Samsung Galaxy Ring: First impressions

The much-awaited Samsung Galaxy Ring is finally here. I got to spend some time with the new smart ring during the Galaxy Unpacked event 2024 in Paris. Here are my initial thoughts:

Design and ergonomics

The Galaxy Ring looks like a regular ring that you may have seen many people wear as an accessory. But what makes it different is that it's a connected ring that can do a lot more than you can imagine.

I quite like its minimalist design. From the outside, it appears to be a basic accessory, but the sensors located on the inside make it a smart product.

The ring is available in three different colours - black, silver, and gold. I quite like the black and silver colours; the shade of gold is not what I would prefer. I believe that the gold colour doesn't need the extra shine.

The ring comes in nine different sizes so that you can pick one that fits you the best. Talking about comfort and handling, the Galaxy Ring weighs around threegrams, making it easier for people to wear it for long hours without any discomfort.

Samsung's new smart ring has a water resistance of 10 ATM, which means it can withstand pressures equivalent to a depth of 100 metres. So, you don't need to worry about removing it while going for a shower or swim.

The ring comes in a small transparent case which doubles up as a charging case. The Galaxy Ring's case also features LED lighting to indicate charging status. Along with the ring, I like the form factor of the case.

Performance and potential

The Galaxy Ring is said to do various things. For instance, the Galaxy Ring is engineered with Samsung’s sleep AI algorithm to help you understand your sleep patterns and enable you to build better habits. Sleep metrics such as movement during sleep, sleep latency, and heart and respiratory rate are claimed to provide a detailed and accurate analysis of sleep quality.

With Cycle Tracking, users can track their menstrual cycle through overnight skin temperature monitoring.

The initial focus of the ring is on simplifying wellness.

In addition, the Galaxy Ring also supports gesture controls. For instance, you can use gestures to take photos or dismiss alarms.

According to the company's claims, the smart ring can last for up to seven days.

Priced at $399, the Galaxy Ring will be available in select markets from July 24. There is no word yet on when it will go on sale in India.

The Galaxy Ring may appear to be a new disruptor in the wearables category, but I thinkits success can be determined after putting it to real-world tests.
