US intelligence shows that even within the Chinese Communist Party, officials did not freely share information with their counterparts in Beijing.&nbsp;

The last official statement from the intelligence community on the origins of the virus, in April, said it would "rigorously examine emerging information and intelligence to determine whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan."

The new high comes after the health ministry on Wednesday counted 642 new cases, confirming an upward curve.

Six people also died over the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 35,418 in a total of 256,118 cases, health officials added.

"We are not in as bad a position as France and Spain, but the current situation is not satisfactory," said Professor Massimo Galli, who heads the infectious diseases department at Milan's prestigious Sacco hospital.

"The end of confinement has resulted in an excessive feeling of false security," he told the La Repubblica newspaper.

Italy in May emerged from a severe lockdown after becoming one the first European countries to report cases of COVID-19.

We have to be careful, otherwise we will find ourselves facing an extremely difficult situation," Galli warned, pointing particularly to returning travellers over the summer vacation.

"I don't want to look like the one blaming young people, there are certain episodes that have struck me," like nine young people who tested positive after returning from Croatia.

"Every day we receive reports of this type," Galli said.

The highest number of cases were reported in the northern Veneto and Lombardy regions, with 159 and 154 and in Rome's Lazio region with 115.

However, the question on the origins of the coronavirus still remain unanswered, however, it may change now as two scientists in America have penned their report shedding new light on the origins&nbsp;of the deadly coronavirus.

The scientists claim to have found evidence that it started inside the Mojiang mineshaft - not eight months back but eight years back.

The Mojiang mine is located in China’s Yunnan province. In 2012, six miners spent 14 days inside the mine removing bat faeces. Later they showed symptoms similar to the Wuhan virus with cough, high fever with shortness of breath, headaches and sore limbs.

Three out of the six miners reportedly died. All this information is part of a Masters thesis from Chinese physician Li Xu. The thesis was translated and studied by Dr Jonathan Latham and Dr Allison Wilson.

Their conclusion is that the virus most likely escaped from a lab and that there have been six documented outbreaks of SARS since 2003.

The are several reasons for it. Firstly, China is home to 1.4 billion people but the country is far from self-reliant. It imports 20 per cent to 30 per cent of its food grains. China was the world's top agricultural market between 2003 and 2017, its food imports have grown from $14 billion to $105 billion from the top-10 import partners alone, China imports food worth $75.3 billion.

It imports $22.7 billion worth from Brazil, $18.1 billion from the United States, $5.6 billion from Canada, $5.35 billion from New Zealand, $4.3 billion from Indonesia, $4.13 billion from Thailand, $3.37 billion from Hong Kong and $2.84 billion from France, according to 2017 data.

The moral of the story is that China relies on the world to feed its people. Now, China is reeling under a crisis of its own making. It is in a trade war with the US which is the same country from which Beijing had imported grains worth $5.5 billion last year.

China's total agricultural imports from India in 2018-19 was worth $1999 million, major imports included prawns, castor oil, capsicum etc. Food security has always been a priority for China since it needs to feed 1.4 billion people but Xi Jinping has rejigged China's priority list by putting his expansionist ambitions above everything else. The result is the global supply chain has been impaired because of the Wuhan virus pandemic.

Countries are refusing to engage with China because of its aggressive foreign policy and then there are the trade wars. In short, China may be headed towards a food crisis.

However, Xi Jinping has been masquerading through the crisis as a frugal campaigner under "Operation empty plate", restaurants are being asked to offer small portions and diners are being asked to order less. Xi Jinping may be hiding the problem of food shortage that China may soon be facing.

Beijing may have known it for some time. In June, China imported 910,000 tons of wheat, it was a 197 per cent increase year-on-year. It imported 880,000 tons of corn which is a year-on-year increase of 23 per cent. Imports of sorghum surged to 680,000 tons and sugar imports touched 140,000 tons. It is a 196 per cent year-on-year increase. Earlier, the numbers looked like China was trying to take advantage of cheap global prices but it looks it could have been China trying to avert a crisis.

It was stocking up in the fear of being cut-off from the global supply chain but the question is how long will these stocks last because by the looks of it China's isolation is not ending anytime soon.

"One must remember that there was a specific surveillance system in place in Wuhan for picking up clusters of atypical pneumonia. It was there for a very specific purpose and the fact that that fire alarm was triggered doesn't necessarily mean that that is where the disease crossed from animals into humans," Michael Ryan said.

Ryan asserted that "more extensive, retrospective epidemiologic study" was required to look at the "first cases and clusters in Wuhan and to fully understand the links between those cases" to understand "at what point, in Wuhan or elsewhere, was the animal-human species barrier breached."

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had said on Monday that the team that had travelled to China had concluded its mission to lay the groundwork for further joint efforts to identify the virus origins.

Tedros had stated that epidemiological studies will begin in Wuhan to identify the "potential source of infection" from the early cases reported. The WHO team will coordinate with Chinese scientists to ascertain how the disease jumped from animals to humans. The extensive investigation will also be overseen by the Chinese government.

Tedros had warned on Monday that there may never be a "silver bullet" to fight the virus and there might never be as he and cautioned countries to enforce health measures like wearing masks, ensure social distancing, and to undertake virus testing and tracing on a large scale.

The message to people and governments is clear: "Do it all"," Tedros said. The WHO chief said that there are "concerns that we may not have a vaccine that may work, or its protection could be for just a few months," while adding"until we finish the clinical trials, we will not know."

In 2007, Fu Xiuqiong, a Chinese citizen, found herself swamped as water began rising around her farm. The dam reservoir began filling and she was given no land as compensation nor did she have any money to relocate.

"Now, where we're located, it is extremely hard to survive. We are not able to leave, after the big migration, they didn't give us the land, we didn't get any of the money from the government," Fu Xiuqiong, resident on Three Gorges dam reservoir, said.

The Communist Party had its way with the dam but it regretted its decision later. In 2011, Beijing issued a rare admission - the Three Gorges Dam had caused a slew of urgent environmental, geological and economic problems.

According to a report, damming up too much water increased the frequency of earthquakes and high demand for water led to droughts. There was widespread contamination of Yangtze tributaries and lakes as copper, zinc, lead and ammonium was found in the water samples.

Earlier, the country's capital Beijing had experienced a huge spike in cases leading the authorities to shut down markets after traces of COVID-19 was discovered on chopping boards in the capital's Xinfadi market.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), travellers would have to upload a picture of their coronavirus test&nbsp; on the health app&nbsp;and foreigners would need to submit it to the Chinese embassy or consulate.

The CAAC said the tests should be done within five days of travel.

China had earlier clampdown on international travel in March as the coronavirus cases overwhelmed the country but has&nbsp;gradually allowed business travellers, diplomats and employees of large enterprises while easing restrictions on flights from foreign airlines.

They could have stopped the virus but didn't: Trump lashes out at China again

It is common practice among journalists motivated by a political agenda to misunderstand or misrepresent evidence in order to create or sustain a narrative that conforms to a predetermined conclusion.

Science now seems to be succumbing to the same strategy.

In order to escape the responsibility for the global pandemic, the Chinese Communist Party has aggressively promoted the narrative in both the scientific literature and the main stream media that COVID-19 is just another naturally-occurring disease transmission from animals to humans.

For example, China’s state-controlled media outlet, CGTN, republished an <a href="https://news.cgtn.com/news/2020-07-18/Here-s-how-scientists-know-the-coronavirus-wasn-t-made-in-a-lab-SerXv8GSU8/index.html">edited version</a> of “Here's how scientists know the coronavirus came from bats and wasn't made in a lab,” written by Polly Hayes, a lecturer in Parasitology and Medical Microbiology, University of Westminster in England.

Both articles begin by stating, unequivocally, that SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19, shows no signs of genetic manipulation.

They quote Hayes: “If the virus had been genetically engineered in a lab there would be signs of manipulation in the genome data. This would include evidence of an existing viral sequence as the backbone for the new virus, and obvious, targeted inserted (or deleted) genetic elements."

"But no such evidence exists. It is very unlikely that any techniques used to genetically engineer the virus would not leave a genetic signature, like specific identifiable pieces of DNA code.”

First of all, SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus, which means<a href="https://www.rochester.edu/newscenter/covid-19-rna-coronavirus-research-428952/">https://www.rochester.edu/newscenter/covid-19-rna-coronavirus-research-428952/</a> that unlike in humans and other mammals, the genetic material for SARS-CoV-2 is encoded in RNA, not DNA.

Furthermore, the ability to detect genetic manipulation of viruses remains a controversial issue, although the continual regurgitation in the media that manipulation always results in a genetic signature has reached the level of urban myth.

It is important to note that, so far, the natural source of SARS-CoV-2 has not been known. Although its “backbone” appears to originate in bats, no intermediate animal host has been identified.

In a <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-01989-z">news article</a> recently published by the international science journal Nature, the progress, or lack thereof, identifying the natural source of SARS-CoV-2 was reviewed.

According to the article, the two closest, but nevertheless relatively distant, relatives of SARS-CoV-2 are the bat coronaviruses RaTG13 and RmYN02, whose genomes are 96% and 93% identical to SARS-CoV-2, respectively.

Although RaTG13 is 96% identical overall to SARS-CoV-2, its receptor binding domain (RBD), which allows the virus to bind to the human angiotensin converting enzyme-2 receptor (ACE2), is structurally different and <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0820-9">suggests</a> that RaTG13 may not bind efficiently to the human ACE2.

The Nature article also does not mention that the RBD of RmYN02 showed only a <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/pdf/S0960-9822(20)30662-X.pdf?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS096098222030662X%3Fshowall%3Dtrue">61.3% sequence identity</a> with SARS-CoV-2, meaning it is highly unlikely that RmYN02 could bind to human cells at all.

If none of the likely bat coronavirus relatives could bind effectively to human cells and no intermediate animal hosts have been identified, how did SARS-CoV-2 attain such a high affinity for human infection even in the earliest cases?

Such “pre-adaptation” for human infectivity and pathogenicity can be easily explained by genetic manipulation.

In 2015, Ralph Baric from the University of North Carolina and Zheng-Li Shi, the “<a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-chinas-bat-woman-hunted-down-viruses-from-sars-to-the-new-coronavirus1/">bat woman</a>” from the Wuhan Institute of Virology jointly published a <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nm.3985">scientific article</a> describing the combination of the RBD from a newly isolated coronavirus (SHC014) and the “backbone” from SARS-CoV, the coronavirus responsible for the 2002-2003 pandemic.

The above experiment produced a novel virus, chimera SHC014-MA15, which showed “robust viral replication both in vitro [cell cultures] and in vivo [animals],” using models adapted to test human infectivity.

Similar increases in human infectivity and pathogenicity can also be <a href="https://www.minervanett.no/files/2020/07/13/TheEvidenceNoNaturalEvol.pdf">accomplished</a> by several “point” replacements of single amino acids capable of having profound clinical effects, changes which might be otherwise indistinguishable from natural mutation.

Finally, the most conspicuous sign of SARS-CoV-2 genetic manipulation is the presence of a furin polybasic cleavage site, a structure that is not present in any of the coronaviruses so far identified as possible direct ancestors.

In order to escape the responsibility for the global pandemic, the Chinese Communist Party has aggressively promoted the narrative in both the scientific literature and the main stream media that COVID-19 is just another naturally-occurring disease transmission from animals to humans. For example, China’s state-controlled media outlet, CGTN, republished an edited version of “Here's how scientists know the coronavirus came from bats and wasn't made in a lab,” written by Polly Hayes, a lecturer in Parasitology and Medical Microbiology, University of Westminster in England. Both articles begin by stating, unequivocally, that SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19, shows no signs of genetic manipulation. They quote Hayes: “If the virus had been genetically engineered in a lab there would be signs of manipulation in the genome data. This would include evidence of an existing viral sequence as the backbone for the new virus, and obvious, targeted inserted (or deleted) genetic elements." "But no such evidence exists. It is important to note that, so far, the natural source of SARS-CoV-2 has not been known. Although its “backbone” appears to originate in bats, no intermediate animal host has been identified. In a news article recently published by the international science journal Nature, the progress, or lack thereof, identifying the natural source of SARS-CoV-2 was reviewed. According to the article, the two closest, but nevertheless relatively distant, relatives of SARS-CoV-2 are the bat coronaviruses RaTG13 and RmYN02, whose genomes are 96% and 93% identical to SARS-CoV-2, respectively. Although RaTG13 is 96% identical overall to SARS-CoV-2, its receptor binding domain (RBD), which allows the virus to bind to the human angiotensin converting enzyme-2 receptor (ACE2), is structurally different and suggests that RaTG13 may not bind efficiently to the human ACE2. The Nature article also does not mention that the RBD of RmYN02 showed only a 61.3% sequence identity with SARS-CoV-2, meaning it is highly unlikely that RmYN02 could bind to human cells at all. If none of the likely bat coronavirus relatives could bind effectively to human cells and no intermediate animal hosts have been identified, how did SARS-CoV-2 attain such a high affinity for human infection even in the earliest cases? Such “pre-adaptation” for human infectivity and pathogenicity can be easily explained by genetic manipulation. In 2015, Ralph Baric from the University of North Carolina and Zheng-Li Shi, the “bat woman” from the Wuhan Institute of Virology jointly published a scientific article describing the combination of the RBD from a newly isolated coronavirus (SHC014) and the “backbone” from SARS-CoV, the coronavirus responsible for the 2002-2003 pandemic. The above experiment produced a novel virus, chimera SHC014-MA15, which showed “robust viral replication both in vitro [cell cultures] and in vivo [animals],” using models adapted to test human infectivity. Similar increases in human infectivity and pathogenicity can also be accomplished by several “point” replacements of single amino acids capable of having profound clinical effects, changes which might be otherwise indistinguishable from natural mutation. "There are many examples from around the world that have shown that even if the outbreak is very intense, it can still be brought back under control," the WHO chief said, adding, "and some of these examples are Italy, Spain and South Korea, and even in Dharavi – a densely packed area in the megacity of Mumbai – a strong focus on community engagement and the basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating all those that are sick is key to breaking the chains of transmission and suppressing the virus."

Tedros said the WHO officials travelling to China currently will help lay the groundwork for the WHO-led international mission to understand the origins of the virus and meet fellow scientists and learn about the progress made in understanding the animal reservoir for COVID-19 and how the disease jumped between animals to humans.

"Across all walks of life, we are all being tested to the limit," Tedros said, "from countries where there is exponential growth&nbsp;to places that are loosening restrictions and now starting to see cases rise."

"Only aggressive action combined with national unity and global solidarity can turn this pandemic around," the WHO chief said.

Meanwhile, Dr Mike Ryan, head of WHO's emergencies programme, said it was unlikely that the new coronavirus would be eliminated.

"In the current situation it is unlikely we can eradicate this virus," Ryan said while stressing that "by extinguishing clusters of infection, the world could potentially avoid the worst of having second peaks and having to move backwards in terms of lockdown".

Kazakhstan has not released any data but media reports claim that pneumonia cases in capital Nursultan, has more than doubled in June with more than 200 people being admitted to hospitals every day.

The question being asked is what are we to make of this? Is this a new virus? or is this virus related to COVID-19? and is China trying to wash its hands off another potential outbreak? one that Beijing itself claims "is deadlier than COVID-19".

It is something that the World Health Organisation will have to decide.
