the state of Israel, organised by both the JFNA and the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organisations. The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday (Nov 17). Around 30,000 participants are expected to gather at the event.
