A 19-year-old former student opened fire at a Florida school killing at least 17 people terrifying students before he was arrested by police.

The gunman was identified as Nikolaus Cruz, an ex-student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Cruz was earlier expelled from school due to "disciplinary reasons."

At least20 people were injured in the shooting.

"It's a horrific situation," Broward Country Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said: "The gunman surrendered to police without a struggle," adding, "It's catastrophic, there really are no words."

Reports said at least 12 people were killed inside the school premises and two others just outside the building and one other on the street. Two victims died in hospital.

Police said the victims comprised of students and adults.
