Taiwan’s government has been planning to restrict pain relief medications’ bulk buying as people have started stocking up, some even trying to ship their bulk purchases to China, where the worsening situation of Covid-19 has dried up the medical supplies.

Taiwan’s Minister of Health and Welfare Hsueh Jui-yuan, while speaking to the lawmakers on Thursday at a legislative committee hearing, said that firstly the pharmacies will be instructed by the health agency to advise customers against stocking up on Panadol and related drugs.

Hsueh said that a discussion would be held by the health authorities regarding imposing restrictions if needed later, however, they have no such concrete plan in place as of now, reported the official news agency Focus Taiwan.

Taiwan has been facing a shortage of Covid-related medicine and fever reducer paracetamol since May when there was a surge in local cases, reported by several pharmacies in Taipei. One of the pharmacies said that, in the past weeks, customers have been stocking up on medicine amid the fear of surging Covid cases after Taiwan’s borders were re-opened for tourists in October.

“We ran out of stock for Panadol fairly quickly and we don’t expect restocking any time soon until probably after the lunar new year, which falls in late January next year,” one of the employees working at a pharmacy in Taipei’s Da’an district said.

Few drug buyers in Taiwan are planning to ship the painkiller to China which is witnessing a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases and related deaths after the country’s zero-Covid restrictions were relaxed.

The government of Ethiopia and rebels in Tigray, the country's northernmost regional state, have mutually decided to form a monitoring body to terminate the country's brutal war. Both forces declared a truce in November that ceased violence in the northern Tigray region. However, tens of thousands have already died in the last two years of rivalry.

The agreement terms have a provision to create a compliance mechanism that addresses any violation. Ethiopia's military commanders and Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) finalised the accord at Kenya's capital Nairobi on Thursday, Barron's reported.

The joint committee would consist of a representative from each side, a delegate from IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) and the African Union (AU). The committee's prime focus is to find a peace deal and ensure that both sides respect the provisions. Furthermore, the committee would ensure that both forces stay faithful to TPLP's disarming.

Amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Russian paramilitary forces are summoning cryptocurrency donations to buy weaponry, armour, and drones warned Australian intelligence agency Austrac. Officials at the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre referred to cryptocurrency as a ‘standard part of money laundering tool kit’.

John Moss, the agency’s head executive and head of intelligence, claimed that cryptocurrency has become mainstream, The Guardian reported. "It is no more a niche option for criminal activity," he said.

As Moss expressed his concern over the donations made by Australians to terrorist groups, he mentioned that conventional money laundering methods have shifted to digital currency. The prime reason behind the switch is to send money offshore.

Earlier in 2022, UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) shut down all the bitcoin ATMs. However, unlike the UK, Australia has a rapidly growing number of regulated crypto ATMs. Moss raised concerns over their illegal usage and the increase in the number of fraud cases.

The finance agency has regulated crypto-exchange providers for money laundering and counter-terrorism financing objectives. However, Tink claims that the case is not the same everywhere. "It is not difficult to cash out crypto-currencies and fly under the radar in parts of Eastern Europe," said Tink.

A UK couple, who was fighting cancer and going through chemotherapy in the pregnancy days, gave birth to a ‘miracle baby’. The doctors had diagnosed James Jefferson-Loveday with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2021, months before his wife Bethany was found suffering from cancer, when she was 21 weeks pregnant.

It was the husband’s cancer diagnosis which made the couple try for a baby. After receiving the treatment, the couple gave birth to a healthy baby Heidi, who is being called a “miracle baby”.

Dr Salim Shafeek, from whom the couple received treatment, said, “The combination of being pregnant and having high-grade Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is exceptionally rare, and Bethany is the first case of this I've treated in my 25 years as a Consultant Haematologist."

The hospital trust said that she discussed all treatment options with Worcestershire Royal Hospital’s consultant obstetrician before going through six cycles of chemotherapy. Dr Shafeek stated that they were not able to delay the process of chemotherapy or use stronger treatment which had to end in 35 weeks so that she is given enough time to recover from childbirth.

The Russian government on Thursday stated that the Patriot missile systems which will be supplied to Ukraine by the United States, as announced during a visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Washington on Wednesday, will not contribute to settling the war between Kyiv and Moscow, and won't stop Russia from achieving its targets.

While speaking to the reporters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that there was no sign of willingness to initiate peace talks during the visit of Zelensky and it is evident that the United States is engaged in a proxy war with Russia “to the last Ukrainian”, and that Zelensky and US President Joe Biden are unwilling to hear “Russia’s concerns”.

“We can say with regret that so far neither President (Joe) Biden nor President Zelensky has said even a few words that could be perceived as potential readiness to listen to Russia’s concerns,” Peskov said.

“Not a single word was heard warning Zelensky against the continued shelling of residential buildings in towns and villages in Donbas and there were no real calls for peace. This suggests that the United States is continuing its line of de facto fighting an indirect war with Russia to the last Ukrainian,” he further stated.

Hours before the visit of Zelensky to the US, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that next year Moscow will continue developing the country's military potential and the nuclear forces' combat readiness. Zelensky’s US visit was his first international trip since Ukraine was invaded by Russia on February 24.

It was only last month that Chinese police detained and beat BBC journalist Edward Lawrence during anti-lockdown protests, attracting condemnation.

Speaking about the events, the BBC said that it was “extremely concerned”. Meanwhile, the UK’s foreign secretary termed it as “deeply disturbing”. The co-journalists working with Lawrence tweeted about how press freedoms are being trampled by an authoritarian regime.

In a report published by the Deadline, it was stated that among those raising their voice was BBC commercial enclave's senior vice-president Richard Pattinson.

Although he wrote about the news on Twitter, what he failed to share was about the commercial unit he runs known as “BBC StoryWorks” and how it shares years of relation with China and how it is making dollars by producing advertisements for China, the report said.

According to the report, BBC StoryWorks has entered into a partnership with 18 Chinese companies since 2015, which includes nine state-affiliated bodies.

It further alleged BBC StoryWorks of producing Chinese government-owned media outlets' tourism campaigns, which includes entering into a partnership with China Global Television Network (CGTN) after a ban was imposed on its broadcasting in the UK.

The report suggests that StoryWorks is Huawei's loyal partner although the UK and US authorities had sanctioned the firm amid fears of national security. Meanwhile, failed appeals have been made by senior BBC journalists to sever ties of StoryWorks with China.

People closely working with the BBC newsroom have expressed their anxiety at the corporation's business ties with China's state media, who have attacked Britain's journalists. Concerns have also been raised over the chances of BBC facing accusations of conflict of interest in its news reporting on China.

The BBC claims that StoryWorks is “entirely separate” from the channel's newsgathering operations and that journalists freely report about China “without fear or favour” of any contracts with China's state media.

“Hosting advertising outside of the UK allows us to generate income to invest in the BBC, including in our world-class, independent and impartial journalism. In a historic move, lawmakers in Spain passed a transgender rights bill on Thursday permitting people above the age of 16 to change the gender on their ID card, legislation which has left the feminist movement and left-wing government of Spain divided.

The bill which received 188 votes in favour and 150 against as well as seven abstentions, will now go to the Senate, where if it remains unchanged, it will take the form of a law in weeks.

With this move, Spain will become one of the few countries in the world that permits transgender citizens to change their gender on the ID card with a simple declaration.

After the request is submitted, the applicant needs to confirm the request three months later, after which it becomes valid.

However, the draft bill's text has ensued a bitter quarrel between LGBTQ equality campaigners and activists in the powerful feminist lobby of Spain.

The legislation regarding transgender rights is among the Podemos-held equality ministry's flagship projects. Podemos is Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's Socialist-led coalition's radical left-wing junior partner.

The panel investigating the historic US Capitol riot will be voting on whether criminal charges should be pressed against former US president Donald Trump at their final public meeting to be held on Monday.

The final decision taken after voting will end the House of Representatives select committee’s 18-month investigation in which more than 1,000 witnesses were interviewed and explosive public hearings were held on the assault carried out at the US Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

Around five people had lost their lives after a mob, influenced by Trump's false claims of a rigged election and asked to storm into the Congress by the lost president, ransacked the US Capitol in a failed bid to stop President Joe Biden from taking up the power.

It is expected that the Justice Department will be urged by the committee to carry on Trump’s trial on at least three charges of violence which are obstructing an official work, conspiring to defraud the country and fuelling an insurrection.

The referrals made will be symbolic as the Justice Department holds control over charging decisions. Independent special prosecutor Jack Smith, who has been appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, is carrying out his own investigation into the 2020 election and the role played by Trump in the Capitol riot.

However, the move of lawmakers would be historic as no criminal referral has ever been made by Congress against a former or current president. The decision would be a major blow to Trump in the wake of his recent announcement of making a presidential bid to come back to the White House.

Democratic committee member Adam Schiff said, "I think that the evidence is there that Donald Trump committed criminal offenses in connection with his efforts to overturn the election.”
