Who is Rishi Shah: Indian-American man convicted of $1 billion fraud

Rishi Shah, a 38-year-old Indian-American man has been sentenced to prison for seven and a half years. He has been involved in a $1 billion fraud involving his healthcare advertising startup, Outcome Health. He has duped top investors like Goldman Sachs and Google's parent company, Alphabet, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s venture capital firm.

Who is Rishi Shah?

Rishi Shah co-founded Context Media Health along with Shradha Agarwal and Brad Purdy, which was later renamed Outcome Health, in 2006. The company focused on healthcare advertising by providing television devices to display ads related to health targeted at patients. The company's valuation grew considerably, attracting significant clients and investors in the tech and healthcare industry.

Son of a doctor who emigrated from India, Shah studied in the summer economics programme at Harvard University in 2005. He also studied at Northwestern University but dropped out to start his own venture.

Shah also co-founded another business JUmpStart Ventures in 2011. He has made over 60 direct investments in health and education technology, and media. Additionally, Shah serves on the Board of Directors of Young Presidents Organisation (YPO), 1871 and MATTER, a healthcare innovators community.

Lawsuit against Rishi Shah

Rishi Shah falsely represented his net worth raised to over $4 billion in 2016. He is also indicted of money laundering and fraud with over a count of 12.

Shah's fraud schemes came to light in 2017 after the Wall Street Journal revealed his unlawful activities at Outcome Health. High-profile investors including Alphabet and Goldman Sachs sued the company for its fraudulent activities and deceiving them.

Shah and his co-founders were convicted in April 2023. Shah has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, while Agarwal and Purdy have been handedthree year andtwo years and three months prison term, respectively.
