Over the years, Russia, which occupies about 20 per cent of Georgia’s internationally recognised territory, has used similar legislation to crack down on NGOs and independent news media who are critical of the Kremlin.&nbsp;

Riot police in the country armed with water cannons and teargas have been accused of beating protesters who picketed outside Georgia’s parliament, on Monday (May 13) morning to try and stop a final vote.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On May 12, several thousand protesters staged an all-night rally outside parliament but failed to prevent lawmakers from entering the parliament after the MPs managed to access the building from the back and pushed the bill through a parliamentary legal committee in less than two minutes.&nbsp;

The critics of the bill and many protesters, as per AFP, said that they see the bill as a symbol of their government’s wider drift towards Russia.&nbsp;

Georgia’s Interior Ministry said that at least 20 people, including two American citizens and one Russian national, were detained during the rallies, earlier this month.&nbsp;

The country’s Special Investigation Service, which investigates allegations of police brutality said they&nbsp;have opened a case into claims of use of excessive force by police personnel&nbsp;during the protests on May 13 and 14.&nbsp;

<h2>Criticism at home and abroad</h2>

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, on May 13 vowed to&nbsp;pass the bill claiming that the law enjoyed wide support in the country.&nbsp;

However, mass protests continued on Tuesday (May 28) exactly two weeks after the bill was first adopted. The crowd gathered outside the parliament&nbsp;was shouting&nbsp;“Russian slaves!” during the vote.&nbsp;

Leader of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party, Tina Bokuchava,&nbsp;called on the opposition parties to rally together to rescind the legislation before the elections after the presidential veto was overturned.&nbsp;

Bokuchava also voiced her concerns about the upcoming elections saying&nbsp;that the law could be used by authorities to throw a shroud over the election process.

"Georgian Dream understands that it would lose power should the elections be free and fair, and Georgia's vibrant civil sector can act against electoral violations," said the UNM leader as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;

Parliamentary elections in the country are scheduled to be held on October 26.&nbsp;

Less than 10 days after the legislation was first passed,&nbsp;the United States announced travel sanctions against Georgian officials “who are responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Georgia.” The move has since been criticised by Tbilisi.&nbsp;

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said that he “deeply regrets” the Georgian parliament’s adoption of the controversial legislation, on Tuesday (May 28)&nbsp;and warned that it would affect the country’s efforts to join the 27-nation bloc.&nbsp;

The US&nbsp;State Department spokesman Matthew Miller after the presidential veto was overridden called the bill "anti-democratic" and said&nbsp;that it "fails to conform to European norms." He added,&nbsp;"The United States condemns this action."&nbsp;

After the legislation was adopted, ministers from European nations and the three Baltic countries, in separate statements, also&nbsp;criticised the decision.

To stabilise Haiti amid the ongoing turmoil and gang violence, the Transitional Presidential Council has appointed former Prime Minister Garry Conille to lead the government during the transition period, reports said citing council president Edgard Leblanc Fils announced on Tuesday.

The Transitional Council is now mandated to hold elections by February 7, 2026, as per Haiti's constitution. The council's decision to install Conille as interim prime minister came after a 6-1 vote, a council member told Reuters news agency.

Edgard Leblanc Fils, acting as de facto president, emphasised the thorough selection process.

"Conille was chosen by consensus after the council conducted hearings of candidates," he said.

Conille's appointment comes as Haiti struggles to restore stability and reclaim control from violent gangs.

At the Manhattan courthouse, lawyers for former US President Donald Trump and state prosecutors presented their closing arguments to jurors in the hush money trial on Tuesday (May 28).&nbsp;Now, the jury will soon deliberate whether Trump will become the first former US president convicted of a crime as he faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Urging jurors to remain impartial, Blanche concluded, “This is not a referendum on the ballot box—who you voted for in 2016 or 2020, who you plan on voting for in 2024. That is not what this is about.”

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass spent over five hours detailing the case against Trump, pointing out that the former president attempted to 'hoodwink voters'.&nbsp;

He characterised his actions as a deliberate conspiracy to deceive voters during the 2016 election. Steinglass argued that Trump orchestrated an elaborate scheme to conceal payments which involved a series of events aimed at manipulating and defrauding voters.

“Trump’s intent to defraud could not be any clearer,” Steinglass said.

He also pointed out that a direct payment to Daniels would have been simpler but less effective in hiding the affair.

He argued that the scheme was “cloaked in lies" and it benefitted Trump above all others.

“The name of the game was concealment and all roads lead inescapably to the man who benefited the most: the defendant, former president Donald Trump.”

Addressing the jury, Steinglass invoked Trump’s own words, saying, “Donald Trump can’t shoot someone on Fifth Avenue at rush hour and get away with it.” However, this remark by the prosecution drew an objection from Blanche.&nbsp;

Steinglass also reviewed other “catch-and-kill” schemes linked to Trump, including that by National Enquirer&nbsp;publisher David Pecker.&nbsp;

Countering the defence’s portrayal of the hush money as a move to protect Trump’s family, Steinglass noted the timing of the payment in 2016, 10 years after the alleged affair.

“The defendant’s primary concern was not his family but the election,” he said.

Oscar winner actor Robert De Niro, 80, was also present on behalf of the Biden campaign outside the courthouse. De Niro, calling Trump "a clown," expressed his connection to downtown New York City and said the former US president does not belong there. This marked the Biden campaign's first clear involvement in Trump's legal issues.

If the ANC wins fewer than 201 seats, Ramaphosa would have to negotiate with opposition parties and independent MPs to secure a majority and return to government headquarters in Pretoria.&nbsp;

It could face stark choices.&nbsp;

On the right, it is beset by the Democratic Alliance (DA), which has vowed to "Rescue South Africa" through clean governance, privatisation and deregulation.&nbsp;

The jury is set to hear the closing arguments from the prosecution and the former president’s lawyers on the charges stemming from $130,000 in hush money allegedly paid to the adult film actress, Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.&nbsp;

Before entering the court, the former president spoke to reporters and read quotes from political and legal commentators who have criticised the case, something that Trump has done regularly amid the six-week trial.&nbsp;

He also called Judge Juan Merchan “corrupt” and “conflicted” but said he couldn’t speak about it because of the gag order.

“We’ll see how it goes. This is a very dangerous day for America. It’s a very sad day,” said Trump while entering the court with three of his children – Don Jr, Eric and Tiffany.&nbsp;

Earlier this month Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, took the witness stand in the Manhattan court and detailed her alleged sexual encounter with Trump and testified that she was given a $130,000 hush money payment ahead of the 2016 presidential election.&nbsp;

Blanche was making his final bid to influence the 12 jurors who decide whether Trump, 77, will become the first US president to be convicted of a crime. The former president has been accused of illegally falsifying records to cover up the hush payment.&nbsp;

During his statement, Balanche also asked jurors not to rely on Daniels’ or Trump’s former lawyer and fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen’s testimonies. Both of them were the prosecution’s key witnesses in the case.&nbsp;

After Trump's lawyer was done with his statement, judge Merchan scolded&nbsp;Blanche for his&nbsp;comment asking jurors not to send Trump to prison on Cohen's words.&nbsp;

Steinglass also attempted&nbsp;to rebuff Trump's lawyer's efforts to discredit Cohen's testimony saying his&nbsp;past dishonesty should be taken into account but his anger is also&nbsp;understandable given that, “To date, he’s the only one that’s paid the price for his role in this conspiracy.”

The prosecutor also pointed to other testimonies reminding the jury that Cohen was not the one on trial and&nbsp;accused the defence of wanting to make this case all about Trump's former lawyer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cohen testified that as Trump’s fixer, he handled the payment to Daniels and that Trump approved the cover-up.

If found guilty, the former president faces up to four years in prison. However, imprisonment is unlikely for a first-time felon convicted of such a crime.

It simply means that Harvard would no longer issue official statements of empathy. The University issued such statements for Ukraine when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the 'special military operation' against Ukraine. It also issued a statement for the victims of the October 7 Hamas attacks in Israel.

The university’s Institutional Voice Working Group, made up of eight faculty members, issued the report, with a set of principles and a recommended path forward, which the administration and governing board accepted.

United Flight 2091 was all set to fly to Seattle at around 2 pm when its engine burst into flames on the taxiway forcing 148 passengers and five crew members to evacuate&nbsp;Airbus 320, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and United Airlines said in separate statements.

The video shot by a passenger from inside the plane showed thick smoke coming from one of the wings as the aircraft drove on the tarmac.

He said that in addition, the government will request for financing for the border wall from the European Union. The project is scheduled to begin this year and be finished by 2028.

Poland unveils ‘East Shield’: Massive defence barrier to fortify borders with Russia and Belarus

Finland has been experiencing unusually warm weather this May, prompting the Meteorological Institute to issue a heat warning on Monday.

Temperatures across large parts of the Nordic nation, the north of which lies above the Arctic Circle, are due to surge above 27C (81 F) starting on Tuesday (May 28), the institute said.

"This is probably the first time ever we have issued a heatwave warning in May", Iiris Viljamaa from the Finnish Meteorological Institute told AFP, adding that such alerts were normally issued in June at the earliest.

Scientists say that recurring heatwaves are a clear marker of global warming and that these heatwaves are set to become more frequent, longer and more intense.

"The Finnish climate has always seen changes in weather but now climate change is enhancing these kinds of weather phenomena," meteorologist Leena Laakso told AFP.

Research shows "extreme weather events will increase due to climate change," she said.

According to Laakso, the current temperatures were around 10C above average temperatures for May.&nbsp;

The Finnish warning is aimed at alerting people about increased health risks associated with daytime temperatures reaching 27C.&nbsp;

On Monday, temperatures between 24 and 28C were recorded, due to a high pressure system over the country, combined with a warm, dry air mass flowing from the south.&nbsp;

Twelve days in May had already exceeded 25 degrees, Viljamaa said.&nbsp;

The town of Salo in southwestern Finland on Saturday registered the country's highest temperature of the year so far, at 28.8C.&nbsp;

The video shifts right, left and down as the horrifying tornado wildly rocks the car. “The car, we’re in it (the tornado), Brenda,” Gill yells, with the movement making the video blurry. “I can’t do anything.”

“Cover your head,” a distressed Dance says. “Cover your head.”

The clamour of the wind in the video is frightening, and power flashes light up the roadway with the power poles being disassembled. “It’s got my car, I know,” Gill says. “We’re still shaking, my ears are popping.”

The wind then seems to become slightly slower, but still loud enough to scare the women. “Okay, okay,” Gill said, sounding terrified. “I don’t want to go anywhere yet. I’m shaking, the car’s still shaking.”

In the background, one can hear the sirens or emergency vehicles. When a car pulls around them, a power line can be seen down across the street. As the car drives away, one of them says, shocked, “Are they going?”

This was terrifying seeing your life literally flash before your eyes.... we made it out alive and across the highway was a lot worse.”

Dance has launched a GoFundMe to raise money for Gill’s car repairs. “We came face to face with the tornado. She is disabled and only has the minimum liability on her car due to being on fixed income,” the page reads.

Georgia’s parliament on Tuesday (May 28) adopted the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-georgia-to-pass-foreign-agents-bill-amid-protests-what-is-it-about-721338">highly controversial “foreign agents” legislation</a>, which has sparked weeks of protests and drawn international condemnation after overriding a veto by President Salome Zurabishvili who, among many others has called the law authoritarian and Russian-inspired.&nbsp;

<h2>Presidential veto overridden</h2>

Lawmakers voted 84 to four to pass the bill after overriding the presidential veto. The move came as thousands had gathered outside Georgia’s parliament to protest the passage. Meanwhile, most of the opposition members walked out of the chamber ahead of the vote.

According to AFP, tensions were high in the parliament ahead of the vote with Opposition lawmaker Giorgi Vashadze doused with water as he gave a speech. The veto was overridden <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/georgian-parliament-rejects-presidential-veto-of-foreign-agents-legislation-pm-prez-lash-out-at-each-other-725966">a day after</a> parliament’s judiciary committee had rejected it.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, several countries in Europe as well as the European Union criticised the decision as the legislation threatens the country’s bid to join the 27-nation bloc.&nbsp;

On May 14, Georgia’s parliament adopted the highly controversial “foreign agents” bill, despite weeks of, often violent, protests with many including the country’s president calling it similar to a Russian law used by Moscow to crack down on NGOs and independent news media who are critical of the Kremlin.&nbsp;

The so-called “foreign agents” law now requires organisations, including media outlets, nonprofits and other NGOs receiving more than 20 per cent of their funding from abroad to register as bodies “pursuing the interests of a foreign power.”&nbsp;

Zourabichvili, who is among the critics of the bill, vetoed the legislation days after it was passed in parliament by lawmakers of the ruling Georgian Dream party and its allies.&nbsp;

Ahead of the vote, thousands of demonstrators had gathered outside the parliament to protest the legislation. “Russian slaves!” the crowd was shouting during the vote, as per AFP.&nbsp;

Georgia has witnessed a wave of unprecedented protests for the past seven weeks or so after the Georgian Dream party revived the plans to adopt so-called Russian-inspired measures it had dropped last year after public outcry.&nbsp;

“I think we were all expecting this outcome, but I feel so angry, I feel so frustrated. The most important thing right now is to not lose hope,” protester Lizi Kenchoshvili, 23, told AFP outside parliament minutes after the vote.&nbsp;

A video reportedly shot outside the Georgian parliament also shows Opposition MPs on a stage reading out the names of the 84 lawmakers who voted in favour of the Russian-inspired law. The crowd can be heard whistling and booing as the names are read out.&nbsp;

At one point Georgia’s interior ministry took to X and asked protesters to allow members of the parliament to leave the building “without interruption.”

Leader of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party, Tina Bokuchava, called on the opposition parties to rally together to rescind the legislation before the elections.&nbsp;

Parliamentary elections in the country are scheduled to be held on October 26.&nbsp;

<h2>International criticism</h2>

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said that he “deeply regrets” the Georgian parliament’s adoption of the controversial legislation and warned that it would affect the country’s efforts to join the 27-nation bloc.&nbsp;

“The EU and its member states are considering all options to react to these developments,” said Borrell, in a statement. A report by Reuters citing a poll also said that Georgia’s 3.7 million people back EU accession.&nbsp;

Last week, the United States announced travel sanctions against Georgian officials “who are responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Georgia.” The move has since been criticised by Tbilisi.&nbsp;

After the legislation was adopted, ministers from European nations and the three Baltic countries, in separate statements,&nbsp;criticised the decision.&nbsp;

Michael Roth, chair of the German Bundestag’s foreign affairs committee said it’s “a sad day for Georgia and Europe”. He also called on Georgians not to give up.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Danish foreign minister Lars Rasmussen warned that unless the ruling party changes its course “Georgia will not advance on path to EU membership.”
