North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the country's first nuclear counterattack drill which simulated its "nuclear trigger" management system, confirmed state news agency KCNA on Tuesday (April 23).

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the country's first nuclear counterattack drill which simulated its "nuclear trigger" management system, confirmed state news agency KCNA on Tuesday (April 23). Several short-range ballistic missiles were fired by North Korea on Monday (April 22) towards the sea off its east coast, stated South Korea's military. North Korea's attempt to simulate its "nuclear trigger" management system appeared as a warning signal to its enemies. To take part in the testing of the nationwide nuclear management system, known as "nuclear trigger", North Korea's artillery forces joined the first such drills of the country on Monday (April 22) to showcase the country's diversified nuclear capabilities and retaliate against "provocative and invasive" military exercises of the United States and South Korea, reported KCNA. The simulation drills involved firing artillery using mock nuclear warheads and maneuvering troops in a nuclear counterattack posture, if nuclear crisis alerts were issued, as per KCNA. Also Read: Japan issues alert after North Korea fires ballistic missile towards East Sea Kim also praised the readiness of "the world's best" tactical nuclear attack weapons and expressed his satisfaction with the drills conducted, said the state media. Kim "guided a combined tactical drill simulating a nuclear counterattack involving super-large multiple rocket artillerymen," the report stated. The rockets "hit their island target" nearly 352 kilometres (219 miles) away, the report added. It is believed that North Korea has been making preparations to launch another spy satellite after a reconnaissance satellite was successfully placed in orbit in November. Last week, North Korea said that a strategic cruise missile was fired by the country to test a large warhead as well as a new anti-aircraft missile. South Korea calls it 'blatant provocation', Japan issues alert South Korea's military on Monday (April 22) stated that the missiles covered 300 kilometres from the Pyongyang area before they splashed down in the water east of the Korean peninsula. The launch was branded as a "blatant provocation." The launch was also confirmed by Japan, which also issued an alert, as its government spokesman stated that one missile - which went at a maximum altitude of 50 kilometres - landed outside of the EEZ of the country. Watch: North Korea conducts cruise missile warhead test This is the second launch carried out by Pyongyang in less than a week, which on Friday (April 19) tested a "super-large warhead" that was designed to help fire a strategic cruise missile, as per the state media. The launch of missiles comes after North Korea's ally Russia used its United Nations Security Council veto in March to end monitoring of sanctions violations by the UN on Pyongyang for its nuclear and weapons programme. The United Kingdom parliament on Monday (April 22) passed the controversial Rwanda migrant bill which will allow the government to deport asylum-seekers to the East African nation.

The United Kingdom parliament on Monday (April 22) passed the controversial Rwanda migrant bill which will allow the government to deport asylum-seekers to the East African nation. The bill was passed after a lengthy tussle between the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The bill, after being scrutinised by the members of the unelected upper house, was repeatedly sent back with suggested amendments to MPs in the lower chamber. However, eventually, they agreed that the bill did not require any further changes and could now become a law. Reacting to the passing of the bill, Home Secretary James Cleverly called it a “landmark moment in our plan to stop the boats”. Also Read: Sunak's Rwanda Policy: Sunak plans to use leased RAF voyagers to deport migrants: Report In a video shared on social media, Cleverly said: “The Safety of Rwanda Bill has passed in Parliament and it will become law within days. The Act will prevent people from abusing the law by using false human rights claims to block removals. And it makes clear that the UK Parliament is sovereign, giving the Government the power to reject interim blocking measures imposed by European courts." “I promised to do what was necessary to clear the path for the first flight. That’s what we have done. Now we’re working day in and day out to get flights off the ground," he added. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, along with his ruling Conservatives, has been trying to push through the legislation which will compel judges to see the East African nation as a safe third country. The absence of any deportations, two years after the bill was first introduced, was perceived as a major failure for Rishi Sunak, who had earlier highlighted stopping small boats as a key priority. The passing of the bill has brought the prime minister close to the first deportation flight which is likely to take off soon. Sunak had asked parliamentarians to “sit there tonight and vote no matter how late it goes” before the beginning of the fourth round of ‘ping pong’ between the Commons and the Lords. Sunak plans first migrant flight to Rwanda in next 10-12 weeks British PM Sunak on Monday (April 22) said that the first flight filled with asylum seekers to Rwanda will leave in 10-12 weeks. While addressing a press conference, Sunak said that he cannot outline the plan's exact operational details, but added that specific preparations have been made by the government. Watch: Rishi Sunak: First deportation flights will leave UK for Rwanda in 10-12 weeks "I can confirm that we've put an airfield on standby, booked commercial charter planes for specific slots, and we have 500 highly trained individuals ready to escort illegal migrants all the way to Rwanda with 300 more trained in the coming weeks. We are ready. Plans are in place. And these flights will go come what may," Sunak said. "Fundamental change in the global equation on migration. If you come here illegally, you will not be able to stay," he added. As per the timeline decided by Sunak, the first flight will leave in July. (With inputs from agencies)

The owner of social media platform X, Elon Musk, on Tuesday (April 23) said that they will challenge an Australian injunction which has asked the platform to remove the videos of the church stabbing incident that took place in Sydney.

The owner of social media platform X, Elon Musk, on Tuesday (April 23) said that they will challenge an Australian injunction which has asked the platform to remove the videos of the church stabbing incident that took place in Sydney. An injunction was secured by Australia's internet watchdog late Monday as per which X is supposed to hide videos which allegedly showed someone allegedly slashing a Sydney bishop in the head during a live-streamed sermon. The pleas of the Australian government to pull down the images were earlier ignored by X and Musk had stated that the company would appeal against the injunction on free speech grounds. Also Read: Elon Musk postpones India trip, aims to visit later this year "Our concern is that if ANY country is allowed to censor content for ALL countries, which is what the Australian 'eSafety Commissar' is demanding, then what is to stop any country from controlling the entire Internet," posted the tech billionaire on X. "We have already censored the content in question for Australia, pending legal appeal, and it is stored only on servers in the USA," he said. Australian PM Albanese calls Musk "arrogant billionaire" Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that Musk is an "arrogant billionaire" who is not able to see the distress caused by the videos. "We'll do what's necessary to take on this arrogant billionaire who thinks he's above the law, but also above common decency," said Albanese, while speaking to public broadcaster ABC. "The idea that someone would go to court for the right to put up violent content on a platform shows how out-of-touch Mr Musk is," he added. A late-night injunction was granted to Australia's eSafety Commission which forced X to remove the church stabbing footage for the next two days as further arguments remained pending. The videos were blocked by X in Australia, however, they are still visible to users in other parts of the world. Australia, with its groundbreaking "Online Safety Act" which was passed in 2021, has made efforts to hold tech giants accountable for the posts made by their users online. Recently, X was slapped with a fine of $388,000 by the watchdog for not being able to show how it is combatting child sexual abuse content. (With inputs from agencies)

In solidarity with the hundreds of students who have been protesting against the Gaza war inside the campus of Columbia University in New York, multiple teaching faculty members held a mass walkout on Monday (April 22) against the university's decision to allow the police to arrest students. The members of the teaching facility walked with the students, who were arrested and suspended last week, to show their support for these pro-Palestine protesters. The teachers held solidarity protests as students again erected tents in the middle of campus on Monday (April 22) after they were torn down days back when police arrested more than 100 students. Also Read: Columbia University shifts to virtual classes following on-campus arrests amid anti-Israel protests The university also announced on Monday (April 22) that classes will be held remotely as unrest continues on the New York campus. A "Gaza Solidarity Encampment" was established by the demonstrators on the lawns at Columbia. Apart from Columbia University, pro-Palestinian protesters were also arrested by the police at Yale University on Monday (April 22). More than 45 protesters, which included some students, were arrested by the police, as per Yale Daily News, the university’s paper. The students have been on hunger strike and are demanding that the universities support a ceasefire in Gaza. The NYPD also arrested dozens of student and faculty protesters at New York University on Monday night (April 22). Biden criticises antisemitic protests Speaking about the pro-Palestine protests which have rocked elite university campuses, US President Joe Biden said, "I condemn the antisemitic protests. That's why I've set up a programme to deal with that. I also condemn those who don't understand what's going on with the Palestinians." "Over the past days, there have been too many examples of intimidating and harassing behaviour on our campus," Shafik said. "Anti-Semitic language, like any other language that is used to hurt and frighten people, is unacceptable and appropriate action will be taken. To deescalate the rancour and give us all a chance to consider the next steps, I am announcing that all classes will be held virtually on Monday," the president added. (With inputs from agencies)

Disclaimer: Some readers may find the story disturbing. Discretion is advised. According to a new report published by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), children under the age of six have been manipulated into “disturbing” acts of sexual abuse. As per the IWF's abuse hotline, last year was the most extreme year on record as it saw a 22 per cent increase in 'category A' imagery, which includes penetrative sexual activity as well as images which involve indulgence in sexual activity with an animal, or sadism. For the first time, the charity looked into the data on abuse against children, between the age bracket of three to six, in the whole year. The report was focused on young kids who were made the target of sexual abuse when they logged into online platforms through mobile phones and devices within the family home. "All 'self-generated' child sexual abuse imagery is horrific but seeing so many very young children in these images and videos is particularly distressing," stated the report. Also Read: Two kids dead, 15 injured after drunk woman drives car through birthday party in US The number of child sexual abuse images, which were 'self-generated', increased by 27 per cent in one year. These images are generated by the perpetrator as they remotely direct the victim and record them using webcams. The IWF report included a vast majority of abusive images. "The term 'self-generated' does not mean that the child is instigating the creation of this sexual content themselves," stated the report's authors. "They are being groomed, coerced and in some cases blackmailed into engaging in sexual behaviour. They are never to blame for the creation or existence of this imagery," he added. In many of those images, the children were seen in a home setting and generally sitting in their bedroom. According to the analysts, there were soft toys, games, books and bedding featuring cartoon characters in the background of the images. "These are very young children, supposedly in the safety of their own bedrooms, very likely unaware that the activities they are being coerced into doing are being recorded and saved and ultimately shared multiple times on the internet," stated the report. IWF appeals to warn children about online dangers The charity has said that children, below the age of six, need to be warned about online dangers. “The opportunistic criminals who want to manipulate your children into disturbing acts of sexual abuse are not a distant threat,” stated Susie Hargreaves, the IWF’s chief executive. Watch: Report urges immediate fixes to online child exploitation 'Cybertipline' “They are trying to talk to them now on phones and devices you can find in any family home. If children under six are being targeted, we need to be having age-appropriate conversations now to make sure they know how to spot the dangers,” he added. "This deeply disturbing report shows that predators are targeting younger and younger victims. My message to parents is to speak to your children about their use of social media, because the platforms you presume safe may pose a risk," said Security Minister Tom Tugendhart. A team of astronomers, who have been trying to track the origin of the near-Earth asteroid Kamo'oalewa, are now proposing a theory which hints that it was most likely part of the Moon.

A team of astronomers, who have been trying to track the origin of the near-Earth asteroid Kamo'oalewa, are now proposing a theory which hints that it was most likely part of the Moon. The mysterious space rock was first discovered in 2016 and was between 130 and 328 feet in diameter. A research team, headed by Tsinghua University astronomer Yifei Jiao, has hinted that the rock had broken from a geological feature of the Moon known as the Giordano Bruno crater. The crater was named after a 16th-century Italian cosmological theorist. "We have explored the processes for impact-induced lunar fragments migrating into Earth co-orbital space and presented support for Kamo'oalewa's possible origin from the formation of the Giordano Bruno crater a few million years ago," wrote the researchers, in their paper which was published in the journal Nature Astronomy. Also Read: NASA's Juno spacecraft spots glass-smooth lava lake and a mountain on a moon "This would directly link a specific asteroid in space to its source crater on the Moon and suggests the existence of more small asteroids composed of lunar material yet to be discovered in near-Earth space," the researchers added. For years, astronomers have remained fascinated by the space rock because it is orbiting the Sun in an Earth-like orbit and is likely to remain stable there for millions of years. Space rock matches Moon's composition According to spectrum analysis, the rock also perfectly matches the composition of the Moon. University of Arizona planetary sciences professor Renu Malhotra, who is also a coauthor of another paper which also suggests that the chunk once belonged to the moon, while speaking to Astronomy, said, "We looked at Kamo’oalewa’s spectrum only because it was in an unusual orbit. If it had been a typical near-Earth asteroid, no one would have thought to find its spectrum and we wouldn’t have known Kamo’oalewa could be a lunar fragment." With the use of computer models to simulate how Kamo’oalewa would have impacted the Moon's surface, Jiao and his colleagues reached the conclusion that it would have created a crater larger than 12 miles. Watch: US government asks NASA to create time zones for the moon The Giordano crater - which is spread across 13.6 miles - appeared like the best candidate to the scientists. The lack of debris further suggested that the space rock is somewhere around ten and 100 million years old, which makes it relatively younger than the Moon. "It is clear that the largest, youngest craters are more probable sources, as they produce more escaping fragments that still remain in space or the Earth co-orbital region," wrote Jiao and his team, adding that Giordano Bruno "is the only possible source crater satisfying the criterion."

In a very strange incident, a Belgian court dismissed a drink-driving charge against a man after they found that he was suffering from a rare metabolic condition which led to the production of alcohol in his body.

In a very strange incident, a Belgian court dismissed a drink-driving charge against a man after they found that he was suffering from a rare metabolic condition which led to the production of alcohol in his body. In the court, the 40-year-old man was able to prove that he was suffering from auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), in which the carbohydrates get fermented in his stomach and increase ethanol levels in his blood which finally leads to signs of intoxication. The unusual case was confirmed to Agence France-Presse by the man's lawyer Anse Ghesquiere after it was reported in Belgian media. The lawyer said that as per the scientists, the number of ABS cases present in the entire world has remained underestimated. Till now, only around 20 people have been officially diagnosed with ABS condition. Also Read: Alcohol-induced blackouts linked to drinking patterns, not just quantity: Study The woman emphasised that her client, whose identity was not disclosed, provided evidence of his ABS after three doctors conducted tests on him. The factors which led to the scenario and were unforeseen by law in the man's case were recognised by the court and he was acquitted of the charge. How did the rare case unfold? The man knocked on the doors of the court after his vehicle was pulled over by the police in April 2022 and a drink-driving charge was registered against him after his breathalyser reading was 0.91 milligrams of alcohol per litre, and his breath was found containing 0.71 milligrams again a month later. In Belgium, the legal limit is 0.22 milligrams per litre of air exhaled which is similar to a blood-alcohol level remaining at 0.5 gram per litre. In 2019, the man had again landed in trouble. He was fined and his driving licence was suspended even though he had claimed that he had not drunk any alcohol. Watch: Decoding: 2024's latest travel trend: What is 'Gig-Tripping'? Apparently, the man was not aware of his syndrome till his recent run-in with the police. Ghesquiere stated that she and the accused man are waiting for his acquittal's formal notification. She emphasised that an appeal was to be lodged by the prosecution service a month ago if it wished to do so. Meanwhile, the man has now switched to a carbohydrate-light diet so that his stomach is not producing more alcohol. During his initial court appearance in March, he was requested by the prosecutor to avoid any alcoholic beverages, reported the Belgian state television channel VRT. (With inputs from agencies)

Scientists have spotted a massive explosion of cosmic gas in the centre of a galaxy which has released cosmic material worth 50 million suns in the universe. Scientists have spotted a massive explosion of cosmic gas in the centre of a galaxy which has released cosmic material worth 50 million suns in the universe. Also Read: Space trash threatens Earth's magnetic field The scientists discovered this strange astronomical phenomenon when it occurred in the galaxy NGC 4383, which is around 54,000,000 light-years away from the nearby Virgo cluster as the gas flowed out from the galaxy at a rate of over 447,000 miles per hour. What are gas outflows and when do they occur? The gas outflows take place when large amounts of gas get blown out from one galaxy into intergalactic space and they are generally driven by some energetic cosmic events like supernovae. Such gas outflows can have a major impact on their host galaxies by regulating the formation of stars. Through the ejection of gas from the galaxy, the outflows limit the material available for new stars which affects the growth and structure of the galaxy. Such gas outflows also fill the space between the galaxies with the heavy elements which have been produced inside stars. This particular outflow is said to have occurred because of huge stellar explosions near the centre of NGC 4383 that ejected major amounts of hydrogen gas as well as other elements. As per the paper, nearly 50 million suns' worth of gas was released from these explosions. "Very little is known about the physics of outflows and their properties because outflows are very hard to detect," said study co-author Adam Watts, who is an astrophysicist at the University of Western Australia and the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), in a statement. Watch: China 'militarising' space? "The ejected gas is quite rich in heavy elements giving us a unique view of the complex process of mixing between hydrogen and metals in the outflowing gas," he stated. "In this particular case, we detected oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and many other chemical elements," he added. In the research paper, the scientists have revealed a high-resolution map of the explosion through which they plan to decode the mysteries of how chemical elements have polluted the space between galaxies, and how the loss of this gas has impacted the galaxies. Miracle in doomed Gaza: Baby delivered alive from dead body of mother killed in attack

United States President Joe Biden on Sunday (April 21) warned of an “alarming surge of antisemitism” in a statement which was released over the approaching Jewish holiday of Passover while referring to the student protests at Columbia University.

“Silence is complicity. Even in recent days, we’ve seen harassment and calls for violence against Jews. This blatant Antisemitism is reprehensible and dangerous — and it has absolutely no place on college campuses, or anywhere in our country," read Biden’s statement.

The statement was released by the president to formally mark the religious holiday which starts on Monday (April 22).

“My commitment to the safety of the Jewish people, the security of Israel, and its right to exist as an independent Jewish state is ironclad,” Biden said.

Biden's statement came hours after the White House issued another statement in which it criticised appeals for violence and “physical intimidation targeting Jewish students and the Jewish community” on Columbia’s campus.

Rabbi asks Jewish students to vacate campus

Earlier, Rabbi Elie Buechler appealed to all 300 Jewish students to exit the campus for their own safety as protests continued.

“What we are witnessing in and around campus is terrible and tragic. The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University’s Public Safety and the (New York Police Department) cannot guarantee Jewish students’ safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy," Buechler wrote in an online post.

“While every American has the right to peaceful protest, calls for violence and physical intimidation targeting Jewish students and the Jewish community are blatantly Antisemitic, unconscionable, and dangerous — they have absolutely no place on any college campus, or anywhere in the United States of America,” said White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates, in a statement.

The statement was released after a video appeared on social media over the weekend in which pro-Palestinian activists were seen telling Jewish students, “The 7th of October is going to be every day for you,” while referring to the Hamas-led attack on Israel.

“Echoing the rhetoric of terrorist organisations, especially in the wake of the worst massacre committed against the Jewish people since the Holocaust, is despicable. We condemn these statements in the strongest terms,” said Bates.

Rabbi asks Jewish students to vacate campus Earlier, Rabbi Elie Buechler appealed to all 300 Jewish students to exit the campus for their own safety as protests continued.
