South Korea's Constitutional Court ruled on Thursday that much of the country's climate goals were unconstitutional, handing a landmark victory to young environmental activists, who wept for joy on the court steps.

The first such case in Asia, brought by children and teenagers who named an embryo as a lead plaintiff, claimed that South Korea's legally binding climate commitments were insufficient and unmet, violating their constitutionally guaranteed human rights.

"Just now, the Constitutional Court ruled that it is unconstitutional that there is no government goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from 2031 to 2050," Yoon Hyeon-jeong, one of the young activists involved, said.&nbsp;

"It was ruled that our right to live a safe life from the climate crisis should be guaranteed," she added, barely managing to finish her sentence as she choked up with tears.

The court ruled that the government's limited climate targets violate the constitution as they do "not sufficiently protect the basic rights of the people," the legal representatives of the plaintiffs said after the hearing.

The case, known as "Woodpecker et al. v. South Korea" after the in-utero nickname of an embryo, now a toddler, involved -- included four petitions by children.

In 2021, South Korea made a legally binding commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 290 million tonnes by 2030,&nbsp;and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

To meet this goal, the country needs to reduce emissions by 5.4 per cent every year from 2023,&nbsp;a target they have so far failed to meet.

As a result of the ruling, Seoul will now have to revise its climate goals, said Youn Se-jong, a lawyer for the plaintiffs

"The National Assembly and the government of the Republic of Korea will have to revise regulations related to the Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality and present greenhouse gas reduction goals considering the rights of future generations," Youn said.

"With today's ruling, we have confirmed that climate change is a matter of our fundamental rights and that everyone has the right to be safe from it," he said.

The plaintiffs had argued that unless Seoul moved more quickly on climate goals, future generations would not only have to live in a degraded environment, but also have to bear the burden of undertaking massive greenhouse gas reductions.&nbsp;

This, the case claims, would mean that the state has violated its duty to protect their fundamental rights.

Similar climate cases globally have found success.&nbsp;

A youth-led effort recently succeeded in the US state of Montana, while another is being heard at the European Higher Court.

In Germany, in 2021 climate targets were ruled insufficient and unconstitutional, and lawyer Lee Chi-sun said the two cases were very similar.

"Just as Germany has further strengthened its reduction targets for 2040 and revised the goal for 2045 after their ruling, we expect Seoul's 2030 reduction targets will be strengthened" and expanded, he said.&nbsp;

Other cases have not fared so well globally,&nbsp;a child-led suit in California over alleged government failures to curb pollution was thrown out in May.

The Thursday ruling is the first in Asia to question a country's national greenhouse gas reduction targets, "and the court's ruling can set an important precedent for other courts in Asia to rule on similar cases," said Lin Yan-Ting, a climate activist who is a plaintiff for a similar case in Taiwan, filed in January.&nbsp;

Outside the Seoul court, 12-year-old plaintiff Han Jeah, who started the case aged 10 -- said the verdict was "like a wish came true."

"We have the right to live safely and happily even in the climate crisis. This right should be protected under any circumstances and cannot be infringed upon by anyone," Han Jeah said.

"So I wanted to show people through this lawsuit how much we (young people) know and how deeply we worry about climate change."

The vessel carrying four policemen approached the Spanish semi-exclave of Melilla. According to the video, a larger Guardia Civil patrol boat moving towards the Zodiac inflatable was seen trying to get the small dinghy, causing at least one person to fall out of the small vessel.&nbsp;

Jeremy Skibicki, a white supremacist serial killer, was given four life sentences by a Canadian court for murdering four native women in 2022 and abusing their corpses. The murders had shocked the First Nation community in Winnipeg region and the nation.

The murders came to light after a man informed police about finding human remains while searching for scrap metal in a bin near Skibicki's residence.

Skibicki eventually confessed to having killed four women.

The fish were collected using nets by trawlers and were put in the back of trucks on Wednesday. According to the authorities, over 40 tonnes of fish have been piled up in the last 24 hours.

Achilleas Beos, the mayor of Volos, said the odour was unbearable. In a press conference on Wednesday, he blamed the government for not handling the issue before it reached the city. The rotting fish could pose an environmental threat to other species in the region, he added.

<h2>Aftermath of last year's flood</h2>

According to experts, the historic floods in the Thessaly plane farther north last year was the cause behind this incident. The flood water refilled a lake drained in 1962 to prevent the spread of malaria, causing it to swell by three times more than its normal state.

The water in the lake receded and pushed the fish to the Volos port that drains into the salt water of Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. The river flowing to Volos did not have any net placed at its mouth to stop the fish from going into saltwater of the sea, which likely killed them, said the experts.

“They didn’t do the obvious, to put a protective net,” Mayor Beos said, blaming the government authorities.

The environment ministry has not commented on the issue yet. An investigation has been ordered by the local prosecutors.

Scientists have linked the disaster to climate change which caused extreme weather in Greece. This resulted in scorching high temperatures and unpredictable rainfall that caused wildfires and floods in the country.

<h2>'Too late' for local restaurants</h2>

“Closing the barrier now doesn’t help,” said Dimosthenis Bakoyiannis, a beach restaurant owner near Volos. “Now it’s too late, the tourist season is over.”&nbsp;

Bakoyiannis claims his turnover has significantly dropped by 80% this season as tourists did not want to visit after the floods.

“The situation with this dead fish will be the death of us,” said the president of the local association of restaurants and bars, Stefanos Stefanou. “What visitor will come to our city after this?”

The United States expressed their doubt over the chances of resuming nuclear talks with Iran after its supreme leader hinted at the possibility of returning to the negotiations over the nuclear programmes with the former.&nbsp;

"We will judge Iran's leadership by their actions, not their words," said a State Department spokesperson on Tuesday (August 27).

"If Iran wants to demonstrate seriousness or a new approach, they should stop nuclear escalations and start meaningfully cooperating with the IAEA," the spokesperson added while speaking about the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which is an intergovernmental watchdog that has often faced subversion by Tehran.

<h2>Iran's green signal on renewed nuclear talks with US</h2>

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave a green signal to the country's newly elected president Masoud Pezeshkian to restart negotiations over nuclear programmes with the United States on Tuesday (August 27), while at the same time warning that the government of the country should not place any trust in Washington DC.&nbsp;

"This does not mean that we cannot interact with the same enemy in certain situations," said Khamenei, as per the official transcript of his remarks. "There is no harm in that, but do not place your hopes in them," he added.

The remarks of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei defined the red lines for any talks happening under Pezeshkian's government and renewed his warnings regarding not trusting the United States, as he said, “Do not trust the enemy.”

A Kentucky man who was the first rioter to enter the US Capitol during the January 6, 2021, attack on Congress by Donald Trump supporters was sentenced to 53 months in prison on Tuesday.

First rioter to enter US Capitol sentenced to 53 months

The US Justice Department filed a new indictment against Donald Trump on Tuesday (Aug 27) over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The new indictment, however, does not really change the criminal case against him. In fact, it gives Trump protection from arrest in the wake of a July US Supreme Court ruling saying that all US presidents have immunity for official acts but not unofficial ones.&nbsp;

"Today, a federal grand jury in the District of Columbia returned a superseding indictment, charging the defendant with the same criminal offenses that were charged in the original indictment," lawyers for Jack Smith, the special counsel handling the case, said.

"The superseding indictment, which was presented to a new grand jury that had not previously heard evidence in this case, reflects the Government’s efforts to respect and implement the Supreme Court’s holdings and remand instructions in Trump v United States."

The Supreme Court wrote in its July ruling that Trump was "absolutely immune from prosecution" over his discussion with Justice Department officials.

The Supreme Court also suggested that a president could be criminally immune in connection to acts between him and the vice president.&nbsp;

"The defendant had no official responsibilities related to any state’s certification of the election results," the document says.

Prosecutors also highlighted that Trump used his Twitter account (now X) both for official and personal acts.&nbsp;

The case is still unlikely to go to trial before the 2024 presidential election in November.&nbsp;
