The parent company of Facebook, Meta, has "breached EU antitrust rules" in the social network’s online classified section, stated the European Commission (EC) in its preliminary finding released on Monday.

"The Commission takes issue with Meta tying its online classified ads service, Facebook Marketplace, to its personal social network, Facebook," said the EC in its statement. "The Commission is also concerned that Meta is imposing unfair trading conditions on Facebook Marketplace's competitors for its own benefit,” it added.

In the past, the EC has faced several run-ins with tech companies, including Meta, over the company’s practices.

This year, the company’s policy arsenal was beefed up with EU legislation’s two new pieces, the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act, that include huge financial penalties in case of infringement.

The acts will be brought into full force throughout 2023 and 2024. The announcement made by the EU on Monday was about Meta’s "suspected violations" of antitrust rules laid out by the EU and provides Meta with a chance to respond to the formal Statement of Objections of the commission.

The concerns raised emphasise on the way Facebook users are given automatic access by Meta to Facebook Marketplace "whether they want it or not".

The commission added that Facebook Marketplace competitors may face unfair disadvantages due to the link. It also raised concerns over unfair trading practices involved in Instagram and Facebook’s online classified ad services, which fall under the umbrella of Meta.

The commission said that user terms mentioned on those platforms allow Meta to use competitors’ ads-related data for boosting Facebook Marketplace.

If the concerns raised by the EU are proven right and evidence of infringement is found, Meta may have to 10% of its global annual turnover as a fine.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte issued an official apology on Monday for Netherlands' historical involvement in slavery for 250 years, as he said that it was a crime committed against humanity and acknowledged the continued consequences of slavery in the present day.

In his nationally broadcasted speech, Rutte said, “Today I apologise. For centuries the Dutch state and its representatives have enabled and stimulated slavery and have profited from it.”

"It is true that nobody alive today bears any personal guilt for slavery...(however) the Dutch state bears responsibility for the immense suffering that has been done to those that were enslaved and their descendants,” he added.

Rutte made the official apology amid growing reconsideration of the Netherlands’ colonial past, which includes steps taken to return the looted wealth and the current struggle of the country with racism.

The prime minister’s apology in The Hague faced resistance from groups who argued that King Willem-Alexander should have issued an apology on July 1, 2023, in former colony Suriname to mark Dutch abolition’s 160th anniversary. Dutch Afro-Surinamese organisation Honour and Recovery Foundation’s Roy Kaikusi Groenberg said, "It takes two to tango - apologies have to be received.”

He added that it was wrong to not sufficiently consult activists who have worked for years to change the wave of discussion in the country. "The way the government is handling this, it's coming across as a neo-colonial belch," Groenberg said.

PM Rutte accepted that the announcement was clumsily handled and added that representatives are being sent by the Dutch government to Suriname along with the Caribbean islands that are part of the Netherlands with different degrees of autonomy - Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, Curacao, Saba, Aruba and Bonaire.

Sint Maarten’s Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs said that no apology would be accepted by them without any discussion. Rutte issued the apology in his response to a national advisory panel which was established after the 2020 killing of George Floyd in the US.

The panel stated that the participation of the Dutch in slavery led to crimes against humanity and gave a recommendation for an apology as well as reparations in 2021. Rutte said that the panel’s conclusions are embraced by the government, including that slavery was a crime against humanity.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday won the confidence vote in parliament as he successfully cemented his mandate one month after the election’s inconclusive result forced him to join hands with his former political opponents’ corruption-tainted party.

Speaker of the parliament’s lower house Johari Abdul said that the support was affirmed via voice vote on Monday, with members favouring the leadership of Anwar drowning out the opposition.

Anwar said that, in the 222-seat legislature, he had 148 members’ support which gives him a majority of two-thirds required to pass reforms after the general elections that took place on November 19. Anwar’s close ally Johari received 148 votes as he got elected for the speaker’s post on Monday.

According to analysts, the government’s strong majority should help Malaysia gain political stability, after years of unstable governance and four changes in leadership.

In the elections, the Pakatan Harapan (Alliance of Hope) coalition of PM Anwar Ibrahim clinched victory over 82 seats, leading ahead of the rivals but fell short of the required majority for the formation of the government.

The results created a situation of political stalemate, as the rival party headed by former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin claimed that they have received support from the majority, which led to the intervention of Malaysia's king.

United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will be authorising Office of Communications also known as Ofcom, which is the broadcasting watchdog of the country, to regulate Netflix in the wake of recently aired Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s controversial documentary, as per the report published in The Telegraph.

The ministers have been planning to pass a new law that would place all new streaming platforms in Ofcom’s jurisdiction and authorise it to penalise these OTTs up to £250,000 ($3,04,785).

As per the report, the law will also allow viewers to file a complaint against shows aired on Amazon Prime, Netflix and other OTTs with the Ofcom and ensure that the streaming platforms are investigated for violation of the new code of conduct.

Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan is planning to introduce the Government's Media Bill next year to give Ofcom a legal ground for regulating streaming platforms which do not have their base in the UK like Apple TV+ and Netflix.

"The watchdog will be charged with drawing up a new "Video-on-demand Code" that is expected to be similar to the rules laid down for the BBC and other terrestrial broadcasters. It will also be handed new enforcement powers that are likely to mirror those it holds to rap broadcasters for breaches of the code - which include fines of up to 250,000 pounds and orders to comply," the report stated.

The UK government’s plan to introduce the law comes after Netflix’s six-part documentary series 'Harry & Meghan’ which was aired in the last two weeks received criticising for presenting misleading facts.

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Chief William Burns said that concerns raised by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the use of nuclear weapons have impacted the Russians. “I think it has also been very useful that Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi in India have also raised their concerns about the use of nuclear weapons as well. I think that’s also having an impact on the Russians,” said Burns, while speaking to PBS.

In the interview, Burns said that there is no clear evidence present with him today of how Russia plans to make tactical use of nuclear weapons.

As per Burns, the sabre-rattling of Russian President Vladimir Putin is only aimed at intimidating others. Putin had earlier acknowledged that the Ukraine conflict is going to continue for a while. He had also issued a warning regarding the deepening threat of a nuclear war breakout.

While addressing a meeting of Russia’s Human Rights Council at the Kremlin, Putin said that Russia will fight using “all available means at their disposal”. He stated that is a special military operation.

“With regard to the protracted nature of the special military operation and its results, of course, it’s going to take a while, perhaps,” Putin said, as per a CNN report.

CNN further reported that Putin, without ruling out the possibility of initiating a nuclear war, said that the Russian nuclear arsenal looks more like a deterrent and not a provocation.

The Russian president said that they have a strategy and that they launch a strike in response to actions. He added that nation believes in using nuclear weapons for defence purposes, which they call a retaliatory strike. “That is, when we are struck, we strike in response,” Putin said.

The statement added that the minister "spoke with troops on the frontline" and at a "command post". The minister's visit comes at a time when UK defence officials claimed that low morale has become a "significant vulnerability across much of the Russian force".

The UK stated that the musicians' brigade, which is to be deployed soon after a campaign took place appealing to people to donate musical instruments to army troops, is similar to how "military music and organised entertainment" was historically used to boost the army's morale.

Anti-abortion US priest Frank Pavone was defrocked by the Vatican for his “blasphemous communications on social media” and his “persistent disobedience” towards his bishop.

The investigation over Pavone was carried out by the then-diocese of Amarillo, Texas after he posted a video on social media in 2016 in which he was seen placing an aborted fetus on an altar.

An eery quietness prevailed in the major cities of China on Sunday as people locked themselves in their homes in the wake of the burgeoning number of COVID-19 cases across the country. Currently, China is battling the first of the three predicted waves of Covid cases this winter season, as per the chief epidemiologist of the country Wu Zunyou. There is a high chance of cases multiplying in China if citizens continue returning to their homes in a mass transit movement to attend the Lunar New Year holiday to be held next month.

Still silence, no deaths reported

In the wake of surging Covid-19 cases, hearses carrying coffins were seen queued in the designated COVID-19 crematorium's driveway in Beijing on Saturday, as workers in the funeral parlours of the city appeared busier than usual, days after the zero-Covid tolerance policy was reversed by China.

Services from delivery of parcels to catering have been hit recently after the Omicron variant, which is highly transmissible, spread across Beijing. Funeral crematoriums and homes are finding it difficult to manage the increasing demand as more drivers and workers are contracting the virus.

Officially, China has not yet reported any death due to Covid since December 7 when the government abruptly pulled back its zero-Covid tolerance policy after it faced unprecedented protests from the people against the strict protocol.

Mass testing for coronavirus has ended as part of easing curbs imposed under the zero-Covid policy, raising doubt over whether the number of cases reported officially can present the intensity of the outbreak. On December 17, around 2,097 new symptomatic infections of Covid were reported by China.

Empty subways were seen in the photos uploaded of the city of Xian on social media, as people complained of facing delays in receiving their deliveries.

Dark days ahead

Authorities in Shanghai said that schools need to schedule online classes from Monday and that schools in Hangzhou have been asked to wrap up the winter semester early.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday in Beijing, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention's chief epidemiologist Wu, as per the state media report of his speech, said that there would be a peak in the current coronavirus outbreak this winter and it will have three waves in three months.

The first wave would last from mid-December to mid-January and would mainly hit cities. The second wave would begin in late January and will continue till mid-February next year, as people would continue to travel before the week-long New Year holiday.

Starting on January 21, Lunar New Year will be celebrated in China. Normally, millions of citizens travel to their homes during holidays.

Wu said that the third wave will come when people will return from their holiday between late February to mid-March.

According to a US-based research institute, the country can witness an explosion of Covid cases this week, which can lead to the death of a million people due to Covid in China in 2023.

Still silence, no deaths reported In the wake of surging Covid-19 cases, hearses carrying coffins were seen queued in the designated COVID-19 crematorium's driveway in Beijing on Saturday, as workers in the funeral parlours of the city appeared busier than usual, days after the zero-Covid tolerance policy was reversed by China. Services from delivery of parcels to catering have been hit recently after the Omicron variant, which is highly transmissible, spread across Beijing. Funeral crematoriums and homes are finding it difficult to manage the increasing demand as more drivers and workers are contracting the virus. Dark days ahead Authorities in Shanghai said that schools need to schedule online classes from Monday and that schools in Hangzhou have been asked to wrap up the winter semester early. The education bureau has directed that students attending online classes along with the pre-schoolers should not plan to return to school in Guangzhou. China’s major cities battle surge in Covid cases, hearses queue up outside crematoriums

Condemning Belgium's corruption investigation as well as the suspension imposed on its access to the parliament of the European Union (EU), Qatar said that this could leave a “negative” impact on its relations and disturb natural gas supplies.

A Qatari diplomat issued a statement in which it called out Belgian authorities for their criticism and stated that the officials have used "inaccurate" information.

Greek MEP Eva Kaili is among the six people who have been arrested after raids discovered cash amounting to €1.5 million ($1.6 million). According to the report, the cash recovered was related to a Gulf state, and last week Qatar's access to the EU parliament was suspended by the latter.

"The decision to impose such a discriminatory restriction that limits dialogue and co-operation on Qatar before the legal process has ended, will negatively effect regional and global security co-operation, as well as ongoing discussions around global energy poverty and security," the diplomat stated.

"We firmly reject the allegations associating our government with misconduct. Qatar was not the only party named in the investigation, yet our country has been exclusively criticised and attacked,” the statement read

"We have observed this week's selective condemnation of our country with great alarm," it added.

Belgian prosecutors said that investigation of corruption involving the EU parliament is being carried out by them for more than a year before arrests and raids took place in the last 10 days.

"It is deeply disappointing that the Belgian government made no effort to engage with our government to establish the facts once they became aware of the allegations," the diplomat stated.

The statement also emphasised Qatar and Belgium's "close" relationship.

"Our nations co-operated during the Covid-19 pandemic and Qatar is an important supplier of LNG to Belgium. The decision to exclusively ban representatives from a single nation at the EU Parliament demonstrates that MEPs have been significantly misled," it read.

"It is unfortunate that some acted on preconceived prejudices against Qatar and made their judgements based on the inaccurate information in the leaks rather than waiting for the investigation to conclude,” the statement added.

"Qatar has strong and longstanding ties with many countries in the European Union, and we extend our gratitude to those who have demonstrated their commitment to these relationships during this current wave of attacks against our country," the diplomat stated.
