The conflict between Israel and Iran-aligned Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah is escalating with each passing day. More than 700 people in Lebanon were killed in Israeli strikes over the past week. On Saturday (Sep 28), a wave of airstrikes hit Beirut's southern suburbs as Israel stepped up attacks on Hezbollah. These strikes came a day after Israel knocked out six buildings in Beirut's southern suburb of Haret Hreik. The Israeli military said the strike, which killed and wounded dozens of people, hit the headquarters of Hezbollah in Beirut. On Saturday, the Israeli military said that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was eliminated during Friday's strikes. "Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world," the IDF said in a post on X. Hezbollah, on Saturday, confirmed that its leader Nasrallah was killed a day ago due to the Israeli strike. So, who was Hassan Nasrallah and how did he transform Hezbollah into one of the most powerful paramilitary groups in West Asia? Here's a look: A profile of Hassan Nasrallah Nasrallah, 64, was born in 1960 into a poor Shiite family in Beirut’s impoverished northern suburb of Sharshabouk. He studied theology and joined the Amal movement, a Shiite political and paramilitary organisation, before becoming one of Hezbollah’s founders. He built a power base as Hezbollah became part of a cluster of Iranian-backed factions and governments known as the Axis of Resistance. Two days after its leader Sayyed Abbas Musawi, was killed in an Israeli helicopter gunship raid in south Lebanon, Hezbollah chose Nasrallah as its secretary-general in February 1992. In 1997, the United States (US) designated Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation. How Hezbollah transformed under Nasrallah Under his leadership, the Lebanese militant group has fought wars against Israel and taken part in the conflict in Syria, helping tip the balance of power in favour of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Under Nasrallah, Hezbollah was credited with leading the war of attrition that led to the withdrawal of Israeli troops from south Lebanon in 2000. Following the Israeli withdrawal, Nasrallah rose to iconic status both within Lebanon and throughout the Arab world. Also watch | Race to Power: Is the Israel-Hezbollah conflict helping Netanyahu politically? × Nasrallah reshaped Hezbollah into an archenemy of Israel, cementing alliances with Shiite religious leaders in Iran and Palestinian militant groups such as Hamas, a report by the news agency Associated Press said. His role in current West Asia crisis A day after the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023, Hezbollah began attacking Israeli military posts along the border calling it a “backup front” for Gaza. In speeches throughout the conflict, the 64-year-old argued that Hezbollah’s cross-border strikes had pulled away Israeli forces that would otherwise be focused on the Palestinian militant group Hamas and insisted that Hezbollah would not halt its attacks on Israel until a ceasefire was reached in Gaza. Nasrallah maintained a defiant tone, even as tensions rose dramatically in recent weeks with Israel announcing a new phase in the conflict intended to push Hezbollah back from the border to allow thousands displaced from northern Israel to return, the Associated Press report said. Morning brief: Trump to meet Zelensky today; West Asia crisis updates, and more

The Israeli army chief has told his troops that the ongoing strikes in Lebanon may serve as a precursor to "possible entry" of soldiers into the “enemy territory.”

"You hear the jets overhead; we have been striking all day," General Herzi Halevi told troops.

"This is both to prepare the ground for your possible entry and to continue degrading Hezbollah," he is believed to have told the military.

The Israeli army chief said that the motive of this operation would be to “safely return the residents of the north," as thousands of Israelis have been evacuated from border areas.

"To achieve that, we are preparing the process of a manoeuvre, which means your military boots, your manoeuvring boots, will enter enemy territory, enter villages that Hezbollah has prepared as large military outposts, with underground infrastructure, staging points, and launchpads into our territory and carry out attacks on Israeli civilians," Halevi said.

"You will go in, destroy the enemy there, and decisively destroy their infrastructure.”

This comes after the Israeli military on Wednesday mobilised reserve brigades to the northern border with Lebanon for "operational missions" in the area.

India issues advisory

India on Wednesday asked its citizens to leave Lebanon immediately in view of the recent developments and escalations.

"As a reiteration of the Advisory issued on 1 August 2024 and in view of the recent developments and escalations in the region, Indian nationals are strongly advised against travelling to Lebanon till further notice," the Indian embassy in Beirut said in a statement.

"All Indian nationals already in Lebanon are also strongly advised to leave Lebanon. Those who remain for any reason are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements and remain in contact with Embassy of India in Beirut through our email ID: cons.beirut@mea.gov.in or the emergency phone number +96176860128," the statement added.

Biden warns of all-out war

The Israeli army chief has told his troops that the ongoing strikes in Lebanon may serve as a precursor to "possible entry" of soldiers into the “enemy territory.” "You hear the jets overhead; we have been striking all day," General Herzi Halevi told troops. "You will go in, destroy the enemy there, and decisively destroy their infrastructure.” This comes after the Israeli military on Wednesday mobilised reserve brigades to the northern border with Lebanon for "operational missions" in the area. India issues advisory India on Wednesday asked its citizens to leave Lebanon immediately in view of the recent developments and escalations. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday (Sept 23) that Israel wanted to drag the Middle East into a full-blown war by provoking Iran to join the nearly-old conflict between Israel and Tehran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. "We do not wish to be the cause of instability in the Middle East as its consequences would be irreversible," President Pezeshkian told the press after his arrival in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the news agency Reuters reported. "We want to live in peace, we don't want war. It is Israel that seeks to create this all-out conflict," Pezeshkian added. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced from towns and villages on both sides of the border by near-daily exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. Israel said it preferred a diplomatic solution that would have Hezbollah moved farther back from the border. However, Hezbollah, which also says it wants to avoid all-out conflict, said that only an end to the war in Gaza would stop the fighting. As per reports, Ibrahim Qubaisi, a top Hezbollah commander responsible for directing missile attacks towards central Israel, was killed in the attack. Ibrahim Qubaisi, also known as Abu Musa, was the head of the terror group's missile unit. He was killed Tuesday in one of the strikes on Beirut’s Dahieh district, when a six-storey residential building was hit by the IDF. The Israeli military said more than 50 projectiles were fired into northern Israel in less than 10 minutes on Tuesday morning, most of which were intercepted. These attacks by the Israeli military and Hezbollah came a day after Lebanon said that Israeli airstrikes killed nearly 500 people and sent tens of thousands fleeing for safety. Iran-aligned Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said on Saturday (Sept 21) that a second senior commander was among 15 of its fighters killed in an Israeli air strike on its Beirut stronghold the previous day. Hezbollah said Ahmed Mahmud Wahbi led the military operations of its elite Radwan Force in support of Hamas between October 7 when the Palestinian militant group attacked Israel, triggering the Gaza war at the start of this year. The Israeli military said that its air strike on Beirut's southern suburbs on Friday eliminated Radwan Force chief Ibrahim Aqil and several other commanders. Who was the first Hezbollah commander killed in Israeli strike? On Friday, the Israeli military said citing sources that Aqil had been killed with other senior members of an elite Hezbollah unit in the airstrike. The Lebanese militant group confirmed Aqil's death in a statement just after midnight that called him "one of its top leaders," without providing details of how he died. Palestinian militant group Hamas on Sunday (Sept 15) praised Yemen's Houthi rebels for their missile attack in central Israel earlier in the day. In a statement, Hamas said that Israel would not enjoy security unless it ended its offensive in the Gaza Strip. Hamas considers the missile attack a "natural response to the Zionist entity's aggression against our Palestinian people ... We affirm that the Zionist enemy will not enjoy security unless it ceases its brutal aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip," the group said in a statement. Hamas' remarks came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a warning to the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels after they launched the missile attack. "This morning, the Houthis launched a surface-to-surface missile from Yemen into our territory. They should have known by now that we charge a 'heavy price' for any attempt to harm us," Prime Minister Netanyahu said at the start of a cabinet meeting, according to a statement from his office. Israel's military said the missile fell in an open area and nobody was hurt. A report by the news agency Reuters said that air raid sirens had sounded in Tel Aviv and across central Israel moments before the missile landed at around 6.35 am local time, sending residents running for shelter. Loud booms were heard, which the military said came from missile interceptors. "Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in central Israel, a surface-to-surface missile was identified crossing into central Israel from the east and fell in an open area. No injuries were reported," the Israeli military said. Previous attacks on Israel The Houthis have fired missiles at Israel repeatedly in what they say is solidarity with the Palestinians since the Gaza war began with a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Shia Islamist militant group Hezbollah, claimed in a speech on Sunday (August 25) that Israel's preemptive attacks in Lebanon had no impact on the retaliatory operations of Hezbollah.

"We delayed our operation amid a buildup of Israeli and US forces in the region, we could not afford failure, we also discussed retaliating together as a Resistance or separately, we also wanted to give enough time for ceasefire negotiations," he said in his televised speech.

"But since Netanyahu is having new demands for the ceasefire and negotiations are going nowhere, we decided to proceed," he added.

Nasrallah accused the United States of being complicit in Israel's actions. "The US is capable of pressuring Netanyahu to accept a ceasefire, but they won't, they are complicit in everything Israel does," he said.

Nasrullah claimed that all Hezbollah drones successfully entered Israeli airspace and added that the group had no intention of using precision missiles in Sunday's attack, but may deploy them in the near future.

He added that the Israeli military began strikes on Lebanon about 30 minutes before Hezbollah’s operation, but the targeted areas had nothing to do with the operation.

He added that Hezbollah's goals did not involve targeting civilians, despite Israel's attacks on civilians in Lebanon. "From the start, we had goals: no civilian targets, despite the fact that Israel is targeting civilians in Lebanon. We want to protect civilians in Lebanon, and this is why we did not target civilians in Israel. We decided that our targets will be military and have to do with the assassination of Sayyed Fouad Shukr, military intelligence, and the air force," Nasrallah stated.

He also mentioned that their primary target was the Gelilot base, which hosts the Israeli Military Intelligence Directorate’s Unit 8200 and is located near Tel Aviv.

Nasrallah dismissed any claims that Hezbollah intended to hit civilian targets, stating, "Any narrative that we were going to hit civilian targets and that they preempted this is a lie. If any civilian was killed in this operation, it must have been from the enemy's interceptors."

He also rejected Israel's assertion that they targeted 6,000 rockets and drones, asserting, "Israel failed to hit any of Hezbollah's strategic or ballistic missiles."

Our launchers were north of the Litani river, south of it, and also in the Beqaa. Israel's preemptive strike had no impact on Hezbollah's retaliatory operations," he said.

The Israeli military claimed that Hezbollah was planning to launch rockets and missiles toward Israel. According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), around 100 fighter jets "struck and destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels" at over 40 sites.

Earlier, IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, "A short while ago, the IDF identified the Hezbollah terrorist organization preparing to fire missiles and rockets toward Israeli territory. In a self-defense act to remove these threats, the IDF is striking terror targets in Lebanon."

The airline extended its suspension of flights to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport until next April. According to a report by Israeli broadcaster KAN, the airline did not provide any specific details about the suspension. 20 airlines have suspended Israel flights so far Since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023, several major international carriers have suspended their flights to Israel. Some of these major airlines include United Airlines, Lufthansa, Air France, and Cathay Pacific. KAN earlier reported that as of August 7, the total number of foreign airlines that have suspended flights to and from Israel reached 20. Gaza ceasefire talks The development of American Airlines cancelling its flights to and from Israel came as talks would again start to end the Israel-Hamas war. The fresh round of ceasefire talks began in Qatar last week but paused without a breakthrough. The talks will resume this week based on a US "bridging proposal." Hamas has cast doubt on the chances of reaching a deal. "This is a decisive moment, probably the best, maybe the last opportunity to get the hostages home, to get a ceasefire and to put everyone on a better path to enduring peace and security," Blinken told reporters on Monday. Lebanon's Economy Minister Amin Salam said on Thursday (Aug 8) that the country's economy was in a very dangerous spot as the government prepared for war, a siege, and billions of dollars of destruction and losses. Speaking to The National, Economy Minister Salam said that a full-scale war in Lebanon would destroy "what is left of this nation.” Tensions in West Asia escalated following the killings of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh and senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr. Salam told the publication that ministers were preparing an emergency plan that would cost the country tens of millions of dollars to keep crucial sectors running in case of escalation. Lebanon has been heavily reliant on diesel generators since the economic crisis in 2019 dealt the final blow to the electricity sector. Salam told The National if the flow of diesel was disrupted, “Supermarkets will not be able to run refrigerators, hospitals will not be able to function properly, and telecoms will be impacted … this would be a disaster.” The economy minister added that faced with this emergency, fuel providers have promised fast shipments to Lebanon within the month or the next few weeks. He also appealed for help from the international community if the situation escalated, as Lebanon's already dwindling foreign reserves would barely be sufficient to keep crucial sectors running. Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi group claimed on Wednesday (Jun 26) to have used a domestically developed hypersonic missile in an attack on a cargo ship in the Arabian Sea earlier this week, Xinhua reported. This development came amid escalating tensions in West Asia and attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways.

The rebel group released a video statement purporting to show the launch of the missile, which is dubbed "Hadim 2". Houthi claimed in the video that the statement described the Hadim 2 as a solid-fuel hypersonic ballistic missile manufactured by Houthi military facilities. It also added that this marked the first public revelation of the missile.
