A horrific incident took place in Jakarta, Indonesia on Tuesday (July 2) when a man found his wife inside the stomach of a snake in the jungle.

36-year-old Siriati was visiting her brother and the two had to go to market together to purchase the medicine in Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi.

However, she was attacked by a gargantuan 30ft-python which held her leg by its teeth while she was trekking along a forest trail.

The woman was crushed to death after she was coiled by the killer reptile who then started to swallow her.&nbsp;

The woman's husband Adiansa started worrying about his wife when her brother called and informed him that she did not reach his house.&nbsp;

He went through the same route and on that trail, found her slippers on the grass. The man, then, stumbled upon a huge snake that had 'a very large belly' and was lying on the ground just some steps away from the path.

The man saw Siriati’s legs coming out of the python’s mouth and her slippers and pants lying on the ground.

He found a wooden stake and killed the snake, by piercing it through the body. With the help of the villagers, he opened the stomach of the snake and found the lifeless body of Siriati.

They recovered the corpse and buried her in the village of Siteb the next morning.

Siteba Village Secretary Iyang said that the mother of five was killed by the snake around 7:30 am local time.

<h2>Snake dragged the victim for five metres&nbsp;</h2>

"The victim wanted to go out to buy her child's medicine. Her youngest son is three years old. She was visiting her brother and had to go through the forest first," the secretary said.

"Her brother waited for a long time, but the victim didn't come. That's why her brother called the victim's husband. The husband said that Suriati had left&nbsp;early morning," he added.

"So the husband went looking for his wife, he found her sandals on the road in the middle of the forest. He suspected that they had been eaten by a snake because there were snake tracks there," Iyang further stated.

Walenrang Police Chief Adjunct Police Commissioner Idul said that the body of Siriati was found intact. "This snake more or less dragged the victim five metres from the location," he added.

"The condition of the body was intact but perhaps the bones had been crushed. The body is already at the funeral home for a religious ceremony," he said.

Idul stated that there was a wound on the leg of the victim which appeared like a snake bite.

"We think it was a snake bite. After being bitten, it immediately wrapped itself around the leg and finally paralysed the victim," he said.&nbsp;

The famous ancient Durandal sword, which is also called the French version of King Arthur’s legendary “Excalibur”, had a mysterious disappearance after remaining lodged in a rock for the last 1,300 years.

According to a report published in The Telegraph, a thief appears to have stolen the Durandal sword from its stone, even though it was wedged and chained to the stone 32ft off the ground.&nbsp;

The sword had remained in the tiny medieval town of Rocamadour and was one of the main attractions of the town.

It has been believed for centuries that the sword was once wielded by semi-legendary knight Roland who had fought wars for Charlemagne in the eighth century.

An investigation has been launched by the officials in Rocamadour into the mysterious disappearance of the sword.

This theft has led to the clifftop village losing its prized tourist attraction with Mayor Dominique Lenfant stating that locals feel like a part of them has been stripped off.

Speaking to a French newspaper La Depeche, Mayor Lenfant said that the town has been devastated.

"We're going to miss Durandal. It's been part of Rocamadour for centuries, and there's not a guide who doesn't point it out when he visits," she added.

"Rocamadour feels it's been stripped of a part of itself, but even if it's a legend, the destinies of our village and this sword are entwined," the mayor said.

<h2>What do legends say about the mysterious sword?</h2>

According to the legend, Durandal is the sharpest and indestructible sword in the world. It is able to cut through stone using a single blow.

The magical qualities of the sword have been vividly described in the 11th-century epic poem “The Song of Roland.”&nbsp;

The poetry has been written in old French and is the French literature's oldest surviving major work. Its only surviving copy has been kept at the Bodleian Library in Oxford, as per the Telegraph.

The legend says that an&nbsp;angel gave Durandal to former Roman emperor Charlemagne which he gifted to his best soldier.

Before meeting his death at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass, Roland had made efforts to break the sword on the rocks so that his enemies would not take it with them but had failed to destroy it.

He then threw the sword into the air and Durandal then travelled hundreds of miles before it got stuck in the cliff in Rocamadour, narrated the legend.

The monstrous storm Hurricane Beryl, which was classified as Category 5 and went from a tropical storm to the strongest Atlantic hurricane in June ever recorded, had gone through rapid intensification to reach this stage.

The storm had struck the Grenadine Islands&nbsp;with 150 mph winds and a destructive&nbsp;storm was created on July 1, 2024, which continued to intensify into the earliest Category 5 storm in the basin on record.&nbsp;

Extensive damage was caused by the hurricane, particularly on Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Speaking at a press briefing, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said, "In half an hour, Carriacou was flattened."

<h2>What was uncommon about Hurricane Beryl?</h2>

It was pretty much unusual for the storm to gain strength and rapid intensification at such an early stage in the season.

The intensification was especially alarming even though forecasters were predicting exceptionally active Atlantic hurricane season.

In cases of such rapidly intensifying storms, the coastal communities face danger. For example, in 2022, portions of Florida were devastated by Hurricane Ian after it went through rapid intensification.

The residents have been recovering from its effects to this day. When Hurricane Beryl moved through the Caribbean Sea, hurricane warnings were issued in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

<h2>Why did the Hurricane Beryl rapidly intensify?</h2>

In a hurricane, rapid intensification happens when its intensity increases by nearly 35 mph over a 24-hour period.&nbsp;

Hurricane Beryl had exceeded the threshold and moved from tropical storm strength at 70 mph to major hurricane strength at 130 mph in just 24 hours.

Warm water is the main reason that triggers rapid intensification. The ocean temperature should be greater than 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius), which is more than 150 feet below the surface.&nbsp;

The energy required to turbocharge a hurricane is provided by the reservoir of warm water.

The reservoir of energy is measured as ocean heat content by the scientists. The ocean heat content which pushed Hurricane Beryl was extraordinarily high in comparison to the last years.

In a normal scenario, the ocean heat content does not reach such extraordinarily high levels in the tropical Atlantic till early September, which is when hurricane season generally peaks in activity.

In a new study, it has been found how inconvenient is death as an event for a living brain.&nbsp;

A cascade of effects has been observed as oxygen starts depleting and translating the DNA in its last efforts to save the life.

The scientists have compared the post-mortem brain tissue and samples collected from living patients in which significant differences were revealed for the first time in the way the RNA strands are modified.

The researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York emphasised the way specific base codes of adenosine (A) are swapped with very different bases, which is inosine (I) in messenger RNA.

"Until now, the investigation of&nbsp;A-to-I editing&nbsp;and its biological significance in the mammalian brain has been restricted to the analysis of postmortem tissues,"&nbsp;genomicist Michael Breen said while speaking to Science Alert.

"By using fresh samples from living individuals, we were able to uncover significant differences in RNA editing activity that previous studies, relying only on postmortem samples, may have overlooked," he added.

For changing the genes - which were encoded by double-stranded helixes of DNA - to functional proteins, their sequences need to be copied into different formats based instead on RNA.&nbsp;

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee's video, in which he is mocking the poll slogan of Bharatiya Janata Party ‘abki baar 400 paar’ while speaking in the&nbsp;Lok Sabha, went viral on Tuesday (July 2).

“They played the game with ‘abki Paar 400 paar.’ There are many games, and chu-kit-kit is one of them,” Kalyan Banerjee said.

While speaking about the game, an MP from West Bengal’s Srerampur constituency said that their slogan ‘400’ had resonance with ‘chu’ and it came to end with ‘kit-kit’.

“You only won 240 seats and still lost that game,” he said.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee's video, in which he is mocking the poll slogan of Bharatiya Janata Party ‘abki baar 400 paar’ while speaking in the Lok Sabha, went viral on Tuesday (July 2). “They played the game with ‘abki Paar 400 paar.’ There are many games, and chu-kit-kit is one of them,” Kalyan Banerjee said. While speaking about the game, an MP from West Bengal’s Srerampur constituency said that their slogan ‘400’ had resonance with ‘chu’ and it came to end with ‘kit-kit’. “You only won 240 seats and still lost that game,” he said. In a new study, scientists have found that the crashing of an atmospheric comet in the atmosphere of Earth set the planet on fire nearly 12,000 years ago.&nbsp;

The geological history of our planet is hidden in the layers of dirt and stone where lies the evidence of celestial impacts, ancient cultures and climatic shifts.&nbsp;

Approximately 12,800 years ago, the Earth witnessed extreme environmental change during the Younger Dryas period and the planet even caught fire due to the crashing of a comet.

During this period, the planet witnessed a significant climatic shift which abruptly ended a warming trend and started a near-glacial&nbsp;period.&nbsp;

According to the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis, a cosmic airburst triggered this cooling event when a fragmented&nbsp;comet&nbsp;crashed into the atmosphere of the Earth nearly 12,800 years ago.

<h2>Scientists find evidence of Younger Dryas airburst</h2>

In a new study, the scientists have found more evidence which supports this hypothesis.&nbsp;

They have discovered the traces of cosmic airbursts which were scattered across various sites in the eastern United States - which covers Maryland, New Jersey and South Carolina.&nbsp;

In the new evidence, they have found materials indicative of the force and temperature which were part of such an event - like platinum, microspherules, melt glass, and shock-fractured quartz.

“What we’ve found is that the pressures and temperatures were not characteristic of major crater-forming impacts but were consistent with so-called ‘touchdown’ airbursts that don’t form much in the way of craters,” said&nbsp;UC Santa Barbara&nbsp;Professor James Kennett, who headed the study.

<h2>What was the Younger Dryas period?</h2>

To the climate researchers, the Younger Dryas has great importance. It provides them with valuable insights into the rapid changes which are possible to occur in the climate system of Earth.&nbsp;

The period also illustrates the interconnectedness of our terrestrial, atmospheric and oceanic systems.

The Younger Dryas also shows the sudden return of icy atmosphere on Earth's surface which disrupts the gentle warming of the climate on Earth after the last Ice Age. It is said that this icy condition remained from 12,900 to 11,700 years ago.

This abrupt climatic change also affected the global vegetation layouts and led to the extinction of various large animal species.&nbsp;

The end of the Younger Dryas period also came as suddenly as it started as the temperatures in Greenland went up by 10°C in just ten years.&nbsp;

Comet crashed on Earth, set the planet ablaze thousands of years ago: Study

The entire southern Indian Ocean was battered by Cyclone Freddy in 2023, which created havoc and wrecked devastation in southeastern Africa, and now has been classified by the United Nations as the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record which lasted for 36 days.&nbsp;

The data regarding the storm, which made a remarkable journey in February and March last year, was studied by a panel of experts.

The United Nations' weather and climate agency finally stated that the cyclone had indeed broken the previous record.

The extreme weather evaluation committee "recognised Tropical Cyclone Freddy's duration of 36.0 days at tropical storm status or higher as the new world record for the longest tropical cyclone duration", said the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in a statement.

Therefore, Cyclone Freddy overtook Tropical Cyclone John - which had barrelled through the north Pacific Ocean in 1994 and was considered as the longest tropical storm which had a combined duration of 714 hours, or 29.75 days.

<h2>Cyclone Freddy fails to dethrone Cyclone John as longest-travelling storm</h2>

However, Cyclone Freddy failed to take away the title of the longest-travelling storm from Cyclone John, which covered a distance of 13,159 kilometres (8,176.6 miles), while Freddy only travelled 12,785 kilometres.

"Freddy was a remarkable tropical cyclone, not only for its longevity but also for its ability to survive multiple land interactions, which unfortunately had significant consequences for southeast African populations,"&nbsp;stated panel member Chris Velden, who is a tropical cyclone and satellite expert from the University of Wisconsin in the United States.

No direct link was made between&nbsp;Freddy's exceptional longevity and the human activity-led climate change by the WMO.

However, on its page which is dedicated to tropical cyclones, the WMO stated that climate change is linked "not only to an increased likelihood of major hurricanes but also to direct increases in their destructive power".

"Freddy caused major human and economic losses in the worst-affected countries due to its prolonged passage near and over land," stated the WMO.

Freddy developed across north Australia and turned into the "Cyclone Freddy" on February 6.

On February 21, the cyclone made landfall in Madagascar after crossing the island before it reached Mozambique on February 24 and led to the loss of lives and properties in both countries.
