To leave NATO would be a tough task for Trump as Congress passed a legislation in 2023 that would prevent any president from pulling out of the alliance without its approval.
After US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (April 1) criticised NATO allies for their "reluctance" to support the United States in the ongoing war against Iran, French President Emmanuel Macron said it would be unrealistic to launch a military operation to force open the Strait of Hormuz.
“Some people defend the idea of freeing the Strait of Hormuz by force via a military operation, a position sometimes expressed by the United States, although it has varied,” said Macron on his trip to South Korea
“This was never the option we have supported because it is unrealistic,” he further said and added, “It would take forever, and would expose all those who go through the strait to risks from the guardians of the revolution but also ballistic missiles."
While Donald Trump in an interview to The Telegraph newspaper has threatened to leave the NATO alliance. This is largely because the US President is unhappy with NATO countries not willing to join the Iran war.
“NATO treated us very badly, and you have to remember it because they’ll be treating us badly again if we ever need them,” he said Wednesday at a private White House lunch for the upcoming Easter holiday.

However, in his televised evening address to the American people about the Iran war, Trump chose not to mention NATO and suggested that countries dependent on oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz “must deal with it.
Trump’s stance on NATO puts its alliance at risk of breaking. But to leave NATO would be a tough task as Congress passed a legislation in 2023 that would prevent any president from pulling out of the alliance without its approval.
