Hezbollah, in a statement, said it launched "explosive drones" at eight Israeli military positions&nbsp;"as part of the response to the attack and the assassination carried out by the enemy" in southern Lebanon's Tyre area on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The group further added that its fighters "carried out an aerial attack with a squadron of explosive drones" targeting Israeli bases across the border area including in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.&nbsp;

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that the Iron Dome took down several of the missiles and fighter jets. It added that ground-based air defence systems intercepted the majority of the drones.&nbsp;

Bruce Lehrmann has been ordered to stand trial on charges of rape. The 29-year-old is accused of committing two counts of rape in Toowoomba, located west of Brisbane, in October 2021.

Magistrate Mark Howden, found sufficient grounds to commit Lehrmann to trial on Thursday (July 4), refusing his argument that he had no case to answer.

“Based on the available evidence, I believe there is enough to convince a jury that the defendant is guilty, assuming they receive proper instructions,” Howden said.

The Toowoomba district court will hear the trial at a date yet to be set.

Prior to Howden’s ruling, a crowded courtroom was presented with details that were mutually agreed upon by Lehrmann’s barrister, Andrew Hoare KC, and the prosecutor, Nicole Friedewald, concerning the events of the night and the morning after&nbsp;October 9, 2021.

Lehrmann and the complainant, who cannot legally be named, agreed to meet at a strip club after both had been drinking alcohol and the complainant had taken cocaine.&nbsp;

They both proceeded to use cocaine together, and in the early hours of the morning, they took a taxi to a residence in Toowoomba where Lehrmann's schoolmate lived. There, they engaged in consensual sexual activity.

However, the complainant claims she woke up to see Lehrmann on top&nbsp;penetrating her without a condom, despite her having insisted upon contraception during their earlier consensual encounter.

She also alleged she pulled her body away and told him to ‘stop’ but Lehrmann instead climbed back on top of her saying, “it’s OK, it’s OK,” continuing the unwanted sex.

Later, she would tell the police, "I did not consent to him penetrating me. I wasn't laying there enthusiastically. I was so in my head, I was in shock."

The complainant went to police 20 days later.

The court was informed that she made her formal complaint after seeing news coverage of the allegations by Brittany Higgins that Lehrmann raped her in parliament house.

Prosecutor Nicole Friedewald submitted that Lehrmann had done nothing to ascertain if the complainant was consenting.

"He was consoling her throughout that act, saying 'it's okay, it's okay'," Friedewald told the court.

Lehrmann's defence further submitted that she had not mentioned the alleged rapes at two doctor appointments, where she discussed an unrelated WorkCover claim and later had a test for sexually transmitted diseases.

Defence lawyer Hoare said, there was an absence of any complaint about sexual assault and that it was only after a conversation with a female friend who suggested sexual assault, that a police complaint was made.

He said "prior to speaking to the police" the complainant had met a civil lawyer and a criminal lawyer.

Magistrate’s decision

Magistrate Mark Howden said, that after considering all these factors, he believed there was enough evidence to establish a prima facie case against Lehrmann. He also noted that the reliability of the complainant's evidence would be determined by a fact finder, whether it be a judge sitting alone or a jury.

Howden formally charged Lehrmann with two counts of rape and asked if he had anything he wished to say in relation to the two charges.

An American woman was among at least 18 staff of non-governmental organisation International Assistance Mission (IAM) detained on accusations of carrying out Christian missionary work.

The UN in June warned Corbett's "life could be at risk" and called for&nbsp;Taliban&nbsp;authorities to give him "immediate access to medical treatment for his deteriorating health".

Dozens of foreigners have been detained by the&nbsp;Taliban&nbsp;authorities since the group's return to power in August 2021.

Many countries, including the United States, warn against citizens travelling to Afghanistan, citing risks of wrongful detention, violence and kidnapping.&nbsp;

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization consists of nine members. The six founding nations, are China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic and Uzbekistan. Three new members were added, India, Pakistan and Iran. Along with that Afghanistan, Mongolia and Belarus are observer nations and there are 14 other dialogue partners.&nbsp;

The SCO was founded in Shanghai in 2001. India was initially an observer nation back in 2005 before it got the status of a permanent member nation in 2017 along with Pakistan.&nbsp;

This year, the summit is being held under the presidency of Kazakhstan as it is currently the chair of the bloc.&nbsp;The 23rd SCO summit took place last year and was hosted by India virtually.&nbsp;

The Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that while 50 per cent of the voters backed Obama's candidacy, support for Trump hovered around just below 40 per cent. 11 per cent of the voters said they wouldn't vote, vote for another candidate or didn't know.

Amid doubts swirling around US President Joe Biden continuing in the race to win the presidential election to be held later this year, Democratic governors offered their continued support to him following a meeting with him. Informing about the same, Maryland Governor Wes Moore said Wednesday, "We said that we would stand with him." The governors had gathered to discuss his recent disastrous debate performance.&nbsp;

Moore was at the White House along with 24 other Democratic governors, with Vice President Kamala Harris also present at the meeting. Only 10 of the 24 governors met Biden in person. Moore further told reporters that Biden was "fit for office".

Notably, the 81-year-old president has been facing backlash from different quarters with some even calling for him to drop out of the presidential race.&nbsp;

While 10 of them were there in the room with Biden and Harris, the scene after the meeting in the White House lawns looked a bit jagged as only three of the governors met with the reporters.&nbsp;

"The governors have his back, and we're working together just to make it very, very clear on that − a path to victory in November is the No. 1 priority, and that's the No. 1 priority for the president," said Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association.

Gavin Newsom of California, who met Biden but did not speak to the reporters, later posted on X, "I heard three words from the President tonight - he’s all in. And so am I. Joe Biden's had our back. Now it’s time to have his."

In a historic first, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday (July 3)&nbsp;appointed Lieutenant-General Jennie Carignan as the country's top soldier, in charge of leading the military. This appointment is in line with Trudeau's continuing push to appoint women to the most senior jobs.

<h2>Who is Jennie Carignan?</h2>

Lieutenant-General Carignan will take over as the chief of defence on July 18 and has been tasked with stamping out ingrained sexism and misconduct in the armed forces.

A damning 2022 external report described the Canadian Armed Forces as "hostile to women... (and) conducive to more serious incidents of sexual harassment and assault."

She will be promoted to the rank&nbsp;of General and will take over from retiring General Wayne Eyre.

Carignan is a highly decorated soldier and the mother of four children, two of whom, like her, are soldiers in the Canadian Armed Forces.

A female teacher in the United Kingdom&nbsp;was sentenced to&nbsp;six-and-a-half years in prison by the Manchester Crown Court for having sex with two schoolboys and getting pregnant by one of them.

The teacher, identified as Rebecca Joynes, groomed the two boys from the age of 15 after first interacting with them on social media, said the court.&nbsp;

Earlier, the 30-year-old teacher was convicted of four counts of sexual activity with a child as well as two counts of sexual activity with another child.

She was crying in the dock when the court pronounced the imprisonment.

"I questioned if I was right to give statements about the woman who was carrying my child, since then I have replayed a lot of things in my head, and spoken to a lot of people, and it has made me realise the full extent of the abuse carried out on me and the tactics that were used to do so," he said.

"I was coerced, controlled, manipulated, sexually abused, and mentally abused," the boy said.&nbsp;

The boy, who dropped out of the school, said the abuse "tore my family apart" and they have been struggling to come to terms with the horrific incident.
