<p>The way in which humans hunted big animals in the Ice Age has always been a topic of debate and interest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was believed till now that carefully sharpened spears were thrown at animals by humans to hunt them down and feast on them.</p>

<p>However, archaeologists at UC Berkeley have now suggested that perhaps the pointed spears were planted in the ground with the sharp point of the weapon angled upwards in a way that a charging animal's body would be impaled by it.</p>

<p>This way the spear would have gone deeper into the body of the predator and caused more damage.</p>

<p>A team of Berkeley archaeologists looked into various sources of writings and artwork and even reviewed historical evidence related to people hunting with planted spears.</p>

<p>The scientists also carried out the first experimental study of stone weapons which emphasised pike-hunting techniques while revealing how spears react to the simulated force of an animal.</p>

<p>As per the researchers, once the sharpened rock pierced into the flesh and started its engineered mounting system, the spear tip worked like a modern-day hollow-point bullet and caused serious wounds to the animals.</p>

<p>"This ancient Native American design was an amazing innovation in hunting strategies," said Scott Byram, who is the first author of&nbsp;a paper&nbsp;on the topic published in the journal&nbsp;PLOS ONE.</p>

<p>"This distinctive Indigenous technology is providing a window into hunting and survival techniques used for millennia throughout much of the world," he added.</p>

<p>"You have to look beyond the simple artefact. One of the things that's key here is that we're looking at this as an engineered system that requires multiple kinds of sub-specialities within our field and other fields," Byram stated.</p>

<h2><strong>How did scientists measure the force of the spear system?</strong></h2>

<p>To understand the pike hypothesis, the team of researchers formed a test platform to measure how much force a spear system can withstand before the point gets snapped and the shaft is expanded.&nbsp;</p>

The way in which humans hunted big animals in the Ice Age has always been a topic of debate and interest. It was believed till now that carefully sharpened spears were thrown at animals by humans to hunt them down and feast on them. However, archaeologists at UC Berkeley have now suggested that perhaps the pointed spears were planted in the ground with the sharp point of the weapon angled upwards in a way that a charging animal's body would be impaled by it. This way the spear would have gone deeper into the body of the predator and caused more damage. A team of Berkeley archaeologists looked into various sources of writings and artwork and even reviewed historical evidence related to people hunting with planted spears. The scientists also carried out the first experimental study of stone weapons which emphasised pike-hunting techniques while revealing how spears react to the simulated force of an animal. Also Read: Scientists find rare rock art in caves of Amazon telling different tale of humans and animals As per the researchers, once the sharpened rock pierced into the flesh and started its engineered mounting system, the spear tip worked like a modern-day hollow-point bullet and caused serious wounds to the animals. "This ancient Native American design was an amazing innovation in hunting strategies," said Scott Byram, who is the first author of a paper on the topic published in the journal PLOS ONE. "This distinctive Indigenous technology is providing a window into hunting and survival techniques used for millennia throughout much of the world," he added. "You have to look beyond the simple artefact. One of the things that's key here is that we're looking at this as an engineered system that requires multiple kinds of sub-specialities within our field and other fields," Byram stated. How did scientists measure the force of the spear system? To understand the pike hypothesis, the team of researchers formed a test platform to measure how much force a spear system can withstand before the point gets snapped and the shaft is expanded. Antarctica is rising from ocean and losing weight. Here's how it will impact Earth

<p>Scientists have now figured out that 95 per cent of water present on any exoplanet may be trapped deep inside the planet's iron core, making it more potentially habitable.</p>

<p>"It is only in recent years that we have begun to realize that planets are more complex than we had thought. Planets&nbsp;are much more water-abundant than previously assumed," said Caroline Dorn, professor of&nbsp;exoplanets&nbsp;at ETH Zurich in Switzerland, in a&nbsp;statement.</p>

<p>Initially, they are made of hot worlds of oceans of molten magma which have not yet cooled. After cooling, they form a solid mantle of silicate bedrock.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In such magma oceans, water dissolves easily, unlike carbon dioxide, which outgasses and rises in the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Explaining the results of the study, Dorn said, "The iron core takes time to develop. A large share of the iron is initially contained in the hot magma soup in the form of droplets."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The water then combines with the iron droplets and carries them to the core. "The iron droplets behave like a lift that is conveyed downward by the water," Dorn said.</p>

<p>"This is one of the key results of our study. The larger the planet and the greater its mass, the more the water tends to go with the iron droplets and become integrated into the core. Under certain circumstances, iron can absorb up to 70 times more water than silicates. However, owing to the enormous pressure at the core, the water no longer takes the form of H2O molecules but is present in hydrogen and oxygen," Dorn said.</p>

<p>NASA is on alert as massive 110-feet asteroid 2020 RL is about to make its close approach to Earth on August 27.</p>

A video went viral from the Independence Day celebrations held in the Mungeli district of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, where a pigeon was released by the superintendent of police (SP) in the air, but it failed to fly and instead dropped on the ground. The video of the incident went viral because of its uncanny resemblance with a famous scene from the third season of the television series ‘Panchayat' in which a pigeon released by the local MLA suddenly drops dead, causing an uproar.
