Inflation in food articles in March was 3.24 per cent as prices of pulses, fruits and paddy hardened.

In vegetables, the rate of price rise was (-) 5.19 per cent, compared to (-) 2.90 per cent in the previous month.

Inflation in pulses was 13.14 per cent in March, while in fruits it was 16.33 per cent.

Inflation in the fuel and power basket was 10.25 per cent in March, against 0.58 per cent in February, mainly on account of rising prices of petrol and diesel.

"The prices of crude oil, petroleum products and basic metal substantially increased in March 2021 as compared to the corresponding month of last year. Also, due to nationwide lockdown, the WPI index for March 2020 was computed with a relatively low response rate," the commerce ministry said while releasing the data.

Retail inflation, as per data released earlier this week, rose to a 4-month high of 5.52 per cent in March.

The RBI in its monetary policy earlier this month kept policy rates unchanged and said it will maintain an accommodative monetary policy stance to support growth and keep inflation at the targeted level.

It projected retail inflation at 5.2 per cent in the June quarter.

Wholesale price-based inflation slipped to 22-month low at 2.45 per cent in May helped by falling prices of food articles, fuel and power items, according to an official data released Friday.

Inflation in food articles basket was 6.99 per cent, down from 7.37 per cent in April.

Vegetables inflation eased to 33.15 per cent in May, down from 40.65 per cent in the previous month. Inflation in potato was (-) 23.36 per cent, against (-) 17.15 per cent in April.

WPI inflation in May is the lowest in 22 months, since July 2017, when it was at 1.88 per cent.

Inflation in 'fuel and power' category cooled to 0.98 per cent, from 3.84 per cent last month. Manufactured items too saw decline in prices with inflation at 1.28 per cent in May, against 1.72 per cent in April.

WPI inflation data for March has been revised downwards to 3.10 per cent from provisional 3.18 per cent.

Inflation based on wholesale prices fell to an 8-month low of 3.80 per cent in December 2018, on softening prices of fuel and some food items.

Inflation in the 'fuel and power' basket in December slumped to 8.38 per cent, nearly half of 16.28 per cent in November. This was on account of lowering of prices of petrol and diesel through December.

The data showed retail as well as wholesale price inflation remaining low for the most part of the year, though spikes in petrol and diesel prices came as a spoiler.

The retail inflation, measured as per the Consumer Price Index (CPI), remained mostly below 5 per cent, within the RBI's comfort level of 4 per cent with a bias of plus/minus 2 per cent. January was the only month when it crossed 5 per cent.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation is now at a 3-month low of 4.64 per cent, having oscillated in a range of 2.74-5.68 per cent during the year.

The latest data puts retail inflation for November at the year's lowest level of 2.33 per cent, mainly due to low prices of food articles, coupled with deflation in some agricultural products — which is good news for consumers as well as the government and the RBI.

But, this same situation has also led to concerns about the falling prices of agricultural produce resulting in a crisis for farmers. The crisis has got further compounded for those having taken farm loans and there have been reports from various parts of the country about farmers failing to recover even input cost for some commodities including onion.

The year saw multiple agitations by farmers demanding better price of their produce and also effective measures to support the farming sector. The farmers' distress also became a key election issue during recently-held assembly polls and may again be in focus during the 2019 national elections.

In the past, high inflation has been a bigger headache for governments and policymakers.

SBI's Group Chief Economic Adviser Soumya Kanti Ghosh said the government needs to support the rural sector through some sort of price or income support scheme.

"The decline in inflation is largely driven by food, but the recent meltdown in oil will help the numbers further. While the decline in food inflation is comforting for consumers, it is not good news for farmers," Ghosh said.&nbsp;

Unlike in past, farmers have started to realise that short-term loan waivers are not going to work on a durable basis and they want better solutions including incentives to the farm sector, subsidy, low-cost power and irrigation facilities, experts feel.

Several farmer leaders have alleged the government was not heeding to their demands for a reasonable minimum support price (MSP) and the hike announced by the Centre has not matched their expectations.

Edelweiss Securities' economist Madhavi Arora said the terms of trade have been unfavourable for the agriculture sector as despite higher MSPs announced this year, the ground impact has remained modest and food inflation continues to plunge further.

JNU Professor Kamal Mitra Chenoy said it will not be easy for the government to contain the farmers' distress as it is too late to take any effective measure and loan waivers are short-sighted steps.

"Deflation in farm products, while beneficial for consumers, can hurt the income of farmers. It is therefore extremely important to take forward reforms in the marketing and distribution of agricultural produce, which will lead to better remuneration for the farmer," industry chamber CII's Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said.

Greater investment in agriculture is also required including for rural infrastructure, irrigation, storage and warehousing facilities, he added.

The industry body said inflation turned out to be lower than expected in 2018, primarily due to moderation in prices of food products, while on the other hand inflation in fuel and other products in the CPI basket have been higher.

This trend may be reversed in the coming year as fuel prices moderate on lower oil prices and a stable rupee. Food prices may move up from current low levels, but overall retail inflation is expected to remain within the 4 per cent target of the RBI, Banerjee added.&nbsp;

Ghosh also said inflation outlook looks significantly benign.

"We expect inflation trajectory to stay decisively below 4 per cent at least in the first half of 2019. Inflation till March will stay below 3.5 per cent.&nbsp;

Global outlook looks wobbly. This will also impact India's growth prospects," he said.

Arora said sustained lower inflation should open up space for easing of interest rates in the first half of 2019.

Inflation at the wholesale level rose to a 6-month high of 3.59 percent in October as the prices of food articles, led by onions and vegetables, rose sharply.

Inflation, based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), was 2.60 percent in September. In October last year, it was 1.27 percent.

Last month&#39;s inflation was the highest since April when it was 3.85 percent.

The government data released today showed that inflation in food articles more than doubled to 4.30 percent in October.

For vegetables, it soared to 36.61 percent last month as against 15.48 percent in September.

In case of onions, inflation skyrocketed to 127.04 percent, while for the eggs, meat and fish segment the rate of price rise was 5.76 percent.

Inflation in manufactured products saw a slight dip to 2.62 percent, as against 2.72 percent in September.

In the fuel and power segment, inflation rose to 10.52 percent, as against 9.01 percent in September. Fuel inflation has remained high for the past three months as petrol and diesel prices continued to rule high tracking global crude oil rates.

Power tariffs shot through the roof on lower domestic production.

Pulses continued to witness deflation at 31.05 percent. Likewise, in potato deflation was at 44.29 percent and wheat at 1.99 percent.

The final print of August WPI inflation remained unchanged at 3.24 percent.

As per the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released yesterday, retail inflation for October rose to a 7-month high of 3.58 percent on costlier food items, especially vegetables.

Besides, industrial production for September expanded at 3.8 percent, on poor showing by the manufacturing sector coupled with a decline in consumer durables output.

Inflation at the wholesale level rose to a 6-month high of 3.59 percent in October as the prices of food articles, led by onions and vegetables, rose sharply. Inflation, based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), was 2.60 percent in September. In October last year, it was 1.27 percent. Last month's inflation was the highest since April when it was 3.85 percent. The government data released today showed that inflation in food articles more than doubled to 4.30 percent in October. For vegetables, it soared to 36.61 percent last month as against 15.48 percent in September. In case of onions, inflation skyrocketed to 127.04 percent, while for the eggs, meat and fish segment the rate of price rise was 5.76 percent. Inflation in manufactured products saw a slight dip to 2.62 percent, as against 2.72 percent in September. In the fuel and power segment, inflation rose to 10.52 percent, as against 9.01 percent in September. Fuel inflation has remained high for the past three months as petrol and diesel prices continued to rule high tracking global crude oil rates. Power tariffs shot through the roof on lower domestic production. Pulses continued to witness deflation at 31.05 percent. Likewise, in potato deflation was at 44.29 percent and wheat at 1.99 percent. The final print of August WPI inflation remained unchanged at 3.24 percent. As per the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released yesterday, retail inflation for October rose to a 7-month high of 3.58 percent on costlier food items, especially vegetables. Besides, industrial production for September expanded at 3.8 percent, on poor showing by the manufacturing sector coupled with a decline in consumer durables output. WPI inflation at 6-month high of 3.59%

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for all commodities for the month of July 2017 registered a 1.1 percent surge from June, and was recorded at 113.9 (provisional) from 112.7 (provisional) for the previous month.

The numbers registered the annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 1.88 percent (provisional) for the month of July, 2017, as compared to 0.90 percent (provisional) for the previous month and 0.63 percent during the corresponding month of the previous year.

Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 0.62 percent, compared to a build up rate of 3.81 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year

The index for the Food Articles group rose by 6.2 percent to 147.6 (provisional) from 139.0 (provisional) for the previous month, owing to higher price of fruits and vegetables (29 percent), peas (six percent), ragi (four percent) and condiments and spices, barley, poultry chicken and paddy at one percent each.

However, the price of betel leaves, tea, arhar, fish and jowar declined by 21 percent, five percent, four percent and one percent respectively.

In the Non-Food Articles group, the index rose by 0.6 percent, at 118.5 (provisional) from 117.8 (provisional) for the previous month, due to higher price of raw rubber (eight percent), safflower (four percent) and castor seed (one percent).

However, the price of groundnut seed, raw silk and jute and sesamum declined by four percent, three percent and one percent respectively.

The index for Crude Petroleum and Natural Gas&nbsp;group declined by 7.8 percent to 64.0 (provisional) from 69.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to an 11 percent decline in the price of crude petroleum.

The index for Manufacture of Tobacco Products&nbsp;group declined by 0.5 percent to 143.6 (provisional) from 144.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of other tobacco products by three percent. However, the price of cigarette surged by two percent.

The index for Manufacture of Textiles&nbsp;group declined by 0.3 percent to 113.4 (provisional) from 113.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of viscose yarn, manufacture of cordage, rope, twine and netting and woollen yarn, cotton yarn and manufacture of other textiles. However, the price of manufacture of knitted and crocheted fabrics was up by two percent.

The index for Manufacture of Wearing Apparel&nbsp;group rose by 2.1 percent to 136.0 (provisional) from 133.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of manufacture of wearing apparel.

On the contrary, the index for Manufacture of Leather and Related Products? group declined by 0.3 percent to 119.5 (provisional) from 119.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of canvas shoes, chrome tanned leather, harness, saddles and other related items and gloves of leather.

However, the price of belt and other articles of leather saw a surge by three percent.

WPI up by 1.1% from June, inflation at 1.88%?

Wholesale inflation soared to a 39-month high of 6.55 per cent in February and retail inflation inched up to 3.65 per cent due to rise in food and fuel prices, justifying the RBI&#39;s move to hold rates in last policy meet.

However, the prices of vegetables and pulses remained subdued during the month, giving some relief to consumers, showed the data released by the government today.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation in January was at 5.25 per cent, while the consumer inflation stood at 3.17 per cent.

The rising inflation is likely to refrain the Reserve Bank from cutting interest rates in its next monetary policy review on April 6.

According to the WPI data, food inflation witnessed a sharp 2.69 per cent rise in February, while the fuel basket surged by 21.02 per cent.

Although the inflation rates of cereals, rice and fruits witnessed an increase, vegetables prices declined by 8.05 per cent during February.

The December WPI inflation rate was revised upwards to 3.68 per cent from the previous 3.39 per cent.

As regards the CPI, it rose to a 4-month high of 3.65 per cent in February after touching a multi-year low of 3.17 per cent in the previous month.

Food inflation at the retail level was recorded at 2.01 per cent, while that in fruits was higher at 8.33 per cent, and fuel and light at 3.9 per cent in February. The rate of price rise in meat and fish was 3.5 per cent.

Prices of sugar and confectionery items rose by 18.83 per cent in February while inflation in milk and milk product increased by 4.22 per cent.

The rate of inflation in household goods and services was 4.09 per cent, while it stood at 4 per cent in health segment. The transport and communication became expensive by 5.39 per cent.

ICRA Principal Economist Aditi Nayar said the likelihood of a repo rate cut by the RBI in April 2017 remains subdued, given its focus on bringing inflation to 4 per cent in a durable manner.

&quot;CPI inflation is expected to rise to above 4.5 per cent in March 2017, as the base effect continues to unwind and prices of perishables track a seasonal uptrend,&quot; Nayar said.

Industry chamber Assocham said the RBI need not get excessively worried about rising WPI and the easing of the interest rate cycle should continue, because the latest WPI inflation does not indicate any improvement in the pricing power of the manufacturers.&nbsp;
