Three men have been arrested in the UK after five migrants, including a child, died this week trying to cross the Channel from&nbsp;France, police said on Wednesday.

The National Crime Agency said two Sudanese nationals aged 19 and 22, and a South Sudan national, also 22, were detained on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Three men, a woman and a seven-year-old girl lost their lives in the early hours of Tuesday in the sea near the northern French town of Wimereux.

They had been in a packed boat that set off before dawn but whose engine stopped a few hundred metres from the beach.&nbsp;

Several people then fell into the water. About 50 people were rescued and brought ashore but emergency services were unable to resuscitate the five.

The tragedy happened just hours after UK lawmakers approved plans to deport undocumented migrants crossing to Rwanda.

The NCA said the three suspects were arrested on suspicion of "facilitating illegal immigration and entering the UK illegally".

They were taken to a police station in Kent, southeast England, for questioning, it added.

The NCA, which investigates serious, organised and trans-national crime, said it was supporting a French police investigation.

Fifteen people have died this year trying to cross the busy shipping lane from northern&nbsp; France&nbsp;to southern England, according to an AFP tally. That is already more than the 12 who died in the whole of last year.

"This tragic incident once again demonstrates the threat to life posed by these crossings and bring into focus why it is so important to target the criminal gangs involved in organising them," said NCA deputy director of investigations Craig Turner.&nbsp;

"We will do all we can with partners in the UK and&nbsp;France&nbsp;to secure evidence, identify those responsible for this event, and bring them to justice," he added in a statement.

A Russian court on Wednesday ordered one of Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu's deputies to be kept in custody on suspicion of taking bribes, the highest-profile corruption case since President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine in 2022.

Moscow's Basmanny District Court ordered Ivanov to be kept in custody until June 23. Ivanov, 48, was shown in uniform standing in a glass cage in court, frowning slightly, footage released by the court service showed.

"The investigation believes that Ivanov entered into a criminal conspiracy with third parties, teamed up with them in advance to commit an organised crime by an organised group," the court service said.

It said the conspiracy was to receive "property and services on a particularly large scale during contract and sub-contract work for the ministry of defence."

Ivanov, who said he was innocent, faces 15 years in jail if convicted. State media gave the case full coverage.

The sudden arrest of an ally of Shoigu, whom Putin tasked with fighting the war in Ukraine, triggered speculation about a battle within the elite and of a public crackdown on the corruption that has plagued Russia's post-Soviet armed forces.

Some Russian bloggers, who have accused senior generals of incompetence, rejoiced at the apparent fall of a top military official long linked to the ostentatious opulence which Putin has made clear he does not want to see displayed in wartime.

The Kremlin dismissed a Russian report that Ivanov may be suspected of treason as pure speculation.

Ivanov had long been the subject of journalistic investigations. Russia's Anti-Corruption Foundation, headed by the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, had alleged that Ivanov and his family lived a life of luxury including yachts, helicopters, visits to the French Riviera, purchases of diamonds, and a 19th Century mansion in Moscow.

Forbes magazine listed Ivanov as one of the wealthiest men in Russia's security structures. Other investigations alleged corruption in Russia's reconstruction of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol now controlled by Russian forces.

Ivanov was unable to comment as he was in detention. Putin last month ordered the FSB to root out corruption in state defence procurement.

"The graphic layout of the pre-selected recurring purchase option may lead consumers to buy products periodically -- even when there is no actual need -- thereby limiting their ability to choose freely," the AGCM said in a statement.

"Moreover, the conduct implemented by the company was deemed contrary to the standards of professional diligence.&nbsp;

"As a major operator, Amazon is expected to design its online interfaces, particularly those related to purchasing processes, in a manner that allows consumers to make free and informed commercial decisions."

Amazon said it "strongly disagrees" with the ruling, levelled against the Luxembourg-based Amazon Services Europe and Amazon EU, and said it would appeal.

"Every day&nbsp;customers benefit from the Subscribe and Save programme&nbsp;by saving money and time on regular deliveries&nbsp;of&nbsp;items they routinely use," the company said in a statement.&nbsp;

It said customers in&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;have saved more than 40 million euros under the subscription programme.

The watchdog said it had also raised concerns about the pre-selection of the "paid fast delivery" option on the Amazon website.

But it said it proposed no further action after Amazon agreed to pre-select only the free delivery option in future, and also to compensate consumers who complained last year about this conduct.

Iran and Pakistan released a joint statement on Wednesday (Apr 24) urging the United Nations Security Council to take stern action against Israel stating that the country had targeted neighbouring countries and foreign diplomatic facilities "illegally".

The development came following Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's three-day visit to Pakistan amid an escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

"Recognising that the irresponsible act of the Israeli regime forces was a major escalation in an already volatile region, both sides called on the UN Security Council to prevent the Israeli regime from its adventurism in the region and its illegal acts attacking its neighbours...," Iran and Pakistan said in their joint statement released by Pakistan's foreign ministry.

Last week, explosions were reported in Iran's Isfahan, what Tehran said was an Israeli attack.&nbsp;

However, Iran said that it has no plans to retaliate against Israel.&nbsp;

The visit by Raisi was aimed at mending ties between neighbouring countries Iran and Pakistan where the Iranian President vowed to give a push to the trade between both countries by $10 billion a year.

"Both sides agreed to increase the volume of bilateral trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars in the next five years," Sharif's office said in a statement after a joint news briefing.

"They also agreed to cooperate in developing joint approaches to confront common challenges including the threat of terrorism," the statement said.

Russia and Ukraine have agreed in a Qatari-brokered deal to exchange almost 50 children displaced by Moscow's invasion, the Kremlin's children's rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova announced in Doha Wednesday.

Moscow has been accused of forcibly taking Ukrainian children into Russian territory during its full-scale offensive, with Lvova-Belova wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges related to those allegations.

"For the first time in a face-to-face format, we held talks with the Ukrainian side. Twenty-nine children are due to go to Ukraine and 19 to Russia," Lvova-Belova announced.

She gave no details on why the children were in Russian hands or where they had come from.&nbsp;

Ukraine believes Russia has illegally taken more than 19,000 of its children since the start of the 2022 invasion, of which fewer than 400 have been returned.

Moscow denies that charge, saying that it has transferred children for their safety away from fighting zones.&nbsp;

The fate of the children has been highly sensitive in Ukraine since the war began two years ago.

Some of the children's parents were killed, while others were separated from carers by the fast-moving front lines at the start of the invasion.&nbsp;

Russia and Ukraine to exchange displaced children after Qatar-brokered deal

Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said on Wednesday (Apr 24) that the forces are carrying out "offensive action" across southern Lebanon. In a video statement, Gallant said, "Many forces are deployed on the border and IDF (army) forces are carrying out offensive action currently throughout southern Lebanon."&nbsp;

The defence minister also claimed that "half of Hezbollah's commanders in southern Lebanon have been eliminated" in months of violence and further said the "other half are in hiding and abandoning the field to IDF operations".&nbsp;

He didn't reveal exact numbers and also didn't specify whether or not ground troops had crossed the border.&nbsp;

Separately, Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said in a post on social media platform X that 40 Hezbollah "terrorist" targets were struck, including storage facilities, weaponry and additional terror infrastructures used by the militant group in the region. As per reports, the targets linked to Hezbollah fighters around Ayta ash Shab.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said Israel had carried out more than 13 strikes near Aita al-Shaab and surrounding villages.&nbsp;

A Ukrainian intelligence source on Wednesday (Apr 24) said that drones sent by Ukraine's SBU security service struck two Rosneft-owned oil depots in Russia's Smolensk region in an overnight attack.&nbsp;

The news agency Reuters reported citing a source that the depots contained 26,000 cubic metres of fuel and that the attack caused major fires and evacuation of personnel.&nbsp;

"The SBU continues to effectively destroy military infrastructure and logistics that provide fuel to the Russian army in Ukraine. These facilities are and will remain our absolutely legitimate targets," the source said.&nbsp;

The news agency said that the emergency services worked on sites and some residents were evacuated from parts of Lipetsk in Russia's southwest. Russian regional officials said earlier that fires had broken out at the facilities in the aftermath of the drone attack.&nbsp;

Vasily Anokhin, who is the governor of the Smolensk region, said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app that there were no casualties reported in the attack. &nbsp;

At least 21 people perished in a new migrant boat disaster off the coast of Djibouti, the UN's migration agency said Tuesday.

It was the second fatal maritime accident in two weeks off the Horn of Africa nation, which lies on the perilous so-called Eastern Migration Route from Africa to the Middle East.

Another vessel carrying mainly Ethiopian migrants sank in the same area on April 8, claiming the lives of several dozen people.

The International Organization for Migration's chief of mission in Djibouti, Tanja Pacifico, told AFP in Nairobi that 21 bodies had been recovered, while 23 people were still missing.

Another 33 people survived the disaster, she said late Tuesday.

"Tragedy as boat capsizes off Djibouti coast with 77 migrants on board including children," the IOM had said in an earlier post on X, giving a toll of at least 16 dead and 28 missing.

It said the Djibouti IOM branch was "supporting local authorities with search and rescue effort".

Yvonne Ndege, a spokeswoman for the agency, told AFP the fatalities included children and a baby, without offering further details.

Ethiopia's ambassador to Djibouti, Berhanu Tsegaye, said on X that the vessel was carrying Ethiopian migrants from Yemen when it went down on Monday night off Godoria in northeastern Djibouti.

He said 33 people, including one woman, survived.

Berhanu expressed his "deep sorrow... over the succession of horrific disasters", adding: "I reiterate that legal measures should be taken against illegal human smugglers who put the lives of our citizens at risk."

Another vessel carrying more than 60 people sank off the coast of Godoria on April 8, according to the IOM and the Ethiopian embassy in Djibouti.

The IOM said at the time that the bodies of 38 migrants, including children, were recovered, while another six people were missing.

The Ethiopian embassy had said the boat was carrying Ethiopian migrants from Djibouti to war-torn Yemen.

<h2>'Life-threatening'</h2>

Each year, many tens of thousands of African migrants brave the "Eastern Route" across the Red Sea and through Yemen to try to reach oil-rich Saudi Arabia, escaping conflict or natural disaster, or seeking better economic opportunities.

"On their journeys, many face life-threatening dangers including starvation, health risks and exploitation -– at the hands of human traffickers and other criminals," the IOM said in February.

In November, a shipwreck off the shores of Yemen left 64 migrants missing, presumed dead at sea, the agency said.

Ndege said the IOM's data from 2023 showed that "the number of people trying to cross is on the rise".

According to the agency, Ethiopians make up 79 percent of the roughly 100,000 migrants who arrived in Yemen last year from Djibouti or Somalia, the remainder being Somalis.

Africa's second most populous country, Ethiopia is blighted by various conflicts and several regions have suffered from severe drought in recent years.

More than 15 percent of its 120 million inhabitants depend on food aid.

In February, the IOM said that according to its Missing Migrants Project at least 698 people, including women and children, had died crossing the Gulf of Aden from Djibouti to Yemen last year.

In August, Human Rights Watch accused Saudi border guards of killing "at least hundreds" of Ethiopians trying to cross into the Gulf kingdom from Yemen between March 2022 and June 2023, using explosive weapons in some cases.

Riyadh dismissed the group's findings as "unfounded and not based on reliable sources".

Now, the city has said that the collapse was caused by the owner's "carelessness, negligence, gross negligence, and recklessness, and as a result of the unseaworthiness" of the ship.&nbsp;

As quoted in reports, the attorneys representing the Baltimore mayor and city council argued in a federal lawsuit: "None of this should have happened."&nbsp;

As per Baltimore officials, "alarms showing an inconsistent power supply on the Dali had sounded" before leaving port. The documents allege, "The Dali left port anyway, despite its clearly unseaworthy condition."&nbsp;

The lawsuit further alleged that the ship had an "incompetent crew" on board who "failed to comply with local navigation customs". It claimed that the crew lacked proper skill and training.&nbsp;

Over 400 police officers executed 13 search warrants in southwest Sydney because they believed the suspects presented a threat. Deputy Commissioner David Hudson of the New South Wales Police Department told reporters, "We will allege that these individuals adhered to a religiously motivated, violent extremist ideology."

The arrests follow a recent knife attack at a Sydney church, which led to terrorism charges against a 16-year-old. The teen allegedly spoke in Arabic about the Prophet Muhammad being disrespected following the stabbing of Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and Reverend Isaac Royel at Christ the Good Shepherd Church, which was being broadcast live online during a service.&nbsp;

ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess said, "Australia's security service is always doing its thing to provide security intelligence that enables the police to deal with these problems when we have immediate threats to life or anything else that's evolving," Burgess said.
