Chief Justice John Roberts on Friday temporarily allowed the White House to continue construction of President Donald Trump’s $400 million ballroom project while the Supreme Court considers the Trump administration’s emergency request to intervene in lawsuits challenging the project. The one-page temporary order came just hours before lower-court rulings were set to force a halt to aboveground construction. Roberts did not explain his reasoning or provide a timeline for when the full Supreme Court might issue a decision. Roberts signed the order because, as chief justice, he oversees appeals involving cases filed in Washington, DC. The legal battle reaches the Supreme Court as Trump, a Republican, continues to assert broad presidential authority and pursue major changes to federal property and the nation’s capital. The Trump administration has secured several victories through the Supreme Court’s emergency docket, although the justices have also rejected some of the president’s key policies after considering them through the court’s regular review process. The administration argues that the president has broad authority to renovate the White House and other federal buildings and maintains that the ballroom project is necessary because of national security concerns. However, when Trump initially announced plans for the ballroom, he did not highlight national security as a justification. Instead, he said the project would be financed through private donations, including contributions from Trump himself. Also Read: Trump warns of ‘economic D-Day’ against Iran, but Tehran knows sanctions well The National Trust for Historic Preservation contends that Trump does not have unilateral authority to carry out the project, which has already involved demolishing the East Wing. Attorneys representing the preservation group accused the White House of attempting to “outrun the courts” by speeding up construction. According to court documents filed by the Justice Department, the administration says approximately 65% of the planned 90,000-square-foot (8,400-square-meter) ballroom has been completed. Construction crews are reportedly working 20 hours a day, seven days a week, while about $200 million in private donations has been spent or committed. The legal dispute began after US District Judge Richard Leon ordered a halt to aboveground construction in April. That ruling was temporarily suspended before an appeals court panel later upheld the construction restrictions. Leon’s order allows belowground work involving bunkers and military installations to continue. He was nominated to the federal bench by President George W. Bush, a Republican. Two appeals-court judges appointed by Democratic presidents concluded that Congress should decide whether the project could proceed, describing it as “not a matter for Executive self-help.” A third judge, appointed by Trump, concluded that the preservation group challenging the project lacked legal standing to bring the lawsuit. Solicitor General D. John Sauer has challenged the ruling, calling the decision halting construction “extraordinary and unlawful.” He also argued that completing the ballroom was “vitally required by national security.” For now, Roberts’ temporary order allows construction to continue while the Supreme Court weighs the administration’s emergency request. The justices’ eventual decision could determine whether the White House can proceed with the project without additional congressional approval.

US Supreme Court allows Trump's $400 million White House Ballroom construction to continue for now

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (May 19) showcased the site of his new $400 million White House ballroom, a massive project that critics argue ignores voter frustration over the rising cost of living. The 79-year-old appeared in his element while guiding reporters through the construction zone. "This is a gift to the United States of America," Trump said, standing near yellow railings above a cavernous concrete basement. “This is all my money and donors' money. This is tax free.” While Trump insists the project is funded entirely by wealthy supporters and corporations despite its price tag doubling from an initial $200 million estimate, taxpayer funding remains a major point of contention. https://www.wionews.com/videos/iran-war-trump-puts-iran-strike-on-hold-after-gulf-nations-push-for-talks-1779204687032/embed Democrats are bitterly opposing a proposed $1 billion security allocation of public funds tied to the project, using the issue to attack Republicans ahead of November's crucial midterm elections. Trump emphasised the project's security features, explaining that the building features six underground storeys designed to house a hospital, research facilities, and military installations."The ballroom becomes a shield that will totally protect what's going on downstairs," Trump said, adding that drones would "bounce" off the roof and noting the location would serve as a good site for snipers. Also read: "Completely false': China rejects report claiming Xi told Trump Putin may regret invading Ukraine The developer's architectural tastes were also on display as he detailed how one facade of the ballroom is styled after ancient Greece, and another after Rome. They contend that the ballroom, along with other capital refurbishments, is deeply tone-deaf as the war in Iran drives up consumer costs. The midterms, which will determine control of the US Congress, are less than six months away.
