The discovery of a giant fossil skull of an elephant in India's Kashmir Valley has left the scientists puzzled.

The elephant skull was found buried along with 87 stone tools which were used by prehistoric humans and other materials which were excavated under Dr Ghulam Bhat at the University of Jammu.

The skull was studied by an international team of scientists from the Florida Museum of Natural History, the British Museum, the University of York, and the Natural History Museum (London), along with the University of Helsinki's Dr. Steven Zhang to find out the age and evolutionary context of this megaherbivore. The paper was published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

"From the general shape of the skull, it's quite apparent that the elephant belonged to Palaeoloxodon, or straight-tusked elephants, among the largest land mammals that ever lived. Full-grown adults easily stood around 4m tall at the shoulder and weighed 9–10 tonnes," said Zhang, who is a palaeontologist from the University's Department of Geosciences and Geography.

"Yet what's puzzled experts for some time is that the Kashmir skull lacks a thickened, forward-projecting crest at the skull roof which typifies other Palaeoloxodon skulls found in India," he added.

Here's what recent research found in the skull

In recent research, it was found that the skull crest in these elephants turned more prominent with sexual and developmental maturity.

"From the size, the wisdom teeth and a few other telltale features of the skull, it is evident that the animal was a majestic bull elephant in the prime of its life, but the lack of a well-developed skull crest, particularly in comparison with other mature male skulls from Europe and from India, tells us we have a different species on our hands here," Zhang said.

According to the research team, the features of the Kashmiri skull matched another obscure skull from Turkmenistan which belonged to a distinct species called Palaeoloxodon turkmenicus.

"What's always been puzzling about the Turkmen skull is that, besides the lack of a prominent crest at the skull roof, its other features are highly similar to the already well-known European species, P. antiquus. And this led a number of experts to suggest that the Turkmen specimen is simply an aberrant individual of the European species," Zhang stated

"But with the Kashmir skull added to the mix, it becomes clear now that the two specimens can be theorized to represent a distinct species that we previously knew very little about, with a broad distribution from Central Asia to the northern Indian Subcontinent," explained Dr Advait Jukar, the lead author of the study.

After measuring protein decomposition in the Kashmir Palaeoloxodon skull's tooth enamel and observing the stone tools found alongside, the team suggested that the skull belonged to a species distinct from other Eurasian Palaeoloxodon, which might be Palaeoloxodon turkmenicus.

An office worker has secured for himself compensation after she complained that her recruitment boss did not say hello to her which breached employment laws.

A Leeds employment tribunal heard the case of Andrew Gilchrist, who faced the allegation of refusing to greet Nadine Hanson three times after she came to work.

As per reports, Gilchrist was angry at Hanson because she was late, however, he was unaware that she had a medical appointment.

The 62-year-old also gave her two colleagues a pay rise within an hour after confronting her.

The recruiting boss also pushed her phone when the employee tried to explain that she had an appointment.

Hanson suffered from anxiety due to Gilchrist's behaviour and eventually quit. She then sued his company for unfair dismissal.

The shortest flight is operated by Loganair and flies between the Orkney islands of Westray and Papa Westray in Scotland.

At times, the flying duration between Westray and Papa Westray is less than a minute which makes it the shortest flight. On this route, the fastest recorded flight was around 53 seconds and this was achieved by pilot Stuart Linklater.

This is the first time the famed auction house Sotheby’s will sell a painting created by a humanoid robot and it is likely to fetch a whopping $180,000.

The robot, whose name is Ai-Da, made a painting of renowned computer scientist and mathematician Alan Turing entitled “AI God” using its hydraulically powered hands.

Scientists have fitted cameras in the eyes of the robot Ai-Da and have also fed an internal language into the model, which is powered by artificial intelligence.

This internal language helps the robot to communicate with people and compose poems.

“Through my artwork of Alan Turing, I commemorate his achievements and contributions to the development of computing and AI,” stated Ai-Da, while speaking about her more than 7-foot-tall painting to SWNS.

“Ai-Da’s portrait joins a selection of cutting-edge works that — in their individual ways — push the boundaries of artistic creation today,” said Michael Bouhanna, Sotheby’s head of NFT & digital art, in a statement to The New York Post.

In a new study, an alarming claim has been made about microplastics being present in the lungs, hearts, and brains of newborns.

In a new study carried out by researchers from Rutgers University, it was observed that after newborn mice were exposed to polyamide-12, or PA-12 through inhalation. After this tiny plastic pieces were found inside their lungs, hearts, livers, kidneys, and brains.

In the research, it was seen that microplastics can pass through the placenta during pregnancy and can even expose the developing fetus.

Scientists did not rule out the possibility of fragments passing through the mother's milk after the child's birth, however, the presence of microplastics at such an early stage of life was alarming.

"Nobody wants plastic in their liver," said Phoebe Stapleton, who is an associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Rutgers University. "Now that we know it's there – as well as in other organs – the next step is to understand why and what that means," she added.

Microplastic pollutants have already been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, however, researchers are now worried about the long-term implications of this MNP exposure.

As per the report, exposure to pollutants and chemicals at an early stage of life will increase the risk of health problems and chronic illnesses.

"These results raise concerns for the toxicological impacts associated with MNPs exposure, maternal-fetal health, and systemic MNPs particle deposition," wrote the researchers, in their published paper.

"I don't think we'll ever get rid of plastics altogether. They're too important for modern life," said Stapleton.

"But I do think we might get to a point where we'll have some policies to indicate which ones are less toxic than others," he added.

"Now that we know it's there – as well as in other organs – the next step is to understand why and what that means," she added. How MNP exposure at the infant stage will impact lives? (With inputs from agencies)

The United States has come far ahead from the time when fierce debates were held, public speeches were given and people marched in support of women's suffrage. Today, women voters play an equal role in government formation and have an equally significant impact on the presidential election results, with around 89 million women registered to vote this year.

In an effort to try to understand the political sentiment of these crucial women voters, the leading health policy and polling organisation of the United States, KFF, carried out various surveys among women voters and found that the wave has strongly shifted towards Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is at the losing end.

A video of what is unbelievably the narrowest road in the world has gone viral on social media.

What is more surprising is that this road has a traffic signal at the entrance of the road for pedestrians. However, by the size of the road, it looks like it is almost impossible for two people to walk side by side.

The video of the road was shared on Instagram by an account under the name of Rohit Singh and the post's caption read, “World’s narrowest road.”

In the viral video, a man appears to be standing at the entrance of the road and then the woman can be seen on the other side.

The traffic signal has been installed at the start of the road for the pedestrians to turn on before entering this lane so that no one else comes from the opposite side.

A video of what is unbelievably the narrowest road in the world has gone viral on social media. What is more surprising is that this road has a traffic signal at the entrance of the road for pedestrians. However, by the size of the road, it looks like it is almost impossible for two people to walk side by side. The video of the road was shared on Instagram by an account under the name of Rohit Singh and the post's caption read, “World’s narrowest road.” In the viral video, a man appears to be standing at the entrance of the road and then the woman can be seen on the other side. The traffic signal has been installed at the start of the road for the pedestrians to turn on before entering this lane so that no one else comes from the opposite side.
