A distressing video from Uttarakhand was posted on social media platform X Wednesday afternoon, in which a group of men are seen harassing two women late at night. The one-minute video shared on social media is from the area near Sacred Heart School in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani.

The video shows two women in their vehicle being chased by a group of men in a black Mahindra Scorpio. The incident took place on what seems to be a quiet side street (identified as Mukhani Road in the hill town by Prachi Joshi, who posted the video on X).&nbsp;

Then a second car, a Hyundau Nios i20, speeds into view from the right side. Two men are perched on the front doors; only one leg is inside the car as they sit on the doors. The two are shouting abusive comments at the women.

"Just tonight I was coming back with my female friend from a movie and suddenly two cars, full of 10 men, tried to block our way...." Joshi, who shared the video, wrote in the X post. The woman later limited the views on her post.

"This happened straight for 25 minutes," she further detailed the horror.

“The black Scorpio (with temporary registration T0724UK4618C) was ahead of us... they tried to stop us from passing by opening their doors. The white Nios i20 (UK-04-AK-1928) was behind blocking us so we couldn't run away. The first time it happened we escaped..."

"The second time they blocked us completely by opening all car doors but luckily a man on a scooter appeared... he tried to pass them which gave us a chance to escape. We somehow managed to run from there but just after a few minutes they again tried to do the same (thing)."

Joshi also tagged Uttarakhand Police and expressed her anger at the failure of police to ensure the safety and security of women, even as the country is up in arms over the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital.

"Is this how peace and security are being maintained in the city? Why is hooliganism increasing in the city @uttarakhandcops that you'll take strict action against this matter because somehow this is related to safety and security of the women residing in Haldwani," Joshi further wrote in her post.

Prahlad Narayan Meena, SSP Nainital, took immediate cognizance of the viral video of the vehicle chasing girls in Haldwani city last night and an FIR has been registered. The youth riding in the vehicles have been caught by the police.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre to take necessary steps and consider bringing a law to regulate mobile app-based taxi service providers like <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/courtesy-matters-uber-to-remove-riders-who-misbehave-or-damage-properties-despite-warnings-193758">Ola and Uber </a>to ensure the safety of women.

A bench headed by Justice S A Bobde was hearing a petition filed by Nipun Saxena related to safety and security of women. Nipun had filed the petition after Nirbhaya gangrape case in 2012.

The bench also comprising Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice B R Gavai asked the petitioner to make a representation before the government containing suggestion on the regulation of the app-based taxi services.

The court also asked the state governments to set up 'Crisis Centre' in each district to deal with sexual offence cases against women. It also asked states to comply with the guidelines and standard operating procedures framed by the Central government on the running of a Crisis Centre. 
 
A Crisis Centre helps sexual assault victims by providing counselling and other services. 
 
There have been several instances in the recent past across the country wherein women were assaulted while travelling in Ola and Uber cabs.
