Biden permits Ukraine to use US-supplied long-range missiles to strike inside Russia

The administration of United States President Joe Biden has for the first time permitted Ukraine to use the US-supplied long-range missile for striking inside Russia, Reuters and Associated Press reported citing sources.
The development marked a significant change in the policy of the United States in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The decision has brought a major shift in US policy, as Biden is set to leave office and President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to limit US support for Ukraine and bring an end to the ongoing war. The White House has not commented on the development.

The decision was taken months after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested permission to use US weapons to strike the Russian military targets which are far away from its border.

According to the report, Ukraine has made plans to carry out its first long-range attacks in the days ahead.
Ukraine is most likely to use the weapons in response to the decision of North Korea to send thousands of troops to Russia to support its ally in the war. This development has caused concern to both Washington and Kyiv.
Citing sources, news agency Reuters reported that the first deep strikes will be carried out by Ukraine using ATACMS rockets that have a range of up to 190 miles (306 km).

Although some US officials have expressed skepticism that permitting long-range strikes will change the overall trajectory of the war, at the moment, the decision can help Ukraine and can place Kyiv in a comparatively good negotiating position when ceasefire talks start.
It is not known if the decision of Biden will be reversed by Trump, in the wake of his stand against the US financial and military aid to Ukraine and aim to end the war quickly.
Few congressional Republicans have appealed to Biden to ease the rules on how U.S.-provided weapons can be used by Ukraine.
Russia had clearly stated that the step to loosen limits on the use of US weapons by Ukraine would be seen as a huge escalation.
