US teen dies of cardiac arrest after 'spicy chip challenge', confirms autopsy report

A US teenager suffered cardiac arrest and died after participating in a social media challenge that involved eating an extremely hot tortilla chip, according to an autopsy report released on Thursday (May 16). Harris Wolobah, a 14-year-old from Massachusetts, passed away in September 2023 after attempting the "One Chip Challenge." This challenge involves eating a single chip made by Paqui, coated with Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper peppers. The challenge has seen various versions over the years, with the types of peppers used changing each time. According to the autopsy report reviewed by AFP, the local chief medical examiner concluded that Harris died of cardiac arrest after consuming a food containing a significant amount of capsaicin, a chili pepper extract. The autopsy also revealed that the teenager had an enlarged heart, which may have contributed to his death. In response to his death, Paqui pulled the product—sold in a coffin-shaped box with a red skull and labelled 'extreme heat'—from store shelves. Media reports indicate that in California, three young people were hospitalised after participating in the challenge, and seven others fell ill in Minnesota for the same reason. The menace of 'One Chip Challenge'

The "One Chip Challenge" is a viral social media dare that involves eating a single, extremely spicy tortilla chip and then enduring the intense heat without consuming any other food or drink for as long as possible. The chip, manufactured by the brand Paqui, is coated with some of the world's hottest peppers, such as the Carolina Reaper and the Naga Viper. Participants often film themselves attempting the challenge and share their reactions online, contributing to its popularity. The challenge has gained traction due to the extreme heat of the chip, which can cause significant discomfort, pain, and in some cases, more severe health issues.
