In the first speech to a joint meeting of Congress by a Japanese leader in nine years,&nbsp;Fumio&nbsp;Kishida&nbsp;urged Americans not to doubt the country's "indispensable" role in world affairs, and said Tokyo was undertaking historic military upgrades to support its ally.

He spoke amid deep divisions in U.S. politics over the country's role on the world stage in a presidential election year, including in the House of Representatives chamber where he gave his address.

President Joe Biden's request for $60 billion in aid for Ukraine, which passed the Democratic-led Senate with 70% support in February, has been stalled in the Republican-controlled House as Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to allow a vote.

"I want to address those Americans who feel the loneliness and exhaustion of being the country that has upheld the international order,"&nbsp;Kishida&nbsp;said.

"The leadership of the United States is indispensable. Without U.S. support, how long before the hopes of Ukraine would collapse under the onslaught from Moscow? Without the presence of the United States, how long before the Indo-Pacific would face even harsher realities?"

Addresses to joint meetings of the Senate and House are an honor generally reserved for the closest U.S. allies, typically no more than once or twice a year. The last was by Israeli President Isaac Herzog on July 19, 2023.

Kishida&nbsp;is only the second Japanese prime minister ever to address a joint meeting, after Shinzo Abe on April 29, 2015.

His remarks were greeted several times by standing ovations, especially as he recounted the years of his childhood spent in New York and close Japanese-U.S. ties.

Kishida&nbsp;said the world was at a "historic turning point," with freedom and democracy under threat, emerging countries holding more economic power and climate change and rapid advances in artificial intelligence disrupting peoples' lives.

<h2>CHINA 'UNPRECEDENTED' CHALLENGE</h2>

He also warned about North Korea's nuclear program and exports of missiles supporting Russia's war in Ukraine. But the biggest challenge the world faces comes from China, he said.

"China's current external stance and military actions present an unprecedented and the greatest strategic challenge, not only to the peace and security of Japan but to the peace and stability of the international community at large,"&nbsp;Kishida&nbsp;said. "Ukraine of today may be East Asia of tomorrow."

Japan has consistently raised concerns about Chinese military activity close to its islands and neighboring Taiwan.

Taiwan, claimed by China as its own territory, has raised its alert level since Russia invaded Ukraine, wary of the possibility Beijing might make a similar move on the island, though it has reported no signs this is about to happen.

To stress the importance of Taiwan, Republican Representative Michael McCaul, chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, brought Taiwan's Representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, as his guest for&nbsp;Kishida's speech.

China's state-run Global Times newspaper said in an editorial this week that Japan and the U.S. were taking a leading role in efforts to "contain and suppress China."

Despite deep-rooted reservations in Japan about its militaristic past,&nbsp;Kishida&nbsp;said the country was embarking on a major shift in its defense posture to support U.S. efforts to ward off current threats.

"Japan has changed over the years. We have transformed ourselves from a reticent ally, recovering from the devastation of World War II, to a strong, committed ally, looking outward to the world," he said.

Japan's pacifist constitution, adopted after its defeat in World War Two, prohibits it waging war or maintaining the means to do so. But successive administrations have chipped away at that restraint, and plans unveiled at the end of 2022 to significantly beef up the military may soon see Japan become the world's third biggest military spender.

Kishida&nbsp;and Biden on Wednesday unveiled plans for military cooperation and projects ranging from missiles to moon landings, strengthening their alliance with an eye on countering China and Russia.

Countries would also be allowed to deport those who cannot provide proof that they require protection. However, they will be provided with support for “reintegration into their home countries,” said the EU Commission.&nbsp;

The package, as per the EU officials, also includes measures to protect asylum seekers from abuse and urges countries to ensure adequate living conditions for them, while strengthening safeguards and guarantees and improving integration processes.&nbsp;

In line with the new rules, asylum seekers must apply for international protection in the EU country they first arrive in and stay there until their application is being considered. “The new framework ensures that EU countries will receive the solidarity needed,” says the Commission.&nbsp;

The pact would also embed “migration in international partnerships to prevent irregular departures and loss of life, fight migrant smuggling, reinforce cooperation on readmission and promote legal pathways,” said the EU.&nbsp;

The passage of the pact was not without its opposition as the proceedings were briefly interrupted by a small but loud group of protesters who wore shirts marked “this pact kills” and shouted “vote no!” reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Wood further said that Chad Daybell even talked about how the children were "possessed". He even&nbsp;"predicted"&nbsp;that his wife Tammy Daybell would die soon.

Meanwhile, Daybell’s attorney John Prior appealed to the jury to look into the facts of the case.

"Don’t be distracted by speculation. Don’t be distracted by guesses or assumptions or hunches. It all comes down to facts and evidence," Prior said, in his opening statement.

In June 2020, Daybell was arrested after the remains of Joshua and Tylee were found by the police on his property in Fremont County, Idaho. The court is likely to continue the trial for the last 10 weeks. &nbsp;

As per the authorities, the stepchildren's remains were hidden by Daybell between September 2019 and June 2020.

In November 2019, a formal search of the two kids started after family members reached out to the authorities since they had not seen or spoken to the kids, said the Rexburg Police Department.

In the middle of the six-by-six section, it looked like there was just a little bit of grass. ... The ERT team began excavating that site. They removed the top layer of soil ... at that point, you could see what appeared to be three large white rocks." &nbsp;

"As soon as they did that you could start to smell the odour, through my training experiences a decomposing body," he added.

Hermosillo added that after digging a bit further, the officials discovered a "small body wrapped in black plastic with duct tape around it."

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranked JNU at 20th position globally for Development Studies. The second-highest ranked university is IIM Ahmedabad, clinching the 22nd position globally, while Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences came at the third position, with the 24th rank in the world.

In total, 69 Indian universities were featured in the ranking of the top 500, with a total of 424 entries in the 2024 QS World University Rankings. It’s interesting to note that 72 per cent of the entries this year are either new to the list, have shown improvement, or have maintained their positions.

The most entries have been filed by the University of Delhi (30 entries), IIT Bombay (28 entries) and IIT Kharagpur (27 entries). IIT Madras this year had 22 entries, of which eight improved, six declined and four remained unchanged.

Sweden has experienced its earliest recorded beginning of what it defines as "summer," with three southern towns reporting average temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) for five consecutive days, announced the country's meteorological service on Thursday (April 11).

"A Swedish weather record was broken on Saturday, April 6, 2024. Each day from April 6th to 10th, the average daily temperature was at least 10 degrees at SMHI's stations in Malmo, Kristianstad and Karlshamn," SMHI said on its website.

"The condition was thereby met for meteorological summer at these three stations," it said.

"This is the earliest arrival date for summer ever observed in Sweden, with statistics that date back to the end of the 1800s," it added.

The previous record occurred in 1906 when the official start of summer was recorded on April 10th.

"Inevitably, as global warming progresses, the likelihood of summer arriving ever earlier increases," SMHI said.

Even though summer has officially begun, much of Sweden was not expected to experience warm weather through the following week, with temperatures predicted to stay in the single digits.
