A former Polish security official arrested by Polish authorities has been charged with spying for China while still working for Polish government institutions, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

Piotr Durbajlo, who was working for Orange Polska at the time of his arrest on January 10, had previously worked for Poland's Internal Security Agency and the Office of Electronic Communications, among other state institutions between 2000 and 2017, according to a LinkedIn profile in his name.

Spokespeople from Poland's national prosecutor's office and security services declined to comment on the Journal's report when contacted by Reuters. Reuters was not able immediately to determine the identity of Durbajlo's lawyers.

On January 11, officials said Durbajlo was arrested along with Chinese national Weijing Wang, an executive of telecommunications equipment maker Huawei, on allegations of spying, in a move that fuels Western security concerns about the Chinese company. The officials did not disclose details of the alleged espionage.

Both men heard charges in a Polish court last week.

Poland's government could consider limiting the use of Huawei products by public bodies in the wake of the arrests, a government official told Reuters on Sunday.

Huawei, the world's biggest producer of telecommunications equipment, faces intense scrutiny in the West over its relationship with China's government and US-led allegations that its devices could be used by Beijing for spying.

Polish man arrested over spying for China while working in government: Report

In the hours leading up to journalist Jamal Khashoggi's brutal killing, Saudi Arabia's crown prince sent at least 11 messages to his closest advisor who was charged with overseeing the murder, the Wall Street Journal said quoting a CIA assessment.

Mohammad bin Salman also told associates in August last year that if he failed to persuade Khashoggi to return to Saudi Arabia, "we could possibly lure him outside Saudi Arabia and make arrangements" — a communication the Central Intelligence Agency said "seems to foreshadow the Saudi operation launched against Khashoggi."

The Journal said it had reviewed excerpts of the highly classified intelligence document, which relied on electronic intercepts and other clandestine information.

Khashoggi, a trenchant critic of the crown prince who relocated to Virginia and wrote op-eds for the Washington Post, was killed by Saudi operatives inside the kingdom's Istanbul consulate on October 2, triggering global condemnation.

After initially denying the murder, Saudi Arabia acknowledged some liability but blamed his death on a "rogue" operation.

The Journal reported in November that the CIA had concluded Prince Mohammed had likely personally ordered the killing.

President Donald Trump, who has been accused of covering for the Saudi leadership, appeared to challenge that assessment about the prince, saying "maybe he did, maybe he didn't".

The newspaper said that excerpts of the assessment it had not previously reported state that the CIA has "medium-to-high confidence" that Prince Mohammed "personally targeted" Khashoggi and "probably ordered his death" -- but added: "To be clear, we lack direct reporting of the Crown Prince issuing a kill order".

The electronic messages were said to have been sent by Prince Mohammad to Saud al-Qahtani, who supervised the 15-man team that killed Khashoggi, the paper said.

The contents of the messages weren't known, it added, citing the assessment, which also did not reveal the format of electronic communication.

Wall Street rose on Friday as investors hoped for progress on trade in a critical US-China meeting over the weekend, and the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq posted their biggest weekly percentage gains in nearly seven years.

The Dow saw its largest weekly advance in two years. Investors were encouraged this week by comments by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and subsequent minutes from the central bank's latest meeting that suggested that the Fed will take a data-driven rather than ideological approach to future rate hikes.

All three major US indexes recorded modest monthly percentage gains for November.

A Chinese official said "consensus is steadily increasing" in trade negotiations between the US and China as the G20 meeting got underway in Buenos Aires, sparking hopes there would be a positive resolution in the ongoing tariff dispute between the world's two largest economies.

US President Donald Trump is set to meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Saturday and the outcome could swing stocks for the rest of the year.

"The three key issues that people are really focusing on are how dovish is the Fed going to be going forward, how are trade relations with China going to play out, and what's going on in the oil markets," said Charlie Ripley, senior market strategist for Allianz Investment Management in Minneapolis.

"But as we get better news, that's helped lift the markets," Ripley added. "That's why we're seeing a week like this week."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average.DJI rose 199.62 points, or 0.79 per cent, to 25,538.46, the S&P 500 SPX gained 22.4 points, or 0.82 per cent, to 2,760.16 and the Nasdaq Composite IXIC added 57.45 points, or 0.79 per cent, to 7,330.54.

Of the 11 major sectors in the S&P 500, all but energy SPNY ended the session in positive territory.

Energy stocks fell 0.2 per cent as crude prices LCOc1 extended their slide.

But falling oil prices boosted airlines stocks. The Dow Jones Airlines index DJUSAR rose 2.8 per cent.

Shares of Marriott International Inc MAR.O sank 5.6 per cent after the hotel operator said hackers stole about 500 million records from its Starwood Hotels reservation system.

General Electric Co GEN shares slid 5.5 per cent following a Wall Street Journal report that former employees are being questioned by federal investigators about the company's failure to acknowledge its insurance business' worsening results over the years.

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.17-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.24-to-1 ratio favoured advancers.

The S&P 500 posted 28 new 52-week highs and 6 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 49 new highs and 90 new lows.

Volume on US exchanges was 8.39 billion shares, compared to the 7.63 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

Trump was asked whether he thought Salman was at least aware of the plan to kill Khashoggi.

“Well, the prince is running things over there more so at this stage,” the Wall Street Journal quoted Trump as saying. “He’s running things and so if anybody were going to be, it would be him.”

Trump had earlier said "the cover up (of the killing) was one of the worst in the history of cover ups." He went on to call the killing and its aftermath — with the Saudis first denying the murder, then giving a number of accounts as to how it might have happened — a "total fiasco."

US President Donald Trump on Sunday disputed a newspaper's account of an interview with him last week in which he was quoted as saying he probably has a very good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump said in tweets that in the Wall Street Journal interview on Thursday, he said "I'd probably" have a good relationship with Kim, using a conditional tense.

The White House released a portion of the audio from the interview that it said showed Trump said "I'd." The Wall Street Journal released its own audio that it said backed up its version of the events.

The Trump comment was key because it suggested he feels he has a good relationship with Kim, who has resisted global pressure to stand down from a series of nuclear and ballistic missile tests.

Trump has derided the North Korean leader as a “maniac” and referred to him as “little rocket man.” Kim has responded by calling the U.S. president a “mentally deranged U.S. dotard.”

Kim has warned the United States that he intends to build a nuclear arsenal capable of hitting the United States, prompting threats of military action by Washington.

In the Wall Street Journal interview, Trump was asked whether he has spoken with the North Korean leader.

“I don’t want to comment on it. I‘m not saying I have or haven‘t. I just don’t want to comment," he had said.

Trump is spending a long weekend at his oceanfront Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida.

"Obviously I didn’t say that," tweeted Trump. "I said 'I’d have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un,' a big difference. Fortunately we now record conversations with reporters ... and they knew exactly what I said and meant. They just wanted a story. FAKE NEWS!"

A White House official said the delay in publicly disputing the Journal's account was the result of a failed attempt to get the paper to correct the record.

"The reason there was a delay is because we had several calls and emails with WSJ, starting Friday morning, asking them to issue a correction. They refused and so we pushed out our own clarification," the official said.

Trump denies saying he probably had good relationship with Kim

US President Donald Trump has said that he feels "betrayed" by his former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon who was highly critical of him and his family in a book published last week.

Bannon who worked with him first as his campaign manager and then as his chief strategist at the White House was fired by him last August.

In a book 'Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House' published last week, Bannon is extensively quoted as being highly critical of him and his family, even going to the extent of claiming that the president was not interested in winning the presidential election and that first lady Melania wept after the election result because she did not want Trump to win.

"I feel betrayed because you are not supposed to do that, but I have many people that work for me who were far more important than Steve, right there," Trump was quoted as saying by The Wall Street Journal.

"I always liked Steve, but Steve became very ineffective because he was such a lightning rod. And Steve, in the end I fired Steve," Trump said.

Soon after the excerpts of the book was released, Trump in a statement said that Bannon has nothing to do with his presidency and that he has lost his mind.

"Is that relationship permanently broken between you and Steve?" he was asked.

"You never know, I don't know what the word permanent means. We will see what happens, but Steve had nothing to do with my win. Well, certainly very little," he asserted.

"Steve's greatest asset is he was able to convince a corrupt media that he was responsible for my win. Hope, just out of curiosity, you were there from day one. What do you think Steve in a percentage had to do with my victory? I mean he was there. Corey [Lewandowski] had more to do with it," Trump said.

Asserting that the liberal media dislikes him, Trump said he is smart.

"I was successful, successful, successful. I was always the best athlete, people don?t know that. But I was successful at everything I ever did and then I run for president, first time?first time, not three times, not six times. I ran for president first time and lo and behold, I win. And then people say oh, is he a smart person? I am smarter than all of them put together, but they can't admit it. They had a bad year," Trump said.

"When I won against the 17 people, you can?t then say that oh, gee, somebody comes in two months after I won, and he gives me new policy, new idea. I can?t change those ideas, those ideas are wedded," he said.

Trump said that Bannon's remarks against his son were horrible.

"My son had a brief meeting based on the fact that he thought whatever he thought. And somebody said bad stuff on an opponent. I don't know of one politician in Washington; if you're a politician and somebody called up that they have information on your opponent that might be negative," he said.

Donald Trump says he feels betrayed by Bannon

US President-elect Donald Trump said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that he would keep intact sanctions against Russia "at least for a period of time," but added he would be open to lifting sanctions if Moscow proves helpful in battling terrorists and reaching other goals important to Washington.

Trump also said he wouldn't commit to the "One-China" policy until he sees progress from Beijing in its currency and trade practices.

In excerpts published by the Wall Stree Journal, Trump said, "If you get along and if Russia is really helping us, why would anybody have sanctions if somebody’s doing some really great things?"

Trump told the newspaper he is prepared to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin some time after he is sworn in on January 20.

"I understand that they would like to meet, and that’s absolutely fine with me," he said. Asked if he supported the "One-China" policy on Taiwan that has underpinned US relations with Beijing for decades, Trump told the Journal: "Everything is under negotiation including One-China."

Trump angered the Chinese by taking a congratulatory phone call after his election win from Taiwan's leader and questioning the "One-China" policy. The United States has acknowledged the Chinese position that there is only One-China and that Taiwan is part of China.

Trump has said in the past he would label China a currency manipulator after he takes office. In the interview, he said he wouldn’t take that step on his first day in the White House. “I would talk to them first," he said. "Certainly they are manipulators," he added. "But I’m not looking to do that."

But he made plain his displeasure with China’s currency practices. "Instead of saying, 'We’re devaluating our currency,' they say, 'Oh, our currency is dropping.' It’s not dropping. They’re doing it on purpose," he said, according to the Journal.

"Our companies can’t compete with them now because our currency is strong and it’s killing us," the Journal quoted Trump as saying.
