<p>It is worth mentioning that the Valparaíso region experienced an intense heat wave this summer, with temperatures soaring to 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit. During the first week of February 2024, deadly fires ravaged the area amid extreme heat and the city of Viña del Mar in the region, which is home to 300,000 people, was hit particularly hard.</p>

<p>As per reports, the accused firefighter who was arrested is a 22-year-old. He reportedly joined the force only 1.5 years ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Commander of the 13th Fire Company of Valparaiso Vicente Maggiolo said,&nbsp;“We are completely devastated by what happened, it is a totally isolated incident... we have served Valparaiso for more than 170 years and cannot allow such things."&nbsp;</p>

<p>There were bodies lying around in the streets and many homes were destroyed in the unfortunate February incident.&nbsp;</p>

The disaster of the massive quake resulted in over 500 confirmed deaths, with hundreds&nbsp;injured, many people missing and $30 billion in damages.</p>

<p>Vina del Mar that was gutted in the February fire is a popular tourist destination. In the wake of the horrific incident at the time, the Chilean president had announced two days of national mourning starting February 5.</p>

<p>David Lloyd told a media outlet about the last conversation he held with his son on the day of the attack. According to David Lloyd, Davy and Natalie were ambushed as they left church.</p>

<p>A post on Missions in Haiti’s Facebook page shared that Davy was taken to the house, tied up and beaten by a gang. Later, the gang filled the mission's trucks with everything they wanted to steal and left.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a later update in the incident, the organisation after a gap of three hours reported that the missionaries were killed by the gang at about 9 o'clock this evening. "We all are devastated," it posted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Haitian Emergency Response Operations (HERO) retrieved the bodies and transported the remains of the American couple to a hospital morgue.</p>

<p>Lloyd's mother Alicia revealed that after the initial beating, neighbours checked on her son, but a second gang’s arrival escalated the situation.</p>

<h2><strong>Last conversation with son&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>David Lloyd recounted his last conversation with his son during the attacks. The mission and church across the street had security, but when they came out they&nbsp;were overwhelmed when three pickup trucks filled with armed men arrived.</p>

<p>Despite Davy’s desperate call for help, his father could not locate assistance.&nbsp;“He was begging me to find someone to get in there and help him, and I did all I could but I couldn’t locate anybody.”</p>

US: Special Counsel seeks gag order on Trump who claims FBI agents were 'authorised to shoot me'

<p>US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin has gone through a&nbsp;"scheduled, elective, and minimally invasive follow-up non-surgical procedure" on Saturday (May 25) and has resumed his duties after returning home.</p>

<p>Deputy Secretary of Defence Kathleen Hicks had temporarily assumed the charge as Acting Secretary of Defence when the&nbsp;procedure was going on.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The procedure took place at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and is related to a previously known bladder issue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, Pentagon's spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said that Austin has returned home.</p>

<p>"He is now back home and will continue with his official schedule which includes events on Monday for Memorial Day," Ryder said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Austin's surgery to treat prostate cancer&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Austin, aged 70, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre on New Year's Day (Jan 1) due to complications arising from a medical procedure.</p>

<p>Prior to this ICU admission, he had undergone minor surgery on December 22 last year following the detection of prostate cancer during routine screening. The secretary faced criticism and sparked political controversy after not disclosing his surgery to the White House as well as his subsequent hospitalisation in January due to complications.&nbsp;Even US President Joe Biden was unaware of Austin's hospitalisation until several days later.</p>

<p>Austin was also hospitalised in February in a Washington, DC hospital in connection to the "emergent bladder issue".</p>

<p>Critics called for his resignation, alleging that the senior government official had violated the law by not reporting his hospitalisation to his superiors. Deputy Secretary of Defence Kathleen Hicks had temporarily assumed the charge as Acting Secretary of Defence when the procedure was going on. The procedure took place at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and is related to a previously known bladder issue. In a statement, Pentagon's spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said that Austin has returned home. "He is now back home and will continue with his official schedule which includes events on Monday for Memorial Day," Ryder said. Prior to this ICU admission, he had undergone minor surgery on December 22 last year following the detection of prostate cancer during routine screening. The secretary faced criticism and sparked political controversy after not disclosing his surgery to the White House as well as his subsequent hospitalisation in January due to complications. Even US President Joe Biden was unaware of Austin's hospitalisation until several days later. Austin was also hospitalised in February in a Washington, DC hospital in connection to the "emergent bladder issue". Critics called for his resignation, alleging that the senior government official had violated the law by not reporting his hospitalisation to his superiors.
