Indonesia stadium stampede leaves 125 dead: As it happened

As per the BBC, Indonesian officials have revised the death toll from 174 to 125 after the deadly stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java. The stampede occured following a match between local clubs Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya.

Spanish clubs have agreed to observe a minute's silence before kick-off in the remaining matches on the weekend as a mark of respect for the victims of the deadly stadium stampede in Indonesia.

"La Liga and the RFEF have agreed a minute's silence to offer their condolences to the Indonesian people, especially the families of the deceased in the tragedy at the Kanjuruhan Stadium on the island of Java, as well as wishing a quick recovery to those injured," said La Liga in a statement Sunday.

"The football world is in a state of shock following the tragic incidents that have taken place in Indonesia at the end of the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.

"This is a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives following this tragic incident," he added.

"Together with FIFA and the global football community, all our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, those who have been injured, together with the people of the Republic of Indonesia, the Asian Football Confederation, the Indonesian Football Association, and the Indonesian Football League, at this difficult time."

FIFA presidnet Gianni Infantino has said the entire football world is in shock following the death of 174 people in tragic stadium stampede in Indonesia. Infantino extended his condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the tragic incident.

Football fan Muhamad Dipo Maulana, 21, who was present at the stadium for the game, told the BBC that more than 20 tear gas shots were fired by the police towards spectators resulting in the deadly stampede. Dipo said Arema fans went on the pitch to remonstrate with the players but were intercepted by the police and beaten.

FIFA has communicated with Indonesian football association - PSSI after the deadly stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java and have demanded a report on the incident. PSSI Secretary General Yunus Nusi informed that they had sent a team to the stadium for investigation after the fatal stampede and that FIFA has demanded a report.

Indonesian fans are furious at the mismanagement of the authorities following one of the worst stadium disasters in the world in Malang on Sunday. "Hope it won't be like this again, we are all sick. So sorry for our friends, we ask for justice," a survivor 22-year-old, Muhammad Rian Dwicahyono told a reporter.

The deadly stamepde in Indonesia in one of the worst football tragedies in recent times, but there has been no official word from FIFA yet on the incident which has rocked the world. FIFA is reportedly set to suspend the Indonesian Football Association once again in the wake of the tragedy.

As per BBC, at least 174 fans lost their lives in the ugly stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java during a stampede following the clash between local clubs Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya. 

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has ordered the temporary suspension of the local football league Liga 1 in the wake of the deadly stampede which left 129 dead. The upcoming matches  of the local football league will remain suspended till further orders.
 

Football's world governing body FIFA states that no crowd control gas should be used by stewards or police officers at football matches. The use of tear gas had led to a stampede following the game between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya in East Java on Sunday.

 Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Sunday ordered a safety review of the country's football matches after 129 people were killed in a stampede triggered by clashes between fans and police.

The country's sports and youth minister, national police chief and Indonesian football association chief were ordered "to conduct a thorough evaluation of football matches and the security procedures", Widodo said in a televised statement.

The chair of the country's football association, Mochamad Iriawan, has apologised to the families of the victims.

He added that the incident "really tarnishes the face of Indonesian football".

More than a dozen vehicles were set alight within the grounds of the stadium, and many of them were police cars.

Thousands of Arema supporters reportedly ran onto the pitch after their team lost, which sparked fighting. Players from Persebaya left the field right away, while the Arema players who remained there were also attacked.
