Delhi AIIMS ransomware attack: China involvement suspected, data of VVIPs, celebrities at risk

<p>Businessman Ratul Puri, who is an accused in AgustaWestland money laundering case, on Thursday, approached a Delhi court seeking to surrender before it. Puri has moved an application stating that he wants to surrender before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court.</p>

<p>He is already in custody of Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Moser Baer bank fraud case.</p>

<p>Yesterday, a Delhi Court dismissed the petition moved by Puri seeking cancellation of a non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued against him in a money laundering case connected to Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam.</p>

<p>On August 9, Special Judge Arvind Kumar had allowed a plea of the ED, seeking issuance of an NBW against Puri.</p>

<p>The agency had accused him of not joining the probe despite several summonses.</p>

<p>Puri, a nephew of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, had on August 16 filed the plea for cancellation of the NBW by contending that he is willing to join the probe.</p>

<p>The case pertains to alleged irregularities in the purchase of 12 VVIP choppers from Italy-based Finmeccanica's British subsidiary AgustaWestland.</p>

<p>The deal was scrapped by the NDA government in 2014 over the alleged breach of contractual obligations and charges of payment of kickbacks.&nbsp;<br />

<p>According to sources a two-member Enforcement Directorate team headed by an Inspector General rank officer and officials of Ministry of External Affairs and Research and Analysis Wing (R&amp;AW) had accompanied both the accused to Delhi from Dubai in the aircraft which landed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi around 2.30 am.</p>

<p>Soon after the aircraft landed, Talwar was taken into Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody, sources said.</p>

<p>Dubai has approved India’s request to extradite Christen Michel, who is wanted in connection with the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestand VVIP chopper deal case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Michel, a British businessman, is wanted for commercial fraud, bribery and money laundering as part of investigations into the multi-million dollar helicopter purchase deal.</p>

<p>According to WION sources, the Dubai Cassation Court upheld the appellate court’s decision to extradite 54-year-old Michel to the Indian authorities despite having pleaded not guilty.</p>

<p>“The extradition request was lodged by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and it should have been lodged by the Indian Home Ministry,” Michel’s lawyer Abdul Moneim Bin Suwaidan argued before the Dubai Cassation Court.</p>

<p>“As per the Criminal Extradition Accord signed between the UAE and India, the Indian Home Ministry is the authority that should have lodged the request,” the lawyer contended as his client was challenging the extradition decision.</p>

<p>Presiding judge Abdul Aziz Abdullah, on Monday, dismissed Michel’s appeal, upholding the Appeal Court’s to approve the extradition.</p>

<p>India had requested Michel's extradition before the Dubai Public Prosecution last year in February.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The AgustaWestland deal was signed in 2007 for the purchase of 12 luxury helicopters that would be used to ferry top leaders including the president, the prime minister, and former prime ministers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2014, the government scrapped the contract amid allegations that AgustaWestland, which was supplying the luxury helicopters, had paid kickbacks in India.&nbsp;</p>
