Israel-Iran war: PM Modi speaks to Saudi Crown Prince, Bahrain King, Jordan’s Abdullah II

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (Mar 02) held telephonic conversations with leaders of Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, as the military conflict in West Asia escalated into a multi-front regional war after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was assassinated in a US–Israel military strike on a high-security compound in Tehran.

The Indian Prime Minister strongly condemned the recent attacks on both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. He also enquired about the safety and well-being of the large Indian community residing in these countries, reflecting India’s priority to safeguard its diaspora amid the regional turmoil.

He also spoke to Jordan’s King Abdullah II, reaffirming support for peace and security while expressing concern over the evolving situation in West Asia.

“Conveyed our deep concern at the evolving situation in the region. We reaffirm our support for peace, security and the well-being of the people of Jordan. I thanked him for taking care of the Indian community in Jordan in this difficult hour,” Modi wrote on X.

These calls build on PM Modi’s ongoing diplomatic outreach since the conflict erupted involving the United States, Israel and Iran. On Sunday, he held a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he reiterated India’s call for an early cessation of all hostilities in the region to restore peace.

In a parallel engagement that day, PM Modi also spoke to UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and “strongly condemned” the attack on the Emirates. He expressed gratitude to Nahyan for looking after the Indian community living in the Gulf nation and stated that New Delhi backs de-escalation, regional peace, security and stability.

The Gulf nations came under heavy attack from Iranian missiles and drones after Tehran launched retaliatory strikes on Israel, US bases and allies in the region, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Military bases, airports and critical infrastructure, including Aramco’s largest refinery in Saudi Arabia, suffered damage in Tehran’s military strikes.

The conflict in West Asia escalated after the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation in Iran on Saturday, aiming to dismantle Tehran’s nuclear programme and trigger regime change through decapitation strikes targeting the country’s top leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Several other senior figures were also reported killed as the US–Israel campaign carried out a massive coordinated aerial assault.
