Fifty years have passed since hundreds of thousands of people packed into an upstate New York dairy farm for the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, one of the most iconic moments of the 1960s counterculture. 
 
While the old joke maintains that people who claim to remember Woodstock were not there -- with attendees too intoxicated to recall -- veterans of the fair remember it vividly for its unanticipated scale. 
 
"An endless wall of people," said Howard Ross, 69, who helped set up the festival. "I don`t think anybody there knew that they were going to be making history."

Food, water and places to sleep ran short as the crowds surged. But drugs remained in ready supply during a psychedelia-enthused area, and an iconic recording of the performance features promoters warning people not to take a bad batch of the "brown acid."

The three-day festival, meant to mark the 50th anniversary of the famed 1969 celebration of peace and music, was planned for August&nbsp;16-18.

"Woodstock 50 today announced that the three-day festival to celebrate its 50th anniversary has been cancelled," the organizers said in a statement.

"We are saddened that a series of unforeseen setbacks has made it impossible to put on the festival we imagined with the great lineup we had booked and the social engagement we were anticipating," said Michael Lang, one of the original producers of the 1969 event.

The cancellation was widely expected after a troubled five months in which organisers were turned down at two proposed sites in upstate New York, lost funding and headliners including rapper Jay-Z and pop star <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/miley-cyrus-latest-star-to-abandon-woodstock-50-239575">Miley Cyrus pulled out.</a>

Tickets never went on sale for the festival.

Organisers last week made a last-ditch attempt to put on a free, scaled-down event at an amphitheatre in Maryland, but several of the 80 or so acts began pulling out despite having already been paid.

Lang said in his statement that the smaller event in Maryland would have been aimed at raising funds for non-profits fighting climate change and organizations encouraging Americans to vote in the 2020 US&nbsp;general elections.

Woodstock 50 was first planned for the Watkins Glen motor racing venue in upstate New York, but the site pulled out in June. Organisers then attempted in vain to seek permits in Vernon, New York.

The nonprofit Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the current owner of the field where the 1969 Woodstock festival took place, also scaled back plans earlier this year for a three-day anniversary event. It will instead host separate concerts by Ringo Starr, Santana and the Doobie Brothers.

The organisers of a three-day concert marking the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival said on Friday they have obtained new funding to enable the show to go on.

Woodstock 50 said in a statement that US&nbsp;financial services firm Oppenheimer &amp; Co, a unit of Oppenheimer Holdings Inc, had signed on as an adviser to complete financing for the Aug. 16-18 festival at the Watkins Glen motor racing venue in New York state.

The festival, with an 80-act lineup that includes rapper Jay-Z and pop singer Miley Cyrus, was thrown into chaos last month after the lead Japanese investors announced they had decided to 'cancel the event.'

Friday's statement did not say how much money Oppenheimer had obtained.

"We are thrilled to be onboard for this incredible weekend of music and social engagement," John Tonelli, head of Debt Capital Markets and Syndication at Oppenheimer &amp; Co, said in the statement.

"We believe in Woodstock as an important American cultural icon and look forward to its regeneration," he added.

Woodstock 50 is backed by the co-producer of the original 1969 Woodstock festival, which was billed as 'three days of peace and music'&nbsp;and is regarded as one of the pivotal moments in music history.

But the anniversary event has been plagued with problems and delays in announcing selling dates for tickets, obtaining permits and arranging security and sanitation.

A New York State Supreme Court judge ruled earlier this week that original investors Amplifi Live, a unit of Dentsu Inc, had no right to unilaterally cancel the festival last month.

But the judge declined to order the return to the organizers of $17.8 million of Amplifi Live's funds.

Woodstock 50 producer Michael Lang said on Friday that a ticket on-sale date would be announced shortly.

"Despite our tremendous investment of time, effort and commitment, we don’t believe the production of the festival can be executed as an event worthy of the Woodstock Brand name while also ensuring the health and safety of the artists, partners and attendees," investors Dentsu Aegis Network, a unit of Dentsu Inc, said in a statement. 
 
"As a result and after careful consideration, Dentsu Aegis Network’s Amplifi Live, a partner of Woodstock 50, has decided to cancel the festival," the statement added. 
 
The August 1969 Woodstock festival, billed as "three days of peace and music," is regarded as one of the pivotal moments in music history. 
 
The producers of the 50th anniversary event did not immediately return a call for comment on the Dentsu statement.
