A 1,800-year-old Roman-era ring was found by a teenager who was hiking in northern Israel. The ring had an image of a Roman goddess holding a sword and spear engraved on&nbsp;it.

The ring looks like is made of bronze and has a depiction of Minerva - who is the Roman equivalent of the Greek goddess Athena and only wears a helmet.

During the Roman period, Minerva was a popular goddess in the region and was "considered, among other things, as the goddess of war and military strategy, and also as the goddess of wisdom," said Nir Distelfeld, inspector at the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) Theft Prevention Unit, and&nbsp;Eitan Klein, of the IAA's Unit for the Prevention of Antiquities Robbery, in a&nbsp;statement.

<h2>Teen explains how he stumbled upon the ring</h2>

The 13-year-old Yair Whiteson discovered the ring when he was hiking with his father in the region of Haifa.

The father and son were crossing an ancient quarry on Mount Carmel when Yair, who has a passion for collecting interesting fossils and rocks, saw a "small green item" on the ground.

In a statement, Yair said, "It was corroded, and at first, I thought it was just a rusty bolt. I thought about heating it, but then fortunately I understood it was a ring. At home, I saw it had an image on it. At first glance, I thought it was a warrior."

Subsequently, his family reached out to the IAA who sent the artefact&nbsp;to Israel's National Treasures Department.&nbsp;

<h2>All about the Roman-era ring</h2>

According to the researchers, the small ring must have belonged to a girl or woman during the Late&nbsp;Roman&nbsp;period (second to third centuries AD).

The ring was discovered in Khirbet Shalala, which is an archaeological site on a hilltop close to the quarry which is filled with the remains of a Roman-period farmstead.

"There are two burial caves on the quarry's edge," said Distelfeld and Klein, in the statement.&nbsp;

"The ring may have belonged to a woman who lived on this farm. Or, it might have fallen from a quarry worker, or it may have been a burial offering from these nearby graves. There are many possibilities," it&nbsp;added.

Scientists have discovered a new planet with the most elongated orbit ever seen in any of the 5,600 planets spotted till now.&nbsp;

The planet stands strangely unique because it appears to be orbiting the wrong way. The planet can help scientists find the missing link between planetary formation.&nbsp;

The planet, which has been given the name TIC 241249530 b, has been seen orbiting a star which was nearly 1,100 light years from Earth.&nbsp;

It has been observed that the planet has been moving in a highly "eccentric" orbit as it circles its star in a way that it comes extremely close to the star before it slings out and then doubles back in a narrow, elliptical circuit.

The orbit of the new planet also has a unique "retrograde" orientation. Unlike other planets in the solar system, including Earth, which orbit around the Sun in the same direction, this planet orbits in the direction which is opposite to the direction in which the star is rotating. &nbsp;

<h2>Eccentric planet turning into 'hot Jupiter'</h2>

The most extreme planets in the galaxy are said to be hot Jupiters, as they are as big as Jupiter and have the characteristic of wildly swinging close to their star. Now, scientists believe that this eccentric planet is also turning into a hot Jupiter.&nbsp;

Assistant professor of physics at MIT's Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research Sarah Millholland said, "This new planet supports the theory that high eccentricity migration should account for some fraction of hot Jupiters."

"We think that when this planet formed, it would have been a frigid world. And because of the dramatic orbital dynamics, it will become a hot Jupiter in about a billion years, with temperatures of several thousand kelvin. So it's a huge shift from where it started," Millholland said, as reported by phys.org.&nbsp;

Scientists spot eccentric, backwards-orbiting planet which is turning into 'hot Jupiter'

In a major discovery, astronomers have now detected two very important gases - molecule phosphine and ammonia - in the atmosphere of Venus which have further escalated the discussion of chances of life on the planet.&nbsp;

The presence of phosphine has left scientists puzzled as it has increased the possibility of life in the clouds of the planet.&nbsp;

For scientists, the finding of phosphine in the planet's atmosphere has been revolutionary from the beginning.&nbsp;

This is because phosphine is a biosignature and its presence indicates the existence of life.&nbsp;

The presence of the phosphine molecule has been observed in several follow-up investigations. New evidence of this molecule has been presented by the team and this one has been located even deeper in the clouds of the planet, accompanied by another important gas ammonia.&nbsp;

“We haven't properly sorted out the atmospheric modelling for this yet, but there are some broad lines at the level that suggest parts per million level of phosphine at around 55, 56, 57-kilometre altitude, consistent with the pioneer Venus probe data,” said&nbsp;Dr Dave Clements, who is from Imperial College London, while speaking to IFLScience.

“There are a number of weirdnesses in Venus's atmosphere. Phosphine is just a new one that's come along," he added.&nbsp;

"Amongst the other strange things is the way that the amount of water and the amount of SO2&nbsp;in the atmosphere vary over time. It's not known why. The variations haven't been monitored to a great extent, but it's known that there are variations on time scales from at least days to years," Dr Clements said.&nbsp;

<h2>Ammonia emerges as a big discovery on Venus</h2>

Ammonia is likely to emerge as the next big discovery on Venus. It has been detected in small amounts in the clouds.&nbsp;

The presence of this gas is seen as a good biosignature since there is no significant known&nbsp;source of ammonia present in the terrestrial worlds which does not host life.&nbsp;

Speaking to IFLScience, University of Cardiff's Professor Jane Greaves said, “There are other models coming along all the time, other explanations saying ‘Oh, you could get ammonia and phosphine and all sorts of other unexpected chemicals this way unrelated to life’ so we're trying not to overstate, but yeah, it's really exciting."&nbsp;

“If there are any microbes in the Venus clouds, they might make certain gases that you wouldn't expect. And ammonia came up as they could use it as a way to neutralize the acid,” Professor Greaves said.

“We've detected it slightly above the region which we think is warm enough for life. Either it hasn’t got anything to do with life or the gas is perhaps produced by something living but it drifts upwards where it's a bit easier for us to detect," he added.

Astronomers detect two vital gases in Venus. Is this a hint of alien life?

In the hunt to find an antidote for the poisonous cobra venom, scientists at the University of Sydney and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine seem to have made a stunning discovery.&nbsp;

In the breakthrough study, the scientists discovered that the commonly used blood thinner - heparin - has the qualities to be repurposed as an inexpensive antidote for cutting down the effects of cobra venom.

Every year, thousands of people are killed by&nbsp;cobras and many others get maimed due to necrosis which happens because of the venom and can cause amputation.

The antivenom treatment currently available is expensive and has not been effective in treating the necrosis of the flesh if the snake bite occurs.&nbsp;

The study's corresponding author in the Charles Perkins Center and Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney Professor Greg Neely said, "Our discovery could drastically reduce the terrible injuries from necrosis caused by&nbsp;cobra&nbsp;bites—and it might also slow the venom, which could improve survival rates."&nbsp;

The scientists used CRISPR gene-editing technology to identify ways in which the cobra venom is blocked. The team comprised of scientists based in Australia, Canada, Costa Rica and the UK.&nbsp;

The team was able to repurpose heparin (a common blood thinner) successfully to stop the necrosis which happens by cobra bites. The research was published in the Science Translational Medicine.

The university&nbsp;PhD student and lead author Tian Du said, "Heparin is inexpensive, ubiquitous and a World Health Organisation-listed Essential Medicine. After successful human trials, it could be rolled out relatively quickly to become a cheap, safe and effective drug for treating cobra bites."

<h2>Scientists target to release antidote in next five years</h2>

Head of the Centre for Snakebite Research &amp; Interventions at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, joint corresponding author and Professor Nicholas Casewell said, "Snakebites remain the deadliest of the neglected tropical diseases, with its burden landing overwhelmingly on rural communities in low- and middle-income countries."

"Our findings are exciting because current antivenoms are largely ineffective against severe local envenoming, which involves painful progressive swelling, blistering and/or tissue necrosis around the bite site. This can lead to loss of limb function, amputation and lifelong disability," he added.

Scientists have been left stunned after they found a diverse seascape on Saturn’s moon Titan appearing eerily similar to Earth.&nbsp;

Just like freshwater rivers and salty oceans flowing on Earth, scientists have now found strange lakes, rivers and oceans flowing on Titan.&nbsp;

Unlike the water oceans present on Earth, the lakes of Titan are filled with ethane and methane which are in liquid form at the average surface temperature of the planet which is about -179°C (-290°F).

The surface and composition of Titan’s seas were mapped by Valerio Poggiali&nbsp;at Cornell University, New York and his colleagues using a different radar technique in which an increased amount of ethane was revealed.&nbsp;

Just like freshwater rivers and salty oceans flowing on Earth, scientists have now found strange lakes, rivers and oceans flowing on Titan. Unlike the water oceans present on Earth, the lakes of Titan are filled with ethane and methane which are in liquid form at the average surface temperature of the planet which is about -179°C (-290°F). The surface and composition of Titan’s seas were mapped by Valerio Poggiali at Cornell University, New York and his colleagues using a different radar technique in which an increased amount of ethane was revealed. Strange lakes, rivers and oceans are flowing on Saturn's moon. Scientists find it eerily similar to Earth

In a mysterious discovery, a giant millipede with numerous legs was again spotted in the Makira Forest of Madagascar after 126 years.&nbsp;

It was found along with 20 other species which have been lost in time including&nbsp;the ant-like flower beetles, iridescent fish and even jumping spiders.

The giant millipede, which was the long, dark-brown&nbsp;Spirostreptus sculptus, was first noted by entomologist Henri de Saussure and naturalist Leo Zehntner back in&nbsp;1897 who discovered it in Madagascar.&nbsp;

The researchers spent several weeks last year and looked into Makira Forest, which was one of Madagascar’s largest protected areas.

While speaking to IFLScience, Re:wild’s lost species officer Christina Biggs said, “Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot and Makira is an underexplored area within the country, so we decided to pilot a new model for lost species searches there."

The research group had started the mission of finding the lost species with a list of 30, however, the giant millipede&nbsp;emerged as the unexpected finding.&nbsp;

Entomologist Dmitry Telnov said, “I personally was most surprised and pleased by the fact that the giant millipede&nbsp;Spirostreptus sculptus, not uncommon in Makira Forest, appeared to be another lost species known only from the type specimen described in 1897."

He further said, “The longest specimen of this species we observed in Makira was a really gigantic female measuring 27.5 centimetres [10.8 inches] long.”

<h2>Multiple lost species rediscovered in the forest</h2>

Apart from the giant millipede, the team was also able to find various species which were lost in time. Two of these were ant-like flower beetles which had not been documented since 1958 and one was the jumping spider Tomocyrba decollate which was last seen in 1900.

During the expedition, the researchers also discovered the species of zebra spider, which was earlier not believed to be living in Madagascan rainforests.

Director of the SpiDiverse working group at BINCO Brogan Pett, after finding some adults guarding egg sacs in a cave, said, “[T]hey were quite large spiders and it was remarkable that they had gone unrecognized for so long.”

“Having a better understanding of the biological riches of Makira will enable us to better target our protection efforts," she added.

Ancient giant millipede reappears in Madagascar's forest after over 120 years. Has anything changed so far?

In a new study, researchers from the Pompeii Archaeological Park and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisicae Vulcanologia (INGV) found that the eruption of Vesuvius became more deadly because of another natural disaster and not an earthquake.

In a new study, researchers from the Pompeii Archaeological Park and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisicae Vulcanologia (INGV) found that the eruption of Vesuvius became more deadly because of another natural disaster and not an earthquake. The collaborative study has emphasised the effects of seismicity related to the 79 CE eruption. This is the first study which has been handling the complex task of understanding the effects of co-occurring earthquakes. The situation appears tricky because of the possibility of volcanic and seismic effects taking place concurrently or in quick succession, which means volcanic effects are likely to overshadow effects caused by earthquakes and vice versa. "These complexities are like a jigsaw puzzle in which all the pieces must fit together to unravel the complete picture," said Dr Domenico Sparice, who is a volcanologist at INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano and first author of the Frontiers in Earth Science study. "We proved that seismicity during the eruption played a significant role in the destruction of Pompeii and, possibly, influenced the choices of the Pompeiians who faced an inevitable death," he said. Also Read: Ancient Herculaneum beach buried by Mount Vesuvius 2,000 years ago reopened after extensive restoration "Correctly recognising the cause-effect relationship is essential to reconstruct the interplay between volcanic and seismic phenomena, and their effects on buildings and humans," said co-author Dr. Fabrizio Galadini, who is a geologist and senior researcher at INGV. Two skeletons speak about how Pompeii crumbled The researchers, amid excavations in the "Casa dei Pittori al Lavoro", noticed that something was wrong regarding the collapsed buildings. "We found peculiar characteristics that were inconsistent with the effects of volcanic phenomena described in the volcanological literature devoted to Pompeii. There had to be a different explanation," co-author Dr. Mauro Di Vito, who is a volcanologist and director of INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano said. The researchers discovered two skeletons with trauma injuries and severe fractures and decided to find out what was the reason behind it. Small rock and ash particles had rained on the city for 18 hours and when the eruption started, the inhabitants who had survived were likely to have believed that they were safe in their shelter till strong earthquakes started. Watch: Scientists find underground caves on moon "The people who did not flee their shelters were possibly overwhelmed by earthquake-induced collapses of already overburdened buildings. This was the fate of the two individuals we recovered," said co-author Dr. Valeria Amoretti, an anthropologist who heads the Applied Research Laboratory of Pompeii Archaeological Park. "New insight into the destruction of Pompeii gets us very close to the experience of the people who lived here 2,000 years ago. The choices they made as well as the dynamics of the events, which remain a focus of our research, decided over life and death in the last hours of the city's existence," concluded co-author Dr. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park. Kings and monarchs have been known for committing atrocities, killing people and being ruthless in nature.&nbsp;

However, Russia's first tsar - Ivan the Terrible - has etched another kind of arc in history where he has been found to be the cruellest tyrant to have existed on Earth 440 years ago.&nbsp;

However, the true face of the tsar was lost in history and now his face has been reconstructed to understand how he actually looked.&nbsp;

In 1963, the grave of the tsar was excavated by Soviet scientist Mikhail Gerasimov.

The work's lead author Cicero Moraes said, "According to Dr Gerasimov's study, it appears that Ivan indulged in a disorderly life of excessive eating and alcohol abuse."

"This must have worsened his condition in his last years. This is in contrast to the appearance he had when younger, when he was described as tall, with beautiful hair, broad shoulders, strong muscles, and a pleasant face," he added.

"An interesting fact is that they found a large amount of mercury in his body, which made some suspect poisoning. But given the habits of the time, it may have been used as a treatment for some health problem," Moraes further added.

<h2>How the face was reconstructed?</h2>

Several approaches were combined to reconstruct the final face. In one method, data from living donors was used to understand the likely thickness of the skin of the tsar on his skull.&nbsp;

Another technique put to work was anatomical deformation, in which a living donor's face and skull were digitally altered till they matched the dimensions of Ivan the Terrible.

Just 10 minutes before United States former president Donald Trump climbed over the stage and eventually got bruised in an assassination attempt, the Secret Service had received a warning against shooter Thomas Michael Crooks and had designated him as a "threat".

The agency had also received a warning regarding a “character of suspicion” being present on the ground more than an hour before the deadly shooting which took place on Saturday (July 13) at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, according to the New York Post.

According to The Post, Crooks was not holding a gun in his hand when the warning was issued against him.

The UFO investigators have claimed that they possess an unidentified material which has been proved to have a 'non-human' origin in the tests.&nbsp;

The sample's tiny scraps, which were gold-tinged and lighter than a flower petal - were displayed for the first time at a conference this week in Irving,&nbsp;Texas.&nbsp;

MUFON is the group of UFO investigators which possesses the material. It said that the sample was tested with NASA-grade technology and 90 per cent of the material was unidentifiable, according to a report published in Daily Mail.&nbsp;

This hinted that the material was not a metal which is known to humankind, said the researchers.&nbsp;

Because it has a unique light and porous texture, MUFON floated the idea that the sample had a resemblance with the 'debris from a craft'.&nbsp;

The Russian researcher had earlier said that the sample was likely to be the remnants of a crashed UFO.

Questioning the discovery,&nbsp;independent UFO experts said that this is the latest sample which carries the possibility of having an "alien&nbsp;origin".

The group further said that some samples were stolen from the official Post Office Box of the United States after the Russian finder of the sample tried to send them to MUFON in the United States.&nbsp;

"This is typical with evidence of this nature," said MUFON Media Relations Director Ron James.&nbsp;

"We believe that this material was deliberately taken by someone who could hack into a locked Post Office Box to prevent further testing.'&nbsp;

'Who did it is anybody's guess," James added.

MUFON researcher Bob Spearing informed symposium attendees that Russian researcher Arkady had approached him after testing the material using an X-Ray fluorescence gun in Russian geological labs.&nbsp;

The handheld tech, which has similarity to hardware on NASA's Mars Perseverance rover, discovered that 90 per cent of the material was unidentifiable, stated Spearing.

"It's very, very light material. It almost looks porous, like it has pores. It has a tinge of gold in it, but it's basically a black material. Seems to be some sort of composite," Spearing said. "It's so light that it won't even bend a flower," he added.&nbsp;

The UFO investigators have claimed that they possess an unidentified material which has been proved to have a 'non-human' origin in the tests. The sample's tiny scraps, which were gold-tinged and lighter than a flower petal - were displayed for the first time at a conference this week in Irving, Texas. MUFON is the group of UFO investigators which possesses the material. It said that the sample was tested with NASA-grade technology and 90 per cent of the material was unidentifiable, according to a report published in Daily Mail. This hinted that the material was not a metal which is known to humankind, said the researchers. Also Read: Watch: Green-coloured UFO spotted flying over Iran. TikTokers share video, ask 'aliens headed to Earth?' Because it has a unique light and porous texture, MUFON floated the idea that the sample had a resemblance with the 'debris from a craft'. The Russian researcher had earlier said that the sample was likely to be the remnants of a crashed UFO. Questioning the discovery, independent UFO experts said that this is the latest sample which carries the possibility of having an "alien origin". Some samples of UFO debris stone: Investigators The group further said that some samples were stolen from the official Post Office Box of the United States after the Russian finder of the sample tried to send them to MUFON in the United States. "This is typical with evidence of this nature," said MUFON Media Relations Director Ron James. "We believe that this material was deliberately taken by someone who could hack into a locked Post Office Box to prevent further testing.' 'Who did it is anybody's guess," James added. The handheld tech, which has similarity to hardware on NASA's Mars Perseverance rover, discovered that 90 per cent of the material was unidentifiable, stated Spearing. "It's very, very light material. It almost looks porous, like it has pores. It has a tinge of gold in it, but it's basically a black material. Seems to be some sort of composite," Spearing said. "It's so light that it won't even bend a flower," he added. (With inputs from agencies)
