The money will be used to fast-track health and food supplies to the Sri Lankan public which has to run from pillar to post for the basic necessities. “Australia stands with the people of Sri Lanka, especially those experiencing severe hardship. It is in Australia’s national interest to strengthen Sri Lanka’s economic resilience and accelerate its recovery.” said Foreign Minister Penny Wong. The addition of $25 million takes Australia's contribution towards the island nation to $75 million. Reportedly, in June, Australia had committed $50 million. Also read | Sri Lanka govt asks Thailand to grant entry to Gotabaya Rajapaksa Australian Minister of Home Affairs Clare O’Neil had met then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and announced the monetary help. “We will contribute an immediate 22 million dollars to the World Food Programme for emergency food assistance to help three million people in Sri Lanka meet their daily nutritional needs." read the statement. "Australia will also provide 23 million dollars in development assistance to Sri Lanka in 2022-23. These contributions are in addition to 5 million dollars recently provided to United Nations agencies for Sri Lanka," it further added. The island nation of Sri Lanka, housing 22 million people is going through its worst economic crisis since it gained independence in 1948. After the President, Prime Minister and other high-ranking officials deserted office, the entire country plunged into a state of crisis. The country has defaulted on its debts; faces an acute shortage of fuel, medicines and soaring food commodity rates. However, according to makeshift President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the emergency imposed in the country is expected to end this week. A federal judge in the US on Thursday refused to grant bail to Hadi Matar, the 24-year-old man accused of attempting to murder India-born novelist Salman Rushdie.

A federal judge in the US on Thursday refused to grant bail to Hadi Matar, the 24-year-old man accused of attempting to murder India-born novelist Salman Rushdie. Moreover, the court directed Matar's lawyers to not give any media interviews. Judge David W. Foley was hearing the case at Chautauqua County Court where Matar, dressed in a black and white uniform, wearing a mask with his hands shackled pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. Matar's public defender Nathaniel Barone moved a motion for the bail which was promptly shot down by the judge who remanded him to the Chautauqua County Jail. Do not talk to media: Judge Foley During the hearing, Barone also asked the judge to do something about the media coverage as it might lead to a prejudiced jury. “He's entitled to a fair trial. He's entitled to due process, no matter what he's accused of,” Barone told the judge. However, the judge refused to accept the request and instead ordered the lawyers representing Matar to not give any interviews. “No speaking to the press until we have resolved this issue,” said Judge Foley. Ever since the stabbing incident, Salman Rushdie has been recovering and recuperating in a Pennsylvania hospital. He is carrying severe wounds which include a damaged liver, severed nerve endings in the arm and an eye that he could very well lose. According to Rushdie's family, the road to recovery might be 'long'. When quizzed whether he acted upon the fatwa issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini 333 years ago, Matar said: "I respect the Ayatollah. I think he's a great person. That's as far as I will say about that. I don't like him [Salman Rushdie] very much," "He's someone who attacked Islam, he attacked their beliefs, the belief systems," Matar added in the video and also said that he had watched YouTube videos of Rushdie. According to a sustainability report published by the Shenzhen-based company on its website, Huawei's headcount went down from the high of 197,000 in 2020 to 195,000 at the end of 2021. The drop in the number of employees comes in the backdrop of the earning reports published last week which painted a not-so-happy picture. According to Huawei, the company's net profit almost halved on a year-on-year basis, dropping by 5.9 per cent. What did Trump do? It is pertinent to note that it was former US President Donald Trump that started the crusade to eject Huawei off the American market. Trump was of the view that Huawei had deep ties with China's state surveillance and that the company was rigging its 5G equipment to act as spy tools for the Politburo. The biggest jolt came when the Trump administration banned Taiwanese chip giant, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, from supplying Huawei with semiconductor chips. Since then, the company's telecom business has never really managed to get back on its pre-sanctions trajectory.
