<p>Scientists suggest that a 10-minute brain scan could detect dementia several years before its noticeable onset. They achieved an estimated 80 per cent accuracy up to nine years before a person actually knew they suffer from dementia.</p>

<h2><strong>Fighting Dementia: What does it mean?</strong></h2>

<p>It simply means that if the findings are confirmed in a larger cohort, the scan could become a routine procedure in dementia treatment.</p>

<p>"We have known for a long time that the function of the brain starts to change many years before you get dementia symptoms," professor Charles Marshall, who led the work at Queen Mary University of London, was quoted as saying by the Guardian.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This could help us to be more precise at identifying those changes using an MRI scan that you could do on any NHS scanner."</p>

<p>The study was published in Nature Mental Health.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Predicting who is going to get dementia in the future will be vital for developing treatments that can prevent the irreversible loss of brain cells that causes the symptoms of dementia," Marshall said.</p>

<h2><strong>What did scientists do to predict dementia?</strong></h2>

<p>Scientists used functional MRI scans from 1,100 UK Biobank volunteers to detect changes in the brain's "default mode network" (DMN).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The network reflects how effectively different regions are communicating with each other that are particularly vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Of the volunteers, 81 went on to develop dementia after the UK Biobank scan.</p>

<p>The researchers then deployed Artificial Intelligence to identify changes to the DMN that were most characteristic of those at risk.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The resultant model could identify those at risk with 80 per cent accuracy up to nine years before diagnosis.</p>

France confirmed on Thursday (June 6) that a French national has been arrested in Moscow but denied Russian claim that he was working for the French government to gather intelligence. The development coincides with French President Emmanuel Macron's remarks during an event to commemorate second World War's 'D-Day' landings in Normandy in which he said that Paris will transfer Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine amid its war with Russia. "Tomorrow we will launch a new cooperation and announce the transfer of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine, made by French manufacturer Dassault, and train their Ukrainian pilots in France," Macron told France’s TF1 broadcaster on Thursday (June 6). NBA nears historic $76 billion media rights deal

<p class="MsoNormal">The Bank of Canada (BoC) cut its benchmark policy rate on Wednesday, becoming the first G7 member to loosen monetary policy in a global climate of high interest rates. The central bank dropped interest rates to 4.75% from 5%, the first reduction in four years, in a widely anticipated decision to relieve pressure on deeply indebted consumers.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">"Let's just enjoy the moment for a bit," stated Governor Tiff Macklem during a press conference. Macklem emphasised that any additional rate cuts would be contingent on ongoing falls in inflation and economic developments consistent with the bank's predictions.<o:p></o:p></p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal"><b>Future rate cuts dependent on inflation trajectory<o:p></o:p></b></h2>

<p class="MsoNormal">Governor Macklem stated that the timing of future rate decreases would be tightly connected to inflation trends and economic performance. In April, Canada's inflation fell to a three-year low of 2.7 per cent, staying below 3 per cent for four months while being above the Bank of Canada's 2 per cent objective.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">"If inflation continues to ease and our confidence that inflation is on track to reach the 2 per cent target grows, it is reasonable to expect further cuts to our policy interest rate," Macklem said, adding that decisions would be decided on a meeting-by-meeting basis.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Despite financial markets pricing in a 39 per cent possibility of another decrease to 4.50% next month, some analysts are hopeful of a July reduction. Royce Mendes, head of the macro strategy at Desjardins Group, and Andrew Grantham, senior economist at CIBC, predict a decrease in July, with Grantham forecasting four reductions this year.<o:p></o:p></p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal"><b>Market reaction and economic context<o:p></o:p></b></h2>

<p class="MsoNormal">Following the BoC's decision, the Canadian dollar fell 0.22 per cent to 1.3708 per US dollar, or 72.98 US cents, after originally rising in early trading. The BoC's move aligns it with other central banks, such as Sweden's Riksbank and the Swiss National Bank, which have similarly decreased interest rates to fight slowing economic growth despite lower inflation.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Macklem acknowledged the risk of deviating too far from US monetary policy, adding that US inflation remains sticky, with the Federal Reserve forecast to decrease rates only once this year. The Bank of Canada (BoC) cut its benchmark policy rate on Wednesday, becoming the first G7 member to loosen monetary policy in a global climate of high interest rates.

The Bank of Canada (BoC) cut its benchmark policy rate on Wednesday, becoming the first G7 member to loosen monetary policy in a global climate of high interest rates. The central bank dropped interest rates to 4.75% from 5%, the first reduction in four years, in a widely anticipated decision to relieve pressure on deeply indebted consumers. "Let's just enjoy the moment for a bit," stated Governor Tiff Macklem during a press conference. Macklem emphasised that any additional rate cuts would be contingent on ongoing falls in inflation and economic developments consistent with the bank's predictions. Future rate cuts dependent on inflation trajectory Governor Macklem stated that the timing of future rate decreases would be tightly connected to inflation trends and economic performance. In April, Canada's inflation fell to a three-year low of 2.7 per cent, staying below 3 per cent for four months while being above the Bank of Canada's 2 per cent objective. "If inflation continues to ease and our confidence that inflation is on track to reach the 2 per cent target grows, it is reasonable to expect further cuts to our policy interest rate," Macklem said, adding that decisions would be decided on a meeting-by-meeting basis. Despite financial markets pricing in a 39 per cent possibility of another decrease to 4.50% next month, some analysts are hopeful of a July reduction. Royce Mendes, head of the macro strategy at Desjardins Group, and Andrew Grantham, senior economist at CIBC, predict a decrease in July, with Grantham forecasting four reductions this year. Market reaction and economic context Following the BoC's decision, the Canadian dollar fell 0.22 per cent to 1.3708 per US dollar, or 72.98 US cents, after originally rising in early trading. The BoC's move aligns it with other central banks, such as Sweden's Riksbank and the Swiss National Bank, which have similarly decreased interest rates to fight slowing economic growth despite lower inflation. Macklem acknowledged the risk of deviating too far from US monetary policy, adding that US inflation remains sticky, with the Federal Reserve forecast to decrease rates only once this year. "There are limits to how far we can diverge from the United States, but we're not close to those limits," Macklem stated.
