At least 24 Palestinians were killed in three separate airstrikes launched by Israeli forces on the Gaza City early on Tuesday (June 25).

According to the Gaza health officials and medics, one of the deceased was Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh's sister.

The Israeli air offensive also targeted two schools in the Gaza city that were sheltering internally displaced people. This claimed the lives of at least 14 people, said the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the strikes were aimed at "terrorists operating inside two structures" and that the targets were "terrorists involved in holding hostages.”&nbsp;

IDF released a statement saying that the "aerial surveillance checks, precise munitions, and additional intelligence measures were all used in order to mitigate harm to civilians."

Israel also bombarded a house in the Shati (Beach) refugee camp killing 10 people.

The house reportedly belonged to the Hamas leader's extended family.

"They were 10 individuals, three of them were scattered outside the house and seven under the rubble - with no prior warning, with people around them, and there are injuries among the neighbours," Hassan Kaskin, a neighbour, told news agency Reuters.

<h2>'Intense phase of Gaza war winding down,' says Netanyahu</h2>

This comes two days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a TV interview said that the "intense phase" of the Gaza war was "winding down".

He stressed that the war would continue until the Hamas group no longer controlled the besieged Palestinian enclave.

In his first TV interview since Hamas' Oct 7 assault, Netanyahu on Sunday (June 23) stated that once the intense phase comes to an end, the Israeli forces would be deployed along the northern border with Lebanon, where the fighting with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group has intensified.

"The intense phase of the fighting against Hamas is about to end," Netanyahu said in an interview with Israel's Channel 14.

He then said that the aim was to "uproot the Hamas regime in Gaza," rejecting the Palestinian militant group's demand for a complete ceasefire.

Senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk has asked Russia to act as a guarantor for a future ceasefire agreement with Israel.&nbsp;

Following a meeting in Moscow on Monday (June 24) night, he pledged to secure the release of the remaining Russian hostages from Gaza.

Marzouk, who is the head of Hamas’ foreign relations, met Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov in the Russian capital. The two discussed the war in Gaza as well as efforts to achieve Palestinian unity, Hamas said in a statement.

“We still insist that Russia be the guarantor of such a ceasefire agreement because obviously the United States is on the side of Israel,” said Marzouk.&nbsp;

“Russia’s position is fairer, more acceptable to all sides, and it is ready to act in this direction. We want to put an end to the domination of the United States and its one-sided influence on the Palestinian issue,” he added.

Notably, in recent weeks, the United States has been pushing for a ceasefire, though no agreement has been reached yet.

Marzouk informed the Russian&nbsp;news agency RIA Novosti that the two Russian citizens being held captive in Gaza will be&nbsp;first released in any ceasefire agreement with Israel.

According to Israeli media, Alexander Lobanov and Alexander Trufanov are the two Russian-Israeli hostages that are still in Gaza. Trufanov is being held by Islamic Jihad, another armed group in Gaza and an ally of Hamas.

In November as part of an agreement with the Kremlin, Hamas released three Russian citizen hostages from Gaza.

Reports citing flight data showed the aircraft departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 18:17 pm local time on Monday (June 24) evening.

The Boeing 777-200ER had climbed to an altitude of 40,000 feet for the northbound flight to Bangkok, before the pilots declared an emergency while the plane was still flying over the Malaysian peninsula.

In his first TV interview since Hamas' Oct 7 assault, Netanyahu on Sunday (June 23) stated that once the intense phase comes to an end, the Israeli forces would be deployed along the northern border with Lebanon, where the fighting with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group has intensified.

"The intense phase of the fighting against Hamas is about to end," Netanyahu said in an interview with Israel's Channel 14.

"This doesn't mean that the war is about to end, but the war in its intense phase is about to end in Rafah," he said.

He then said that the aim was to "uproot the Hamas regime in Gaza," rejecting the Palestinian militant group's demand for a complete ceasefire.

Netanyahu further stated that Israel would return its displaced citizens to their evacuated northern border communities amid fears of a full-scale war in Lebanon.

"After the intense phase is finished, we will have the possibility to move part of the forces north. And we will do this. First and foremost for defensive purposes. And secondly, to bring our (evacuated) residents home," the Israeli PM stated.

"If we can we will do this diplomatically. If not, we will do it another way. But we will bring (the residents) home," he added.

On being asked about the post-war scenarios in Gaza, Netanyahu said Israel would maintain "military control in the foreseeable future" but that "we also want to create a civilian administration, if possible with local Palestinians" and regional backing.

<h2>Hamas slams Netanyahu</h2>

Hamas hit out at the Israeli prime minister stating that his remarks were a "clear confirmation of his rejection of the recent (UN) Security Council resolution and the proposal of US President Joe Biden," who called for the release of hostages and a truce deal.

The Palestinian militant group then stated that any such agreement must include a permanent ceasefire and a complete Israeli withdrawal in order to stop what it termed "Netanyahu's attempts to evade, deceive and perpetuate the aggression and war of extermination against our people".&nbsp;

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has withdrawn Conservative Party support for two parliamentary candidates who are under investigation by the Gambling Commission over allegations of betting on the date of the upcoming general election.

The two candidates, Craig Williams from Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr, and Laura Saunders from Bristol North West, are facing scrutiny, for potentially using confidential information to place bets on the election date.

The Labour Party has also suspended one of its general election candidates. Kevin Craig, Labour's candidate for the Central Suffolk and North Ipswich constituency, has been "administratively" suspended by the party pending the outcome of the Gambling Commission's probe.

The Conservative party said, “As a result of ongoing internal inquiries, we have concluded that we can no longer support Craig Williams or Laura Saunders as parliamentary candidates at the forthcoming general election."

“We have checked with the Gambling Commission that this decision does not compromise the investigation that they are conducting, which is rightly independent and ongoing.”

As the nomination process has already concluded, the two candidates will still be listed on the ballot papers as representing the Conservative Party. However, they no longer have the official backing and endorsement of the party leadership.

Assange landed at a Bangkok airport on Tuesday afternoon for refuelling. The news agency AFP said that its journalists saw Assange's slight touchdown at Bangkok's Don Mueang airport at around 12:30 pm (0530 GMT).&nbsp;

A senior Thai official told AFP that Assange's name was on the passenger list.

"(The plane) is expected to refuel and resupply with water before departing at 9:00 pm for Saipan island," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.&nbsp;

Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he wanted Assange brought back home to Australia as soon as possible.&nbsp;

"Regardless of the views that people have about Mr Assange (and) his activities, the case has dragged on for too long," Albanese said in the country's parliament.

"There is nothing to be gained by his continued incarceration and we want him brought home to Australia."
