UN urges Musk to 'ensure human rights' at Twitter

With its first significant update to the social media network, Twitter formally released an update of its app on the Apple App Store on Saturday. The newly released update charges $8 for the highly coveted blue check verification mark.

According to Reuters, users of Apple iOS devices can now acquire the blue checkmark next to their usernames by paying $7.99 a month, which will qualify them for the verification mark "just like the celebrities, companies and politicians you already follow."

In an open letter published on Saturday, UN human rights chief Volker Turk has urged Twitter's new owner Elon Musk to ensure that respect for human rights is at the core of the social network and its management. This comes as just days after taking over Twitter, the Tesla CEO sacked half of the company's staff.

Mass layoffs at Elon Musk-owned Twitter has stroked fears of misinformation just before US midterm polls.

"I would be real careful on this platform in the coming days... about what you retweet, who you follow, and even your own sense of what's going on," said Kate Starbird, a disinformation researcher and assistant professor at the University of Washington.
 

According to a report by The New York Times, Twitter CEO Elon Musk is preparing to roll out a feature that would cost users money if they want to send direct messages to well-known public personalities on the network. This move is intended to create income for Twitter. This comes after Musk confessed that Twitter's income had decreased significantly. He tweeted, "Despite the fact that nothing has changed with content filtering and we done everything we could to placate the activists, Twitter has seen a large reduction in income as a result of activist organisations lobbying advertisers.

As per reports, Twitter's new cief didn't sign the memo to the workers about Twitter's mass layoffs. The memo was rather inscribed as, "Thank you, Twitter."
 

The new Twitter owner ELon musk recently changed the location for his accout to 'hell.' This comes after the owner being was severly criticised for his decision of mass layoffs and charging $8 for blue tick on the microblogging site. 

United Airlines on Friday (November 04) announced the suspension of ad spending on Twitter following content moderation concerns.  

The US President Joe Biden on Friday (November 04) said that Elon Musk has purchased Twitter that spews lies acorss the world. 

Biden said, "And now what are we all worried about: Elon Musk goes out and buys an outfit that sends - that spews lies all across the world... There’s no editors anymore in America. There’s no editors. How do we expect kids to be able to understand what is at stake?"

Late Friday, the Head of Safety and Integrity at Twitter, Yoel Roth, took to the social media platform and appears to have confirmed that at least 50% of the workforce has been impacted by the company-wide mass layoffs.
