Scientists in a new discovery have suggested that a 1.8-kilometre-wide depression, which is called Luna structure, may have been created by the impact of the largest meteorite to have hit Earth in the last 50,000 years.

The meteorite, which is like a fireball, may have triggered wildfires and massive shockwaves that are likely to have spread in an area where the Indus Valley civilisation's people were living thousands of years ago.

“It would have been definitely equivalent to a nuclear bomb, but without the radioactive fallout,” said Gordon Osinski, who works at Western University in Canada, as reported by NewScientist.

The locals in the Indian state of Gujarat have been aware of the 1.8-kilometre-wide crater, which is known as the Luna structure.

High proportion of iridium present in the soil, says geochemical analysis

A geochemical analysis found a high proportion of iridium present in the soil, which suggested that the impact must have been left by an iron meteorite.

David King, who is from the Auburn University in Alabama and was not part of the study, said that although the geochemical analysis appeared to match, the team has not yet completely proven that it is a crater.

"To do this, they would need to find super-heated rocks that melted due to the energy of the impact," he said.

A dog, while digging in the backyard of her owner to find a bone, ended up discovering something rather unexpected.

Homeowner Mathew Sims said that his pup, named Baby, was playing in the backyard of the house in Jacksonville, Florida when the rusted object was dug up by her near the fence line, said the police.

Speaking to FOX 30, Sims said, "You couldn’t tell what it was until you started pulling it up. Once I got it halfway out, I was like oh, I know what this is, let me gently put this back down."

The metallic item discovered was actually an unexploded military bomb, which was decades old.

The state police in Massachusetts were full of gratitude for a robotic dog which saved their lives and averted a tragedy, which involved a person who had barricaded himself in a home and was firing at them.

The robotic dog, which was named Roscoe, was working with the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad.

On March 6, it was deployed in a Barnstable house after the man started firing upon the police officials. Two robots, which are generally used for bomb disposal, were sent by the police into the house to find the suspect. The robotic dog was also sent inside with them.

The robotic dog, which is remotely controlled by the state troopers, first checked out the two main floors before they found a person in the basement.

The suspect, who was carrying a rifle, twice knocked over the robotic dog and then shot it three times. After the attack, the robotic dog's communication was disabled.

Then, the person shot one of the other robots after which the police deployed tear gas and arrested the person.

“The incident provided a stark example of the benefits of mobile platforms capable of opening doors and ascending stairs in tactical missions involving armed suspects,” said state police, in a statement.

“In addition to providing critically important room clearance and situational awareness capabilities, the insertion of Roscoe into the suspect residence prevented the need, at that stage of response, from inserting human operators, and may have prevented a police officer from being involved in an exchange of gunfire," it added.

The company Boston Dynamics, which made the robotic dog called as a SPOT robot, in a statement said that it was the first time somebody had shot one of them.

Reacting to the summoning of an American diplomat by India over the remarks of the US on the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest in the liquor policy case, Washington DC on Wednesday (Mar 27) reiterated its call for "fair, transparent, timely legal processes".

"We continue to follow these actions closely, including the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal," said US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller while responding to questions on India summoning Gloria Berbena.

Asked about the frozen bank accounts of the opposition Congress party, he said, “We are also aware of the Congress party's allegations that tax authorities have frozen some of their bank accounts in a manner that will make it challenging to effectively campaign in the upcoming elections. And we encourage fair, transparent and timely legal processes for each of these issues."

"With respect to your first question, I'm not going to talk about any private diplomatic conversations, but of course, what we have said publicly is what I just said from here, that we encourage fair, transparent, timely legal processes. We don't think anyone should object to that. We’ll make the same thing clear privately," the spokesperson said.

The dollar climbed on Wednesday in the wake of more strong U.S. economic data, nudging the Japanese yen to a 34-year low and into the zone that drew official market intervention in 2022.

The yen traded at 151.97 per dollar in the Asia session, down about 0.2% and weaker than 151.94 where Japanese authorities stepped in during October 2022 to buy the currency and its weakest level since the middle of 1990.

For the quarter ending later this week the yen is the worst-performing major, down more than 7% on the dollar even after Japan's exit last week from negative interest rates.

Officials have been making near daily warnings against speculative moves and markets are jittery about a test of 152 per dollar as Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said Japan won't rule out any steps if it thinks the yen is falling too fast.

"The market is very sensitive to the 152 area," said National Australia Bank strategist Rodrigo Catril.

"If we were to break that level then recent history would suggest that intervention would be much more likely."

BOJ policymaker Naoki Tamura said on Wednesday the central bank must proceed slowly but steadily toward normalising its policies - seemingly giving the yen a little push weaker.

The move set the dollar higher more broadly, with the Chinese yuan and New Zealand dollar sold very close to four-month lows.

The yuan weakened to 7.2285 per dollar despite a strong fix of its trading band by the central bank. The New Zealand dollar <NZD=> fell 0.2% to $0.5988. New Zealand's Treasury revised its economic growth forecasts lower on Tuesday.

Australian data published in the morning showed inflation holding at a two-year low of 3.4% in February, reinforcing market wagers that the next move in interest rates would be down. The Aussie slipped 0.3% to $0.6515.

It is down 4.4% for the quarter. Other moves in Asia were kept in check as markets wait for Friday's release of U.S. core inflation data.

Overnight data showed a bigger-than-expected jump in U.S. durable goods orders in February. While that only partly made up for a large drop in January and came with sub-par consumer confidence data, it pushed the dollar up a little bit.

The euro, at $1.0825 is more or less in the middle of a range it has kept for a year and is down 1.9% for a quarter where expectations for U.S. rate cuts have been scaled back.

The Swiss franc, still reeling from a surprise rate cut in Switzerland last week, fell about 0.5% on the dollar to a four-month low of 0.9042 overnight.

It is down about 7% for the first quarter of the year. The U.S. dollar index is up 3% for the quarter to 104.4.

Sterling was steady at $1.2621 and was broadly steady for the quarter, too, down just 0.8%.

On Tuesday Bank of England policymaker Catherine Mann said she changed her mind to vote for a rate hold last week, instead of a hike, due to consumers turning more stingy. But she still believes financial markets have too many cuts priced in.

BOJ policymaker Naoki Tamura said on Wednesday the central bank must proceed slowly but steadily toward normalising its policies - seemingly giving the yen a little push weaker. Also Read: Nikkei 225 surpasses 40,000 mark amid historic rally in Japanese stock market The move set the dollar higher more broadly, with the Chinese yuan and New Zealand dollar sold very close to four-month lows. Watch: Kanda: Yen's weakness does not reflect the fundamentals The Swiss franc, still reeling from a surprise rate cut in Switzerland last week, fell about 0.5% on the dollar to a four-month low of 0.9042 overnight.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday (Mar 26) said the central government will consider revoking the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Jammu and Kashmir.

In an interview with the JK Media Group, Shah also said the government has plans to pull back troops in the Union Territory (UT) and leave law and order to the Jammu and Kashmir Police alone.

"We have plans to pull back troops and leave law and order to the Jammu and Kashmir Police alone. Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir police was not trusted but today they are leading the operations," he said.

On the controversial AFSPA, the home minister said, "We will also think of revoking AFSPA."

The AFSPA gives the armed forces personnel, operating in the disturbed areas, sweeping powers to search, arrest and to open fire if they deem it necessary for "the maintenance of public order".

An area or district is notified as disturbed under the AFSPA to facilitate the operations of the armed forces.

Shah had earlier said the AFSPA has been removed in 70 per cent areas in the northeastern states even though it is in force in J-K.

There have been demands from various organisations and individuals in J-K and the northeastern states to revoke the AFSPA.

Shah said the assembly elections will be held in J-K before September.
"Enshrining democracy in Jammu and Kashmir is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise and it will be fulfilled. However, this democracy will not be confined to three families alone and will be a people's democracy," he said.

The Supreme Court had directed to conduct the assembly polls in the UT before September.

On the issues that have emerged around the reservation of SCs, STs and OBCs, Mr Shah said for the first time, the OBCs of J-K have been given reservation by the Modi government and women have been given one-third reservation.

"OBC reservations have been made in the panchayat and the urban local bodies. We have made space for the SCs and the STs. Without reducing the share of the Gujjar and Bakarwals, the Pahadis have been given 10 per cent reservation. And special provisions have been made to accommodate the displaced people from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir," he said.

The Centre is determined to ensure that these benefits percolate to the grassroots level, he said.

Shah claimed that National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti tried their best to create acrimony on these reservations but the people have understood their intentions now.

He asked why the NC did not give reservation to these people in the last over 75 years.

The home minister claimed Abdullah had left for England when terrorism was at its peak. Both Abdullah and Mehbooba have no right to speak about on the issue, he added.

"The number of fake encounters that took place during their time has never been matched by any other regime," he said.

Shah said in the last five years, not a single fake encounter has taken place. Rather the FIRs have been lodged against the people involved in fake encounters, he added.

"We will have a dialogue with the youths of Kashmir and not with the organisations that have roots in Pakistan. They are responsible for the deaths of 40,000 youths," he said.

He said the Modi government has banned 12 organisations for their involvement in terror activities, designated 36 individuals as terrorists, registered more than 22 cases to stop terror finance and seized properties worth ₹ 150 crore.

As many as 90 properties were also attached and 134 bank accounts have been frozen, he said.

"We have enshrined peace, and peace cannot be bought. Whoever wants to have a dialogue has to do so within the ambit of the Constitution," he said.

Shah said the Hurriyat Conference has no place in the process of dialogue. He also made it clear that the BJP and the entire Parliament believe that the POK is an integral part of India.

Shah said the total number of deaths from 2004 to 2014 was 2829 and it has come down to 915 during 2014-23, which is a 68 per cent decrease.
The deaths of civilians was 1770 and has decreased to 341, which is an 81 per cent drop. The deaths of security forces decreased from 1060 to 574, which is a 46 per cent decrease, he said.

The senior BJP leader said without the support of the people, such a comprehensive change can never take place.

"The people who talk about Islam should know that 85 per cent of the deceased were our Muslim brothers and sisters," he said.

Shah also asked the youths of J-K to stay away from the conspiracies of Pakistan.

"Today Pakistan is shrouded by the scourge of hunger and poverty and even people there see Kashmir as heaven. I want to tell everyone that if anyone can save Kashmir, he is Prime Minister Modi," he said.

The home minister said the Modi government is boosting the morale of the security forces by giving jobs to the family members of the martyrs.

"Today, not a single martyr's family is left without a job," he said.

Former United States president Donald Trump on Tuesday (Mar 26) joined hands with country music singer Lee Greenwood, who is famous for the song “God Bless the USA”, to promote and sell pricey Bibles. The singer has always been present in the political rallies of the former president.

“All Americans need a Bible in their home, and I have many,” said Trump in a video shared on Truth Social in which he announced the business deal.

“It’s my favourite book. It’s a lot of people’s favourite book. Religion and Christianity are the biggest things missing from this country, and I truly believe that we need to bring them back,” he said. “It’s one of the biggest problems we have. That’s why our country’s going haywire — we’ve lost religion in our country," he said.

The Christian holy text is the bestselling book in the world and churches are always happy to distribute them among the people for free.

The “God Bless the U.S.A. Bible” costs around $59.99 and does not include shipping or other fees.

In that money, the buyers supposedly get a variety of extra features which are generally not included in run-of-the-mill Bibles.

The Trump-Greenwood Bible, which is a translation of King James, includes a copy of a “handwritten chorus” to the Greenwood hit, as per the website.

The Bible also includes the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence and the Pledge of Allegiance, said the site.

A chilling audio recording has emerged in which Baltimore officials can be heard rushing and making last-minute efforts to stop the traffic heading towards the bridge, seconds before it collapsed after it was hit by a cargo ship.

The crew on the ship gave a mayday call moments before it crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday morning (Mar 27) which allowed the traffic authorities to stop the vehicles, said Maryland's Governor Wes Moore.

Nearly 90 seconds after the crew's mayday call, another person was heard reporting the collapse of the bridge in the audio.

"I need one of you guys on the south side, one of you guys on the north side, hold all traffic on the Key Bridge," one person was heard saying.

"There's a ship approaching that just lost their steering so until we get that under control, we've got to stop all traffic. The whole bridge just fell down. Start, start whoever … everybody. The whole bridge just collapsed," they added.

Baltimore bridge collapse: Chilling audio narrates how cops scrambled to halt traffic

It's being called a case of 'mental derailment'. The US President Joe Biden said he had travelled to the collapsed Baltimore Key Bridge by train 'many times'. So what's the problem? The bridge does not have any rail lines and is only commutable by car or other vehicles.

After Biden claimed that he commuted over Francis Scott Key Bridge “many, many times … either on a train or by car", he was fact-checked by social media users.

“At about 1:30 [a.m.], a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which I’ve been over many, many times commuting from the state of Delaware either on a train or by car,” said Biden, in his first public remarks on the tragedy

“I’ve been to Baltimore Harbor many times,” he added. “And the bridge collapsed, sending several people and vehicles into the water — into the river," he added.

Clarifying Biden's remarks, a White House official in a statement said that he was "clearly" describing driving.

Biden faces backlash on social media

Many users on X pointed out that the bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River on Tuesday morning (Mar 26) after being hit by a massive cargo ship never had any rail lines attached to it.

Biden, who is said to have travelled more than one million miles aboard Amtrak in 36 years, was slammed for “inserting himself” in another tragedy.

It's being called a case of 'mental derailment'. The US President Joe Biden said he had travelled to the collapsed Baltimore Key Bridge by train 'many times'. So what's the problem?

It's being called a case of 'mental derailment'. The US President Joe Biden said he had travelled to the collapsed Baltimore Key Bridge by train 'many times'. So what's the problem? The bridge does not have any rail lines and is only commutable by car or other vehicles. After Biden claimed that he commuted over Francis Scott Key Bridge “many, many times … either on a train or by car", he was fact-checked by social media users. “At about 1:30 [a.m.], a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which I’ve been over many, many times commuting from the state of Delaware either on a train or by car,” said Biden, in his first public remarks on the tragedy “I’ve been to Baltimore Harbor many times,” he added. “And the bridge collapsed, sending several people and vehicles into the water — into the river," he added. Biden faces backlash on social media Many users on X pointed out that the bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River on Tuesday morning (Mar 26) after being hit by a massive cargo ship never had any rail lines attached to it. Biden, who is said to have travelled more than one million miles aboard Amtrak in 36 years, was slammed for “inserting himself” in another tragedy. “So many lies! He lies just to lie,” said one X user. “There is no value to him inserting himself into this situation," he added. Indian student Satyam Surana has alleged that hate and smear campaigns were carried out against him during the student union elections while he was pursuing education at the London School of Economics this year.

Surana came into the spotlight after he picked up the national flag from the road and defied the attack by extremists at the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom last year.

Surana said that just 12 hours before the voting was about to start, someone launched a very 'well-planned' campaign targetting him. He added that in the campaign he was called a 'fascist' and linked with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Indian student, who hails from Pune, practised at the Bombay High Court for some months and has been pursuing an LLM at the London School of Economics.

Posts used with a malicious agenda to call me a "fascist": Surana

Speaking about the complete set of incidents, the Indian student said that the LSE elections were announced in February and early March. He had filed his nomination for the post of general secretary.

"From March 14-15, we noticed that my posters were being ripped off, torn. We complained to the authorities. After we replaced our posters, on March 16, we saw that some posters were defaced. There were crosses on my face, it was written 'anyone but Satyam'. I was cancelled out," said Satyam, while speaking to the news agency ANI.

"On March 17 afternoon, there were messages in all groups of LSE. Indian groups, law school groups. The messages claimed, 'This Satyam Surana is a BJP supporter, he is a fascist person, an Islamophobe, transphobe'. The messages were so seditious and contentious of the Indian government and the current establishment," he said.

He further alleged that screenshots of his posts on X were taken by radical elements, in which he had appreciated the BJP government, and added that those screenshots were used with a malicious agenda to call him a "fascist".

"With my entire team, I went through the entire campus. We were reaching out across departments and explaining our policies. Surana further said that he also faced flak after he called Khalistanis 'terrorists' in one of his posts.

"See, this is my country. I will always be an advocate for my country. How is Indian politics relevant to the student union elections in the UK? My views and endorsements of my government are entirely my opinion," Surana said.

"I was called a Neo-Nazi supporter, Right Wing, out of campus. See, when the message heading was circulated as the right wing out of campus, it is very clear that the campaign was dictated and planned by the left wing," he added.

He further claimed that those targetting him are not able to digest the development and success of India under the leadership of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The people of the international community are not aware of what is going on in India. Every international person is looking up to India and looking up to the current Prime Minister as a stalwart legendary politician. Our Prime Minister has the highest approval rating in the entire world, we have shown what we can do during COVID-19, and we are emerging as the third-largest economy. But, sadly these groups who can't digest this fact are spreading not misinformation, but disinformation," he said.
